    You'd have to be bananas….

  • +9

    What phone do you have?

    Sam: GS4
    Sara: iPhone 5
Me: The THL W11 Monkey King

Looks alright but MTK6589T, wouldn't trust that.

    1. Kiss-ass? I will not want to buy a phone that has kissed-ass.
    2. This is not an iPhone (just kidding :-)).

I believe Nexus 4 is much better and cheaper

    • A custom rom on my N4 brings it on par with S4 benchies…

      • The last time I checked the Nexus 4 is only 14000 antutu benchmark. It's half the speed of S4. Can you show us your screen shot of 28000 score?

    • Nexus 4 has a lower resolution and smaller screen, and less on-board storage. Which might be super important to some people.

But yeah, an N4 would certainly be what I'd get over this Monkey King, especially with the recent N4 price drop. (I bought a N4 in Feb at the old price, which was still an awesome price at the time).

Although I hear the Monkey King is irrepressible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS_5BORSayc‎

      • Nexus 4 has a lower resolution and smaller screen, and less on-board storage.

True, but have you used a 1080p screen ? its a battery and cpu hog with no additional benefits…

On-board storage however is the only plus…, you also lose a 3G 900Mhz frequency, NFC, wireless charging, latest roms/kernels/updates a lot more going for the N4, including resale value…

Which might be super important to some people.

Not when we compare generic phones @ this price bracket(AUD 327.08~)…

        • True, but have you used a 1080p screen ? its a battery and cpu hog with no additional benefits…

          Wrong…. http://i.imgur.com/1MZnyps.png

^ My Xperia Z. And no, I don't use any form of power saving.

        • Considering your screen usage isn't up there as one of the bigger users of the battery, I'm going to have to assume you hardly touched your phone during those 2 days.

        • And? when I do use it it still lasts about 2 days before I charge it. Which is pretty good for any smart phone these days.

        • Wrong…

This is a THL phone with a cheap 2000mAh battery, if you own the Xperia Z then you should also know that it has a 3050mAh battery…

        • Except that you generalised 1080p screens… you can't pick and choose what you're generalising with.

        • you can't pick and choose what you're generalising with.

why? Isn't that what you just did?

Simply put, the more pixels then the more processing required, which in turn has a negative effect on battery life. Add to that the fact that some mobile CPUs are optimized to work at a particular resolution (especially the CPUs in Chinese phones), going above this results in lag. Perhaps taken into context, Elijah was talking specifically about Chinese phones with 1080 screens.

I personally don't see any benefits in 1080 screens on displays less than maybe 7".

Regarding your screenshot, a better portrayal of the effects of high res screen would be to take a screenshot that shows how often your screen is even on.

          http://i.imgur.com/XKY3tuc.png

          PS, Xperia Z has a 2330mah battery

        • How is it over that period that your screen has used less than 3%? It's not even listed..

        • PS, Xperia Z has a 2330mah battery

ur right CG !, I had the Xperia Z ultra bookmarked @ 3050mAh… pfff

Except that you generalised 1080p screens… you can't pick and choose what you're generalising with.

          ok ok you win…

        • @SuBw00FeR
well if your screen isn't on then you're not using your phone.. and you could literally have a nokia 3310 and achieve the same purpose (having a phone on standby to receive calls/texts). So you can't really look at this screenshot and determine how battery life would be in terms of "realistic usage"

2 days with usage before you charge it is indeed good though. How much screen on time would that be with? Rooted?

    • This independent review may be of interest to some: http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/08/thl-w11-monkey-king-13mp-…

  • Interestingly on the website - Camera : Dual Cameras, front camera 13.0MP, back camera 13.0MP.

Which one should we prefer - W11 or Aldi mobile (selling from Wednesday)?

    • +3

I'm extremely happy with my THL w8…. if that helps….

      • Was actually hoping there might be a good sale on the w8 now that this one has been released. I'm looking for a phone around $100 less to give to my mum to try and the w8 did sound pretty good.

        • happy with my thl w8 :) diddy kong :P

    • +1

Many agree that the Aldi mobile is overpriced, I would expect it to drop in price after a week or so.

  • +1

Spending more than $20 on anything from China is a test of nerves but I have a Chinese phone (UMI X1) and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Zero after-sales support though.

    • +3

Everything is from China these days. Are you teling me you get nervous every time you buy a washing machine, dryer, vacuum, tv etc etc just because its from China?

  • +1

13MP front camera? Shouldn't it be more like 1.3MP?

      • Yeah i'm not sure if GTA V really has anything to do with the camera on this phone…..

    • For the "Selfie Culture"

  • Also price is coming up as $327.08, does a coupon code need to be entered?

    • thats Aus $327.08 the $285 is US

    • Aussie dollar price shows $310.72 at checkout.

Aldi 5" phone is AU$299 - dual sim, local warranty! Specs aren't quite as good (1Gb, 8GB ROM), but I know which one I'd be buying if I were in the market for a five incher.

    http://www.bauhn.com.au/

    • None of the above? Lol.

    • +2

With respect, the Aldi phone's specs are nowhere near as good as the W11 - for example, in addition to the RAM and ROM specs you have already mentioned, compare the screen resolution and the cameras of the Bauhn to that of the THL.

    • +2

Seriously. Most can read the bauhn as a right piece of junk.
Only redeeming feature may be the dual slots. ips 2gb bud.

  • +2

The Chinese phone isn't cheap anymore. Add a bit more and get a Sony or Samsung instead.

  • Fixed battery - yes
