        • Depends on the bandwidth requirements of your DAC. If your two devices can share 480Mbit/s then you are fine.

  • the price is really good considering the spec, if it could only run dual boot with android would be great buy.

  • +1

    Help please

I haven't bought a tablet yet. I don't really need one. Not sure if I'd use one. I'm happy with my smartphone for basic mobile internet / functionality. I have a laptop setup which works perfectly fine.

I was thinking I'd buy a tablet once they were cheap and Windows based so that I could use for useless entertainment and for business use whenever I need to - basic MS Office and also a couple of windows business software packages.

    $223 seems mega cheap.

Should I scoop this up, or is this quite flawed and best avoided, and better to wait for the better Surfaces to drop in price?

    • +2

You would have to wait another year or so for new surfaces to drop. There's always pro and cons of every device. Some ppl will want more than they're willing to pay. So for basic use this will do just fine and for the price, you cant go wrong. Also, the surface has good build quality.

    • +3

This is a Surface RT so it can't run common Windows business software packages.

It has Office pre-installed and you can only add/install Metro (basically tablet-type app) from Windows Store.

I was thinking I'd buy a tablet once they were cheap and Windows based so that I could use for useless entertainment and for business use whenever I need to - basic MS Office and also a couple of windows business software packages.

      • Thanks for that.

Yeah I think it won't run a software package that I use all the time, so I suppose I'd be better off waiting for full Windows 8 tablets to drop in price. Thanks for that.

        • You'll be waiting a while. The current Surface Pro 2 is hovering around 1k, whereas the older Surface Pro is around $700. All depending on your needs/budget, but don't expect them to get TOO cheap too soon.

The original one might drop in price even more so, but I can't see the Pro 2 going much lower (at least for another year).

        • +1

There are cheap full Windows tablets, but frankly, unless you're going to go for the high end I don't see the point over your existing laptop.

Windows RT is great for tablet use, and for MS Office, but it's not really intended for business use (since you can't install desktop software).

        • +1

a netbook, is what you need

      • and it's last year's model

  • +3

i also saw surface pro for $500 odd at JB. better buy imo if you wanted a real laplet

    • +2

Where? Can't find it on their site. Link please.

      • +1

i saw some yesterday at blacktown jbhifi. i couldn't find it on their catalogue or online either so it must be store-specific clearance lines

    • Which store? The old gen-1 surface pro 64gb were around $700.
      $500 is a very good price for gen3 i5.

I saw the Surface 2 (ARM) for around $526 at JB Hifi

  • if you know what you want to use and it's gotta be sooner, then get this. It's real cheap deal. I love to see this, and almost can be an impulse buy. But i have no use for windows personally unfortunately…..even e-tax uses Mac…

      Posted twice already.

  • I'm a bit torn about whether to get this for my folks or go the Nexus 10

For them though I think the Nexus is better:
    - Much nicer screen for viewing photos
    - Better support for google-centric work flow i.e picasa, gmail, apps which they use
    - They don't need office on the tablet
    - More apps and as far as I can see, more good apps

    • +2

imo, buy what will solve your daily needs. I prefer the surface RT over an android tablet because of Outlook (I have around 10 emails I need to manage) and the rest of office. However, I have an android phone because of certain apps I will need on the road. I also have an ipod classic to hold my flacs.

    • +2

Speaking from experience: my folks couldn't deal with the confusion of Andriod. Far too complicated for them if they ever opened the 'settings' app they'd probably have a heart attack. They've gotten used to Windows over the past 10 years, so I had to switch them to a Surface RT and they are much happier with it.

    • +1
      • More apps and as far as I can see, more good apps

I wouldn't agree with the 2nd part of this. On my Android tablet the inconsistency of the apps is a real pain. Some apps take up 1/4 of the screen in the top corner; some stretch and look really pixellated; many apps simply don't work on some devices. This is due to the fact that the Android platform is not consistent (e.g. different screen sizes and hardware capability).

Your other points seem to point to Android being the better choice, but if I were you I'd check the apps they need, and make sure they are comfortable with the less user-friendly ways of Android - it can be a pain, whereas Windows is consistent and simple.

  • I think this is a steal!!!
My wife uses her Surface RT every day instead of a PC

  • Has someone complained about the low res screen yet?.. Usually that's the first thing most people will complain about on these cheap tabs. The tegra 3 now is really showing its age, I guess that's one reason why these are so cheap. I suppose it comes down to what you want to use it for. At this price its definitely tempting.

    • +3

Firstly it's not a cheap tab, it's just going for a cheap price. The screen is actually very good quality, just not hi-res. It has very good black levels/contrast and nice color. Windows good font smoothing bridges some of the gap to a higher res screen. If you want to pay the extra for the Surface2 it is an notable improvement in many ways.

  • +1

Bloody awesome deal. Only issue is that I might want to be running windows programs on the go, although maybe I'm just deceiving myself. Also wish there were more basic programming programs/apps out there for RT, but probably asking for too much there.

EDIT: Notepad RT doesn't seem bad as editors go.

  • This RT fire sale is going the same way as the HP tablet thingy a few years ago. Couldn't even remember the name now.

    • +3

No. HP Touchpad went on fire sale as soon as it was released, and for $100 - $150. Surface RT has been out for a year, and the cheap prices are (in part) due to the newer model that was recently released. You can't charge full price for last year's model when this year's model costs the same and is vastly improved.

It's getting old hearing ill-informed people jump on the anti-Microsoft bandwaggon.

  • +1

How is the battery life ?

    • +2

Normally get about 8 - 10 hours if I am browsing the web and using it to play music connected to a bluetooth speaker. I don't watch videos or play games often, but if I watch a 40 min show on the train I don't notice the battery drain that much.

    • +2

Pretty good as it using ARM based processors. Should be able to easily get 8+ hours on that thing.

EDIT: Tech Radar put it at 7.5 hours while looping a 1080p vid

  • -7

This is a good price for an average product if you need to use Office or Live/Skype instant messaging.
I prefer to wait for Apple black Friday special pricing and get myself an iPad mini instead.

    • Price difference…. take your flame wars out of this thread.

  • +5

picked mine up an hour ago… fantastic tablet for $200… screen is very nice and contrasty… interface is ok… feels very good quality… camera is very good… beats cheap $200 chinese 10" tablet…. I was about to another ipad but this will do for sure…

    • +3

Exactly! Yes there are newer versions, yes there are non RT versions. And no it doesn't compare with a more expensive iPad.

But for this price it is brilliant! (Coming from an iPad owner).

    • Was the $25 credit a code on your receipt snajper?

Edit : Finally answered below by zone :-)

      • I didnt get the $25 voucher..Called the store and was told to come back and collect one…

  • Already have an iPad and MacBook air, this seemed to good a bargain and I wanted to try it.

I like it so far, keyboard seems snappier and office was an added bonus.

    Impressed so far.

  • Thanks, ordered one. Hope this meet my need so i don't have to share 2 iPads with my 2 kids.

  • +1

How do u get the $25 store credit?

    • +3

tell them it's the jimbo Jones promotion hopefully they will know what you want

  • Just picked one up from JBHFI Canberra City after trying the Woden store but they had none in stock. Most Canberra stores had 15+ in stock and they were all getting more in so this isn't a run out per se but I imagine this price will hang around now if Microsoft are also offering it.

Fortunately I have a spare Keyboard from when I bought my first Surface RT (silly Microsoft gave me 2) so for $223 my wife is set to go with this! I am an Apple user (iPhones, iMac, Apple TV, iPad 1) but I found the Surface RT to be a good road warrior and internet tablet, the keyboard and full office suite is the real selling point on these things.

  • +2

    Pretty average reviews.
Despite marketing as a 32gb tablet it only has about 16gb for storage. Also theres no point having 2GB of RAM when it uses an inefficient OS that slows it down significantly. Battery life is average…

    • -1

What exactly do you expect for $223?

    • I have the Surface 2 and really like it. I'm not sure on how much the Surface RT and Surface2 differ in performance but they are essentially the same device. I much prefer my Surface 2 over an iPad, and the screen size is so much better than the Nexus 7.

    • That first link is incomplete and should be: http://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/pc-mac/tablets/microsoft…

  • +1

To be fair, it is a much better product now than it was at launch thanks to 8.1 update and a handful of hotfixes. Yes it has it's technical shortfalls, the screen res being one of them but it is a very good screen visually and the microsoft ClearType actually makes it look higher res than it really is. I enjoy using my surface and find it more useful for the work I do than an iPad. The ability to use a USB port is great and the full office suite which you won't find outside of a Surface device makes it a great companion to a bigger desktop.

  • I got one from JBHiFi and they couldnt give me the $25 voucher. Said they had run out and they would ring me back tonight.
    Really annoying.

    • So they told you it was a voucher?
      The T&Cs don't mention a voucher…
I am trying to work out how this $25 credit works.

      • I would like to know this too. Is it an in store only thing or redemption via Microsoft ie send them receipt and they email a code?

Really I just want to know is if I buy it online from JB will it come with the $25 MS credit?

        • The T&Cs don't mention anything about sending in the receipt and there is no facility to do so. It seems unlikely you need to send the receipt in.
The T&Cs mention a promotion code but they are very cryptic in describing how you actually get this.
Surely someone who purchased can explain how it actually works?

        • +1

At the store now hold tight.

Edit: the salesman told the register staff the process is on sharepoint and since I had already paid and got no code the sale had to be processed again and this time I got the code just printed like a receipt.

        • Thanks jonoz :-)

        • The credit is applied to your Microsoft store account via a redemption code that is given to you by the store you buy the tablet from. It works much the same way as Google I guess, so when you buy an app it comes off your credit rather than being charged to your CC.

        • Thanks db1.
How is the code actually given to you - is it printed on the receipt or is it an additional item (like a scratch card, etc)?

        • +4

It's a code which is printed on your receipt. I had to specifically ask for it.

        • Thanks so much zone - someone I know bought one and they were not given the code as far as they could tell - now we know what to ask for :-)

(The store they bought from didn't seem to have a clue about the offer)

        • I tried to get it and they couldnt get the cash register to work with it

        • I just bought one too. They insist the code is the receipt number, but I don't see how that could work. Where is the redemption code supposed to be printed and what does it look like?

        • +1

drunifex - the register won't create the code if they don't select the option when processing the sale, it communicates with the Microsoft server only during the sale process…

fin3zt - I was initially told the code was the receipt number too - it is NOT !!!
The promotion code is printed on a totally separate piece of cash register paper; the code is similar to a Microsoft activation code you might see for Windows or Office (it also includes an additional PIN code).

I sympathised with the staff because an item that should be included by default is only included if they specifically tell the register to include it at the correct moment during the sale process (and after watching 3 different staff members struggle with it, I would have to say it doesn't seem at all intuitive).

In both cases the only reliable solution seems to be for them to give you a refund and then re-sell you the item, (none of the staff members, including the manager, could work out how to print it after the fact - they kept getting "server errors").

        • thats how they fixed mine in the end.

        • Thankyou oz-dave, I'm going to go back in to the store on Saturday with the tablet, I haven't opened it yet, so hopefully there won't be any problems returning and repurchasing the tablet, this time with the promotion code.

        • Easiest way is for them to pretend to refund you cash, and then sell it to you again with that cash :-)

  • Bought two :) Thanks all.

  • Thanks OP, bought one and also got the $25 credit.

    • How is the $25 credit given to you?
Printed on receipt or separate item?

      Edit : answered above :-)

  • Microsoft should learn now they have mark up the price a lot higher than people expected for this device.

If they mark down the Pro a bit it will sell like hot cake.

We want full Windows Tablet but not at that price.

  • I was seriously looking at one of these, but then discovered the main apps I want aren't available anyway :(

    • Anything Google, specifically Chrome
    • Steam
    • Playstation

Is Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 app support the same? ie if its available for one its available for both.

  • Can someone recommend a SD card for Surface RT?
    how about this: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/124629

  • I already have a Nexus 7 2012,

Should I get this or Nexus 7 2013?
Im after gaming of all sorts…

    thanks!

  • Ok going to get one tomorrow.

What accessories worth getting of eBay?

    Cover
    Screen protector ?

  • is it correct you just need a miniHDMI cable to connect table to a HDMI TV ?

Dont need an adapter like JB selling for $50 ?

    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/accessories/microsoft/sur…

    • Buy a $5 cable from ebay. You may need to wait a week or so.

You don't need an expensive adaptor. The Microsoft one is 'nice' and colour co-ordinated and bevelled to look like it's part of the tablet, but the other ones are functionally equivalent.

  • +4

I went back to jb and was given $25 voucher….
    Upgraded to 8.1, chucked 32gb microsd card…
To upgrade install all windows updates and then get 8.1 from appstore ..from memory 2.4gb all up and takes a while….
Micro hdmi to hdmi cable is needed to hook it up to TV. EBay has one for $5
Also It does not detect my WD live box even with registry hack….
I have offloaded my retina iPad to kids, my wife gets nexus 7 and I am have surf RT…very impressed…
Extra inch advantage over iPad is very welcome and screen is very good….
Love the keyboard and overall interface as it is very fast and easy to use …once you learn all the tricks…
    Battery life is awesome ….

Also you can free up 4gb of internal memory by dumping recovery partition on to external hdd …google for more info…

    • +1

I have a WDTV Live and it works fine…

      • Hmm… thanks for that…I have the latest update on RT and wdlive but still cannot be detected in add device menu…

      • Thanks got it working now with WDlive… well it started working today by itself…

        • It did that with my HP wireless printer too. It seems to sniff out wireless gear in the vicinity and configure itself automagically!

  • -3
    • +3

      OH REALLY?

    • +1

      No! You don't say?!

  • +1

Picked mine up just then. The cashier had no idea about the 25 MS points you get, neither did the salesman. Took them 5mins running around to find the deal of "25 Microsoft apps store credit" to put into the sale. All good now after they have the memo to all the sales people.

  • +1

    not available online…

  • +1

Bought one, was wanting a pro 2; but at this price I couldn't resist. I want the type cover 2 however that's almost the price of the surface Rt. Have there been any deals on that cover?

    • Exactly my thought process, was wanting Pro 2 as well. Some people have managed to bargain down the Type 2 a bit (~$100-$130), but no official deals out there. How have you found RT so far? Would you still have gone for it, or is the Pro 2 not a bad choice still for your uses.

  • +1

If you are getting keyboard, get the Type Cover 2! I had two touch cover teared. The Type Cover 2 is better built, it's thiner than Type Cover 1 with backlit and different colours. I got mine from JB for $129.

    • Is it water resistant/proof?

    • Do you have a receipt for the type cover 2 for $129, I can't find that price anywhere

Good Luck! I think I got this discount because I bought a Canon 5D mark iii from the same staff.
grab_ur_freebies: I can't tell if it's waterproof, and it's not mentioned in the spec, and sorry I'm not going to test it ;)

  • It's $149 at JB

  • +4

Now someone needs to make an OzBargain app for Surface.

    • There are three already. And none are as good as the mobile site. So exactly the same as iOS and Android then!

  • +2

Not sure if we are paying too much when RT is selling on special for US $180 with cover. http://techreport.com/news/25704/would-you-pay-180-for-a-sur…

    • +1

By the time you add Tax (it was selling in a physical store), and do the currency conversion it is about the same as we are paying here without the cover.
This was also a limited deal for one day only and was handed out, via a voucher, to people early on in the line, who had queued up for hours at a Black Friday sale. It wasn't readily available for quite a few days at stores where you could essentially just walk in and purchase.
So considering we can buy the cover for $66 in HN, we are paying $66 more - in my opinion not a bad deal considering how bad the "Australia Tax" can sometimes be.
(We do however get a 2 year warranty and 90 day technical support)
