However the Jaycar one is $119 (RRP $149). The DS one is $30. Big price difference!
      http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MB3594

    • +2

Sorry, but did you notice the massive price difference as well ?

      • +14

i did , but the OP referred to this one in his post as identical to the jaycar one before he edited his post

I just put the specs of the Jaycar one here so the OP knows what im talking about

        • +1

ill give ya a plus for that.

        • +1

          OK, got it

  • Nice find, show as instock at almost every where.
Not sure if computer glitch though

  • +1

Can this charge a car/motorcycle battery? Or no charge feature?

  • Thanks for the post … just clicked for one.
will pick it up in 1 hour and let you all know if this is another misprinted !!

    • went to the store but they told me that they didn't send the confirmation sms because there were no stock (even though the web page said 5+ available)… umm disappointed. should have called them up first and save the petrol. (-) to DSE at Carrington.

  • Thanks heaps for the post! Got them to hold one for me till the morning, very happy first time DSE actually had some stock!

  • +2

I dont need one, but I bought one anyway…. damn u OzBargain.

  • Got 1 at DSE Sunshine,Vic …Think they have 1 left.

  • Crazy price. Some useful info in this thread: www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105814
This pack most likely contains a 12Ah battery.

  • Just ordered one …
    Well picked up OP

    • +1

Different model, thats the entry , this is the big one!

      • My bad. They both look the same!

      • -4

This one is hardly 'big'. Mikinoz, I'm surprised that the one you linked even exists. Maybe it was designed to jump start ride-on lawnmowers…

        • +1

jeez its a comparison settle petal lol

I use the little one for the compressor and as a portable power supply, the jump starting is a small bonus

        • +3

Tas, I have one of these little ones and i jump started a 'big' jeep grand cherokee today first shot. Shove that in ya pipe and smoke it.

  • How long is the battery in these good for?

    • I got one.last time.and decided to test how long it would.last. so I plugged in my 32" TV into the inverter side and it went for about 2 hours with a little less than 1/4 battery left.

  • Same as what you'd expect in a $149 RRP device :)

    • -1

Not if the batteries in these are significantly sulphated-up. High possibility.

    • -8

Mikinoz, settle yourself petal. It is a comparison. A unit with a (likely) 12Ah battery is really only properly useful for a jumpstarting a car with a very small engine.
You'll find the jumpstarting ability of the 8Ah battery in your unit to be a very small 'bonus' indeed.

      • +1

        Who cares its double right?

        This http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67451

        Vs

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/107693

Never once have i mentioned what it will start and what it doesnt, fact is i dont/wont use it as a jump starter. It does have other uses note the 3 in 1.

And for your info i didnt provide a link previously, note the different username

        • +1

Can someone please neg Tas (im out). Has no idea what hes on about. I have the 300A version and it jump starts everything!

        • -6

Yep Mikinoz, and thanks so so much for posting the link to this deal, and another one to leonhart's link.

Terribly sorry I didn't 'reference' what you said to the link posted by leonheart.
You described this unit as 'the big one' with an exclamation point. People buying a jumpstarter/multi-purpose pack for the first time might like to know that this is in fact a small unit, trumped only by yours.

A peanut is bigger than a pine nut, but neither is 'the big one!'
          That's in Kingaroy.

          Why do I bother?

edit: Fincky, I gave you a plus vote because someone gave you a neg. You have such a cute name.
Your battery can't have been too flat.

        • Battery was dead, has been replaced with a new one. we tried to jumpstart with a crewman ute first and could not start it.

      • Tas - there are some useful comments in the previous thread which clear up some of the mystery around power ratings and what not, this for example: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/96068#comment-1285529

My understanding (thanks to some helpful posters) is that these "jump starters" are basically charging your car battery enough to the point where it can crank over. The lower the rating means it takes longer to charge (5 minutes for example), but it will get there.

One member reported getting a V8 to turn over using a 400 amp unit.

For the record, I haven't used my 300 amp unit but the air compressor works well and it seems like good value for money.

        • -1

Fincky, simply put, you may not have got your Jeep started had you not tried with your mate's ute first. If you want to chance it next time, feel free.

Cyssero, your understanding is not my understanding - and, quips aside, I always endeavour to be a 'helpful' poster too.

To put any significant amount of charge into a battery, be it the one in your phone or your car, there needs to be significant voltage difference involved.
In the case of cars this is one of the reasons for why these crappy little things came into being: www.porta-jump.com/ . They deliver a ridiculous voltage to the battery.

A very healthy gel cell in a jumpstarter pack, even though around 13 volts, still only provides a very, very slight charge 'effect' to a sub-par battery. The difference in the amp capacity of the jumpstarter makes no difference at all to the charge effect.

As for the commenter named 'storyteller' in your third link; I would like to know just what the voltage was of the 'completely flat' battery in his V8.

Even the smallest jumpstarter pack will start a car when the battery is just below threshold - especially if while setting up the jumpstarter pack to use the main battery gets a few minutes to rest, and partially, chemically, regenerate.
A little bit of aspirin in each cell can also help (not a joke).

  • 1 left Perth saw it on the shelf

  • Mine stays charged months at a time. I use it for my 12v telescope and charging iPhones while camping and the meter doesn't even go down… Handy as a lantern as well but not very wide area of light.

    • +5

Lead-acid batteries need to be kept topped-up to last, otherwise irreversible sulphation builds up. If you're not plugging in the charger every couple of months (three at the outside) you'll end up getting a much shorter service life.
I put reminders in my phone for the half-dozen lead-acids I have kicking around.

      • I like the idea of phone reminders! Cheers tas

  • Wow great price!! I got one last time.for 75$

  • Just picked one up, awesome bit of gear, didn't really need one but hey $30 great to keep in the boot and will be handy for camping. It does everything…..

  • Really need it but out of luck lol~

  • managed to get one for my sister and one for myself…went to 2 dse :D

  • Pick mine up tomorrow. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Awesome price for an awesome device. Well done OP! Love these things and have enough so I passed to let another OB'er to enjoy one :)

    • Cheers, have grabbed, pick it up tomorrow. Great find.

  • Ok ordered one for pickup.
When do I get the conformation email.

  • care guys coz i ordered one to pick up and the store had none…did it twice and then i just called them up and asked them to phsyically check each store untill i got a hit :D but then u run the risk of the staff noticing it and gobbling it up for themselfs :D

    • but then u run the risk of the staff noticing it and gobbling it up for themselfs :

LOL, DSE staff have bad reputation due to this ….

  • Yeah that's what I was worried about. They'll sell them all before checking the online orders.

  • just bought the last in bendigo to save anyone else the trouble of looking.

    • I picked one up this morning, and someone else had one reserved behind the counter

      • yeh that was moi johnno

  • Well no email at all received so I went back into my dick smith acc and its missing from the order list?
    So prob missed out.
    Store not answering phone.

    • All good.
Recieved a sms to pick up this morning.
      Just collected.

  • Any luck for NSW? It seems out of stock everywhere here…

    • There's some left in Mittagong, I've clicked and reserved one there hopefully it's ready for me to pick up on Monday morning…

      • Good find! Thanks for sharing the info. Unfortunately I live up the north, it'll take me some efforts to get to Mittagong. Guess no luck for me this time :(

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is on sale because it's actually not that useful. Hence, nobody is buying it at RRP?

    • +1

More like most guys will head to Repco/Supercheap/Autobarn for these kind of stuff.

    • +1

Nah, these are pretty useful but not for everyone. More likely the inbuilt battery is getting a bit old. Not a problem but will have a slightly shorter lifespan than a fresh one. To me these are worth every cent of their RRP so at this price they're un-@#$-believable!

  • crappy video but you'll get the idea….
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XflQBpPrvR4

    • It looks a little like pikachu at the start.

  • Were instock at almost everywhere 2 hours ago, now all low stock or out of stock
Not sure if ozbargainer and dicksmith staff at work or a typical glitchy dicksmith online system.

  • Another DS waste of time, no stock within 25km of Caroline Springs, west Melbourne

    • Your almost 4hrs too late. Dicksmith & clearance = only for the first hour after its posted max.

    • i got the last one in sunshine DSE at about 6.50pm.

  • +1

I learned from the last time buying one of these car jump starters. I ended up never using it since there was only once when the car battery died on me, and my kind neighbors were more than happy to jump start me. The other thing is, these things do reduce their capacity to hold charge after 1 year or so; even if you recharge it daily/weekly to its maximal limit, you will reach a point where it does charge to maximum but does not hold that maximal charge for more than 2 days without being used. I'm saving my thirty for another deal. =)

  • Can you 'click and collect' it from a store with stock and request them to do a transfer of the item to a closer store?

    • They won't do this. Especially for a $20.00 item.

      • Worth a try maybe?

  • Thanks got 1 from cas

  • I got the last one at Watergardens at 6:30pm

    • Watergardens is showing up as "in stock" this morning (Saturday) ?

  • Thanks got the only one from Cockburn WA

    • +1

      legit…its called cockburn? ha

      • +1

yup… can also get them Innaloo, WA… legit.

      • +1

People pronounce it 'Co-burn', I say if that's how it's meant to be pronounced why the hell would it have the extra 'ck' in there?

    • yeh it's a waist high fire prone area well on your way to Innaloo

  • +2

Might be similar to the Eaton UPS deal a little while back when DSE were getting rid of units with SLA batteries close to or past their "expiry" date without advetising that fact. I picked up one of those and it met the published runtime figures despite being past expiry, but it's something to watch out for and if there are expiry dates on the box for these, check the available stock for the newest one.

  • Anyone has experience sending a click &collect order but never receive a ready to pick up email or
    Sms?

    • I never received a confirmation but when I went to the store I had ordered from they were ready to pick up.

  • Got the last one at Winston Hills.

  • I got the display model from Altona. No box or power adapter so they reduced it to $10. Can I ask a favor of those who have a complete unit to post the specs of the charging adapter and if it's not too much trouble to scan the instruction manual for me?

    Many Thanks

    • I`ll do that for you this aft, drop me a pm with your email address :)

      • PM sent, thanks :)

        • +1

          Check your pm :)

      • I bought the display model from Nowra and it had no manual. I'd really appreciate it if you could email me a copy too. I've sent you a pm with my email address.
        Thanks.

        • +1

Doing it this very minute :)

  • does this thing have enough air pressure to blow out a air filter?

  • I so wanted one of these :(

  • None left at west lakes DSE (adelaide)
