Never paid tolls. Should I start? Whenever I use Google maps to plot a route and it chooses a tollway, I look at the time taken and it's usually a saving of no more than a few minutes compared to taking the longer route.

    Am I missing something?

    • +4

you are missing the satisfying bleep when you drive through the e-toll

    • +2

During off-peak, tolls only save you a small amount of time, but during peak hour, you'd be an idiot not to use tolls, you're just asking for multiple headaches if you go the way without tolls.

  • +3

ive been looking to get a e-tag for a while. this seems good. thanks OP.

  • Just signed up. I've been using my parents tag every time I needed it and it was getting to be a pain in the arse. Can't see any downsides to this for the casual toll user.

    This is great +1 op

  • +1

The only advantage to this I can see over Queensland's GoVia is that you can use this to claim rebates from NSW motorways.

If you don't need to claim any rebates, GoVia will still be cheaper:
    http://www.govia.com.au

Unless they've changed something in the last six months, GoVia also allow $10 top-ups if your balance drops below $5. None of the 'if you use it more than 9 times in 3 months you have to pay a deposit' etc etc rules, no credit card transaction fees. GoVia also allow unlimited numbers of vehicles per account.

    • -2

You can only claim the rebates if you are a NSW resident anyway so you might as well get a RTA etoll tag instead of this e-way tag so that benefit is not their either.

      • +1

I live in NSW but still use the Queensland GoVia tag, as it works anywhere in Australia. I don't use the M5, so don't require rebates. If I required the rebate, this E-Way tag is a great deal.

Why would I want to get an RTA etoll tag when it'll cost me $80 just to open the account, and I effectively lose $40 which they keep as a security deposit? This deal is for a $25 tag, with no security deposit.

        • Just to make it clear. If you don't need the rebate, then keep your GoVia.

  • +3

Or you can get an RTA etoll tag (NSW) which has no risk of being closed due to inactivity or upgraded to full account. It also can have 3 tags per vehicle and has no credit card top up fee.
    http://www.myrta.com/wps/portal/extvp/myrta/etoll/product-ta…

    • Exactly what I was going to say. The RTA tag is by far the cheapest and gives you exactly the same functionality.

I remember shopping around years ago and was shocked that the differences between providers is so great…

      • From the RTA website's Terms & Conditions:
        $40 security deposit1 for 1st tag
$40 minimum opening credit for Infrequent E-Toll Tag accounts.

RTA require a $40 security deposit PLUS $40 minimum deposit - in what world is $80 cheaper than NO deposit and $25 to open the account?

        • +2

If you want to compare properly, I still believe RTA is the cheapest and most convenient by far if you are in NSW

Bad tag/low battery, go to the RTA nearest to you for a swap. Same with brackets. No postage costs.
2nd/3rd tag is now free, and no additional deposit required.
$40 deposit is a deposit! What's the big deal? People pay TPG deposits that they'll never get back. At least the RTA will return it when you give back the tag.
$40 minimum deposit vs $25: E-way makes the difference back in no time with their fees, 0.5% credit card surcharge, higher for Am Exp.

        • People pay TPG deposits because often the deposit is cheaper than the monthly cost of a Telstra or Optus service. I don't pay the RTA a $40 tag deposit because I can use another company who don't charge anything.

E-Way don't charge fees for direct deposit.

If I didn't use GoVia already, this E-Way deal would be pretty good. One of my cars used less than $15 worth of tolls in 5 years, so if I had this E-Way tag 5 years ago, my total cost would be $25 (with $10 credit left, as I never would have hit the recharge minimum.) If I'd used the RTA tag, I'd still be out of pocket $80. That $55 difference over 5 years at 5% compound interest - that's $35 worth of interest in MY pocket, not the RTA! $55+$35=$90. At 6% interest in an ING account (which I didn't have at the time, so just using as an example) it's $100.

So after 5 years, I have $90 in my pocket. So, what's a $40 deposit? Whoopdy-do!! If you think $90 is nothing, you shouldn't be wasting your time on OzBargain.

        • Was there any time period where you didn't use any toll at all for 12 months?
For me the convenience of not having the account cancelled on you because it was more than 12 months since you last used it counts for something.

If not paying a deposit is the overriding factor for you, you probably should be pay the toll in cash only when you take the trip. More cash in the pocket that way. :)

        • Unfortunately there are no cash lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Tunnel or Eastern Distributor any more. If you drive through without a tag they charge something like $5 administration fee. If there were cash lanes, I wouldn't bother with a tag at all.

There are plenty of other non-safety-deposit firms to choose from that don't expire after 12 months. There's no reason to pay the $40 deposit to the RTA.

        • take it down a notch mate, don't take it so personally. Everyone's requirement is different and value different things.

  • @OP, good work on following up on T&Gs ;)

Can you please clarify "Can have up to two tags/vehicles on the account".
So couples/families with two cars can have one tag supplied for each car on the one account that will have $25 in it initially?

    • Yes. Signed up yesterday. One account. Two cars (maximum). Two tags. $25.00.

      • Deal only seems available via phone. Not online.

      • The rep checked with her supervisor about whether or not my trailer should be registered as a third vehicle. I was told it was not necessary.

  • +1

Yeah what's wrong with the RTA etoll tag NSW? That's what I've been using here in VIC.

    • It used to be $40 deposit per tag, with a minimum $20 recharge per tag. So if you have three tags, you'd have to have a minimum $120 safety deposit, and if one tag's balance dropped below $25 they recharge you $60 for all three tags. Absolute rip-off. I think they now only charge you a single $40 tag deposit fee for three tags, but still charge $20 per tag top-up. I don't know the exact terms now, but anything with a security deposit where they keep it forever (until you close the account) is a no-no for me. They don't deserve to have all that money sitting in their account earning interest.

  • I'm currently looking for one,I'm NSW resident.so which one is better for me?Any advise

    • +1

      Yes, try a c

  • This tag has no monthly fee, unlike the RTA one (assuming commenters are referring to the Easy Toll Tag). I'd prefer not to pay a monthy fee for a tag that I only use a few days a year.

    • RTA etoll has no monthly fee.
Your get charged $2.20 per month if you elect to have a paper statement but free if you use online only.

      • +1

And "total upfront cost" of $80.

  • Im in vic, rarely use tolls, except maybe airport. what options for me?

    • +2

This account covers ALL roads in Australia, so Vic users are covered.

Don't know what other options are available for us in Vic., but would also welcome input from anyone else.

    • +2

Queensland GoVia tags work anywhere in Australia also:
      http://www.govia.com.au

No security deposit, no credit card fees, very low minimum balance, low top-up amounts allowed. Can't claim rebates for NSW tollways, not sure if it allows Vic roads rebates. Account doesn't expire due to inactivity. Unlimited number of vehicles per account.

You can also talk to a person on the phone, not a switchboard.

I've been using them with six cars on one account for the last seven years or so. Some cars have never used a tollway, some use it once or twice a year. Some weekly. All tolls comes out of the same balance.

    • +1

As said below I suggest an eastlink breeze account. $40 upfront that turns into travel credit and no credit expiry or yearly minimums for non commercial vehicles.

Also every Australian's tolling company's tag works on every tollway in Australia according to Wikipedia.

Whoa whoa whoa. Has anyone actually bothered to check the RTA E-Toll website before making these claims of no fees etc etc? Really depends on how often you're using it.

    E-Toll
    No registration fee
    No account fees
    $40 security deposit1 for 1st tag, waived for 2nd and 3rd tag
    $40 minimum opening credit

Has a $40 security deposit. Unless you really want that third tag, there's no way this ends up being cheaper for the casual user which is the whole point of this deal

    Easy Toll
    $1.50 online registration fee1
    $1.25 / month account fee2
    No security deposit for tag
    $10/$30 minimum opening credit3

This is their casual option. No security deposit this time but there's a $1.50 fee to register (no fee on this deal) and a $1.25 per month account fee. Now the "account fee" in this deal is their 0.5% credit card transaction fee which amounts to 13c. The only reason you should go for this option over the E-Way deal is if you're going to be topping up more than 9 times over 3 months which upgrades you to a regular account but if you're only using tolls maybe once or twice a week, you should never have to worry about it.

Lets go through what this deal offers.
    No tag deposit
    No registration fee
No monthly fee ($2.50 paper bill fee/quarter but they can just email you your bills)
    Maximum 2 tags
    $25 account credit
0.5% credit card fee (I believe this is only on credit cards but you can direct debit too which completely waives this)

    You decide.

  • Can I just get it now, and change the number plates registered with the account for free, or is it considered closing one account (registered with vehicle #1) and opening a new account (registered with vehicle #2)

Am asking this because if it's changeable, then it can be given as a gift to friends etc, or for that 3rd car I've always thought of getting but haven't yet

  • +2

I find my breeze tags work pretty well. I think it's 5 free tags per account. No minimum usage or expiry. No annual fees and cheaper than citylink e-tags!

    • +1

      Another + for breeze etags
No tag 'deposits' and no fees

  • Guys if you are Victorian and customer service matters to you go with Eastlink,
    Citylink SUCKS.

  • +1

As far as I can tell, every toll 'tag' in Australia works with every toll way in Australia with no extra cost or fees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-TAG "Australia was one of the first countries in the world to have complete, surcharge-free interoperability between rival tolling providers across different roadway jurisdictions (states)."

Don't know about being able to get one from interstate though. In Vic I compared etag (city link) and east link. etag I think requires a minimum usage of $27.5 per year in the first 3 years (I assume they charge that much if you don't spend that much). East link have a $40 upfront fee which turns into toll credit, and no other fees as far as I could tell with no expiration date on the pre paid amount. http://www.eastlink.com.au/downloadFile.aspx?file_id=337 (the second page specifically, note the side that says minimum account is business accounts/commercial vehicles).

They also give discounts for traveling on east link on the weekends and also have other offers on the website for example 30 mins of arcade games free with $25 card at Galactic circus (arcade in Crown), discounted defensive driving courses and other stuff. http://www.eastlink.com.au/news.aspx Didn't notice anything like that with city link.

I don't know if city link offers any concessions for traveling on their tollway but I don't really plan on traveling on it, it was more to have a tag and an account just in case I accidentally wonder onto the tollway so I don't have to call up and buy a day pass for $15 to travel through one gate so just depositing $40 to have a tag to sit in my car was ideal for me thus went with east link.

Their customer services seems good too. The brochure stated you can do automatic top ups or manual top ups, but while signing up there wasn't an option for it. Put in an email question form on it over night, they rung me early the following morning to talk to me about it and set what I wanted up.

Also their tag isn't ugly like city link's.
