  • Would this build be alright to fit in a R9 280x or GTX 780? Not too familiar with motherboards

      probably need a bigger PSU

      • -1

        Yes, the PSU is garbage

I don't think they're garbage at all. The bundled ones are actually fine for basic PC's (and way better than Shaw PSU's).

I've got a couple of Thermaltake V3's at home, one's powering an older Core2Duo E8400 with a 6770 graphics card, and the other is powering a Pentium G860 (one of the sandy bridge dual cores) with a 6850 graphics card - both have been running for aaaaages now.

I wouldn't put a high powered graphics card (i.e. R9 280x or GTX 780) with them, sure, but they are definitely fine for mid-range type stuff. Just don't put anything more powerful as then you'll definitely start overloading the PSU (it's got a bad rail setup and splits the load poorly across the rails, meaning it's easy to overload them).

  • Always wondered, but never asked, what is the main difference between SSD and HDD? From what I've perused, it's basically that SSD is a newer technology that reads quieter and more quickly. But given that you get 1TB HDD for mayb equivalent 120GB SSD, why is it worth it? Or do you put things that take longer to read on the SSD, and everything else on the HDD

    • You install the operating system on the SSD and whatever else you can fit. It runs everything extremely faster, and it is recommended to buy an SSD as well as HDD if you can afford it. 120GB SSD with 1TB HDD is perfect. I don't own one, but going to put one in my next build due to all the positive reviews of the SSD

    • Anything that takes time to open (games, OS, programs) will open near-instantly on an SSD; everything else (documents, music, movies) goes on your normal HDD.

Just YouTube 'SSD vs HDD' and watch one of the many videos demonstrating the speed difference

Google is your friend. In Summary the read/write of the SSD smashes the HDD. You can cold boot a machine in seconds instead of minutes. You use it for all you operating system and core programs, its easily the most cost effective way to improve the overall performance of your machine. A must have in any machine these days. Keep your HDDs for storage.

    • On top of the high speeds, reduced heat, solid components (so they can be bumped/turned upside down), I also use them for document storage because of the slower degeneration when they start to fail. That last isn't as important these days because thumb drives are getting larger capacities.

Is it worth it? I thought so, and I paid $1200 for my first 68GB many years ago.

    • SSD: Solid State Drive - It's just a chip, doesn't really have any moving parts
HDD: Hard Disk Drive - Mechanical drive, information is stored on magnetic platters that spin around

Logically, anything with moving parts has a higher chance to screw up compared to something that doesn't have any moving parts.

SSDs are also much faster, 200MB/s minimum, goes up to 500MB/s burst (from memory?)
Fast HDDs can transfer up to 60MB/s (7200RPM + USB 3.0), probably can go a little bit faster with the 10000RPM velociraptors, but most HDDs are at 5400RPM, so it's around 30MB/s-45MB/s max

    CPU: Intel Core i5 4670 $245.00 (MSY)
    MB : Asus H87-Pro $130.00 (MSY)
    RAM: 8GB Crucial 1600MHZ $100~ (MSY)
    SSD: 120GB Kingston $99.00 (MSY)
HDD: 1TB Seagate SATA3 (Website says WD 1TB Caviar Blue) $66.00 (MSY)
ODD: Samsung DVD Writer $18.00 (MSY)
CASE: Thermaltake Versa I Mid Tower case with 500W PSU $79.00 (PCCG)

    TOTAL = $737 + ~$100 Assembly fee
So savings of up to $200, pretty decent

  • How many USB3 ports does this computer have?, how many at the front?, thanks

    • +1

1 USB 3.0 on the front of the case, and 2 on the back

      • How many USB3 is it capable of handling, do you know?

        • +1

mobo has 4 in the back and 2 headders (case only has 1 usb 3 in the front).

          So 5 all up.

edit: If you meant how many in total, then as much usb3 cards you can humanly fit on the pcie slots.

    FYI
I have a similar case same brand and the top allows a lot of dust to come into the system I recommend people to get a filter or some kind of breathable material to block the dust. It saves you the headache of removing dust regularly.

    • thanks, looking at the picture, there are lots of holes. I guess it's great for heat dissipation.

      • +1

The bloke who designed the case used to work in a swiss cheese factory ;)

    • +1

mount the fans so they blow out the top and that will help reduce the dust.

  • Is this PSU enough to power a AMD 7970 graphics card?

    • Perhaps, but you'd be taking a risk

    • +1

please don't risk your 7970 card on this PSU. Trust me. I have to RMA my PSU (something similar to this) due to overheating with my 7970 drawing lots of power.

    • Not sure about this brand, but I'd say 500w is enough power (given you have a trusted brand like seasonic/antec/corsair). Lets your psu sit nice and high on it's efficiency curve.

  • How much does it cost to upgrade the PSU? for example to 600W?

Everything looks good except for the PSU

  • I wouldn't trust the PSU that comes with this case.
    Refer to this thread:
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2103642

The PC specs above will match with well with an AMD Radeon HD7950 or AMD Radeon HD7970.
A PSU with similar specs to the below are recommended:
Antec Neo Eco 520C Bronze $79
Antec Neo Eco 620C Bronze $89

    • It's fine, I'm running two of these cases and have been running them for ages. See earlier in this thread for details. I wouldn't run a high powered machine with them of course, but for basic PC's with mid-range graphics cards (i.e. the 6770 and 6850 my kids computers have), they're fine. Think of them more as basic 450W PSU's (not 500W, despite the label!)
