  • what's the battery life like on a 4 cell?

    • If you believe the blurb above it says 9 hours. Just next to where it says 4 cell battery

      • +6

Yeah I know for a fact that a 4 cell on this sort of spec cannot last the quoted 9 hours.

I'm pretty sure that 9 hours would have been achieved with the screen on the lowest brightness, wifi off and running no apps

        • Even with the screen off I'm skeptical you'd get 9 hours on a 4 cell battery lol

        • +4

Did you try turning off the Laptop? that might work!

        • -2

If you shut it down, you get 9 hours…

        • I've got a Toshiba Z935ultrabook, it only has a 4-cell battery, but the best life of any I've ever used - 7+ hours.
It obviously depends on more than just the 'cells'.

    • +14

Official spec summary is 9 hours….

To be honest I would expect 7 hours.

We have done 20% load test and had 6 hours 12 minutes.

So internet browsing and ozbargaining should get around 7 hours (5-10% usage).

      Approximately, of course!

      • are you sure its a 4 cell or a 12 cell battery?

        • +3

Yes 4 Cell, 44.6wH Battery. This is also the largest that is capable of fitting.

The battery life is due to ULV processor and Optimus. Typically our notebooks cannot achieve these battery life even with 12 Cell because of the Full Scale CPU.

    • +2

I have a 4 cell on an older model Horize. It was fine for 1 year lasting 5hrs+ with wifi, then it dropped to about 1hr. Now at 2yrs it has 20min life.
Those cells are really bad ones, my old MSI machine still had 2hrs after 3yrs.

      • +1

That's pretty bad IMO. Did you take care of the battery? eg, full drain every now and then? and was it constantly hot?.

      • +3

Older models used 'Full Scale' CPU such as 45w Processor like i5 and i7. We have never had a ULV until now.

These Ultrabook Models use ULV CPU which are only 15w Processor such as i7-4500u and i5-4200u. Which means much longer battery life.

You might want to look at replacing the battery if it is draining that much now.

  • +1

    oh gosh this is tempting…

not a deal breaker, but are the keys backlit?

    • They keys are not backlit.

      • +2

        Ouch that hurts.

        • I bought one of these and have been using it for roughly 2 months now. True, the keys aren't backlit, but it's a fantastic laptop. Considering it's price and size, it's the best value laptop out there with a 745m graphics card and 4th gen i7. The matte screen is soooo nice and it's storage and RAM are easily upgradable (I've got a 512gb SSD just in the priamry drive).

So unless you really really want backlit keys, definitely consider this if you want an ultrabook with decent processing power :)

  • +1

Any chance you can do a special on a 15 inch?

  • +4

Clevo laptops have great price/performance ratios, I would recommend them if you're on the fence.

Also the fact that you're not forced into buying Windows as an OS is great for saving cash. If you're looking for an alternative, look to a Linux Distro such as Ubuntu or Mint

    • I bought one with the same thing in mind, but the hardware quality seems a bit lower than standard. I'm not sure why but I often get bluescreens after just 2yrs. Definitely get extra warranty on this.
Also they tend to come with little RAM on the base model.

      • +6

Maybe you should send through an email to our tech support. Between this and your battery life issue there may be something we should look at. We generally can help even if out of warranty.

      • +4

Generally blue screens are a software thing. That's my experience anyway. Try running linux off a thumb drive overnight and see what happens while you're asleep.

  • Operating System: No Operating System
So you have to buy and install your own? What is the approx. additional cost?

        • so witty jv

        • I'm a little worried that jv might not have been asking that facetiously??? ;)

    • +8

      For some people it's $0.

    • +1

I have a Toshiba with similar specs, my CPU is the 4700qm quad core though, this one is dual core. Same GPU though and run BF4 comfortably on auto settings which end up being medium. Still very nice gameplay and visuals.

    • 4 cell battery for games hmm.

      • +4

LOL, who plays games on battery?

  • +7

Man…. I'm half chubbed up. Give me backlit keyboard and 10hrs battery and I'm your b#%ch. Full chubby ho!!!!

  • Anyone know how these compare to the Metabox systems?

    • +3

I'm pretty sure they're the same.

I'm 90% certain they all come from the same supplier with each reseller adding their own pricing

      • Thanks, mate. Also, for those looking at these Clevo systems, Metabox is having a "Back to Work/School" special until the end of the month (Bonus Samsung EVO SSD, if I remember correctly).

        • +5

"Bonus". Our Horize systems have Plextor mSATA SSD on nearly all models as included, permanently. This is beneficial as you aren't using up one of your valuable platter drive spaces for an SSD. So you can have both SSD + a 750GB drive for example.

Pro's: Uses up just the mSATA bay, leaving platter free.
Uses slightly less battery life than the full version.
          Has 128GB instead of 120GB.

Con's: Slower in write speeds than a full drive, but same read speeds.

  • Hey Rep, great deal. Is the Ram user upgradable? What's the max amount?

    • +2

Google say it has 2 dimm slots so I think 16gb is the max?

      • +1

Correct. Make sure if you are upgrading though to try and use 'low voltage' memory.

        • +1

Yes folks make sure you buy 1.35V RAM if you are going to upgrade this down the road, not the older 1.5V stuff. Otherwise it may not boot at all!

    • From their website you can upgrade it to 16gb
So i think its upgradable and the max 16gb

  • +53

Why would you get a laptop like this when you could get a similar spec Apple laptop for twice the price?

      • +1

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic, mate.

        • +10

I'm pretty sure the apple fanboy quip was in reference to the fact that a similarly speced laptop from apple would be closer to 3 times the price, not twice. just sayin.

    • -2

It's cause we are on ozbargain, why buy one apple laptop when you can get two of these for the same price as one apple laptop :P

$1299 with Win8 vs $1249 for MBA, which is more than fast enough for 90% of peoples needs (and if you're wanting games on max graphics, hot tip: don't buy an ultralight laptop, and don't get anything that isn't Windows)

      This vs MBA:
      Weight: 1.8kg vs 1.3kg
Battery life: 7 hrs at 20%, vs 12 hours @ 50%. Every day use though you'd be getting more like 7-8 hrs of MBA, good luck getting 3 hrs out of this.
Case Quality: POS plastic, vs nice Aluminium
Keyboard Quality: Cheap as they could build it vs nice feeling backlit keys
Touchpad: Not even worth a comparison it's so one sided

If ALL you care about is getting the best graphics you can in an ultralight (almost like wanting the most fuel efficient monster truck you can find, but anyway…) then sure, good deal. The rest is a downer.

      • +10

It's easier to agree with Mac users than argue, so sure, I 100% agree with you. Your comparison is completely fair and unbiased.

        • +9

So apart from CPU, GPU and RAM, in the example you have given the MBA annihilates this laptop. I know for most Mac users build quality and aesthetics are higher on the list of importance than the main components of an actual computer/laptop. Like I said, I agree with you.

        • +5

          I'm with rochow.

Let's not forget, the Apple logo on the back of the MBA screen lights up too! Truly riveting stuff!

      • +13

        The differences between this and the MBA you refer to;
        -has a weaker processor
-has 4gb of ram and isn't upgradable, nor is the hdd
        -has a terrible resolution @ 1440 x 900
-has no dedicated gpu and can't play 99% of games
        -screen is an inch smaller
        -uses osx

for me these are all huge downsides.

        • i dont knwo about you but i play games on computer and laptop i prefer something with longer battery life because i'll be on the go.

      • +10

You should remove emotive language if we're really being serious about comparisons - e.g. 'POS' plastic vs 'nice' aluminium?

Also, have you used the this model of the Horize's trackpad? If not, how can you compare the two?
        Ditto for keyboard?

        This vs MBA
        1080p vs 1440x900
        1.6gHz i7 vs 1.3gHz i5
        gt745m vs onboard graphics
        8gb memory vs 4gb
        $1199 vs $1249

Preference notwithstanding these are obviously some pretty major spec differences between the two, so I'm not sure what your point is… ?

The Horize is cheaper, faster, better graphics performance, better screen.

The MBA is lighter, better battery life, and possibly better build quality (can't really quantify this; its not enough to just say 'duh, its obvious')

Courses for horses my friend, not sure where the vitriol comes from.

Also, saying 'fast enough for 90% of people' still leaves 2 million Australians who would prefer this, no?

        • +7

Exactly, I'm with you. Why can't all laptops be made of the most expensive (over priced) machined aluminium known to man.

        • +3

You haven't seen the unit. It appears to be metallic, not a plastic POS. You are commenting on a trackpad and keyboard you haven't used and there aren't any reviews on. Your arguments are emotional and made of spiderswebs.

Linux runs most games. Steam's own operating system is Linux based…
Having no OS is a perk in terms of money saved, and most people buying this wouldn't shell out $100 for an OS, it isn't very hard to get one for free.

Yes, screen resolution is a huge deal.

If we are going on what's "good enough for 90% of peoples needs", save $1000 and buy a $300 laptop instead of a MBA, because all you can do on it is check facebook and browse the web, but I do that on my phone anyway.

        • -6

Linux, right now, can't play a lot of games especially older ones. The conversation will go a lot differently in the years to come, however this laptop will be for kids play only by then, so the point is moot.

Most people wouldn't shell out $100 for an OS? Most people don't even know what an OS is.

Save money? Good luck getting anywhere near the purchase price on when it comes to upgrade time. My i7, 16GB, 2GB graphics desktop tower would get nothing $ wise compared to my 'weak' Apple.

The same way a 3Ghz Pentium 4 is simply better then a 'weak' 1.7Ghz i7? There's a lot more to a good or bad screen then the resolution.

Yep, on an i5 processor all you can do is browse Facebook and check the web. So you're saying a MBA has nothing on this laptop, yet a $300 laptop is equivalent to a MBA? Please.

    • +1

I think the second half of the price in Apple is for the OS that works!

      • +3

        the OS that works!

It only works on Apple hardware though…

Other OS's work on many different manufacturers PCs… It's a bit like choosing between a dictatorship and a democracy, some prefer one to the other…

      • +4

OS X is way too over rated, I just don't see the appeal of it.
It looks better than Windows, and is cheaper (but you need more money to buy the hardware), that's about it I think, you get less software, games, flexibility, and Windows isn't that unstable anymore. Some people just love OS X because they say it's "easier to use", but i honestly find it very hard to use.

        • +1

totally agree. I spent two years with my MBP (dodging the vista years) and was happy to come back to Windows 7 which is a top OS imho.

  • hey store rep, how long do you think this deal will go for? i'm in need of a laptop and this seems like a great deal but i'd like to do more research.

  • Hey rep,

Can you do a better deal on the Horize W110ER? Like it was a month ago?

    thanks.

  • Hi rep. If I order one with the OS - will it come to me OS installed and work straight from the box?

My last experience buying a laptop was hours of time wasted so want ease of use

    • Also with that, do we get the OS retail box - have had experience where original cd was never given so i couldn't reformat

EDIT: is it easy to add a hdd/ssd to the 2nd bracket?

      • You don't get a box as we are an oem. You do get the install disc and driver cd and the product key will be on the laptop itself.

    • Yes we install the operating system and all drivers. It would be ready out of the box.

  • -2

This isn't an ultrabook. I doubt it's <21mm and the weight is well over what you'd expect.

    • +1

What are you talking about? This is a Macbook Air KILLER. Doesn't matter it'll die 2 hours into your flight, look at the RAM baby!

    • +10

It's bang on 21mm thick and only 1.8KG. If people can't handle carrying the extra few hundred grams over a Mac or whatever else is out there, while getting this level of added performance/customization, then maybe they should look for a deal on a cheap gym membership instead :P

Edit: Also rochow, got any actual sources to back up the claimed limited battery performance? You seem to think it will die off in a couple hours yet the store rep said they ran it at 20% load for over 6 hours. Which seems fine to me :)

      • -8

It's portable. I put the MBA in a backpack, which then fits nicely within the 7KG carry on luggage limit. Sure, I could buy a 15" 3kg powerful laptop and carry it in a separate bag, that's super inconvenient to haul around though.

Especially when you want a trackpad as big & nice as a Macbook your options are limited. Of you're sitting at home with a keyboard & mouse it's not an issue, then again neither is portability.

If you want a powerful machine with no portability concern, then this laptop needs to be compared in a different category.

20% load isn't much, bigger concern is no mention of the screen brightness which is rather critical given how much the screen can drain the battery compared to a laptop at minimum load. After all, this is a 'power computer'. What's the point of buying one if the only way you can get decent battery life is with 1 web browser open?
