  • I was thinking of these or the Z5500. Can anyone explain the difference of each and in your opinion, which has the better quality ?

    • +4

      They sound the same.

Z5500 sucks up ridiculous power on standby and has a louder sub.

Spend $100 more on audio engines

      • krisspy how much power do they use on standby? more than 10w?

        • +1

:/ how big of a mistake am i making by having my z5500's on 24/7 (literally)?

        • +1

          Hmmm, I'm doing the same…

        • So I read this about the standby power draw the other week. The first time I turned it off at the switch when I was leaving for the day, it blew a fuse… god dammit.

These systems are notorious for blowing fuses, so I wasn't overly surprised, but a bit annoyed. I usually keep a few on hand as simply moving the sub slightly while powered on will often blow a fuse.

        • I leave mine on standby 24/7 because of this exact issue. 90% of the time when they are switched off at the wall, they blow a fuse. Lucky I bought a handful of them the first time it happened. They are an awesome system though. I also have the Z2300's which also pump =)

      • Think you got a lemon mate… My 5500 takes ~6w (98% accuracy meter) when turned off.

Edit: had them for over four years, never had issues with blown fuse. Had to replace the control unit once though, backlight died

        • Yeh, my backlight has also gone.. Did you fix it yourself? or was it under warranty?

Also, regarding the fuse, do you ever switch it off at the wall? It seems like that is the only time mine blows a fuse.

Maybe I need to use a different/ higher rated fuse?

        • ive had mine for 2 years with no blown fuses but then again I never turn it off. I also had the problem with the backlight turning off on my control pod but it randomly resolved itself within a month

    • Well my brother had the z5500 and I've got the z906 and he seemed more impressed with my z906 than he ever did with his z5500, I run mine from the digital output of my Asus Xonar D2 soundcard (winamp > SA Stereo tool plugin for winamp > Maiko output plugin for winamp > SRS Audio Essentials > Asus Xonar Control center > Digital output > z906) in my pc and from my PS3 and I am more than happy with it. I've had it over a year without an issue and I must say the sound quality is awesome! The sub pumps out plenty of bass (would vibrate your house to pieces if you let it) and the speakers never sound thin, muffled or distorted and oh boy is it loud!!!

    • The Z906 is the replacement model for the Z-5500. I bought a Z-5500 system from MSY for about $350 a couple of years ago, and it's being used as my main PC speaker setup at the moment. They were 100% worth the money - sound is very clear and crisp, the 10" subwoofer is not overpowering or "boomy", the headphone jack on the control unit is very handy and the silver/black colour scheme with blue LED screen looks far superior to the Z906 in my opinion.
I also have an optical SPDIF fibre running to it and it decodes Dolby Digital DVDs/BluRay flawlessly.
I mainly use my system for playing lossless music and gaming (5.1 surround took my gaming experience to the next level!), and as an audiophile myself I can safely say that you won't be disappointed with the Z-5500s, they were far better than I expected. I don't know anything about the Z906 system (they might even be the same speaker units?), but all I can say is that my system is a great buy, provided you can still find a retailer selling it.

If you were an Audiophile, you wouldn't buy Logitech speakers.

        • For some people it's this or nothing for surround sound. It was the cheapest option for me when I had no money and wanted digital optical. They're pretty good for gaming too, and you don't really get your audiophile and video game craving satisfied at the same time.

True audiophiles have a completely sealed separate room with a speaker like this to listen to their music: http://im9.cz/sk/iR/importprodukt-orig/d9c/d9c676f85f2d7a6fd…

    aren't z5500s discontinued

    • +1

Yep, I'm fairly sure the Z906 is its replacement.

  • Seems can't find it in dse mobile site?

  • +1

How do I get this delivered. DSE website says this product is not available for delivery. And my local DSE have no stocks.

    • Same here, I'm just gonna go in store and demand they order one in for the price it says on their site or they can damn well take them off the website.

  • How would these compared to a similarly (ozb similarly ;)) priced HTIB? Eg http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/114356

  • +1

No stock everywhere since last deal, and home delivery is not available. Just price match with JB hifi, you will get it if they do not check carefully.

    • If JB HiFi sold them that would be great advice

      • Check around, JB got them in stock. Got mine in JB hifi via price match last time.

I have a brand new set of 5500 in the box still. I bought 3 sets. I love em, only wish it had HDMI but optical is fine. I have a $4000 set of Jensen speakers and pioneer amp for my TV and I prefer the z5500 which only cost $280. I had plans to remove my Jensen set and mount my logitechs to the walls and ceiling but then I changed my mind… so who wants my spare set :D

    • wow seems people sell the parts on ebay for rediculous prices…

I've had mine for either 7 or 5 years. Had to replace 1 fuse. I gave Dad my 2nd set and he never uses them. I use them when I go visit once in a blue moon… His are 5yrs old too, I think he blew 1 fuse. I read an article years ago that the fuse supplied was dodgy and it needed to be upgraded with a different one…

I highly recommend the speakers! I can only assume these 906's are equal or better.

      • Any chance you have the specs on the fuse you use? I went to Jayar when mine first blew and asked them for a replacement of the same ones. They seem to blow almost every time I switch the speakers off at the wall.

  • Harvey Norman sells this for $486.
JB Hi-Fi z906 offer says "expired"

    http://www.anyprice.com.au/products/logitech-5-1ch-surround-…

  • Oh man, I wish I could justify upgrading from my Z623's to these, I absolutely LOVE the Z623s which are essentially the little 2.1 brother of these, without optical or a cool control panel w/ remote.

  • Just called them up and they are out of stock in Sydney apparently but haven't updated it online.

  • I called up the Northland store in Melbourne, and they told me the only store in victoria with stock is Aulbury.
Also it seems like you cant buy online either..

    • That said, if you go into a dick smith store, they're happy for you to put 10% down and effectively back order one :)

  • Is there no more stock left??

Bear in mind these speakers don't have HDMI. You have to use analogue or Optical/Coax. 'So what' you say? Well here's my understanding:

Optical & Coaxial audio are surprisingly limited. They can't carry uncompressed surround sound, it has to be compressed as (lossy) Dolby Digital or DTS. Furthermore, the new Blu-ray lossless audio codecs (Dolby TruHD etc) carry much higher resolution audio signals and cannot pass over coaxial or optical digital cables. But then again, the Z906 can't decode these formats anyway.

HDMI can carry all this, as well as uncompressed (LPCM) 8-channel audio. And it supports things like audio return channel which enables the TV to send audio in the opposite direction back to the speakers (i.e. for Digital TV/DVB-T).

Despite all these limitations, I'm happy with my Z-5500. It was only $290 delivered nearly three years ago. The only issue is that it only has one optical audio input so I need to use a switching device.

But these days I wouldn't buy a surround sound system without HDMI audio.

  • No home delivery… and out of stock everywhere!

  • Spoke to Nunawading (VIC) store this morning and they should have 3 or 4 coming in early this week. I've had one on backorder with them at this price since July, so looking forward to this! =D

  • I joined OzBargain to thank the OP. I've been looking for some speakers for my PC and PS3 and these look great.

I called DSE and like everyone else they are out but I have just got off the phone with office works and they beat it by 5% and also free delivery.

They are on back order but she is calling the warehouse to see what can be done
