Great name brand Android phone for the price. $149US delivered. Lowest I can find them for. Bought one for me folks. Now, this is not the latest and greatest but for a brand name Android phone with a large 4.5 inch screen with GPS, 8MP camera with quad core CPU and dual sim, I think it is quite decent. • good for optus network amirite?

    • -1

yep. Its almost worth a punt, but I'm not sure that the Lenovo name altogether removes the taint of what is otherwise a bolted together chinaphone.

Still, a nice little business for $149.

      • +9

Name an Australian phone. Bolted or otherwise.

  • I have the a660. perfect size if you install go keyboard. Phone is perfect except navigation doesn't work.. always crashes when i run it. Optus works fantastic with this phone - fastest of all the sims I've tried on it

  • -6

Good deal but if its $149 AUD instead of $149 USD, it will be an even better deal.

  • Want to get it for my Parents, would be their first smart phone. After a Smart Phone that's reliable, Cheap and won't crash on them and confuse the crap out of them every 2 seconds. Primary purpose is for texting and calling. And why are people saying this phone is so good with Optus? Is it unlocked?

    • +1

      3G: WCDMA 900/2100MHz

No 850Mhz support, which means no Telstra 3G and limited Vodafone 3G (I've never been with Vodafone so have idea how far coverage is)

      • yay finally a deal for those of us on LC/vaya cheap plans.
looks like a pretty hot deal if you need the dual sim for work etc
this reminds me of the garmin deal and I think support will be as non existent on this too.

        • I was having a look around for other 900/2100mhz phones as i am on optus aswell. Found this one, better screen, similar processor?, appears to have Play store as well…

What do you guys think, think its a better deal than this one?

        • review http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmNUcoMcNdE

after sales support may be a let down.

        • Performance on this low end Snapdragon is the worst of all the Quad cores to date - but still quicker than every Dual core out there. Not a bad phone and its the cheapest with NFC enabled if that is your thing..

        • ok I now like the faea F1 better

        • Yeah, then there is the Faea F2 and the one that HuntsmanII linked too, which looks like its too good to be true.

Get this instead for Telstra / Voda 850mhz:

        http://www.banggood.com/THL-W100-4_5-Inch-4G-ROM-Android-4_2…

Similar price. Brand not as well known, but probably better quality, build and much much better in performance than this Lenovo.

  • +1

I was looking at this phone myself. Apparently it has some Chinese things stuck on it, and is unable to access the Google Play store out of box.
Besides that it is a good phone. It can be found at this price at many other stores, so I personally would want to be checking out the trustworthiness and reliability of the site.

    • +1

If it has no Google Play store, you will need to find a way to root it by installing CWM recovery on it. Shouldn't be too difficult but getting the drivers installed for MTK is a real pain in the butt.

      http://www.needrom.com/mobile/lenovo-a820-12/

I had the cheaper variant of this phone which was the Lenovo A789. The build quality was pretty good (for the price) and felt very solid in the hands.

    • Ouch re: no Play Store, like having an iPhone with no App Store.

PS I have bought from that site before without issues

      • +3

Ive changed my mind. no play store, no deal!

  • It shows for me AU$165.14

  • sure this is 4G capable?
Can't find anything in the specs that confirms this.

    • +4

I think it's 4G as in 4GB of internal storage, not the 4G band. Title could do with the extra B assuming there's room.

      • Looks like it. been fixed now, thanks!

        • +3

Well now it says 4GB memory which isn't correct either really, it's 4GB storage, 1GB RAM/memory. Meh, whatever ;)

  • bg2013 for 15% off orders of $70+

id buy it if I had a bit more spare case.

    • This coupon code doesn't work for this phone.

      • I see, maybe because its discuounted already?

It might be cheaper to buy the ones from Aliexpress then.

    • coupon code not working.
How does this compare to the Aldi one?

      • +3

        aldi phone is 512MB, avoid!

  • -2

nice almost had me but no next G, not bad for 159 (which its showing for me at)

  • WHAT WOULD SCOTTY DO?

  • Seems no warranty policy on it. Seller pays for both ways in case of repairs …
I'd better wait for Aldi next week.

    • They're not even close. The Aldi phone has 512mb RAM. That much is acceptable only if you're a complete smartphone noob who uses the phone only to call or play some angry birds.

      • What apps require more than 512mb ram or is it multitasking problem as Android often lets apps turn themselves on in the background all the time?

      • +1

I agree. 512MB of RAM is too little for an Android device. Mine has about 700MB (Galaxy Nexus) and it's not enough. The system (JB 4.2.2) uses up well over 450MB. Hopefully the 5.0 release will make good on its promises of optimisations.

        • +1

It depends what you do with it. I have a LG P705 (4.1), single core w/512mb. Most of the time it's fine and runs with between 80-100mb free. But there are apps that just kill it (eg di.fm) by using a fair chunk of ram, after running that everything else goes to pooh.

    • was thinking of getting this too. how is it?

  • Can anyone help me to find the official lenovo page reg. this model? It is a real lenovo deal or any other fake chinabrand (i know lenovo is own by chinrse company) thx

  • Appears no Google Play, any custom rom?

  • Seems like a Chinese phone to me. Main giveaway is the MTK processor. They aren't bad but they aren't particularly good either.

    • They are on par with at LEAST a Tegra 3 but with better support for the newer Android versions coming out (4.2 / 5) since most Tegra 3 suppliers announced a stop to development at 4.2.

  • How would this compare with a Samsung Galaxy S? Is it an upgrade in performance and function?

    • +4

The original S? This would be at least 3 times faster and it runs Android 4.1 Battery life is .25 times larger and camera is sharper.

Antutu scores for MTK 6589 is roughly 13000 while the original Galaxy does around 4000.

      • Thanks for that!

  • +2

I looked into this phone and nearly got it, but then found out it has no Google Play and no flash. Bit of a showstopper for me.

  • +1
  • I think for the price the Lenovo is a good deal compared to other models for the same price or similar.

    • I actually think that's a fair thing to say. I've read a few really good reviews here and there about Lenovo's phones, but phone-wise (and tablet-wise for that matter), Lenovo has pretty much decided that the rest of the world can go and jump.
They're focussing on the Chinese domestic market. Might turn out to be a good strategy for them.

  • +3

No Google Play, no flash, Chinese focused phone. What, do you hate your parents?

Spend an extra $100 and get a THL W8 or something like that. The frustration it will save YOU, let alone them, will be worth the extra.

Or for $150 extra get the THL W8 Beyond. Yes, that's double your budget so might not be doable.

    • +2

      Spend an extra $100

That's 67% over budget. If you are a project manager …

    • I think though you may be right about the features it lacks, the main reason people would prefer this phone (apart from the price) is that it has 900mhz 3G

  • Will this work with Telstra (Kogan mobile) and if so, would it be ok to purchase the non-multilingual version which still has English, for $10 less? As long as I can use it with Kogan and it's easy to get English to show on the phone, I might purchase as $150 is my limit and this seems the best at the moment.

    • +2

It doesn't have 850mhz 3G. You should not get this, but the THL W100 @$159 USD instead. Very similar spec, but it comes in English language and has Play installed.

      • Thanks very much for the heads up, appreciate it! I'll take a look at that other one now. Cheers

      • Good advice. His parents may find the 4.5" a bit more manageable than my 5" suggestion.

  • +2

A dual SIM phone sounds cool, but in Australia, wouldn't you theoretically want a triple SIM phone - one for Optus, Telstra, and voda? That way you could have a plan for one of those, and use long life prepaid SIMs for the other 2. That way you'd get coverage everywhere that had coverage on any network. Thoughts?

    • +1

I doubt there is anywhere that Vodafone cover that is not covered by Telstra + Optus

      • I'm kind of assuming that the phone could be set to make a call on the network with the strongest signal - I haven't used a dual SIM phone yet.
Presumably there must be at least some places where Vodafone is the strongest signal? But I see and agree with your point that the incremental improvement of going from 2 to 3 SIMs is vastly smaller than the improvement in going from 1 to 2 SIMs.

    • +1

      No

  • On the web link, the Specification shows there is Play Store on the phone. There is one picture showing the Play Store icon as well. I don't have this phone so I cannot confirm it but why do you guy think there is no Play Store?

    • +1

Because Lenovo phones are not 'international' and Lenovo couldn't give a stuff about shipping or selling the phones overseas. Their market is mostly in mainland china, HK and taiwan. Since Google services are blocked in China, the factory ROMS Lenovo uses are tailored specifically for Baidu search engines and don't use Google Apps.

I bought a Lenovo A789 before and it came with no Google Apps (no gmail or even maps). I believe some sellers may offer a Rooted rom for you (extra charge sometimes apply), for example Etotalk.com and Merimobiles sometimes offer such a service.

      • Can you just side load this or does it require rooting?

        • You need to root before you can do any sideloading. Typically you root the phone by using a custom recovery and flashing an update.zip file.

Here are some generic instructions but please take note of where you download the ROMS and recovery images from, and also make sure they are the correct ones for your particular device. (If not, you may brick the phone). The download links, and instructions for custom ROMS and such can be found here

Sideloading google apps is done by putting the phone into CWM recovery mode, and then flashing a signed GAPPS zip file from your SD card. You don't need to do this if you flash a custom ROM since it's pre-packaged.

  • I am stuck between this, the supposed "budget" iphone, and this: http://techdy.com/shop/basic-bear/
The latter appears to be an excellent deal, as I believe the Snapdragon is superior and will have more long-livety in comparison, as well as 2GB Ram.
What would you guys pick (btw the Bear is $199)

  • Used Lenovo Le Phone (Android 2.2) before. Pretty crap phone. Looked nice but bad design. Lenovo may be good on manufacturing PCs but not the same story with phones. Hopefully they have improved.

  • Does anyone know whether these and other MTK6589 China Phones have Hotspot/Tethering?

    • My THL W8 with stock rom has in Wireless & Networks section -> Tethering & portable hotspot options like wi-fi, usb, bluetooth.etc hopethis helps…..anymore questions? If so i'll try and keep an eye on this thread.
P.S recieved my jacket from banggood today so ill tick them for being able to deliver.

      • Great, many thanks for that info. I'd suppose that pretty much all of the MTK6589 China phones will have wi-fi hotspot/tethering, then.

  • Great to see Quad core enter the sub 170-$ bracket. Gives me confidence we might soon see populated > 2G ram > ~250ppi * 6" > & must, MUST run neXt + Yes G nets. ">~230AU"

  • Need a decent screen phone for my mom and sister for virgin and 3/vodaphone respectively. So i'll keep an eye here.

  • How can it call itself Android without access to the play store,

Doesn't Google have a policy about a few core apps that have to be on a device before it can be officially called Android ?

    • +2

Android is open source…not closed source like Windows Phone or IOS. The vendors can do what they want with it, and if China wants their phones to be anti-google they can make it so.

      • Google apps like Talk, Play Store and some others are however not open source and I believe are only SUPPOSED to be available on Google certified devices….. However alot of Chinese companies realised Google Play is a selling point and shove it on anyway. :)

      • Android is open source…

It is indeed, but Google has some control over what devices can be called "Android" based on the base apps that they have installed on them.

        Here's a quote from Wikipedia.

Even though the software is open-source, device manufacturers cannot use Google's Android trademark unless Google certifies that the device complies with their Compatibility Definition Document (CDD). Devices must also meet this definition to be eligible to license Google's closed-source applications, including Google Play.[128]

        • but Google has some control over what devices can be called "Android"

No, Google has some control over what devices can be called Google certified.

That means that devices that are not certified by Google are not eligible to install Google's closed source applications eg Google Play. It does not change that the operating system is open source or called Android.

      • So Google's content with China running software; whilst I am alright with this too. TY Merimobile > Canada for my Device which was called a 'Haipad! ;)

Google happens to control its phoneware "Nexus", instead of Lenova too-.

        • addendum
*And I would just add software as being that of the open and generic base Android, or otherwise those "certified compatible" Google apps.

This is what Google support put forth regarding to Play app, access.
If you're experiencing issues with the Google Play website or the Google Play app, please verify that your device is included on the list below. If your device isn't listed, it's possible that your device is newly released or may not be listed for other reasons.

Certainly pays to fact check status(= supported).

        • Agree,
I take back the neg !

          Bow to you my lord.

Had to spend 3 hours to root and install a custom ROM that is in English. But now very happy with my purchase.

For those in Sydney's Eastern suburbs where all the rich people live, there's a new Aldi at Bondi Junction that has just opened.

    Top discoveries today:

    1. They have consistent pricing nationwide (except for a few specials - i think it's the once-offs). This is good if you live where transport etc is expensive, like Sydney.
    2. There are no carry baskets because poor people steal them.

Aldi are awesome because they sell Yogurt made in Tasmania's Tamar Valley - $2.79/550g [there is a God].

  • Shipping time to Australia was 7-25 business days. Lengthy wait if you need a new handset.
