I bought one of these a few months ago and it wouldn't work on any of my doors. They fit into the striker plate, and unless you have a very loose fitting or rattling door the latch will no longer engage with this foreign object in the way.
They don't work in any of the doors at my house because my doors have a raised frame. The door needs to be completely flat and level with the wall ie no fancy edging.
They work on every door I've tried on. (Just in case there's an impression that they don't work in general.)
I bought a pair of these last year, and have used them once while on holiday. It fit the fancy mag-stripe lock on the hotel room door, and kept room service out when they insisted on coming in despite me saying "no, thanks" through the door (for some reason my room didn't have a "Do Not Disturb" door hanger).
I reckon they're worth $10 for a pair, especially since you can give one away to someone vulnerable.
Used mine a few times. For the price, I think it is a worthy purchase for some piece of mind.

Didn't buy it as I already have one (which is fantastic quality I might add), just putting it out there for future buyers :)
If you want security when you travel guys this is the lock that will do it, we traveled to bali and took our 2 locks with us, dosen't matter what you put on your door( Signs) they just try to unlock it and come in, not with our locks they can't, we had ajoining rooms so we would put our stuff in one room with the qicklock and leave by the other room. I can't say enough about it, I was a sceptic at first but we don't go anywhere without it now. Col.
