  • Strange about these forms people are asked to fill. I remember a year or so ago, Big W asked for ID, driver's licence etc.

Since then I've just bought them from Dick Smith, no questions, but maybe if I purchased online, my "account" is sufficient?

Can't remember the last time I bought any at a walk-in store, so not sure if they would require ID now. I thought as you needed some form of ID when activating them, ID at time of purchase was irrelevant?

    • I bought one from Woolworths without needing to provide personal details, although I voluntarily provided my everyday rewards card which they scanned.

      • is the deal on at woolworths as well?

  • I just bought all 7 left at the St Kilda Road store… Not sure what I'm going to do with them exactly. Ozbargained!

But nobody asked for any ID or to sign any forms. I literally just took them off the shelf, Paypassed and was out the door within 45 seconds.

  • Up until a few months ago I was able to get Telstra Live Chat to change my existing SIM offer to Long Life and then transfer the full $30 from a $30 SIM Starter Kit to my SIM as a recharge all in one operation, taking about 15 minutes total.

Recently I tried to do the same thing only to be told that it was not possible.

Anyone know of any tricks to get that recharge method to work?

I only use the phone occasionally and then primarily for SMS, so being able to get 6 months longevity for $10 repeatedly was great. I don't see why Telstra make it so difficult to get a long expiry with little credit, apart from their greed, as it forces customers to use loopholes to get the service they want.

    • if your just using the phone for sms and calls and not data I suggest you look at Aldi mobile. $5 for the sim and recharges at 15-30$ recharges last a whole year and calls and txt are only 12c a min or 12c each. Datas 5c a megabyte and kinda sucks but if you don't use data that prepaid is for you. Also its built on the telstra network so if you like what you have now Reception wise you'll probably like aldi. But yes I agree it's certainly a pain for people who don't want to be tied to a conventional recurring plan or to barely do anything for cheap.

      • +1

There's no point going to aldi, even assuming their ToS doesn't change again.

Doing longlife + simplicity your $30 also buys your 6 months expiry and 15c calls/SMSs. I happily pay the extra 3c for access to the full telstra network.

Even better, as suggested above put your new SIM in a second phone and do encore, giving you heaps of calls that month, and transfer virtually all the $ to your simplicity account for later on.

Coupled with the $10-$15 offers on the starter packs, you are much better off on telstra prepaid.

If you are really tight you can try an app called payback on the android store which alleges to transfer your android credit back into money.

        • I'll have to take a look into that but the aldi plans are pretty great for anyone who doesn't want to "play the game"

      • Unfortunately no Aldi in W.A. :-(

Otherwise a $20 recharge with 365 day expiry would be perfect.

        • Does the coverage map cover you?
          http://telcoantennas.com.au/site/aldi-mobile-coverage-maps
If so and I can buy the sim without giving out ID and you'll pay for it $5 and however much it costs to ship to you I'll buy/ship one to you. Also might be a while as they haven't had any in stock where I live for the longest time. I was able to pick one up at an aldi near Sydney on a recent trip though and without handing any ID over I was shocked! I don't know if ID's required for aldi and don't see how they could enforce it. They don't have the space or time for people to fill out the forms for it really.

        • Thanks for the offer, but Aldi do seem to have an online purchase link where they say proof of ID may need to be shown, so possibly they post for online orders: I'll try that avenue first.

Damn, they are out of stock online.

I'll contact them to see what the online purchase story is interstate: I seem to be in the coverage area.

Whilst investigating this issue, I discovered that a month ago Kogan mobile was forced to close due to the cancellation of a wholesale contract with Telstra. Although at the time it was mentioned that Aldimobile's contract was secure, I am wondering whether it might be the next casualty and the non-availability of SIMs online is the first indication that stocks are being allowed to dry up before closure. I wouldn't put it past Telstra to force out the cheaper 3rd party resellers from the market progressively.

  • so these all have 3gb of data? i was going to get a few of the $15 ones recently from 7eleven but i couldn't find out if they definitely had 3gb… need some data to get me through to my new phone line being hooked up (29/11!! :()

    • 3GB on iPad plans or 700MB for other tablets with 30 days expiry.

  • Can I take advantage of this if I want to keep my old number from another carrier?

  • Can I buy riot points in league of legends with this if I pay through mobile payments

  • Just wondering if i activate it as a 3gb ipad plan - i can still use it on a iphone/ipad as a wireless hotspot and not get charged differently?

    • Yes you can. I use mine as a hotspot sometimes and it just uses the data from the plan.

  • Can I buy 12 packs of this and transfer all credit to one service number?

    • Sorry found the answer in Page1. Please delete.

  • Can you have unlimited Telstra sim cards registered under the same name?

I remember reading the original uploaded scan and it said there's a limit of 5?

    • Limit of 5 doesn't limit anything other than the fact you'll need to give more ID over if you have more then 5 registered in your name. No one really checks that box or cares really though.

      • I sure hope so - I've activated about 7 of these in the last month. And I've got about 7 more on the way. Is there really some sort of law against it? I don't want to be on any sort of 'list' for potential suspects or anything :( I literally activate it, and once I get the notification, use the $30 in google play, and then never touch the sim card again.

Is there somewhere you can go to cancel the service or delete your name from that number? Happy to do that if that means I don't get questioned at one point in the future "Why do you own 50 prepaid services". What's the most any of you have (activated) right now?

        • If I had to guess I'd say I have at least 7 active but they become inactive after 6 months non use I think. You can call or use chat support to cancel them too.

        • Did you register them under your real name or did you make up stuff since you won't be touching them anyway?

  • don't forget that you can price-beat/match at officeworks), good guys, big w, harvey norman, dick smith

  • The telstra account that I use to pay my google music all access is almost out of credit. Is it possible to change the payment method with google by getting a new telstra sim? Or am I better off just transferring credit via me2u?

    • you can use as many prepaid sims with google (for apps) as you want no issue. I'm not sure about using it for Google music all access but I've noticed that when I add bill telstra it shows up in google wallet as a payment option (when I tried to purchase Humble bundle) wouldn't put the sale through though when I tried to pay for HB with it though. So if your paying for all access through the play store on your phone I don't think it'll be an issue.

  • Apologies. I need to ask one more question. Say I activate an iPad micro-SIM starter kit (cut it down to nano size and plug it into an iPad mini) which has $30 credit that gives me 3GB of data. Say I don't want to keep cutting SIMs. Can I activate a second iPad starter kit, and then use creditMe2U to transfer up to $29.25 (as three separate transactions of $10 each with a cost of 25c per transaction) to my original iPad micro-SIM?

And with this approach the only catch is that the transferred credit expires in 14 days, not 30?

  • I've been searching high and low for an answer to this, but maybe someone here will know:

Could you register one of these SIMS and transfer the value to a post-paid Telstra (using that Me2u thing) and THEN use it to purchase a Data Pack on the post-paid account??

  • Can you use the Pink (Multi Fit Starter) or Orange (UNIVERSAL STARTER KIT) starter packs, for the iPad to get 3gigs of data?

    • I think you need to call up for that. Also, I think they got rid of the multi-fit starter kit.

      • Ohhh really? need to call up… hmmm

i went shopping today, and bought all the "ipad micro sim 3gb" ones that i found.

the stores still had plenty of the pink and orange ones. i wasn't prepared to buy those, unless i was certain that i could use them for my ipad as 3gb of data. ( same as the white packs )

  • Whats your take on this;
How to get a $10/month plan with loads of calls and data and KEEP THE SAME PHONE NUMBER.

step 1. buy loads of teltra 10$ for $30 recharge starter kits
step 2. Buy loads of Voda $10 for $30 recharge starter kits
step 3 once the month ends port the number across to the other sim
    and repeat every month.

*do u guys think this will work or would they become suss as to why you keep porting in and out.
*also how long can porting take? i heard 5 hours and i heard some people say 5 days.

    • yeah the porting might be an issue with this plan but other than that would work.

    • +2

      @Frutter

*also how long can porting take? i heard 5 hours and i heard some people say 5 days.

More like 5 minutes…give it a go (longest ports i get are from resellers/virgin/aldi/amaysim etc)
porting for me between say Optus and Telstra is literally 5 mins (but i already have prepaid broadband with both so maybe checking to see who i am (I.D) is quicker ?

      • +1

A few months ago i ported a virgin number to telstra , it took about 3 minutes BUT…

Now Virgin keeps sending me txts offering special deals if i recharge the number

And i can still sign in to my ex virgin account on the net.

        from my account page::

        "
        Summary

To avoid having your service cancelled, recharge within 180 days of your credit expiring.
        Recharge Setup auto recharge"

        Ya gotta be jokin…

        • +1

Or just transfer $1 each 14 days from another prepaid to keep the number alive. Bounce the dollar between both numbers to keep them active. Cheaper than doing a $30 recharge every 30 days.

    • I think the main risk here is porting isn't a perfect process.
I once ported to VirginMobile and Virgin took over 4 months and required the ombudsman to encourage them to complete the port leaving the phone directing roughly half the calls (optus network and voda network) to one sim and the other half (telstra) to the other sim which forced me to hold both accounts open and carry two phones around for 4 months. Costly and not much fun.

On the flip side this is telstra and voda who are 1000 times better than virgin so maybe not an issue.. Would be good to get feedback on how reliable they are with porting on these types of sims.

  • Alright new plan of attack; need to know if this will work and if there are any flaws in this method. [im with vodafone at the moment and iphone 4s contract is ending in 3 days.]

    MEthod:

    1. Buy a couple of $10 telstra starter kits (microsim starter pack)
    2. port voda number into telstra sim card
    3. select longlife plan
    4. change to simplicity plan for cheaper rates and to maintain 180 day expiry as those have suggested above
    5. transfer credit from other recharge starter kits into longlife or should i say(now simplicity plan) via creditme2u or online chat.
    6. once 180 days end i shall port my number into another telstra sim card essentially repeating steps 2 to 6

by the way i will be buying data packs each month with my recharge credits, are data packs charged per kb? it say PAYG data is 10c/mb charged per mb (what about data packs???)

  • Okay so I've bought about 20 of these now and have all activated it under my name. Someone please tell me that I'm not going to get into trouble or anything. :S

    • What are you doing with 20 SIM's at one time ?
      You're a bookie ?

      • Perhaps ranma has 10 phones and 10 tablets.

        • +1

sometimes the only reason one needs on here is, cos i can

        • Lol

    • It's not so much the sims, but the google play credit. :S I activate, I use the google credit immediately, and then leave it

  • Is it possible to port from Telstra prepaid to Telstra prepaid?
