Hehe, my wife and I are upgrading from an iPhone 3G and 3GS.

  • +3

I Couldn't resist - Snapped up an 8GB version + Moromax clear white case (eBay $8.98) all up $277.93 delivered. This is my first Android device - Ive been breastfed on iOS for long enough. It's time to release me from your bosom Apple!

    • 8GB is just not enough for a phone of this caliber IMO…

      • +2

8GB is more than enough if you don't store music and videos on the phone.

        • -1
        • If that's enough for you then great!

          What is your point?

        • My point is you don't get 8GB and with that limited space there is a lot less you can do with a phone like this…, whats your point ?, besides just defending and arguing like most of your comments ?

I replied to ttkc's specific words "8GB is more than enough…", its clearly not considering you only get about 4GB, as stated by scuba

        • +2

Since you want it spelled out:

8GB is just not enough for a phone of this caliber IMO…

This statement is false. It is not enough for some users.

8GB is more than enough if you don't store music and videos on the phone.

read up - some good facts

This comment does nothing to back up your claim, and nothing to prove ttkc wrong. If anything, it does the exact opposite.

My point is you don't get 8GB and with that limited space there is a lot less you can do with a phone like this…,

Like what? Store lots of vidoes and music perhaps?

whats your point ?, besides just defending and arguing ?

You started the argument and are not making sense.

I replied to ttkc's specific words "8GB is more than enough…",

".. IF YOU DON'T STORE MUSIC AND VIDOES ON THE PHONE" seeing as you failed to keep reading.

its clearly not considering you only get about 4GB or make that 3GB of usable space.

Wrong. You get 5.5GB of free space, it is recommended that you keep 1GB free, which leaves at least 4.5… that is not complicated mathematics.

        • +2

Bruce most of your comments are of argumentative nature, so I won't indulge…

In my view 8GB boiling down to 4.5GB is BS, especially for a phone of this specification and what it can do…

If you can gather the gist of what I'm saying, you'll know what I mean…

        • +2

That's incorrect. Mine has 5.3GB of free space without apps.

        • then you just got troll'd hard, like the rest of the sheep…

      • +5

8GB is just not enough for a phone of this caliber IMO…

IMO I saved $50 by ordering the 8GB version for the exact same product. Winning!

        • -5

IMO I saved $50 by ordering the 8GB version for the exact same product. Winning!

It a common miserly mistake, you'll soon find out why people bought the 16GB version ! :)

        • +4

It all depends on the user. I got the 16GB version as I liked to have the extra space just in case though I have more than 8GB free. I have almost 100 apps installed and a couple hundred songs. Photos are automatically backed up to Google+.

        • +1

I agree its the user, but this will be most people's everyday smartphone too and people tend to forget that, I just wanted to reiterate that, so they think about it whilst justifying if they should save that $50…, But I guess you buy what you can afford…

Anyways if ever you do need additional storage you'll need to carry a USB Y cable, a portable power unit and a USB(I think upto 32GB)…

Also rather than me "blanket" or "defend" people with a left view, I just wanted to clarify good points made earlier, that you will end up with around 4.5GBs of usable space and you'll keep justifying the purpose of that space…, that's all I wanted to highlight.

  • I ordered one yesterday night around 11pm, still did not get any shipping confirmation. Does anyone one know how long the delivery time would be? Cheers!

    • From past experience expect it next week some time. Probably early next week.

    • I ordered one on 28/08, picked up by fedex 29/08, estimated delivery is Monday 2/09, Sydney.

  • Wow, this deal is just 3 +votes away from being 3rd rank in the records!!

Peer pressure.. Got a 16 GB one.. Thanks OP

    • Hahaha ozbargain peer pressure

      That's the spirit

  • After struggling…Cancel my 8g order by phone because I think it is still too small…It's already been dispached, but still can get full refund by refuse delivery.

Maybe wait for nexus 7 2013 released and get 16g with it.

    • Dont you have 15 days to change your mind?

  • +3

Pulled the trigger and bought one yesterday too. If it wasn't for OzBargain and their peer pressure\making a deal look too good to be true, I wouldn't have purchashed a new phone

  • Price drop must mean 2013 model just down the road.

    • +1

Not necessarily. Might be to compete with the new iPhone, that happened to Nexus 7 last year, drop by $50. But the new nexus wouldn't be that far away too.

  • +2

For anyone that has purchased from the play store from August 12 onwards for the previous price can get a refund of the difference by going to this link: https://support.google.com/googleplay/contact/nexus_price

  • Time to upgrade from my Samsung Galaxy Ace yet? I'm starting to be very tempted…

    • +8

      DEFINITELY!!!!
It was time to upgrade the moment that you bought it! :-)

    • I did just that for my wife. She can't wait to get the Nexus 4…..

  • +4

To everyone who has ordered this phone, remember that it takes a micro SIM (smaller than mini SIM, bigger than nano SIM). Have a SIM cutter handy to avoid disappointment upon receiving the phone! (I got mine from MSY for $4)

    • +4
      • Or pop into one of your telcos stores and have them replace it, most likely for free.

        • +7

Good tip, but probably won't work if you're with a cheapass telco with no physical presence? (this is OzB after all!)

    • Thanks for the reminder.

On a side note: standard, mini, micro & nano sized sim cards. ffs, in what world are these variations necessary??

      • +1

On a side note: standard, mini, micro & nano sized sim cards. ffs, in what world are these variations necessary??

Standard to mini makes a lot of sense. Micro is a small improvement for fitting a little more kit in a small phone. As far as I can see Nano pretty much exists to make it that much more annoying to leave Apple products.

        • I suppose a "bees dick" is a legitimate form of measurement here.

    • With the microsim cutter you got from MSY, are you supposed to get a plastic micro sim adapter (to standard size) in the pack? I only got a blue plastic nano adapter, metal micro sim adapter (for micro to nano cutting I assume), a pick and the cutter.

  • So tempted to upgrade from my good old HTC Desire that's been running T-Mod express pretty well for sooooo long. I've got the 16gb sitting in the basket on Google play. I just can't seem to pull the trigger :S

    • I can't let go of my HTC Desire!
Battery life is very poor now.
Any advice on where to get a replacement battery?

      • I've got a spare one from ebay a long time ago but I don't know how available they are any more :( such good phones I'll be keeping mine as a backup. Looking forward to the Nexus though!

Anyone who ordered one should check your order status on google play. I went to check if its shipped yet and saw this:

    Aug 29 »
    Google has canceled this purchase.
Comments from Google: You have exceeded the per user limit for an item in your order and the order has been canceled.

I only ordered 1 and never received an email. What the hell.

    • I checked my google play account and mine too is coming up as cancelled? I will have to call them Monday. There seems to be no charge to my bank account? Weird….

    • Received an email to say that it has been shipped. Expected delivery date - Monday.

    • Maybe that's their way of saying "Google has been ozbargained"? :)

      • so…I contacted google - stated there was an 'ordering error' and cleared my ordering so I was able to order another - this worked no probs and hope to receive this week sometime!

  • -2

Played with a coworkers one today. Both him and his wife's have cracked screens, even with cases. Also the screen seemed dull.

  • YAY Mine just got shipped ! Package seems to originate from TSUEN WAN,HK

    • Does it comes with 12 months local warranty?

      • yes of course

        • Where do you send it back for repair, LG, Google play Australia or they organize a courier pickup and delivery?

  • Ordered a 16Gb Nexus 4 for SWMBO earlier and after a little research it seems the Rearth Fusion cover is the go. Any suggestions on reputable eBay sellers for this item? Any other must have accessory?

    • +2

I bought one from these guys.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271163370688?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…

Think it is the actual Rearth people. Went to their website and postage was going go be $6.99. Found them on ebay and postage was $3.99

Note that all prices in USD though.

      • +1

Thanks for that amelyn. Much appreciated.
Now to look into Qi chargers which seem to be the other 'must have' for these phones.

  • Spoke with a sales person at Harvey Norman today. Apparently they have had 30 phones on back order since 21st August, which is around the time the Nexus 4 was on special at $399.

When I asked about price matching Google, he said it wouldn't be possible as they were loosing $10 on every phone. I will probably give them a ring in a week or two and see.

    • +1

Ehhh.. I wouldn't bother. I spoke to 2 stores, and they also had a heap of phones on back order as well. Knowing HN's internal systems, I'd say that the purchasing department have put a stop on the orders - not unusual.

Sales staff see low stock, put an order in, purchasing know more about the release cycle so they get the final call.

      • Knowing HN's internal systems, I'd say that the purchasing department have put a stop on the orders - not unusual.

Uh oh… Prior to the price drop I redeemed credit card points for Harvey Norman gift cards with the aim of buying the phone.

The Google Nexus 5 is much better and it's coming out on October.

    Price: US$299-$349

    http://img.ibtimes.com/www/data/images/full/2013/08/19/40035…

Google Nexus 5 will feature a 5-inch Full HD screen display; an eight-core processor clocked at 2.3 GHz paired with 3 GB of LPDDR3 RAM; 13 MP rear camera; 3300 mAh battery capacity and the latest Android OS.

Nexus 5 is also reported to offer 32 GB and 64 GB variants and will support 4G/LTE connectivity, which was missing in the Nexus 4.

    • +1

Lol, that's just a rumor. I doubt they would use Tegra 4 for the Nexus 5.

    • Well even if it will come out in October with those specs. Don't you forget that we are living in Australia and it means for whatever high end devices that come to here, we pay a little BONUS on top of normal price.

    • +2

The picture looks more like Sony Xperia Z

      • +1

Yea some just photoshopped stock jellybean on the xperia z and just put a list of what they want in the Nexus.

        • -2

Here is the full story about the Google Nexus 5.

          http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/502447/20130830/google-nexus-…

        • +1

That doesn't really say anything that other articles aren't saying.

Nexus 4 was announced in October, and as with many flagship phones their successor is released in around 12 months.

The specs listed seem like the rumored Note 3 specs except the screen size. In the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7(2013) Google used Qualcomm SOC, I'd be very suprised if they went with Tegra 4.

    • +1

i wish they would stop with the marketing gimmicks surrounding the multi-cores complex and instead focus on delivering more battery life

      • For marketing purposes, yes, the view on cores is 'more cores = more power', but disregarding the marketing spin - battery life and efficiency are the core (heh) objectives for multi-core SoC's.

Samsung's Exynos 5410 and 5420 are in a big.LITTLE configuration - the eight cores are never functioning all at the same time. The point is, that the low power efficient A7 set of cores will take over when the A15's aren't needed. The end goal is better battery life and efficiency (though not quite achieved to full potential, as there were issues with the 5410, and the cores can only switch in sets, not in a completely modular, core-by-core fashion)

Similarly, the 'eight core' X8 SoC (though they don't call it an SoC) used by Motorola isn't just 8 regular cores - it includes 2 low power cores for natural language processing and contextual computing. This is to offload continuous, background tasks from the CPU and thus be more efficient and save power.

TL;DR, yes there is a marketing spin aimed at the general consumer, but the greater number of cores is actually designed to increase the battery life and efficiency.

  • Just got mine shipped! Expected date of delivery; Monday. Does anyone know what happens if no one is at home to sign for the package? Do they try again the next day or do they leave it at the post office for you to collect?

    • you'll have to pick it up at a newsagent or post office

      • I just called them and asked. The guy said that they try again the next day. And if you prefer, you can also leave a note on your door saying where you would like them to leave the package. If you missed the second attempt you'd have to arrange to collect it at a Fedex location.

  • afaik you will need to give written authorisation for them to leave the package unattended. and after that they are not responsible. so i'd highly recommend that you receive the package or collect from there.

  • any recommendations on good cases off ebay (cheap cheap?)

  • ordered one cheers!!

    Need a good cover now

  • Just placed an order for Nexuss 4.

Contact Google store for shipping info, they said if no one is at home to sign off for the package, delivery guy will attempt to return another time. After 2-3 time unsuccessful reaching you, they will then return the phone back to Google store and you pretty much have to contact them to arrange something else. (not sure if they would include any fee after that).

    Cheers guys.

  • The 360° panoramas function is very tempted.

    • i have used it once just for the sake of it. Granted that I don't take a lot of pictures but still it takes more than enough effort

  • Does anyone know navigation use GPS only but not data consumption as my plan only got 100mb quarterly. Advice welcome.

    • .

    • There is a method to pre-download maps but I find it doesn't work well. Better to use one of the other navigation apps that are designed this way from the store (lots to choose from).

  • Got it delivered this morning!

    • ditto!!
      wooo hooo!!

  • Mine just arrived now, thanks to the OP for the bargain of 2013!

    • it was until this came up:

      Samsung 840 250GB SSD - £39.92 ea + £11.53 Shipping (~ $70 ea + $20 AUD) Amazon UK - OzBargain - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/115065

but expired and i missed :'(

      • Still working out whether that one is a price error (most likely it is).

  • ordered on 28th August , delivered Melbourne today 2nd September. Fantastic service, fantastic posting.

  • same here, not happy got charge $4 got international transaction fee by colesmastercard, should use 28 degree card

  • I do love it

    • It's so much faster than my galaxy tab 7

  • Thanks for this. Received my bright shiny new N4 16gb today, and I ordered it on Wednesday. Brother grabbed the 8 gig version, great for him as a uni student coming from the original Desire. (For those of you that remember that bad boy, it had a grand total of 512mb internal storage which also had to hold the OS.)

Won't work on Australian networks anyway.

  • I ordered on Thursday and got it around 3pm Monday. Pretty fast shipping.
