Refurbished Apple TV (3rd Gen) $79 from The Apple Store (RRP $109)

380

Saw this and thought it was a pretty good price ($30 off RRP). There are rumours of an imminent Apple TV hardware refresh so might be worth waiting a day before you commit to this one.

"…might be worth waiting a day before you commit to this one."

At that price there won't be any left in a day.

Anyone know if this thing supports Plex Media Center?

  • Great price, but I think that an Apple TV refresh will come along next month. Still definitely worth buying if you don't have an Apple TV yet

Yeah – even for a second TV or something

Just be wary that if you're getting this with a view of jail breaking it to put on XBMC or similar, that I don't think anyone has figured out how to jail break the 3rd gen yet.

    • Out of curiosity, what does that let you do?

        Run 1channel

Run many things just like jailbreaking iphone

Apple TV is good. It's the only apple product that isn't overpriced in my opinion. Set it up so it thinks it's in the US and there's lots more stuff to check out. The iTunes festival has been pretty good this year, some good acts appearing and easy to watch via apple tv.

Rather spend an extra $19 to get a brand new Apple TV for $98 from Big W rather than buy a refurbished Apple TV which is basically a repaired used Apple TV.

Why did he get negged? Genuinely curious. I had the exact same thought when I saw this. Admittedly I don't own/know much about the Apple TV. Since I have a bevy of idevices and non-idevices (*nix and windows machines) wouldn't mind getting something that is a good deal (and figure out "business case" later :P).

The refurb comes with exactly the same 1 year warranty as a new one so why wouldn't you save $19…

        • +4

Logic says there should be a higher chance of a used and refurbished unit breaking down before a new unit would. If someone wants to pay $19 extra for (in my experience) an instant money back/no hassle/over the counter/no questions asked returns policy from Big W, it's well worth considering.

Your logic might normally be ok.

Keep in mind this is solid state, so there are no moving parts. Also in many cases since Apple allows for returns for change of mind the chances are that these were never faulty. They may even be the units that were returned to BigW like you say.

Also this does include free shipping and as distinct from many refurbished products these are 12 months warranty.

BUT we each have different values ($19) that we feel comfortable with.

Seriously guys, if you have an Apple TV, you really should be signing in to it with a US iTunes account to get the most out of it (ie. Netflix). I've just signed up to the free Unblock-Us and Netflix trials, and I no longer care for jailbreaking to stream local files from my NAS! :-P

    How-to guide

    • Thanks for the guide muncan, much appreciated

    • Unotelly is much better than Unblock-Us and for the same price you get a vpn

    • Tunlr is free and hasn't failed me yet.

  • Far out so cheap just hope there will be jailbreak for aptv 3

You can already run Plex on it now with no jailbreak. Works quite well too.

      • Yeah I run it here as well, worked so well I sold my second PS3 in the study that I was using to play movies off my NAS and used the APpletv3 with PLex and Plexconnect. Looks awesome with all the movie information and IMDB info.

        • Sorry for newbie question. To run Plex and Plexconnect on the ATV3 do you just purchase it from iTunes via the ATV?

        • Plexconnect is installed on your pc or mac where your movies files sit. You also install Plex media server on the same machine. Then all you need to do is go to your AppleTV 3, select the trailers link and that redirects to your computer running plexconnect. Plex then lists your media files for streaming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h61NAgFAWQg

You can also buy offical Plex apps from the app store for your Iphone or ipad and stream your movie collection from your server/pc that has plex server on it.

    • Looks awesome. 100 bucks for Vita gaming on the big screen plus psp ps1 support. Also the added TV stuff I doubt I'd use

  • I would have got this, but today finally have firmware that has managed to make my piece of crap android stick work.

    • Hey Ronnie, what software did u get?

I'm using this firmware now, but decided to get an apple tv as well. I have no issues running netflix on my android stick finally though. Still I think the apple tv is probably a better more reliable solution and can't really go wrong at this price. :)

        • Thanks for that !
