Google Chromecast $52.40 Delivered from Fishpond.com.au

121
TOYS165

Not a great price compared to the US's $35 but it's the cheapest I've found for AUS.

Basically you add the Chromecast to your cart, put in a cheap toy (I found one for $4.22) and add the toys165 coupon at checkout which brings the price down to $52.40 for the Chromecast.

First post, so let me know if I've missed anything.

  • the reviews for Chromecast hasn't been great?

    • +3

The reviews I've read so far have been positive for the most part. Plus the people at XDA have found a way around the Netflix in Australia problem. Could you point me towards the negative ones?

    • I have one and absolutely love it. Use it for streaming YouTube and movies/TV shows off my 4TBs of network connected storage using tab streaming

  • I bought it last time when they had it for $40. A great device. I am going to buy another one for my mom.

  • +4

Why is $52.40 a good deal for Chromecast? There were much better Chromecast deals posted previously.

This is OZBargain, not static ice.

    • +1

Fair enough, but considering the next lowest price was $66.00 at DX I figured it was worth posting.

        • +14

Not everyone likes waiting around for prices to drop when they want/need something now.

Anyway you can always just not buy it if you don't think it's a good deal.

        • -8

People who needed a Chromecast would have bought one already.

This is not even a deal worthy to be posted on OZB. I don't want to neg vote this.

Chromecast is a good device / toy, but this is not what I considered a OZB deal.

        • +9

Well then I'll let Google know not to make any more?

You're entitled to your opinion, personally I don't see it as any less of a deal than 0.99c apps going for free or useless Udemy courses but hey that's what the vote system's for.

        • +1

No, you tell google to START SELLING THEM to AU CUSTOMERS. So that we don't have to pay 50% extra to those dodgy sellers.

The product is good, just sellers are taking advantages of Google not selling them to AU directly. I don't think it is good to encourage sellers to do this type of things.

        • +1

Your head is going to explode when you see this RRP deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/121427

        • -4

I did not +ve vote that. At least that's RRP, not the US RRP + 50% extra like this one.

Useless Udemy courses - well, they are free. I don't find them useless.

People who intend to buy one of these better make sure they really need it. Otherwise, it will be an expensive toy.

          $52.40 in 2014
          (this deal)

same seller and this is a "bargain"?

        • +5

Was actually $14.97 in 2013 for those quick enough. Chromecast from Fishpond has been posted four times in the last three months and this is the most expensive it has been.

          Boobs !!

…. Now that got your attention away from the great Chromecast debate

        • +1

@Donga - They also didn't follow thru for a number of ozbargainers (me included) for the deal. Fishpond = never again…

        • +3

Exactly. So why would anyone bother buying from them at an even higher price? Even more reason why this isn't a great deal.

I suppose at $14.97 it might be worth the risk. However, I think it's pretty bad form for them to cancel most of the $14.97 orders claiming there was no stock and then almost immediately start selling it again for $52.40.

  • +16

Last time I tried to buy a Chromecast from Fishpond they cancelled the order after about a week and took a couple more days to refund the money. Wouldn't go near them again.

    • +1

    • Same happened to me. Orders made after mine on the same day were honoured which made me even more confused

  • +5

Pricing is a bit strange at Fishpond - was $14.97 at one point though only a few got them and heaps got cancelled.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/125989

  • How bout buying it here for slightly more?
    http://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/google-chromecast.ht…

might have a better chance of actually receiving it

    • Shipping is $15 there

      • Found a 5 dollar off code which brought it down to 60 and they delivered within 3 days.

Thought I'd post for anyone still keeping track

  • +2

This is the regular price for Chromecasts via Fishpond.

Must of gone up in the last couple of days; checked out Fishpond about a week ago.

  • Someone fix the title please :P

  • +1

Great device, now even better with Plex. Can't say the same about the supplier.

  • I think this can do more than Chromecast for a lower price?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Measy-A2W-Miracast-TV-Dongle-Wire…

    • That one is DLNA, Miracast, AirPlay. More flexible, but not as smooth when it comes to things like youTube streaming / playback.

  • -6

This has been cheaper before no deal here.

    • +11

That would mean a lot of deals posted never should be as one hell of a lot of things have been cheaper before their current bargain.

Is it the same price as it normally is?
      Is it cheaper else where?

Unless your answer is yes to both of those then this is still a bargain for many.

      • Last month this was on sale for $14.95 and now its selling for $52 and you think its a bargain?

Has this been on sale for 70% less last month?

If your answer is yes then its not a bargain.

        Thanks champ

        • +2

Last months $14.95 was a pricing error that they decided to honour.
It was a very short lived mistake.

If I want to buy one now, and never knew it existed a month ago, how is any previous price of help to me now?
A guide sure, but maybe I really want it now, and not in a month or so when MAYBE it is cheaper than current discounted price again.

So using a pricing error as a guide to what constitutes a bargain is very floored.

        • What makes you say it was a pricing error or that they honoured it?

        • Sorry champ, it was not a pricing error.

It was a pricing strategy to build traffic to the site and it worked.

          Do you understand?

The sale price of this item is 70% more than last month.

          Again no bargain here.

          Whats next?

  • +6

    Fishpond.com.au - NEVER again!

    • +2

Why ? I got mine delivered not long ago , around 4 weeks from ordering date

  • -6

can be gotten cheaper and fishpond failed to deliver this deal last time, so no deal.

    • +3

      link to where its cheaper?

        • +2

I saw that too but a bit concerned that it ships from China and has "ezCast" written on it instead of Chromecast.

        • +2

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's fake man. The ezcast is a different thing altogether, they're on alibaba too. Was tempted to buy one but I'd rather the original thing.

        • +3

yup thats like saying one of those chinese ifone knockoffs running android is the same as buyin an apple ifone (not that im an ifan… but still)

        • Well to be fair, an iphone knockoff running android would be superior to a "real" iPhone running IOS).

        • +1

an iphone knockoff running android would be superior to a "real" iPhone running IOS

as i mentioned…. im not an ifan so i do totally agree :)

but i was just trying to make a point…..

i guess the better analogy would be to have bought a new galaxy note 3 which was running ios7? :P

        • +1

Sorry, I was just taking to opportunity to bag iPhones and iSheep. Don't mind me :)

    • If you are making claims about a cheaper price then you need to be able to supply a valid link to substantiate the claim, otherwise your just making clutter, and can't validate your negative vote.

    • +1

Provide an alternative, Fishpond delivered just fine last time. (I'm holding it?)

      • Thanks Sturmeh.

        I agree with you.

  • +3

fishpond is BS they took my money last time and after 15 days cancel my order saying they don't have it in stock

    • +2

They made a mess of my order as well. Charged my credit card twice. At the end I didn't get the product and had to email them close to 20 times before getting both transactions refunded. Not going to give them any more business.

  • +1

Concerned when a post starts of with "not a great price…"

  • +1

i cant wrap my mind around what this device does that WDTV doesnt do.

    • +4

It essentially lets you 'shift' media streams to it for play back.. the best example I have is that you could be looking for a video on you tube on your phone (quick and easy to do) start playing it .. its the one you want - hit the cast button and it goes to the TV for everyone else to see … you or others in the room can then keep browsing videos and send them to queue on the cast and it will then keep playing one after another .. so many devices (iPhones, Andriod Tablets etc) can update the one output .. pretty cool in that scenario… I'm sure we have all been with friends in front of a PC and trying to show each other funny stuff on youtube … worth $50 I would not think so. But that is only one use.. its a streamer and is based on the Chrome browser (cut down) so many things are possible, though local storage is limited.

But yes if your goal is to play ripped media from a NAS onto your TV then there are more dedicated devices to do that with - though PLEX is/will be on the Chrome Cast soon and its cheaper then a WDTV or AppleTV if you don't have one already it would look tempting.

      Mind wrapped?

      • Thanks for explaining it. I like explanations with examples.

    • The SDK isn't even ready yet, so it's really a concept product.

It's for pushing content from Android devices and PC's with Chrome directly to a TV.

WD TV uses other standards such as DNLA and you basically get to stream video where as Chromecast is all about letting you serve content directly from your phone. (Many phones, with minimal set-up.)

  • hmmm not a deal

  • I posted this deal Mind you first one to do so, I received it within 2 weeks so I can vouch for their delivery times, but what I cannot vouch for is their customer service as I've had no problems so there has been no need for me to contact them. They have taken up the price since I bought it though, it's worth the $50 guaranteed that you'd like it.

  • -4

Agreed, not a deal. It was on sale for $14.95 last month..
