  • I purchased a laptop at the end of the financial year and it was mentioned as a particular model number through officeworks compared to the number on the actual box. Thought it might void cashback.

Just got the cash back this week, so they are usually fairly good about it.

    Just a tip.

  • +7

It was $559 only few days ago
Very good price for a 4th Gen i5

  • Very tempted.

Looking for a lappy for the kids, and while I'm guessing this will be more than adequate, what are the week points of this model?

    • +1

Weak only in absolute terms, not at this very low price- no ssd.

    • +3

The whole thing is a bit of a weakpoint. The processor's an i5, but only dual core with hyperthreading (as are all laptop i5s), and that's at a pretty damn low base clock speed too. The hard drive is pretty conservative on size, the RAM is nothing great but even with "good" stuff you wouldn't notice the difference. Being intergrated graphics, that's also pretty poor. Really it all just pretty well matched low end gear, so pretty appropriate for the price range. I'm pretty sure that "U" in the CPU model might have something to do with being a low power model too.

So if it's just for the kids to jump on facebook, do assignments and such, it's probably fine. If they are going to play various games from the last ~4 years, I'd say look for something else.

      • Thanks - All good info. Will just be a learning / school laptop that I'll grab from time to time when the home PC and iPad are being used. Should do the trick. :)

  • +6

the only thing it is lack of is a FHD screen.

    • +17

+1 for the deal just to piss off LamEovo … yes LamEovo rep, i know your watching this somewhere

    • There might be a fire sale on FHD screens at Lameovo?

  • That is a great price, thanks OP
How is the screen on these Acer entry level laptops? Not too bad viewing angles?

  • ugh, the models i'm interested in aren't avilable in australia. gg acer.

  • I know next to nothing about laptop hardware, how is this for the price? I will use it mostly for web browsing and email and maybe watching the odd video here and there. No gaming or anything like that.

    • +2

This is a good choice then.

    • it's not 1080p so if you have HD movies it won't be great, otherwise it should be fine.

    • +1

dq, consider a tablet for those tasks. Cheaper and often more convenient.

  • Dicksmith website says it comes with FHD touchscreen…can someone plz confirm?

"The Aspire V5 Series puts inspiring performance in a thin and light form. The choice of up to four suave colours adds to the charm. A Full HD1 touchscreen breathes life into your entertainment and gives you hands-on control, while four built-in speakers make your enjoyment all the more sweet with great sound."

    • +1

No, it doesn't, I checked in store

  • Should we take an extra 20% off? The $499 doesn't show the 20% off as for the other Acer laptops.
And the 20% off Acer shows "Excludes XC7863" and the V5-573's reference is XC7864, so should apply… will go to the closest DS and try get the 20% off…

    • I called brisbane dse and he said its the excluded one, but i'm sure its not. shrug

    • +2

      Just ordered and picked up
Sales guys said that 20% was already applied and there was an extra discount

It's a pretty good lappy for the price really, nice looking, very thin and not too heavy… screen is not too bad, viewing angles are ok for the main user

Very good value for money for an i5 Haswell

  • +1

It's good deal. We could see that ACER laptops are dominating OZbargains…. ????

    • because they are usually the cheapest

  • +1

I'd like to run a a double blind test to see if you connoisseurs can tell the difference watching an HD movie and a non HD movie on a 15.6" screen.

    • +2

While I understand your point, I do believe there is a noticeable difference between 1333x768 and 1920x1080 on a laptop screen. I'd definitely be able to tell the difference, having two laptops with both resolutions. It's only when you get to 1080p vs 'Retina' displays on a 5' phone where the lines start to blur.

    • +11

"Blind test". I'm guessing they won't.

      • +2

I believe I can tell the difference even on 5" screens. I won't argue that pixels are no longer discernable but I think it still makes a difference.

However I have done no double blind or even blind tests to confirm this and I'm a big believer in the brains ability to fool itself unlike a lot of "connoisseurs" who link their ego to their perception so this is largely a moot point ;)

  • +3

Ok, just bagged one. After the cash back and with staff discount (another $25 off) I'll have this in my hot little hands for under $400. :D

    Suck it Lenovo.

    • can you confirm it has fhd screen? and also is 20% apply as the price of $499 does not showing it has 20% off

      • $79 off this model by Acer cashback.

      • +2

Not sure on the screen sorry. The price was $499, less staff discount, so $474.06. After the $79 cashback it will work out to be $395.06 - which I think is a pretty good price.

        • -3

          staff/wish card 5% = 499 x 5%= 24.95
          DSE 20% discount = 499 x 20%= 99.80
          acer $79 discount = 79.00

          Total discount = 24.95 +99.80 +79= 202.95
          List price = 499
          You pay = 499-202.95= $296.05

          am I correct, Dick?

        • +1

No. the 20% doesn't apply to this model.

        • -2

          Dick advertise:Excludes ACER Aspire E1-522 15.6" Notebook, XC7863

          OP listed
          Model #: V5-573-54204G50amm
          Catalogue #: XC7864

if it doesn't apply, either price error or false advertising

        • +2

It also states prices as advertised, ie it already has the 20% off

    • +1

      well done mate

  • -1

I can tell the difference on my phone's 4 inch let alone a 15 inch laptop screen.

  • +1

DSE wins my award for the most anexoric specs- on everything they sell- by the length of the straight.

  • What I don't understand is these Haswell 15W TDP processors which in my tech illiterate brain would suggest very low heat in fact in every review I can find run hot.

Although the one Amazon reviewer of this model says it runs cool.
    Better specs there:

    http://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-V5-573-9837-15-6-inch-Lapt…

Although not exactly the same model code as DSE- V5-573-54204G50amm

  • Haven't received my Acer Iconia cashback yet. Just sayin'.

    • +1

Acer cashback tend to take a while. But you will get it in the end.

    • second!!

  • -4

    Probably a price error.

  • +14

In for a cancellation email … am addicted to those after being Kogan'd, Amazon'd, Lenovo'd

Prepare to get Dick'd next lol

    • Been there, done that. Many times infact.

    • None available at stores near me. As per usual!

    • Never ordered anything online from Dick's but believe me they pull bargain prices instore pretty goddam fast and make various claims amounting to why the price isn't what they posted.

    • +1

      Don't you mean D'seased?

    • Don't forget getting Gerry'd (altho' Norman'd sounds better)

    • Without a doubt dick will come faster , at announcing the error hahahahah (;

      • Without a doubt dick will come faster

        And in One DIRECTION

  • I got the $499 Acer Aspire V5 Touchscreen from MSY for the missus and she's extremely happy with it. The cashback took ages to arrive - over 6 weeks I think. But at least it arrived.

Would have totally bought this one for myself if I had less self control.

In other news Lenovo has also pissed me off. I miss the brick ThinkPad days of yore.

  • +1

    NO ODD NO FHD

  • "A Full HD1 touchscreen"

    Is this correct?

    • +1

that is not correct. I tested them at the shop.

      • Thanks for you input!!

If it was, would have been instant buy.

      • Anything else you can share with us breatthesystem?

Personally, i don't need touchscreen or terribly high specs. It's just for browsing and typing really.

How was the keyboard for typing?

        • +1

Keyboard and touchpad are really good… Macbook style… like most laptops/ultrabooks nowadays… honnestly, surprised by the quality of it given this is an entry level model

        • Thanks.

        • +2

At that price, you probably can't find anything close in terms of specs.
It's worth the money if you're looking for one or thinking of upgrading.
The cashback deal from Acer is on till next year if you want to wait.

As for the notebook, keyboard and touchpad can take awhile to get used to.
You could do a click-and-collect, then test it in-store and decide.
Design is nice, champagne gold colour might not be for everyone, very slim, less than 1 inch thick.

          It's no macbook but at $420, it's a deal.
Claims to have "Dolby Home theatre" 4 speakers at the bottom not sure what that means. Didn't test that.

        • Sound overall is not bad at all, no saturation and quite crisp, basses are average as on all slim laptops

        • For the speakers, looking underneath it has a speaker in each corner. So I'm assuming it's meant to have slightly better sound quality.

Only issue I can see is that the whole thing will have to be disassembled to put in an SSD

  • I have never played with laptops before.

    Is it relatively easy to:
    a)add more ram?
    b)add/swap for a sdd?

    • Yes, yes
Just watch a YouTube video to have general idea

  • +5

    Let's play scrabble…
    LENOVO -> NOLOVE
    ACER -> CARE

    The choice is obvious??

    • Not sure if Care is the right word to use for acer, they don't have the best rep for built quality and reliability, but at least the price will be honoured :P

      • +3

Its more a case of you having to take personal CARE for it :P

    • +1

man, just for that, acer should let you claim CASHBACK twice.

    • +3

more like RACE to the bottom

  • This is a good deal for haswell laptop.

For those who can't tell the difference when using a FHD (1920x1080) vs non-FHD (1366x768) screen it'll be good for you.

Otherwise, for most others - better to wait for a FHD screen.

    • +1

I can tell the difference but the screen and build quality are good enough for the price

      • the point is not "screen is good enough for the price", but many of us want a FHD. the difference between a FHDa and a non-FHD is huge to most of us.

      • +1

I think it's not so much FHD versus HD… screen quality also matter, like IPS or not… the Macbook Air for example, while not full HD, have very good screen.

This Acer model is good value, but usually, Acer entry level have pretty bad screen, ie. poor viewing angles… this one is less than average, viewing angles are poor, I've seen much better HD screens… that could be the main deal breaker in my opinion

        • +1

it is true about the quality of the screen. however, i would like a fhd of "poor quality" rather than a hd of "good quality".

MBA looks good, but not as good as a 13" retina MBP.

but if someone doesnt care much about the screen resolution, this acer is quite good for its price. its battery life is awesome.

        • I guess, people have different opinions… I'd better have a good HD screen rather than a poor FHD… though, this Acer as a poor HD screen… so problem solved ;)
You can't have everything for that price :)

  • When I went into DSE last week, they were still accepting woolies Wish cards. Yes I know they are no longer a part of the woolworths group.

So stack an extra 5% off this deal if you have a source of wish cards. In SA, the RAA does them.

  • +2

Whats the battery life on these? Tempting for a Haswell!

    Can the RAM be upgraded?

    • -4

if you ever clicked the link i posted above, you should ve already known the answer.

      • -1

Aside from the fact you're link above was wrong, you've linked a better model.

I can't find anything on battery life.
As for upgrade-able RAM, I'm not positive. The specs at Dick Smith say a single slot of 4GB, however I'm not sure how easy it would be to upgrade the RAM because you would have to take off the whole bottom of the laptop to get to it (there's no easy-access cover for either the RAM or the HDD)

    • The only manual I can find on the hopeless Acer 'support' site (http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/drivers), is for the touch-screen V5-573 model. It makes no mention of RAM expansion capability, so I assume that PCB-soldered RAM is used.

  • +1

    I bought this yesterday.

Sensational looking thing, it's actually a bit gold in colour.

Super quick, still had 3 at Chatswood Chase last night

  • good price thanks op

  • +8

After being Lenovoed & koganed i REALLY don't want to be dicked!

    • +2

You won't this time. I just received my AAE Tracking number from Dick Smith.
Some members above already got them in store too.

    • I have the most faith in Dick (among the electronics retails)

      • Yeah, Dick is very good with their prices. Haven't been dicked yet :)

    • +1

Yes after recent experiences, I just purchased one the traditional way (walked in, paid, and left with the goods). Went to the George St store they still had a few left

      $499 - $79 - $45.36 (TRS) = $374.64

Wish the store had payWave as well :( could have done 5 "waves" and saved another $24.95, but still collected some points so not all is lost

      Thanks OP for finding this

      • TRS?

        • +1

          Tourist Refund Scheme

        • It's open to both tourist and Australian residents so nothing dodgy here

There are some limitations on your way back into Australia but nothing too drastic

          http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp

        • Nm

        • Interesting read…
So you must physically carry the goods to be claimed on your possession when you leave Australia and transport them out of the country with all the necessary documentation…OK, that's reasonable.

"If the goods are to be brought back into Australia, please be aware that they may be subject to GST." … AHA!

I would imagine you would have a hard time trying to hide the goods on the return? So technically, this is abuse of the TRS scheme because the whole point of it is for the goods to leave the country and stay out(i.e. not come back with you!), hence why you get the GST rebate. Where is the great big loophole I'm not seeing?

        • …"Normal passenger concessions apply and include any items for which a TRS claim has been approved. If the value of those goods together with overseas purchases exceeds the passenger concession, the goods must be declared to Customs on your return to Australia."

Normal passenger concessions are defined below as $900 and explicitly includes goods that have been claimed under TRS. So this is recognised as a legal and legitimate practice as long as the goods you bring back in do not exceed $900 in value, including the price of the laptop.

          http://www.customs.gov.au/faq/PaxConcessions.asp

        • BTW, I don't think this is a loophole if your mean that it's a way of avoiding GST on something that should be taxed. I think it's a way of encouraging Australian travellers to spend local instead of otherwise spending their $900 concession abroad.

    Good deal.

There is also potential to get the V5-571 for $376.05 after $79 cashback, just need to verify model numbers.
