This looks like a terrible deal put in place to make you buy a car every 3 years.

    • +3

I don't think you're obliged to buy another C-class in 3 years time under the terms of the promotion. But if you do (within the very limited time period provided) you get an additional $6500 off that purchase too.

I suppose it suits people who are purchasing now in that they save $6500, and it doubly suits people who upgrade their C-class every 3 years. (I am neither of these people. Haha)

      • +4

For people who can afford to buy a new Benz every 3 years, $6.5k is no object to them. That, or they can get better discounts than $6.5k through arrangements they have with dealers, or their employer's arrangements with dealers.

In other words, I'm not sure who this is for. If you can get $6.5k off a $30k car, that would be a good deal. As a percentage discount, you always aim for at least 15% off the drive away price when you haggle with a dealer. $6.5k off the price of a C-class is kind of meh.

        • +2

15% off drive away? Insane unless its rrp. Some advertised drive away campaigns are lucky to have $1000 profit for a $38990 car

        • +1

I don't necessarily disagree with the thrust of your criticism lostn, but there aren't any cars in Australia being sold with a 15% premium at the dealership. As Spackbace said, dealers are lucky to make a grand on a midrange car.

$6500 ends up being about 10% off for a C-class (and this is coming from the manufacturer), so its nothing to turn one's nose up at. At the very least it's quite a few added options for no increase in price. And I can't think of any other car being sold at the moment where you can get 10% of rrp (plus a guaranteed 10%-ish percent off in the future if you buy at a certain time).

If you're in the market for a C-class, this is a sweet deal.

        • +1

the tight margins you refer to mostly applies to the small car/budget brands where a price difference of $500 can make a huge difference in market capitalisation. luxury makes like merc/bmw/audi have much more room for discount especially if you have an established relationship with the dealer (corporate/prof membership etc) so while it represents substantial saving it's nothing to jump up and down about either

        • 15% off drive away? Insane unless its rrp.

Of course it's off RRP + onroads. Sometimes you can do better. It depends on the car.

Some advertised drive away campaigns are lucky to have $1000 profit for a $38990 car

Was it the dealer who told you they only make $1000 profit? They're not the most believable people in the world.

I'm not counting campaigns in any case. I'm counting full price.

You will find that even if the dealer doesn't make that much margin on each car, they can still do big discounts during promos because the factory is the one that's cutting the price. The factory makes more than the dealer, and they're willing to subsidise them. You'll find this always happens during runout sales where the car is discounted by more than 20% sometimes.

Err.. like I said, my sister in law got $10k off a $60k Merc Benz.

Dealers price their RRPs with room for haggling. They anticipate it. They never reveal their true price, because very few people actually pay the full price. I've known plenty of people who got more than 15% off RRP. There's an entire thread on whirlpool on it about discounts negotiated.

A broker has offered me bigger discounts than that. Timing matters.

If a dealer tells me there's only $1000 to be made, I don't believe them. They're among the least trustable people in the world.

BTW, I'm not sure if 'midrange' includes MBenz.

If I had the money to buy a Benz, I'm not settling for only $6.5k off. And them offering me a further $6.5k off my next car in 3 years time, well they're making more than $6.5k off me on the next car so they'd be the ones in front.

If you're in the market for a C-class, this is a sweet deal.

          Eh.. your money I guess.

And I can't think of any other car being sold at the moment where you can get 10% of rrp (plus a guaranteed 10%-ish percent off in the future if you buy at a certain time).

Jesus… Just this year I had a relative buy a Lancer LX auto this year for just under 23k in metallic with some extras. Their website advertised the car for over 30k RRP DA. We all know website RRPs are bulldust. Just now I check Hyundai's website for the price of an i30 Elite Auto, and it's 30.5k drive away in metallic. I bought it for under 25k this year. That's 5.5k off RRP, which is more than 10%, and almost as big a 'discount' as the C-class. And these cars count as 'midrange' or even cheaper.

If you read newspaper ads, you may often notice '3-day weekend' campaigns where cars are being sold at RRP, and all the onroad costs are slashed (dealer delivery, CTP, stamp duty, rego, etc). That discount is usually more than 10% of the recommended drive away price already. VW does this a lot, and their dealer delivery alone is 2k for most cars. Subaru is another who does this. When that drive away deal is on, you can get a base model Impreza for $23,990 where it would normally cost about $28k according to their website price calculator. That's a 4k saving. That means they're obviously making more than the $1000 per car that you're claiming they barely scrape. In some cases the dealer really doesn't make that much, but due to the promotion, the factory is subsidising it, in which case it's the factory that loses margin, not the dealer. To you though, who cares who is losing the margin, as long as it's a bargain for you? Those insane finance deals (1%-2%) again are subsidised by the factory.

The point is, RRPs are BS and way over-inflated unless it's one of those $19,990 or $20,990 base model Corollas/Mazda3/etc.

I presume the 6.5k off the C-class is based on the RRP, which is already heavily inflated to pre-emptively counteract haggling.

If you can't find any cars that can be discounted by 10%, either you're not very good at negotiating, or you're buying 20k cars. Or you believe what dealers tell you about their profit margins. Some brands don't discount much. Some discount a lot. YMMV. MB is not a brand that won't discount, unless you're getting the new A-class.

People who buy at fleet pricing for example get bigger discounts than private customers (easily more than $1000 cheaper than a private can). According to you, the dealer would be making a big loss to every fleet customer. Wait till you see how cheap insurance companies can buy them for…

If I'm a MB dealer, and I can get a customer to guarantee they'll buy another car from me in 3 years time if I give them another 6.5k off, I'll be all over it.

The other thing you're overlooking is that dealers don't make their money only from cars sold. They get massive factory bonuses if they reach sales targets. When I was in the market for a car a few months ago, a broker told me about a current special on BMW X5s which were going for 40k off! Bringing them just below the luxury car tax threshhold. BMW dealers were making a loss on these, but the bonus they were getting from BMW Australia more than offset the loss on each car sold, so to them it was worth it. That is how brokers can sometimes get massive discounts. 6.5k doesn't seem all that impressive after that.

        • Thank you lostn for your detailed explaination. Your points are well made.

        • My figure of $1,000 comes from actually being in the industry, seeing real world figures ;)

Depending on fleet sizes, in some instances the private cost is actually cheaper.

Despite the fact we are considered some of the most untrustworthy people, you'd be surprised just how many cars get sold with little to no profit, and occasionally into negative real world territory.

So keep believing we have stacks of money to move, coz sometimes we just don't ;)

    • I'll swap you for my SLR.
bonnet is too long, can't see anything when coming out the driveway.

I saw this in the paper and commented back then how shizer this deal is.

    A) It encourages you to buy a new C Class whe the one you had is still good.

    B) It 'locks' you into a C Class.

    C) It 'locks' you into a Mercedes.

    D) You will have very little bargaining power when dealing the second buy.

For the amount of loyalty Merc's expect, 6.5 Large is very small.

  • ewww, don't buy! the discounted ones don't carry v8 engines!

  • Is this deal just because the new season of Top Gear UK has started airing?

  • You can buy refurbished for much cheaper.

  • +16

    This is hilarious.

You can easily get more than $6.5k off your Benz by haggling with them. My brother's wife got $10k off a $60k Benz and I don't even think it was that great a bargain.

$6.5k is nothing off the RRP of a Benz unless it was the new A class.

I like how they try to lock you into a buying another Benz in 3 years time to get another $6.5k discount. The car you buy now will have depreciated tens of thousands when you trade it in.

Make no mistake. This is a bargain for Mercedes Benz, not for you. They're the ones who gain from this. If you have any negotiation skills at all, you can do better than $6.5k on your own.

  • I'll take 10.

    • +1

You're in luck. If you buy 2 of them, you get $10 off both and a further $20 of the 3rd.

    • Technically, it's buy 9, get the 10th one free =P

      • Don't forget to buy the paint protection with them also. Wouldn't want that $60k investment to have its paint start peeling would you now?

  • You do realise that the new c class is almost out!

    • +1

No its not, New C Class will be 2015 (by the time it actually hits the market in availability)

      • It's coming out next year.

        • it depends on the source

sales should start late 2014/ early 2015

        • It's almost certain to be released next year, as Mercedes have a 7 year model cycle on the C-Class. Australia usually gets new model Mercedes very quickly - within 2 months of release in Europe in most cases.

        • It's not even an almost, it's actually a certainty. My usual Merc salesbloke already warned me not to buy a C until later when they really going to run them out or pre-order a new one.
