at this rate, would it be feasible to replace the NBN with this stuff?

    • +1

BAHAHAHA probably! Ask our new PM!

    • +4

Still copper. You might be able to help the Coalition, though!

    • +1

Clearance product, stock is limited. - only if you build a very small NBN ;)

      • Ladies and Gentlemen,
I give you… the Nerimbera Broadband Network!

  • +1

Got the cat 6 cable. Thanks

Edit: Damn just got a call from dicksmith sales person. Sold out in the store i ordered from. Mt Ommaney QLD

  • Maximum 3 so got 3 for pickup

    • i ordered a bundle (>3) for delivery

  • -2

Note this is a crossover cable, used to connect 2 pc's together. You want a patch or straight for modems/routers.

    • crossovers don't work on routers?

      • +5

It should work with all new (post 2000 - guessing the timing here) modems

        • exactly what I thought too

      • +8

I've used crossover cables for this purpose before. Most Modems/Routers are smart enough to realize its a crossover cable and adapt accordingly

      • +4

most decent routers can auto-switch and are happy with crossover cables

        • +1

If you are using Gigabit Ethernet on both ends then you don't need to use a cross over cable.

        • Not sure why the Giga comment was neg'd - I thought it was correct.

In which case, are there any (dis)advantages to using cross-over for Giga?

        • +2

None - connecting via a crossover to a GbE switch just looks like a straight through connection to a GbE PC; either case is handled properly.

The trick is that unlike 100BaseT, where there were dedicated transmit and receive pairs in the cable (and two pairs left unused), in gigabit Ethernet the devices send and receive simultaneously on all four pairs. The devices work out which pairs are which as part of setting up the link. Despite having used gigabit Cat 5 Ethernet since about 2002, I am still amazed at how well it (mostly) works.

      • +1

modern switches and routers should auto-detect

    • +5

      It isn't 1996 anymore.

    • +1

The vast majority of switches and other networking items have Auto MDI/MDI-X ports which mean that they will work with standard or crossover cables

  • +1

    Stock in StMarys. Thanks

  • -5

We went through all this a week ago. Almost no stores actually have these in stock (if any do), even if the site shows they do. Soon after you lodge your click & collect you'll get a call telling you the bad news.

Same goes for all these $1 items.

    • I got my $1 tv cable from Mt Ommaney QLD

    • @bazzaaaaa You're wrongaaaaa.

      • +1

bazzaa is pretty correct - there is the post above (8min after deal posted) where stock showing available did not exist in store http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108413#comment-1471243

Quit Stock lists to dispose of this stock went to STORES on Friday.
This was to clear stock ready for the new DS stock system & site.
A lot of stock on DS system did not exist on shelves even then.
Click & Collect orders were taken on phantom stock, which were later cancelled.
There were complaints on original posts of last weeks deals.
What was left of popular stock was snapped up using C&C by the time the list was handed to me by a helpful store manager.

DS revamped their site in the early hours of 26/6, removing searches for low stock items - not available for Click & Colect. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108413#comment-1471687
        Big changes at DS!

        • I went into a couple of stores today for the network cables, having checked online to see if they have stock left (which it said they did). Both stores said that whilst they had the stock, they couldn't sell it as they were not allowed.

        • Interesting!! Expect that is part of the new stock system. You can only buy this online.
The Quit Stock list stated to be disposed of & some managers said this meant destroyed. I am surprised stock still exists. Was supposed to be got rid of days ago, before the new DS online system. The manager who gave me the list (an OBer) said not to post it as all stock was suposed to be cleared by late last Friday.

    • got last 2 from packenham store (with delivery - it's worth more than $5 to get there)

  • I tried to get it home delivered as no stock near me. It kept estimating postage as $0 as "small item". But refused my credit card. So I selected paypal and…it gave an error saying it refused my credit card (instead of redirecting to paypal like it was supposed to).

Even though I'd put in my postcode and got delivery fee calculated, at the payment page it still said "delivery cost to be calculated". Even though my address was also entered and known and locked in.

    Stupid website.

    • Other deal's expired.

    • Strange, the link to the cable on that deal is broken :/

I still appreciate this post though, I wouldn't have realised these were on sale otherwise. Gave away my only long cable recently which was a bit stupid, so this will be just great :)

      • +1

Old deal is not really exired. Old links to DS deals are broken as Site was revamped early on 26/6.

  • Hmm. I bought 3 delivered and the payment went through Paypal, but I haven't received any emails from DS. I created an account after the order, and it said it would link the order to my account, but there are no orders in the "My orders" account section. I've managed to find the paypal reciept number going back through the pages, but not the order number. This puts a bit of a downer on the situation :(

    • Just got my order confirmation. Took a little while.

    • i never use paypal for reputable local retailers, just credit card. if you have any issues you have to open a dispute via paypal. if you use credit card then you just contact the retailer directly to get things fixed up.

i got my order confirmation immediately btw

I just tried to login to check a previous order and my password didn't work… a notification appeared saying they had just upgraded their website and it would need to be reset.

When I reset it I got an email saying "hello firstname lastname" - I followed that link and sure enough my name according to them is now "firstname lastname"…

Lost my order history including the click and collect reservation I made on Saturday. Ugh!

    • hmm same thing happened to me, all my previous orders and even paid for outstanding unfilled orders are all missing

    • DS has completely changed site. Old DS links fail, old accounts lost. Checked my order (waiting weeks) on 25th, but my account was inopperative on 26th. Not happy! http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108413#comment-1471687

  • So this cable can be used as the normal one nowadays like: pc to router, router to modem, router to ps3…etc, except that it has an extra feature of connecting pcs together right?

    • It can be used as a "normal" cable on most modern equipment that has MDI-X.
Everything with gigabit should support it.

Impossible to say for sure unless we know what router you have.

      • you really think he's still using a router in 2013 that isn't capable of auto crossover???

        • -1

Quite possibly, sure. I bet there's tonnes of older routers out there that people are still using.

I only replaced my equipment last year when I moved over to 802.11n.

  • Dupe - sort of…
Some items may still be available on http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/107618 but links have changed as DS site was completely revamped in the early hours of 26/6, as noted at the end of that deal. Hence incorrectly marked as EXPIRED, but most stock was OzBargained.

Discussed in forum "Should Dick Smith Deals be Banned" that morning http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105258?page=1#comment-14681…

Only products available for Click and Collect can be searched for, after clicking "Buy Now or Click & Collect" & providing postcode.
So low stock that I saw, & bought 2 of (8 pack Eneloops for $20), on the shelves at the end of 25/6 no longer appears on the DS system!
You now need to know it is in a particular store, or possibly ask a DS store to search for stock.
Part of the big revamp by the new owners & rumoured push to online sales.

    • -1

Interesting comment by narz above (lost in negs)… http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/108413#comment-1471829
You can not buy these cables by walking into a store showing C&C availability. You need to C&C first!!
You can only buy this online. Expect that is part of the new DS stock system, site & business model.

  • -1

These cables, along with $1 6 outlet Surge Catcher powerboards etc, went on sale as DISPOSE OF in Quit Stock list to stores on Friday.

No Click & Collect in Brisbane area - probably already OzBargained as I could not find stock on Friday.
Link for cable on mobile site http://m.dicksmith.com.au/computer-accessories/dick-smith-10…

    • +1

arrgh, i can't believe i missed out on the power boards. i saw the title about the tv stand but never read the post details :(

      • -1

Thats the problem when so much stock goes on special at the one time ;)
But VERY FEW - old stock & model number left out the back by managers in some stores just in case.
I was in the store talking with the manager when the phones started ringing & C&C orders came in.
OBers knew about the DS deal before the store manager!
Had picked up the great $13 Sangean DAB radio. I was lucky to get some stock before it was all gone in minutes!
Picked up rolls of Gaffer Tape only to find it had been sitting around so long it was hardly sticky :(

But the changes to the site early yesterday was a shock, as searching for rare bargains (not available for C&C) is no longer possible :((

  • i bought this with 3 Tb seagate hard drive which gives me shipping free..and will cancel order i made this morning for only hard drive

  • Click and collect 3 cables for $3.00 this afternoon. I immediately got a call from DS offering me 2 10m cables and 1 15m cable for the same price. Just picked up from Morley (WA). I don't believe there is any left.

  • Less cables for the stock take !!! ha hahaa

  • So I checked and (after 25 mins on hold) found that my order didn't go through, even though Paypal charged it. Will have to lodge a dispute for that order.

While the lady suggested it, do you guys think it's worth trying again to order? Or will I just be tying up more money for a few months while Paypal refunds it :/

    • Update: Since the last comment I filed a dispute and was issued a refund, so I'm pretty happy with that. I think I'll try and order again.

      • Did you confirm they still had stock? I find it hard to believe they would still have stock because this has been listed for 1 week now and with people buying 5-10 cables at a time I can't see there being stock available, DS are notorious for over selling and then cancelling orders afterwards.

        • Hmm, that would have been a good idea. The lady I talked to said 'maybe order again if the site still has stock' though she didn't actually check :/

I tried ordering again, and same thing happened. I made sure I was logged in, but the order still didn't come through onto my account. Another refund incoming!

  • No stock in Metro WA that I can see.

  • +1

"Click&Collect" = You click it, staff cancel it and collect it for themselves …

    • lol i reckon, missus went to the store and the guy said it WAS last week deal. I like FOR REAL !!!

    • Come off it - there just is not much stock left after 1 week of being OzBargained! I posted about this above.
I was in a store with stock listed when the deal came through last Friday. Was talking with the manager & we both looked for the supposed stock - there was none - a week ago!!

  • WEST AUSTRALIAN Local store told me there are none in WA Stores however heaps in warehouse, cost me $9.00 for 5 cables ($5 del) which I deal with

  • Thanks got two today… staff member was umm surprised @ $2.00 for two cables (plus another 5% off using gift card ;)

  • There were 4 cables in Carousel WA on Sunday, but not any more! :)
    Paid $2.40 total.
