It's a PoS. This is a fundamentally flawed product that was further screwed up by AU FTA laws. It also can have a hand in corrupting your HDD as I figured out after three HDDs and two systems.

Ah, I guess you haven't used it as a tuner on your PC then, its one of the best dual tuners on the market…

      • No. I shelved it after I realized it was stuffing up my HDDs. I even sent my system back to Sony as I thought it was a fault with the console. Not sure why turbodude took it upon himself to neg my experience. If it's good for PPP C then I can understand the value but for PS3 it's rubbish hence the lack of official support.

Is this a common problem with hdd failures in the ps3? Or just your experience with the unit?

I for one LOVE my Play TV, i slotted in a 500gb hard drive into my PS3 (slim) and havent looked back. When it came out twin HD tuner recorders were ~$800 and I find the interface very user friendly compared to say Panasonic's TV and PVR systems.

Problems I've had: The system froze once and I lost the Play TV library!? But no
corruption of HDD and the rest of the PS3 files were fine.

My HDD does overheat a bit (whether that is Play TV related or not I dont know, it does it playing gmaes as well) which makes the fan a bit noisy, to beat this I installed a Coolermaster Laptop cooling pad underneath the PS3 and now the fan speed is much lower.

I was asked by customer support when the second console arrived and began corrupting whether I had anything plugged into the console. When I told him I had a PlayTV he ad used me to remove it as they had encountered issues with it like this. He advised me to return it to Sony but I had bought mine from the UK.

        • Not their fault you bought faulty HDDs.

That's a stupid comment, I replaced one, the next came with a replacement PS3 troll.

I've been using one on my PS3 since they first came out - never corrupted a HDD, and quality is actually really good - better than my Panasonics inbuilt Tuner.

I will agree it is massively hampered my AU laws - and it is not very supported by Sony, no updates for ages (and probably never again).

But my PlayTV is still used regularly without issue for recording and Time slipping. Also has a much better guide than my TV.

      • Hampered by AU laws in what sense?

        • It's not actually AU laws as such, but the optional FreeTV compliance (Sony didn't have to comply). It doesn't allow ad-skipping (can only skip in 10min blocks), and max FF speed is limited to 30x.

Set it to a different region, you can skip in 1 minute blocks, and do 120x FF. But other regions won't pick up all the Aussie channels.

I think there may be more restrictions, like exporting shows etc - but not 100% sure.

      • Agreed. I've been using my PlayTV for a couple of years now, and have never had a problem. The recording is excellent, and the interface isn't too bad.

I still use it for scheduling recording even though I recently upgraded to a Samsung Smart TV, but I use the TV's inbuilt timeshift function.

  • This dual USB tuner has a flaw; if you're tuning (changing channel) on one tuner, the other tuner drops out momentarily. So if you're viewing one channel on one tuner, and the other tuner is retuning to scan the EPG, you get dropouts.

I've used these on linux with VDR, and had to change to a multiple of Leadtek single tuner usb sticks to get rid of that problem.

  • I remember a couple years back these were going for really cheap, and now they've jumped back up!
Can't imagine this is a new model, since they haven't updated it in ages.

  • These work awesomely well as dual tuners with ozbargains favourite microservers

    • I've been trying to get this working on my micro-server without much success. Would you happen to have a link to the "Idiot's Guide" for me please?

      • +1

sorry dont have a microserver myself, but helped mate set one up using the links at the bottom of this page: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv

From memory it was a bit fiddly but not too bad to set up.

        • should work with tvheadend…..dunno what your using tho….

  • can you transfer saved tv files to usb after recording or are they stuck in the ps3?

    • +1

short answer no… long answer, read the link above, it can be done with some fiddling
      that link again - http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv

    • yes, change the region code, unlocks the ability to. I do not recommend it, i returned mine after the HDD corruption issues mentioned, freezing, and hang to delete all my recordings to get it to work again etc. Do NOT buy.

  • boy am I glad I grabbed a PlayTV back when Radio Rentals was clearing them for $20..

I didn't even know you could use it with your PC - might have to start using it!

  • Love my playtv best and most stable tuner on the market and I have purchased a large number from elcheapo units to top of the line and found them all to be pretty poor quality and very unreliable.

My Playtvs never missed recording tv. It died last week after many years of daily service and I went out and bought another off Gumtree new with the Bluray remote for $50

Can't recommend them enough, they work with Windows media player as well you just need to get Elgato drivers which I'd assume the wiki mentions and you are up and running in minutes.

  • grabbed….. even if I have a HD Homerun….

  • Just posting a update….. I finally received the playtv after some stuffing about with toll and have tested the unit on both Win 8 and my Linux/Openelec setup.

The Linux media center recognises it automatically due to the Dibcom drivers being already integrated into kernel and was relatively simple get running with Tvheadend as the back and frontend software.

The Windows 8 installation required the EyeTV Diversity drivers located here: http://www.elgato.com/en/eyetv/eyetv-diversity/support I went through the setup.exe, loaded the files and then plugged the unit in and pulled up the Device manager selected the SCEH-006(or something similar sounding :P )'updated' the driver with the non-HID .inf file and gave it a quick test in VLC player on CH 7.

P.S Sorry if this seems garbled I'm feeling very sleepy and tired. zzzzzz!
