This is an Intel approved ultrabook and the dimensions and weight are accurate.

Well done rep, judging by the number of positives, this seems like a good deal.

Looks like it's the "day of the jackkel" ;)

    • Thank you very much!

  • Can RAM be upgraded to 32GB?

    • +1

Unfortunately not. It has 2 sodimm sockets for up to 16gb

    • +2

Don't take this the wrong way but who needs 32gb of ram on a laptop of this spec? The bottleneck would easily be the CPU or something else before you go anywhere near 16gb, let alone 32.

  • Do these ultrabook get hot easily? How loud is the fan noise?

EDIT: Hoping to use it in a quiet space so require it to be quiet or have no sound whatsoever

Planning to upgrade to Plextor M5M 256GB if it makes a difference

    Thanks.

    • Hi,

The fan will of course ramp up and on when the dedicated GPU is being utilized. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about that when you want discrete graphics.

You may be interested in the ultrabook touch pro here:

      http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/561-horize-w840sut-ul…

As this doesn't have the dedicated graphics and it has the i5 ULV processor this should be quiet.

  • I have been looking at this laptop for a while.
Except not the Horize or the Metalbox version. (An overseas version as I need non-English windows and also price is actually better, but with $200 cheaper it is a hard call).

The experiences I read on forums overseas is that this model lasts at least 6 hours minimum on just web-browsing and light gaming on battery.

It is mainly for people who want an ultra portable but wants a capacity for light gaming in their breaks or if they go away on business at the cost of 200g or so heavier than the MBA. Screen is 1 inch bigger than MBA with better resolution, but I think MBA has better colour reproduction. But personally I think that extra screen realestate is more important (considering how cramp lightroom and photoshop is even on a 15"monitor already), but this is one laptop you can take on your holiday and still do work on it (I would think twice about taking my current 2.3kg laptop to anywhere but home and office these days).

I think they are aimed at slightly different markets so I doubt this will be a true MBA killer.

If you are a specs junkie, then go Gigabyte P34g for the same weight, better spec but HORRIBLE battery life

    • I have had a look at this about the screen colour reproduction.

From what I can figure out (I don't do much with Apple)

Macbook Air 13" 900P Panel = 45% Colour Gamut NTSC
      Horize W840SN 14" 1080P Panel = 72% Colour Gamut NTSC

      Just some food for thought.

  • I'm a few clicks away before processing my order, but I just wanted to confirm a couple of things:

    1. I plan on adding an additional HDD to my purchase, the 750GB one. Will this be pre-installed once delivered or do I have to do it myself
    2. I'm buying this ultrabook for the purpose of gaming - from what I can tell it holds up fairly well, getting about 40FPS on BF4 on medium and I'm okay with that. Is this classified as a gaming capable laptop?
    3. You say in one of the above comments that this is an "Intel approved" ultrabook. Does that mean Intel requires products be put through tests for quality prior to having their brand/CPU installed on their machines?

Thanks for bearing with these questions, I appreciate your communication so far with our community.

    • +4

      1: yes
      2: yes
3: not tests for quality, but they have to meet a certain criteria in terms of weight, width, cpu etc

      • +2

That's a sale then, thanks for the chat and thank you OP for providing this deal to us.

  • How does the GT745M perform?

  • Would this be ok for some minor photoshop editing? Programming would be ok too right?

    • Yes of course. Both would be able to be done quite fine.

If you are doing anything intensive I would suggest stepping up to a hybrid ultrabook/notebook platform like the W650SR. We call these ultranotes. Bit heavier and bulkier but have that nice large processor and a step up in graphics too:

      http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/553-horize-w650sr-ult…

      • W840SN should be ok for my work.
But the ultranote you suggested looks interesting, any deal on that?

        • Sorry unfortunately on this model we can't do any better.

  • +1

Just back here this morning to check in on the rochow slam fest. Good times.

  • Is the 8GB 1 stick or 2? Looking to upgrade to 16GB by getting another 8GB.

    • 1 Stick. Make sure to use low voltage memory if you are upgrading later!

  • +1

Apple does have some nice packaging though…

  • Great deal, and lovely to see a matt screen!

  • Call me old-fashioned or someone who lives in the dark ages…but I haven't heard of the manufacturer of this lappy…Are they reliable and trustworthy? Maybe I should do a Google search for Horize…

    • I used to care, but now I realize you are paying for an "Intel" chip, with "Nvidia" graphics etc irregardless of the brand.

    • Horize is a rebadged Clevo.. like Metabox. Refer:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clevo

I think I read somewhere before they sell laptop chassis to other big brand manufacturers as well, as the only chassis manufacturers in the world are Sager, MSI and Clevo.

    • +2

Have a look at the Whirlpool forums to see the feedback on these laptops, and also see if there's any threads with complaints or issues. You'll find that Clevo just makes laptops without the fanfare and cuts expenses where it needs to (eg advertising budgets).

I have absolutely no brand loyalty to anyone because no one is loyal to customers these days. So I'll buy the best laptop at the best price regardless of brand. That said every time I look at a laptop I start with Horize/Metabox as the benchmark to compare. I rarely find better systems at price/performance ratio.

I bought a highend system from Jack about 3 years ago and apart from some faulty RAM early on I've had absolutely no issues. My GTX 485M still plays BF4 so I should be able to get another year out of it.

  • Is it worth considering HORIZE W840SU-T ULTRABOOK TOUCH PRO i5 and touch screen to $100 less? http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/561-horize-w840sut-ul…

    • This is the alternative model for those interested in saving some money and that want a touch screen.

      Pro's:

      $100 Less
      Touch screen display
      Longer realistic battery life

      Con's:

      No discrete graphics
      No metal finish
      Slower processor

      • thanks!

  • Great deal, any chance of student discount rep?

    • +1

Sorry, can't do any further discounts!

  • hey OP, can you do us a deal on the W670SR pretty please?

    • Hi,

The W670SR is already on promotion. It has $229 off and will expire the end of this month also.

  • Are you sure the video ram is DDR5 as both links below say it is DDR3 and have no options to select a DDR5 configuration?
    http://www.kongcomputers.com//product-detail/gamers/metabox-…
    http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/p2438.htm…

    • I am unsure. I will list it as blank until further notice when I have had a tech go through it and check.

  • Shame it takes so long to build as I need it asap. If I could get it within 5 days I'd be on it right away :(

  • I'm no expert on laptops/ultrabooks,
but how does this laptop is compared to others generally for this price range?

    • This is pretty much the same laptop as on http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/p2438.htm… from what I can see difference being the FHD screen which is $79 extra from affordablelaptops

      • And the Intel AC wireless.

Also we build these ourselves are not a drop shipping company. We support and service all of our customers.

  • What do folk recommend? Windows 7 or 8?

    • Windows 7

    • i say windows 8 as well
dont like the interface of 8

    • I think this machine will run better and more optimized on Windows 8, however it all depends if you like that interface or not!

  • Hi Rep, is there an option to switch to Intel graphics from nVidia Grphics when not needed? also, how much does 750GB 7200rpm Hard Disk Drive add?
    Thanks

    • +1

      Hi,

Yes this uses optimus for switching. So it will always be on Intel graphics unless it needs to switch to the nVidia graphics.

Do you mean how much weight? Around 80grams.

      • Thanks, and yes I meant weight :)

  • Hi Rep,

I quite like the spec but it is lacking touch screen (I need touch screen for Windows 8), 256gb SSD. What will the price be with that upgrade?

    Thanks

    • Hi,

      Sorry cannot do that unfortunately.

You could look at the W840SU-T model which has the touch screen, but unfortunately does not have the nVidia graphics.

  • Today's the last day you can get this offer~!

    • +2

Yes actually due to low stocks we will have to close off this special as of 3PM AEST.

We will be moving the special to the W650SR.
