I was just searching for some cheap airfares and found Malaysian Airlines to be the cheapest (I know there is a bit of cloud over the airlines, but could happen to any airlines)….

Example, Melbourne to Mumbai return was $867 (example leave 25-April and return 12-May). The next cheapest was $1000…a good $150 per ticket. In fact I'm seeing that other airlines rates are also down, previously for same dates, it was around $1200…so book quickly before rates go up again

Pretty sure on the "evidence" that is publicly available so far it is an aircraft problem. Whether that was a design flaw or a maintenance issue we may never find out - the aircraft remains could very well be lost in 7,000m of ocean depth. The 2009 Air France aircraft took 2 years and $50m to retrieve and that was when the searchers knew reasonably closely where it went down.

Very sad for all the families involved.

    • +1

it is more likely a pilot problem

    • +2

If it turns out to be a couple of hours south-west of WA, how does an aircraft with a problem fly for many hours after it changed course? And lose all its comms?

      • This is where the terrorist theories take hold, because 1 theory is that after they last signalled the control tower and turned their systems off, they went west instead of heading to china…

    • The pundits who are all saying its a flying machine failure are all guess who - Pilots!!!

They are protecting their own ground. If it turns out it was a pilot issue it would be a horrendous breach of trust and the whole profession would be put under a cloud.

      • +4

        cloud pun?

    • +3

"Australia requests cargo manifest of MH370 to help identify objects, which Malaysian authorities refuse, insisting that the documents are with the police, conducting investigations of their own"

Sounds like more of an operations issue if you ask me.

If there is a problem with the aircraft, Boeing will do anything to cover it up.

Not really…you'll get some great ocean views…

And I've heard that if one of the engines fail, the other engine is there to fly you to the crash site. Bargain!

it's not the airline guys, stop bashing it. it's the leaders who have f-all idea about whats happening at ground 0.

eg. i don't bash qantas because the top guy is a tool. majority of my experience with qantas has been good, due to awesome local employees.

    • "the top guy is a tool"…not that there's anything wrong with that.

      • feel free to tp aj's house and the bods that hired him.

the rest 90% that made up qantas shouldn't take the heat imo.

The price of tickets are plummeting!

Better snap up this deal before it vanishes.

    • If it is plummeting, why don't you wait? The next deal will be even better.

  • The last Malaysian Airlines flight I took had flies in the cabin. I mentioned it to the cabin crew who didnt care.

OMG how terrible? You had to be near a fly?

One time I caught a bus and there were some flies inside instead, I wrote a letter to the premier.

Everything's heading south at Malaysian Airlines

  • +4

The problem is not just the airline, the airport security is also a big concern. People can bring their own bottle water on board without been detected. I would not go there with any airline.

    • +10

People took their own water bottles on planes for over 50 years and there was never a problem.

    • +2

This rule is controlled by the arrival country.

Also if you catch a domestic flight in Australia you can bring on a water bottle. So mate, I would avoid flying Qantas, Virgin,Tiger or Jetstar.

      • +1

Certainly you guys did not get what I meant. They DID NOT detect the bottle water which is not supposed to pass the security check. The implication could mean other weapons may pass the security check as well.

        • Then don't use a water bottle as your example of a weapon then?

        • +3

I often put a bottle in my pocket to take on board and have never been picked up in any country. It isn't hard to do. I see your point, but really anyone could smuggle a plastic gun on board or disguise some object to make it look like a bomb that would be enough to make a pilot divert the aircraft. Its also widely accepted that a duty free bottle can do as much or more damage than most banned weapons. Most of these precautions don't have any real life value, they are more to appease the paranoid.

        • I think you're confused on what you can take through security.

You are allowed to take an empty plastic water bottle through security. I always take one through than refill it on the other side of security before I board.

        • you obviously haven't been to Merica lately. Full body scans for every flight. My sister got caught with bottles twice (once was orange juice and vodka, which they let her keep :| )

        • It was UNDETECTED.

        • If you're really worried about it then just go there next time and try and bring a real weapon on board, see if anything happens.

    • +1

People can bring their own bottle water on board

      OMG! Water!
Almost as bad as taking on glass bottles (easily broken to make a weapon) full of flammable liquid (e.g. OP Bundy)

This is still an unresolved probable tragedy involving people from several countries, including Australia. I hope none of their friends and relatives are members of OzB and happen to hear about (or see) the comments from some people on this page.

Some of it is really disappointing.

They say it is a return ticket.
    But is it?

    • +3

They charge you for the return but it is only one way.

  • I'm questioning the premise of the original post. One swallow doesn't make a summer. I just did a quick check and found the price wasn't anything special. It may be that as this saga bites deeper Malaysia will have to offer good prices to get customers back but I'm not seeing it yet.

    • Then you must have not been listening a few years ago when the Air France flight went missing over the Atlantic. Everybody assumed terrorism but it was just pilot error.

Who is moderating this thread? Perhaps you should have another look. My reason for negging the deal is as above. My other comment was also appriopriate. As for your "off topic" judgements - you're going to be a very busy boy shutting down every joke on every deal if this little effort is anything to go by. Pathetic.

Accidents happen and the way the Malaysian authorities have reacted for this incident is not ideal. However when it was revealed that smoking in the cockpit seems to be a normal thing by those SA girls which was allover the newspapers here, I am very concerned to get into Malaysian again. No matter how much other Malaysian on this forum feels on this incident. I too feel for the people who lost their lives or their relatives. We still don't know if they are dead or alive. What ever it is I am sure the airline could have disciplined their pilots much better. Let's assume that the pilots or the crew of the pilots don't complain on the smoking in the cockpit. However, when it has happened in such a confined space even the next people who get on board will know about it instantly. I never allow anyone to smoke in my car because I can smell it weeks after.
I am surprised if the authorities didn't know about these dangerous habits of the exact people who hold the maximum responsibility of the flight when it's in the air. When you are dealing with many hundreds of innocent lives you need to be more responsible.

Some one who hurt on this incident mentioned in here that no one should drive cars (toyota, BMW, etc) as they too face accidents. That's totally irrelevant as we don't get the service of a company to drive us in cars. If you look for deals on everything makes sense however you shouldn't risk your life in doing so.

I used to love flying Malaysian as I can easily rate their service was ahead of American airline or British Airways. However I expected much better from the people in their cockpits and control towers. I hope Malaysian will address their issues, rather than hiding them, which were revealed in this particular incident. Even after this we can not say if other air lines are safer than Malaysian as their issues were just not revealed. But we expect something openly happen in this case as we all know about the issues with MH now.

    • How does smoking in a cockpit suddenly make the entire airline unsafe? People used to smoke in planes back in the day, so I don't see how suddenly this changes everything and makes Malaysia Airlines the most unsafe airline. I also don't get your point about cars. If the tragedy turned out to be because of mechanical failure, then the comparison is valid. Sounds like you're making a big deal out of something that really isn't (smoking in a cockpit). I'm not saying it's OK to smoke in the plane, but I don't believe it's that big a deal.

  • there could be other systemic reasons why Malaysia might not have the same standards as say australia in transparency international's rankings which from my perception of their pre and post independence record of achievements might suggest some intrinsic tidak apa attitudes which affect their staffing strategies ina suboptimal way.

When I was younger I worked training pilots of various Asian nationalities for major airlines. I can say there IS a difference in the standards of pilot training, attitudes and aircraft maintenance. I also flew with a major airline in the Middle East and again the standards are very mixed. However Malaysian airlines is one of the best in Asia. They are a top quality airline and have no hesitation flying them. Some of the comments here are a bit paranoid and uneducated but I guess everyone, no matter how small minded, is entitled to an opinion.

I have to admit that I nearly wet myself laughing when I heard about the Asiana Flight 214 joke https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17GbGmDORwk

Still, I do think it is a bit early with this, there were Australians on board and most of the jokes aren't even funny.

    • +6

I'd say that would be the case for ANY nationality.

    • +2

Top quality they certainly are not if ratings and my experience is anything to go by. Good - yes, but a fair way off being anywhere near the top. The jokes were fine in the main. It's a sensitive issue but the one liners are not a reflection of how people feel about the tragedy, it's what people do (in a confined, if public area on the internet) to make light of a situation which makes us all feel helpless.

      • +1

Possumbly….Quote "It's a sensitive issue but the one liners are not a reflection of how people feel about the tragedy, it's what people do (in a confined, if public area on the internet) to make light of a situation which makes us all feel helpless."

Are you for real? I very much doubt any person that has made a joke here is so traumatised that they need to alleviate their feeling of helplessness by joking about the deaths of 239 people?

        Choose a different excuse!!

        • +2

Yes I'm real flesh and blood, thanks for asking Pete. You need to study human behaviour a bit more then buddy. What you might see as distasteful people "making jokes about the deaths of 239 people" is very well documented in the behavioural sciences. Doesn't mean any one of them is any less sympathetic than you or me to the situation which friends and families find themselves in.

        • +4

Funnily enough I am studying psychology and doing an assignment with ties to online posting and hiding behind anonymity. I understand your point but I'm sure you know this is a typical Ozb trait for one liners. People comment that they only look at a post to see what jokes were made. I know I do :-)

Regarding what you said, a simple way is to exaggerate the point. Would you get away with these kind of jokes if a Tsunami had wiped out 45 000 people in Sydney? Or how about if your daughter had been beheaded by terrorists? Would you make a joke about her losing her head to alleviate your feelings of helplessness?

It's everyones decision but it would be nice to see some respect and taste.

        • Taste you say??, theres a Red Rooster offer, it has chips too

Malaysia airforce let an unidentified aircraft fly over their air space is a joke, if they ever sent a jet to have a look, it won't be a tragic ending.

  • I am not sure the ticket is one way or return?

My colleague told me that he will not fly with Malaysian Airlines any more in this whole life.

Not about the plane, about the attitude. Lots of secrets to hide.

    • Are you gonna fly over Europe ? Yes ? Why ?

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Cberlingen_mid-air_collisi…

Next time you are flying over Europe, pray for not being sent by a Swiss air-traffic controller on a suisidal collision course with another plane. Cause air traffic controllers won't get any punishment for that.

  • +1

I would hazard a guess and say any airline operating large boeing or airbus aircraft is safer than travelling by car. With that logic in mind if I am happy to get in a car at all I should and do pick the cheapest flights possible - regardless of airline or safety record.

    • good luck

  • I wouldn't miss the chance if I am going to that area.

Air travel is the safest way to travel by far backed up by stats.

and as for the missing plane, ask NSA / CIA about it.

  • buy this if you lucky you might dissapear

I think Australia should cancel all the stealth joint strike aircraft deal with Lockheed martin and order a bunch of commercial Boeing's .

I flew out from the Malaysian LCC with AirAsia a few days before the Malaysian Air plane went missing.
I felt rather uneasy and I remember thinking to myself how easy it would be for terrorists or criminals to smuggle anything aboard. The security was a joke.
For example, I cleared the security checkpoint then while waiting for my plane I went back out again to the toilets. They let me back in again without checking me. I could have gone out and picked up explosives or anything.
Also I felt that being a white guy with blue eyes etc I received less attention from security personnel. They were concentrating on darker Arab looking people, scanning their passports to check if they were fake etc. I basically waltzed in passed smiling guards…

    • +1

That's the sad case everywhere. You are judged based on your appearance (especially how you are born) but not based on your actions. Agree that it's hard to see the actions in short period but then why should you judge people based on the appearance. I know as a fact in my home country it was the same when there was a war but after investigation of most tragedies, all good looking people with high ranks have transported all the explosives. But the security were harassing all the innocent people looking for bombs :)

I personally have been caught to the random check every single time in the air port queues in US may be more than 15 times. I cannot remember any time I didn't get picked for the random check. But I was a well paid IT architect second largest bank in US and always flying with my family. Regardless I've never had done anything wrong to others and even to my self by smoking or drinking alcohol, I get picked for the security checks. It's a funny world.

    • +1

I flew out of LCC the same exact day as MH370 disappeared, although it wasn't news to me yet. Security was on paranoid mode. A stark contrast from the 10 days before when security was a major joke. I accidentally walked around the screening area looking for my gate and avoided it altogether.
No one noticed or gave a sh!t.

      • Can confirm. Travelled out from KLCC few days before the incident.

  • I dont think this is a deal, the airline could be unsafe for consumption
