  • If only it was same as the last deal, which didn't exclude gift cards.

The PS4 controller seems like a good deal. Cost $71.98 with the discount

    • That is heaps good. I just saw HN selling the PS3 ones for $73.

  • Anyone recommended a cheap laptop to go with this deal. For the girlfriend and really just to to basic office. No games, may watch a movie from time to time. Nothing special needed at all. Ideally something that is already on sale so it makes it an awesome price too :)

    SAMSUNG 55" (139cm) Full HD 3D Smart LED TV UA55F7100 http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tvs/samsung-55-139cm-full-hd-3d-… $1572.30 delivered

    • That's the first thing I checked (saw it was already a pretty good price with the 20% off sale)… so tempting

  • +1

Not as good as the Dec 29 sale. Anyway, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition 16GB Wifi is $572.40 with this deal.

    • This is very tempting!

  • looks like they removed the pebble smart watch from the website..shame.

    • They also removed all iPAD, as in make it temporary out of stock.

      • Excludes Apple. Clearly in the T&Cs

  • Thinking of PS4.

    • +1

      Doesn't work with PS4, I've tried it.

      • I bought 2 PS4's last time they had the "10% off until midnight" deal. Worked fine then.

      • What a shame, I would of liked to get one after missing out last time.
I wonder if it's unavailable just because there's no stock?

  • +1

Thankyou so much op!! Just got the Samsung PS51F5000 51 inch for $647.11 delivered :-)

  • +3

Another good item. Recharge vouchers are 10% off.

    • But delivery of $4.95 kills it for me.

      • Free delivery on $100 and $180 Telstra recharge vouchers.

  • +10

I haven't seen enough feedback about DS that wouldn't warrant a online purchases from them , 10 % off doesn't seem worth the risk of a pain in the arse experience

  • +9

do not order online with dse unless you want your cc charged straight away and have to send multiple emails / phone calls to only get a refund since they don't actually send your product

    • If you're requesting a refund, you'll have to run around and put in the effort regardless of online websites. I bought gift cards, tablets and PS4 console at DS online and did not have problems.

      • +9

I had the same experience. I didn't want a refund I just wanted the product and a month and half later no product no call no anything. Had to call them 8 times, complained on twitter and facebook before I got my refund.

        • +4

Dont get me started with refunds, i bought a mi gear action cam on the 26/12/13, returned it back to them for a refund. 9 calls later, 3 tickets raised, 2 complaints and i am yet to receive a refund. Even though they have acknowledged they have received the item. Ive never so frustrated.

    • This happened to me, charged me, no product, had to call them and chase up.

  • -4

Can't find gift cards at website, anyone else tried using on gift cards.

    • +3

Gift cards are excluded from this sale and they have been removed from their online and ebay stores.

  • Note that delivery is only free for certain items (eg. Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014)

  • I'm thinking about buying some Telstra recharge vouchers. Not as good as the Coles Express 15% off deal but it'll do until Coles Express do them again. It's a shame it's home delivery only.

    • Delivery of $4.95 kills it for me.

      • +2

Free delivery on $100 and $180 Telstra recharge vouchers.

  • Anyone with an educated opinion on what the best DSLR for a beginner would be? Budget $600-700 absolute maximum $1000. Can DSLR cameras be bought cheaper elsewhere after the 10% off?

A mate recommended a canon 550D about a year and a half ago, is this still a good choice? (Havent checked if available yet)

    • Have you considered this? It's a mirrorless, technically. But really good camera for a pretty good price (within your budget). https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/132324

      • That looks like a decent option. Not sure what mirror less means yet :p. My mate would probably slap me for going non-canon…

        • A camera with a sensor that is comparable to a DSLR and interchangeable lenses but you compose your shot through a screen rather than a viewfinder.

Canon's mirrorless camera is the EOS M but there are better ones out there imo. A good reason to go for EOS M is if your mate has lots of Canon DSLR lenses that you can borrow and use with an adapter.

        • You make it sound as if it's impossible for a camera to be both mirror-less and have a viewfinder. It might not be optical, but a lot of mirror-less ILCs do in fact have a viewfinder of some sort.

    • I'd recommend the Nikon D5300 it retails for $1200 with the 18-55mm lens. I managed to pick it up for $900 a couple of weeks back when JB were having 15% of cameras. I'd wait for JB to have a sale again, there were lots of bargains, the D5200 was only $765 with the 18-55mm lens which is probably more suited to your budget.

    • A camera is only as good as your photography skills and what you need the camera for helps in suggest options. If its just for casual holiday photography, I would suggest getting a good point and shoot. DLSRs are big and not everyone likes lugging them around. If you actually want to take the time to learn to take good photos, the 550D is definitely a good starting point. If you don't mind getting used ones, keep an eye out on Gumtree. I got myself a 750D Twin Kit off JB for $909 and two days later some guy was selling his "like new" Canon 5D for $600 on Gumtree.

      • This is for my new mega-hobby. I want to learn to shoot and use good photographic theory, and then later learn photoshop. This is to assist my blogging and web-development, also with a view to maybe some professional photography/journalism. Does this change your advice at all?

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want point and shoot, and I don't want "auto" features. I want to focus and do everything myself so that I really learn the theory properly.

        • +1

Great. In this case, you re definitely going towards a DSLR.

As I said in the previous comment, keep an eye on Gumtree if you don't mind going for a used camera to start off with. Get used to the controls. Learn and practice.

A used DSLR like a 600D or a 1000D will set you back somewhere between $350 and $500 with lenses.

Save the rest for later when you upgrade. You'll need it for good lenses and a body.

If you want to compare cameras, use www.snapsort.com

For learning resources, check www.reddit.com/r/photography and the sidebar there. You'll find a lot of helpful people there and a lot of great resources.

    • +2

The 600D is probably the best bang for your buck camera out there at the moment if you want a DSLR. Mirrorless can be cheaper.

    • Also, I have noticed Kogan are cheaper than discounted DSE. Never bought anything from them though.

    • I would seriously consider a Sony NEX-5/6. Pricing is really good at the moment especially since Sony has released a new range of mirror-less ILCs in recent months.

Panasonic TH-P50ST60A was $1097 in store as part of the 4 day sale leading up to today (20% off), shame it's not online, guess it's on run out in stores only. I was in my local this afternoon after 3, this deal should apply late in store on Sunday as well, help the stores sell through some stock … I probably would have bought the Panasonic.

Just as a side note, the frame of the Pana plasma was super hot in places which really surprised me, not sure if it was because the display had been on day, but in comparison to the other panels it was hot, particularly in the top left corner where there is nowhere for the heat to escape.

The Panasonic 50" Smart 100hz LED LCD TH-L50E6A is currently $998, so with the promo $898.20 seems a pretty good buy, although the sales guy at Dick Smith said the speakers on it are terrible. http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tvs/panasonic-50-127cm-full-hd-s…

    Also Panasonic 50" basic LED LCD $797 then 10% off, $717.30 - http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tvs/panasonic-50-127cm-full-hd-l…

    • the frame of the Pana plasma was super hot in places which really surprised me

It is a tad warm but coming from an older plasma, maybe the heat is more concentrated as it has to come up through a thinner case?

although the sales guy at Dick Smith said the speakers on it are terrible

I know it won't suit everyone but really, if you're going for a 50" and up panel, get some decent surround speakers.

      • I guess if the plasma was set in 'shop' mode, ie nice and bright for the store type environment, rather than home mode, then it'd run warm. But it was a definite surprise to me, only noticed when I swiveled the screen. My 7yr old Panasonic 42" has never been that hot to the touch.

I agree that you would need upgraded sound, a lot of user reviews on flat screen tv's these days seem to have 'sound quality' as an issue. Good sound quality can't be expected from such super thin TV's on the cheaper end. My comment was more to let anyone interested not to expect good sound from it.

  • If only the LOGITECH 5.1ch Surround Speakers Z906 was still in stock it would be a great buy.

  • I need some advice please guys. http://www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/hp-envy-15-6-t…

Any good for $1350? It would be used for:
    - web browing (sometimes up to 30-40 tabs open at a time)
    - watching 1080p movies (just one a time ;) )
    - some photoshopping and video editing occasionally
    - playing the Sims 3 & probably 4, and also older games like Fallout 3 & NV or Skyrim. Some newer games would be great too, if it could run them
    - I generally have a lot going on at once, so needs to be able to handle many programs and apps at once
    - some general coding, program and app creation, etc.

If you think this laptop could handle these tasks with ease, please let me know. I'm a bit worried because if it doesn't meet my expectations, Dick Smith don't seem to accept returns for this sort of 'change of mind' situation.

I think it has been $1299 before, but I'd use my 28D card and keep my fingers crossed for the next 6 months.

    • I've just built myself a new pc today, took about 3 hours. It was $1800, and is freaking amazing as you can expect for the money. For about half of what I paid, you can get a very decent pc to do everything you just described, and it will run it all better. If you can trade off the portability, its the best thing you can do. BTW for ~$1200-1300 you can build a pc that should run all new games on ultra, and will work with CS6 magnificently.

      • We built a desktop pc last year, and while it's great, I'm after a notebook this time. It was a decision I struggled over for ages, and finally decided on the pc. I don't regret it, but am at the point where I would just love a new laptop.

I'm also being greedy, and want a FHD touchscreen, hence the higher price… heh.

Edit: and uh, web browsing* in my original post.

      • Built mine for 1400 1.5 years ago, still runs every current game on ultra.

    • +1

looks like a fairly decent GPU - http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-750M.90245.0.… so games shouldn't be much of an issue.

4th gen i7, i don't know too much about photoshop/vid editing requirements but the hyperthreading there won't do any harm

while there is 16GB RAM, lack of an SSD might have slowdowns for OS cache or general use.

this is actually not bad for the price imo, don't hold on the battery lasting long though with the i7 and graphics card going on. can't imagine it going for much more than 4 hours lol (also heating/noise might be a pain).

      • +1

Honestly, I've been living on notebookcheck the last few days, and am not too impressed with the 750M. Would prefer a 760 min. It's more a case of wanting something better, rather than needing, haha. Same with the i7 - would prefer a 4700HQ, but it's a minimal difference, and probably one I wouldn't even notice.

Mm, I am a bit worried about the heat and fan noise. I have a HP at the moment, it's nearly 5 years old - you can see why I need an update - and heats up like crazy when I try to do anything other than word processing (exaggeration, but it's pretty bad). It doesn't miss a beat though. Just gets HOT and noisy.

The battery isn't an issue, I've had to have my current notebook plugged in all the time, as two batteries were completely stuffed after a short time. I don't it around, I just lounge with it. Being able to move it around unplugged for a while would be a treat though!

I really don't know what I'm doing. I feel this isn't the best choice, but it's a decent pricepoint for a ready-made notebook with decent specs.

        • +2

The 750M is OK for light gaming and should be fine for the games you list (Sims 3/NV/Skyrim). It might start to struggle with newer titles over the next year or so, though, since it's underpowered compared to the PS4/Xbox One and most recent desktop graphics cards.

As far as laptops go, though, the 750M is a good compromise if portability is important to you, because anything significantly more powerful (e.g. the 770M and above) can only be found in heavier/noisier/bulkier/hotter "gaming" laptops.

Personally speaking, I don't like gaming laptops much — I'd much rather have a more portable laptop combined with a gaming desktop.

        • You're right. I'd really rather a bulky laptop that can handle whatever I can throw at it, rather than something that is going to feel outdated in a year or two. That said, I don't play games too often, but I would rather have a machine where I can play if I want to.

Thanks for you input, I decided against the HP for a few reasons. Mainly because of the graphics card though :)

      • +2

lack of an SSD might have slowdowns for OS cache or general use.

What will certainly cause slowdowns is that sh*tty 5400RPM HDD which will make boot times and regular PC maintenance chores such as antivirus scans, defragmentation, copying/moving files, downloading large files, installations, and browsing through large folders full of thumbnails, painstakingly slow chores. Even in comparison to a 7200RPM HDD it's a noticeable difference.

Heck, even my crappy $500 Acer laptop has a 7200RPM HDD in it.

        • I definitely had trouble finding notebooks in local stores (HN, JB, TGG, etc.) that had 7200rpm hard drives. Or much other than Intel 4000 graphics, for that matter. They were there, but were the minority.

Basically, I was looking in local stores because I wanted something now. I kind of realized that by buying this laptop online last night, defeated the purpose and I was better off spending the same amount of money for something completely overpowered from cpl or something. Or spending a lot less for something appropriate. Thanks for your help! :)

    • +1

      Not bad, but you could consider this extremely similar set-up for $1146 (approx $200 less, though delivery might be approx $35);

      http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/hp-envy-touchsmart-15-…

Has almost identical specs - full HD touch, almost identical CPU/GPU.
Differences are 8GB RAM rather than 16GB, but has inclusion of a 24GB SSD cache drive which will speed up some aspects, particularly start-up/resume times.

Not sure how much an extra 8GB of RAM is worth these days, but in general for the tasks you are describing I think 8GB would suffice anyway.

      • I'm not sure about the ram either, but as you said, I think 8gb would be enough. Unfortunately, the notebook you've linked to has a GT 740M. I was dubious about the 750M, and I definitely won't go lower. Thanks though!

Price isn't really a concern - I'd love a bargain, but I don't want something average. I am at a point where I just want quality electronics/playthings. I'll definitely be buying online.

  • +1

As I said in the other thread good luck if things go wrong. The worst customer service I've come across.

    • I have to agree with dins, worse customer service I've ever encountered.

  • Hmmmmm Acer w3 810.
8inch windows 8 tablet. With ability to charge, output hdmi and use usb all at the same time.
    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tablets-accessories/acer-w3-810-…

works out $264 something if taken 10% off and Acer $49 cashback. The website itself seems to say the cashback is valid until may of this year, but you have to lodge it as soon as you receive your tablet (within 14 days of purchase).

Not worth it for me, but it might be what some people are looking for, maybe for a silent media server perhaps? Or to turn their TV into a smart TV? I don't know.

Toshiba Basic Portable Hard Drive 2TB is currently at $143.10 which is the cheapest Australian stock I have ever seen, but if you apply additional 10% discount, it becomes $128.79.

Well it's slightly more expensive than the Amazon deal, but still this is the best price for the Australian stock.

  • Any good pre paid or unlocked mobile phone deals? I cant really see much of phones online, maybe they took off the good ones.

  • So any good deals? Anyone care to highlight please….

    • I thought maybe the 55LN5710 LG Smart 100hz LED LCD (non 3D) for sub $1k with the extra discount is ok, if someone was after a cheap 55" LED anyway. Hard to find any quality/expert reviews on it though.

  • Cheers OP, was looking for a cheapish tablet for a friend who didn't want an iPad. Managed to get her the Samsung Nexus 10 16GB for $359.10 which she was happy with. I know the newer one is coming out, but would have also been a lot more than this and she wanted something with a decent screen so she could use it to browse the web on the couch instead of having to use her laptop!

  • i will never buy online from these guys again.
It took about six call and 2.5 months to not get my gift cards.
In the end I asked for a refund.
One hour wait on the line to speak to someone almost every time.
Then the lies….It will be done in 2-3 days…lies….It will be done in 2-3 days…lies.
SO me and DSE are done.

  • i bought the 55" f7100 and got the email today saying its shipped with startrack with tracking no.
