long time ozbargainer, first time poster ;)

This is really a bit of a tricky process, but essentially what we're doing is combining the ability to buy AMEX points for redemption, with the Malaysia Enrich program which is having a sale (http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/content/dam/mas/master/en/pd…). Although they say the sale is ending in July, I've bought two sets of flights at this "price" over the last 6 months, so it's anybody's guess when it will actually end. The value comes from the fact that Malaysia Airlines equates 1 AMEX point to 1 Enrich Mile, so you're looking at about AUD $4000 when it's all said and done.

Steps:

Step 0: Find a business class Malaysia Airlines flight that you like and take note of the tax and surcharges.

  1. Sign up for Enrich if you don't already have an account.
  2. Login, go into flight redemption and have a browse. You'll notice that for many trips to Europe, it's only 51,000 points each way most of the time (even if you're booking at the last minute). If you're satisfied with the amount of tax + surcharges you have to pay (you can't get out of paying tax! You know the old saying..), then proceed to 3.
  3. Call the number on the back of your AMEX card to purchase the required number of points (it's $25 for 1000) - they may require the points to be used for some purpose rather than just putting them in your account - in this case, you're going to transfer them to your Malaysia Enrich Account. NOTE: It is necessary that your Enrich account is in the same name as your AMEX. So it should cost you $2550 for all the necessary points plus
  4. As I've said earlier, you'll also have to pay whatever that tax and surcharges figure above was.
  5. When your points come through, you simply go into flight redemption in the Enrich website, and redeem the points for flights, + pay by debit/credit card for the additional tax/surcharge amount.
  6. Travel in style.

I did a quick example:
STANDARD PURCHASE — SYD->LHR DEPART 15/08, RETURN 17/09 = ~$7700
AMEX METHOD — $2550 + Surcharges: $751.80 + Taxes: $502.87 = $3804.67

Big Saving!

Just beware:
* All of this is subject to change, whenever, as you know. I can't guarantee this will continue to work.
* It's entirely possible Malaysia Airlines will stop doing their promo in the time it takes for you to buy points and transfer them to Enrich - that's an unavoidable risk.
* Seats on the particular date you're looking at might sell out in that time
* The only part I haven't personally tried is purchasing points from AMEX… but I have spoken to an AMEX rep previously about this, and had it confirmed as possible.
* No refunds/flight changes/stopovers at all (as far as I can tell).

I have no reason to suspect why AMS would be any different, but I haven't personally booked to AMS, so I left it out. I have it feeling it might be run by codeshare with KLM. Other than that, I'd definitely recommend LHR and CDG anyway, since Malaysia runs A380s along these routes now, meaning fully flat beds. In my experience you will always end up on an A330 of some kind for the AUS->KUL leg, and these tend not to have the fully flat beds, but hey, for this price I'm not complaining :).

  • Please put ex SYD. In title.

    • I did an example for SYD->LHR in the deal. Worked fine for me. Try other dates?

      • +1

By ex SYD, Yakuza meant flight originating from Sydney, not excluding Sydney - it's travelspeak.

        • +5

Forgive my ignorance in flightspeak. If it put ex SYD, wouldn't that imply that MEL and BNE aren't options?

        • Agreed - it's this 'deal' applies to ex anywhere in Australia, really (obviously the price will be different, but the savings are still there).

        • Yes it would imply that, but I wasn't saying he was right, I was just telling you what he meant. Your response asking him to try other dates for SYD suggested to me you thought he meant 'excluding'.

        • was only going by your example as i thought you meant it was only available from Sydney.

          nevermind :)

    • +4

The 'deal' is available from anywhere - price will change but the basis of the deal is that it uses points, so it's not just ex-SYD

Did you even bother to read the post or did you just rush to get the first comment?

    • +3

Hijacking top comment to address the obvious omission:

      CDG = Paris Airport
      LHR = London Heathrow Airport

      • +1

        AMS = Amsterdam
        KUL = Kuala Lumpur
        :)

Plus 1 for the effort :)

Plus 1 for plus 1-ing the plus 1 for effort.

  • Might be better off posting that onto AFF or similar sites. Good deal nonetheless if you're heading to those destinations.

$25 to buy 1000 MR points ? No thanks.
Also, please note you won't be able to get frequent flyer points for the redemption points.

    • And when do you get FF points upon redemption?

      • From everyday purchase on credit cards :)

      • Qantas has "any seat reward" flights which earn you FF points and status credits upon redemption.

    • From memory approx 7000 MR points get you a $50 retail gift card.

    • Like I said in the text, my conversations with AMEX reps and my readings on the web suggest you can purchase points for transfer to FF partners now. If that's not the case, then obviously this whole deal is le dead.

  • Can this be used for non-business class flights too?

    • Yes, but the point purchase rate isn't as good value. It tends to be about 32500 points one way, so you're looking at $1625 + tax and surcharge (roughly speaking)

  • +1

You can redeem Etihad Guest points on Malaysian Airlines. Until 30 June there is a 15% bonus for amex MR points being transferred to Etihad Guest.
    Would this be better way?

  • +2

    the weak spots are:
Normally you can "top-up only" your miles account, not fill it up from scratch with miles purchases
Bookig a flight on point is like …. finding a needle in a hay ball ?
Spending +2500$ with these risks, no thanks.
    Nevertheless, great effort in researching

    Still $4000 too much :P

So basically ure selling points!! Just order a credit card find credit card machine. Done. New business???

Wouldn't ozbargainers prefer to travel by economy class to save money.
After all, you don't live on a plane.

And I doubt business class travellers would check ozbargain.

Hopefully one day you will pay off your loan, foreveraloan. Or perhaps you need to stop taking business class flights everywhere and start saving a little. Ozbargain.com.au is a good start tho..

    • If you have an investment property or business, you will foreveraloan too

"long time ozbargainer, first time poster ;)"
And congrats on a great first post!

That's an awesome deal & MAS is a great long haul airline.
Now if only the missus & boss would let me pop over to pommyland for The Ashes :-)

Additionally, you can donate $150 to MS Australia and receive 5,000 bonus points. You will also get a tax deduction.

  • I thought these were to Malaysia and was very angry that this got front page. But to London/Paris, I think $4000 (tax deducted) is highly acceptable.

  • +10

I like how easily you get angry

it's passion for a good bargain

  • So how many OzBargainers would hold an AMEX? Anyone? Don't those things have high annual fees?

There's also a mega forum thread at the moment asking why do people fly business or first class, and I think only one response is from someone who has.

    • +1

Amex cards do not always come with large fees. They offer the best and most flexible rewards program which allows you to make the most of potential specials with a wide range of airlines.

    • I've got a bank issued AMEX at no extra cost (part of package).

      • Bank issued AMEX cards are not the same as AMEX issued cards. Completely different reward systems.

        • Absolutely agree. But I'm still an Ozbargainer with an AMEX card.

        • Same… i have an amex issued amex and I've yet to use it.. And it's totally free.

    • Some OzBargainers save soooooo much that they are now secretly carrying Centurion cards…… thats the only reason I have seen thats worth having AMEX for lol…..j/k

      • Too bad, you need to actually spend money with Amex for a while in order to get an invite. Even spending $300-400k a year doesn't necessary buy you an invite. $5k a year and a $5k signup fee….thanks but no thanks.

        • You mean YOUR NOT makin this much on your savings here!!!!??? SAY. IT. ISN'T. SO!!!! (ToT)

        • for some people who needs STATUS they will pay more than that. rich in money but poor in heart imho

    • I have $0 annual fee AMEX, and I earn 1 QF point per $ spent. I dont even know what the interest rate is as I have never paid the account late. I think it may be around the 20% mark, but thats a non issue for me. Its an AMEX Qantas discovery card, still available to apply for and come with 7.5k bonus QFF points.

    • BMW American Express Gold Card $0 Annual Fee 1FF Point Per $1 + $100 David Jones Gift Card
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/36090

    • My AMEX is direct from AMEX (not a bank) and I pay no annual fees at all, plus i earn Qantas FF points. It's a great card to have and always try to use it first.
It's just unfortunate that about half the places I try don't accept it.

  • Great post op.

Though I share the sentiment that if something messes up, you'll be left with loads of points and no money!

  • +1

I think the only people that are upvoting it are ones that are impressed by this guys ingenuity rather than going out on a limb and buying the flights.. well done tho, beat the banks at their own game..

    • You fly business class when you see a good deal on ozbargain!

      • I recently went to the UK and flew royal brunei for $1380 return.. Even if its a bargain of the century, $4k isn't even anywhere close to $1.3k..

        • That's cheaper than economy!

    • or just making a mock on this deal:)

  • I just wonder what the cost of an upgrade from Economy to a J class fare would be after booking those cheap Qantas fares on expedia.com.br?

    • Usually, cheap economy fares fall into discount seat buckets, which can't be upgraded (amongst other restrictions).

      • True, I tried to upgrade it from Qantas website, but it can't be upgraded.

    • Forget about Qantas.
They want 12.8K one way for AU - UK redemption on Business class
Even if your booking class is eligible for upgrade, it will most certainly cost more than the 51,000 miles required on MH redemption.

    Sorry Guys
This is not a deal as you cannot purchase 51,000 amex points. the points purchase can be used as a top up only.
You cannot purchase 51 K points as no airline will allow that and the seats are limited for points redemption.
If this was allowed airline would not sell any J fares and all seats would be redeemed
    No Deal for me
    Need to ne removed
