  • Awesome camera. Got it for 700 bucks last year from graysonline with 18-55 and 55-200 mm lens.
This one looks like the 16mm and 18-55 mm one. Good, but not great price.

  • Can anyone comment on the differences between the nex-5N and the nex-5RB? The only difference i can see is one has wireless. But the RB twin lens kit is a couple hundred more than the N. So im not sure if the RB is meant to be a better camera or not.

The NEX-5R (the B means it is black) has better manual control with the addition of the control dial on the top. It is also gifted with an updated sensor/processor and software (not a huge difference).

The NEX-5R is a newer and better camera in my opinion. Much better value if you dont need the lenses

      • Thanks for the info aim54x. Looks like I might go for the R then, and try and buy some lenses separate.

        • If you are buying body only check ebay. Some people break up kits and sell body only on there.Even cheaper than Hardley Normal prices.

      • The 5R is a better camera. I have the 5N and played with the 5R and 6 at a Sony Masterclass session.

FWIW, the 5R has been replaced by the 5T.

You can buy a powerzoom kit lens for maybe $200-$250 off ebay. If you're new to photography and don't have steady hands, lenses with OSS are better.

        I woulnd't recommend getting the old Nex 5 - it's about 2-3 years old.

        ymmv.

    • Wireless/Apps are meh. The extra control dial and sensor that does hybrid focus is what you get R for. For these to be of real benefits depends on if you are point&shooter (extra control dial & focus won't matter as much), however if you are learning manual modes and playing with photography in general, then you want R.

  • Some Harvey Norman have the Nikon 1 J1 body + twin lenses kit on sale for $398 down from $888.

Here's the comparo with between the two. Sony is still in front.

      I don't consider J1 as comparable to NEX-5N/5R. J1 are more like NEX-3 (C3, F3) equivalent…

That J1 is a bargain in it's own right, but don't compare it to 5N/5R.

Just want ppl to not get the impression that they are comparable in performance.

the nex 5R body only is $380 @ harvernorman . cheaper than ebay

    • Pick up the sigma 19 + 30 and you'll have a pretty good kit.

Cannot recommend the NEX cameras more highly. I have owned a NEX-5 and loved it, currently own a NEX-7 and love it. Other companies certainly have caught up in the MILC market in the last couple of years, but I still feel that the NEX cameras are the best of the bunch.

I'm selling my E-Mount (NEX) Tamron 18-200mm lens as well if anyone is interested in a good deal on a versatile lens.

  • Do these do 4K video like the Nikon V1? It seems it can do 1-second clips at 30fps or 0.5-second clips at 60fps. Is this a big deal? Or something that more cameras will come out with very quickly?

  • Thanks for sharing OP
