    Anything on a 15"?

What's the battery life on this thing?

    • +2

Sorry, nothing in 15" that is vastly on sale at the moment.

Battery life is reported at a maximum theoretical of approximately 5 1/2 hours. However realistic battery life and with this full i7-4700MQ processor should give around 4 hours.

      • what about on max load? ie. gaming

btw this is an aswesome deal

i bought my uncle a 17" fhd from you guys 3 years ago and its still powering on. he loves it

        • I imagine full load gaming would probably be under 2hrs, should plug in when doing something intense on a laptop.

  • +1

    Wow. What a steal.

Edit: Just wondering, what are the build times and delivery dates if I make an order right now? Last time I bought through you, it was about a 3 week wait on my system.

    • Still around 15 business days, give or take.

    • +7

Not hard to add another hdd (ie a 240gb SSD from amazon) or replace the Msata with a bigger one (ie a 240/480/1tb one)

    • +15

Well, instead of slugging it with another hard drive (at a higher price to you), we have left that up to you to choose. Not everyone needs the extra drive and some like to add their own.

    • -1

negged hard but I was pointing out a valid point to non-gamers or people potentially buying this computer for others, 128gb would require you uninstalling games to install others, just because upgrades are available is not the point

      • +2

128GB SSD is for those who play GoG specials from the '98.

        I have a 128GB just for Win7.

All that aside, any real gamer is likely to have a few new games on the go. Some ppl are just fast on the "thumbs down" button.

        • I was fast on the thumbs down button because it's pretty clear (and has now been explicitly outlined) why it has a 128GB SSD. If it came with a bigger SSD/HDD then it would be more expensive overall, and you would get less customisability.

        • -1

By that logic we should put 5ltr petrol tanks on our cars by standard and have the option to increase the size incrementally at discetion by how far you need to drive, because that would be cheaper? My point was also pretty clear, 128gb isnt enough for a gaming laptop and is misleading to non-gamers or parents buying for their children when shown here that it might be sufficient for gaming use. My installed games folder on my computer is 696gb alone… Customisability is all well and good, because for gaming use you would NEED more space, thus adding to the cost, before or after the fact.

        • +6

That is a good idea about the car tanks… you should get it patented.

Lets pervert logic again, they should put in a 4TB SSD (http://www.anandtech.com/show/5322/oczs-4tb-35-chiron-ssd) drive that costs a fortune just so you can install your 680 GB of games otherwise it is obviously not a gaming laptop.

Next time how about you bother to actually open the link and see that you can have multiple HDDs installed and they offer them on the bloody page too.

        • …trying to fit titanfall on it are we :P

        • +2

I have a Qosmio F60 with i7, 4GB memory, and 330M graphics. It still plays the latest games, in fact the only thing I've had to upgrade was the HDD. It now has a 256GB SSD, perfect for a gaming laptop running Win7.

By your line of thought they should have also started with 1GB of memory, maybe no USB3.0 since it's not required for gaming.

I personally would not neg this deal, nor would I neg someone who suggested they use more/less ram, greater/smaller SSD. A Gaming computer is a system DEDICATED to gaming, which means it needs to hold all the games a person is playing. For some of us that's TitanFall, The Witcher, MWO, Firefall, ESO, Defiance, etc. I was unable to fit ESO, The Witcher 2 and TitanFall onto a 128GB driver with Win7 Ultimate.

The point I'm making is this; Sk3iron's comment was not offensive or derogatory, it simply a statement about what he/she expects in a machine tagged as "Gaming Laptop". There was no real reason to neg it.

    • It's not a 128GB hdd, it's a 128gb msata ssd which means the HDD bay is left empty for you to put one of any size that you want in.

  • +2

    certainly looks like a steal

  • Bloody hell, that looks alright! If only I had the cash right now haha.

  • i never heard this brand Horize …any good?

    • They are Clevo builds, and Horize is the brand name they sell them as.

    • It's a generic brand, meant to be alright

    • It's OK, build not as tough or durable as mainstream brands. Battery longevity is poor. After 1 year the battery lasts 30min, while my older laptop after 3yrs still lasts 2hrs.

      • +1

Completely disagree. had my clevo for over 2 years now, its going 100% perfect. Its aged better then any other brand ive bought, including dell, acer, samsung and asus.

Build quality is god like for the things that matter, then cooling on it is the best I've had on a laptop, the screen is again best ive seen on a laptop. Design is great because its much easier to swap out parts on compared to any other laptop ive owned.

Clevo are easily the leaders in customability and overall design for the prices they sell at, of all laptop brands world wide.

Not sure what model you have, but my clevo is way more tough and durable compared to other big brands like asus or samsung.

Dunno what happened to your battery, mine is fine after 2 years.

  • Great price. Obviously the reason these are on sale is that the graphics is the previous version. 860m has recently replaced the 765m (in this one) and provides a significant performance boost.

    • Bite the bullet or wait for the 860M? Your opinion?

    • +3

That is correct, the newer model is coming around 4 weeks away. Although you would be looking at approximately $1499 for the like-for-like model with same spec but with GTX860m. I am unsure as to how much faster the new card will be as it is a lower clocked Maxwell chip. It's going to get confusing as there is supposedly 3 variants of the GTX860M. One with higher cores, one with lower and one with Kepler.

Edit: I should point out that these may contain different options than the model being sold here so pay attention :)

        • +5

Hi, I'm not doubting that the W230SS is going to be faster. But be careful, I was mostly pointing out that there will be large variations in benchmarks for the new range of GTX860M.

However, the review from the original W230ST linked above is from August last year on older nVidia drivers, it has only an i7-4702 (lower performance) vs the i7-4810mq in the W230SS, half the RAM etc.

In my experience and i've been doing this a long time, I doubt there would be more than a 15% variation in graphics speed between the two, like-for-like.

        • +1

Unless a person has a large Trust Fund or disgustingly wealthy parents, purchasing a unit just for the 860 isn't worth it. Especially when there's a deal this good.

        • You've convinced me. Will give this a go then. Thanks!

      • When do you get the 880M ?

  • +16

Fantastic honest feedback from the seller.

  • Got this a few months ago. Good for gaming. Although I find it stutters sometimes..not sure why, but it's nothing serious. Would recommend

    • +4

Maybe try some nVidia driver updates. If you can't work it out, send us through an enquiry and i'll get a tech to help you out on it.

      • It's just sometimes when I play Dota2. I think it might have something to do with the Nvidia drivers that constantly update, Windows 8.1, flux (when flux changed my lighting it slows down for a few seconds), the heat this laptop produces as a gaming laptop, and Wi-Fi. Rebooting seems to fix it most of the time. Sometimes the Windows login screen will load before the graphics card renders everything smoothly. Could it just be Nvidia then? Also, I wonder how the Nvidia graphics and Intel graphics interact with the computer. How can I be sure that Nvidia is primary, not Intel? Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with this laptop and your service!

  • looks good, but if it came with 16GB ram you would have these these flying off the shelf to the make way for the new nvidia GTX860 model.

    • +7

Why on earth would you need 16gb of ram as a standard build? What are you doing that required 16gb of ram?

      • +4

He wants to watch multiple pr0n movies at once ;p

        • …..pssst….(looks left and right) Does that work, this multiple pr0n thing……? :P

      • +1

What are you doing that required 16gb of ram?

        Work?

AutoCAD/Revit, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, 3dsmax, Maya, Photoshop, any type of virtualisation software (VMWare, VirtualBox), MatLab, video transcoders; all of those applications will benefit greatly from 16GB of RAM for intensive usage.

        • +5

AutoCAD/Revit, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, 3dsmax, Maya, Photoshop, any type of virtualisation software (VMWare, VirtualBox), MatLab, video transcoders

This laptop is marketed, and sold as, a gaming laptop. None of those things are gaming. It's like buying a Hyundai and saying it would sell better if it had a Ferrari engine in it because then you could use it for track days. It's a totally useless comment.

        • +4

Solidworks ….. I hear ya buddy.

Not too mention: What gamer runs low memory on their rig? You'd need a massive pagefile, and then it's not really a gaming computer.

        • +1

For serious gamers they would have bought a desktop or those 15.6" / 17.3" laptop with SLI graphics.

I am actually in the market of this kind of laptop — W230ST or Gigabyte P34G — where I need a convenient & portable business laptop with enough grunt & memory to "get work done", and just sufficient graphics power to play my ever-accumulating Steam library due to all those cheap games spotted on OzBargain…

I don't need a Ferrari, but happy to buy an AMG Estate that can go fast but also capable of many other things.

        • +2

This laptop is marketed, and sold as, a gaming laptop. None of those things are gaming.

You're acting as if arbitrary marketing categories invented by executives matter in the real world sunshine.
Yes, buy 3 computers instead of having one, solid, all-rounder; brilliant advice Johnno.

At work we use an ASUS ROG G750JX "gaming" laptop (gasp, amazingly it hasn't blown up yet) for running AutoCAD/Revit training at seminars. That has an i7 4700HQ and 16GB of RAM and it blows away our HP Z400 workstations with Xeons in them.

This is a high performance laptop, period. It can reasonably do gaming or productive tasks; just because you have no experience with those applications doesn't mean you can write off this laptop's productive potential.

To use your stupendous car analogy, you can take a V12 diesel Audi Q7 SUV and watch it blow away 2-door coupes like the 370Z, BMW M3, Porsche 911 'till the cows come home.

I guess Audi didn't get the memo that a product marketed primarily for one purpose can't be good at anything else.

It's like buying a Hyundai and saying it would sell better if it had a Ferrari engine in it because then you could use it for track days. It's a totally useless comment.

          Crickets chirping

        • +1

Amar, I know the above is not directed at me but my question was to him what he was using 16gb of ram for, not what you use it for.

You may need 16gb of ram, but most people do not. Saying that 16gb of ram will make them fly off the shelves may be true, but that is because most people just want to go 1 number high to stroke their e-peen without having any idea what RAM actually does.

Besides all of this, I havent heard of any other 1080 monitors on 13-15inch notebooks, 16 gig of ram, a gtx765, and an 17 quad core haswell cpu that sell for anywhere near this price.

Yes 16gb ram would make this fly off the shelves, but so would upgrading the gpu to an 860m, changing the hard drive to twin 1tb ssd's and changing the monitor to a 4k touch screen.

Comparing the Hyundai to a Ferrari is a valid comparison in this situation, just based on the price difference between this, and buying a 17inch ROG which YOU are comparing it to.

        • Not really the best analogy there, mate. Gaming rigs are made for performance and that performance in gaming tends to also be seen in programs where rendering is involved. Its like getting a Ferrari for having a Ferrari and then also being able to take it to the track.

        • @Amar89:

You're acting as if arbitrary marketing categories invented by executives matter in the real world sunshine.

The thing is, it's not being used arbitrarily in this case. Out of the box, this laptop is pretty good for gaming and therefore I think it's appropriate that it's sold as a "gaming laptop". With a bit more RAM, like you said, it would be good for all of those things you mentioned. And with a couple of extra petabytes of storage under the hood it could run Google's servers. It's just not relevant.

Yes, buy 3 computers instead of having one, solid, all-rounder; brilliant advice Johnno.

I actually never said that. I never even came close to saying that. I have an all-rounder desktop at home and a basic laptop for portable work. That's all I need and pretty much what most people need. What I was saying, is that this laptop is not, in its current state, the "all-rounder" you seem to think it should be, when it's not even claiming to be.

          @abbztract:

Not really the best analogy there, mate. Gaming rigs are made for performance and that performance in gaming tends to also be seen in programs where rendering is involved.

This is not even correct. The hardware requirements for CAD/video/etc rendering and gaming are very different.

Its like getting a Ferrari for having a Ferrari and then also being able to take it to the track.

Are you saying this laptop is the Ferrari of the portable computer world?

        • 16 gigs does very little to anything, most programs struggle to make use of 4-8gigs

        • -1

No. He saying it's like buying a Ferrari to drive at 320km/s on open roads only to find out it's limit is 110km/s because it's actually made in India.

Or, since ewe all luv using cars, it's like a Toyota Landcruiser vs. a Great Wall V200. Both are built specifically as 4x4, but only one would last a day in the Ozzie Outback ….. otherwise there'd be more farms or stations with High Wall's.

        • @Ebany:

Your analogies make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

He saying it's like buying a Ferrari to drive at 320km/s on open roads only to find out it's limit is 110km/s

Actually the issue at hand is more like someone buying a car that was advertised to only go 110km/h, and being disappointed that it didn't go 320km/h. So you're wrong there.

it's like a Toyota Landcruiser vs. a Great Wall V200.

You know a Landcruiser is literally more than three times the price of a V200 right? So basically you're implying that you should expect this $1200 laptop to perform to the same level as a $3600 laptop? What are you on about!?

        • 16GB does a heap for a gaming system, even with a x86 o/s. First and foremost, you can reduce your pagefile. Second, it helps a heap if you run games windowed, or like me, run 4 monitors and a couple of games at once.

        • wow, your truly something special. Let me try once more though I feel it's a waste of my time.

          *The Ferrari scenario

He's saying it's like purchasing a vehicle advertised as a Super Car (generic fast Vehilce = Gaming Rig) only to find it's small exhaust ( Tiny 1/2 inch exhaust = 128GB SSD) limits it's speed ( slow speed = computer wont install more than Titanfall and OS) slow the vihicle isn't really a Super Car, it's simply a cosmetically improved car slightly quicker than most basic models.

          *The 4X4 scenario.

So, without needing to explain, my 8yo nephew understood what this example signified.

I said "Both are built specifically as 4x4". It's a conceptual idea meant to imply that calling something a 4x4 (or a Gaming Rig) doesn't mean it mean it'll perform like a 4x4 (or Gaming Rig).

Now I hoped to avoid saying this as I like the Rep and LBO do some great deals, including this one, but you seem to be having trouble understanding what Sk3iron was getting at.

This is not a Gaming Rig! A Gaming Rig is a powerful machine made to perform well under the strain of running games like TitanFall on Max settings. No real gamer would EVER purchase a machine like this for gaming without doing some serious changes.

Now I realise you know nothing about gaming machines, in fact you seem to have no idea about what a powerful computer is or how it's used, so I've tried to be a little clearer without appearing offensive (though it's 4am and well past my bedtime).

        • I have a better idea of what you were getting at now that you've fleshed out your argument. It's hardly my fault that I didn't understand what you were saying before.

In saying this, I still don't agree. This is a $1200 laptop. If you were paying this sort of money for a desktop then you should expect far more - however it's not a desktop. This is an entry level gaming laptop. It will play most things on reasonable settings, but it wont, and shouldn't be expected to, play Titanfall on Ultra at 120FPS or do complex raytracing/rendering in 3ds Max.

Now I realise you know nothing about gaming machines, in fact you seem to have no idea about what a powerful computer is or how it's used, so I've tried to be a little clearer without appearing offensive

I have built dozens of computers over the last 15 years - including many gaming computers for myself - so I like to think I have some idea (which I do, frankly). You have unfortunately failed at not appearing offensive, but I'll chalk that up to it being the wee hours of the morning. Hope you have a lovely day :)

  • ive just been shopping for a similar laptop
the price drop is because the new w230ss

  • Virtualization !!! :-) a good compact mobile network lab for uni and doing IT certs. If it had 16GB I would probably pull the trigger and buy one.

    • +$129 for 16GB RAM. Or add it yourself, it doesn't void the warranty.

    • No uni course would require the demands of this laptop unless you're looking to render large video files or something.

Pretty much every laptop with an i3 and newer can do virtualization without difficulty.

      • +1

I have a newish Celeron with 16gb ram running esxi and a few 2003 r2 server DR instances in Malaysia (because they are too stingy to provision properly). It runs… Barely.

  • +2

whats the lead time on these models? if I place an order today would I get it by the end of the week in Brisbane? or is there a 1 week + build time?

    • The build time is 15 business days. If you require it more urgently we may be able to assist. It would be worth sending an enquiry through on the website and we can push it out faster (where possible, parts etc.).

        • +10

It's a custom built laptop. Do you think it magically assembles itself? It takes time to assemble and test the laptops, especially for a busy shop.

They've been in business for years.

        • -8

3 weeks, you are kidding me right? Do they assemble the monitor as well? It's a barebones system… a few hours and done deal.

        • +11

Thy name is not thy nature.

        • +2

Urm there's obviously a reason why you're being negged hard.

        • I got a Clevo barebones system last year and ended up procuring all the additional components myself. Built it in a few hours, installed OS and the Clevo was running by the end of the day.
Nowhere in the OP's listing does it say that the product is not available for immediate pick up and that instead it takes 3 weeks to build, after which delivery etc.. so you will get it within 4 weeks. That's a long time to wait for a laptop.
Most likely Logical is being negged by noobs that have never built a laptop before.

        • Noting the lead time for this laptop per Affordable laptops.com.au: When your order is approved to submit through to Metabox you need to allow 5 business days (1 week) for your order to go through the build queue and be fully built up and tested prior to your order being ready.

As such a 3 week build time is quite excessive!

        • +2

I negged him and that wasnt why.

He suggested this company which has been on OzB for a long time and served many ozbargainers, was just trying to get our money and will close down before it is sent out.

Also his second comment, it's because he is carrying on like an ass. I didn't neg that one though.

        • -1

Don't know if the comment suggests that they are taking money and will close down, all it does is compare to Kogan who sell TV's and you gotta wait a long time to get them, and also that business all across Australia are closing down regularly, so a 3 week wait can be a bit painful/risky. Don't know about you Modokun, but I love to get my gadgets quickly after making the payment. Also, Logical was correct, other places can build in 5 days (1 week), so a 3 week period is very excessive… and there is no real reason for this… unless they are doing a Kogan.. ship it in using your funds, then assemble at their premises and then get it to you after 3 weeks.

        • +1

I negged him for two reasons - for what Modokun basically said, and while 3 weeks is still a pretty long time I'll admit (more than I'm willing to wait that's for sure), it's hardly taking a 'going out of business' risk.

Also, if you've ever run a business, you obviously can't compare building ONE laptop to building multiple orders and doing all that other stuff that you know… is required to run a business.

It's not like they're a multi million dollar company like Dell with a huge automated assembly like that allows them to churn out website orders in a jiffy.

And yes I've built a laptop and several desktops before.

        • +2

Not when our return rate is miraculously low!

  • Brillian, was trying to find your site since monday this week.

Hey would this run games like Skyrim well? I am new to PC gaming and have only ever used consoles.

    • Welcome to PC gaming, where every single fps game is much better using a mouse for aiming instead of a silly joystick.

      • Welcome to 2014, Where we don't use Commodore/Amiga/Atari 'Joysticks' anymore……j/k :)

    • Yes it would. Also, if your a Skyrim fan and intend on playing ESO (Elder Scrolls Online), this would be perfect.

  • Great deal. I previously requested this model and now I am stuck.

I am now also waiting for Gigabyte P34G v2 with GTX 860m, 14" but thinner and lighter. Yes would be pricer, but probably better equipped (v1 at $1699 comes with 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD & Windows license, VGA port).

  • my laptop just broke. Tempting!

    • -4

3 weeks build time plus delivery time… if you can wait 4 weeks then it is a good price saving you around $150.

      • you not just saving 150 bucks, you gettin a laptop from one of the best laptop companies in the, clevo (imo)

  • Excellent specs, HD screen is a plus. Only issues are noise and a bit of heat. A 7200rpm HDD will increase noise and battery consumption. Nevertheless, for gaming and portability this is a winner.

    • +1

It's an optional addon, its just a recommendation from the seller. It only comes with the 128gb SSD

  • It is lighter than razor blade. And it is 1.4k less than Razor blade 14. Its great buy. Unfortunately I have already wasted my $$$ on another Gaming laptop and will have to miss such a good deal.

  • Just wondering some reviewers on youtube have talked about a possible loud fan issue when just idling, does this version have an updated fan profile or does it have to be undervolted to fix this issue?

    • Fan is loud but can't do much about it. It's the Nvidia graphics I think

  • The 4700mq runs hot, my 17" has 2 fans and lots of space for cooling, single fan thin builds will need to work hard.

    great price.

If I was in the market for a new laptop I would snap this one up in a heartbeat.

Trying to find an excuse to buy it actually.

Kinda hoping that I don't, or that I do. I don't know. Ahhh!

  • I'm keen on new ultra notes. Something that has long bat life, 750m-760m should do. 14+ screen 15.6 preferred. Battery should be 6+ hours AND LIGHT. I was blown away at your previous ultranotes bring them back!

      14 inch FHD (with upgrade),i7 processor, 8GB ram,gt 745m, 120GB SSD, 1.8kg
Not sure about battery life though.
Edit: says 12 hr battery life on site

      • I got this one from logicalblueone and the battery lasts me a bit over 4 hours. Nothing intense though.

Great laptop, only gripe is a fair bit of screen bleeding but it's only really noticeable om a black background.

        • 4 cell bat, for 1k+ LogicalBlue had their ultranote for $999.

        • We have the W650SJ coming in, about 10 days away.

We have the cheaper W550SU with the upgraded battery and haswell @ $999.

In the future we will be having a deal on the older W550EU models, that might be a month away or so. But if you are after a cheap 15.6" FHD notebook in might be worth looking at.

  • Must say I bought a very similar model to this half a year ago with biger screen size, no problems except a small piece broke off from the casing but thats super minor. I am a very happy customer for the quality and price of the machine as well as a + for customer service.

  • I'm not very savvy with the prices these days. Any recommended options or upgrades?

    • You want HDD secondary drive and the extended warranty

  • Hey Rep,

Curious about the difference between the three year warranties.
The extra $80 means you'll send a courier instead of me having to send it back?

    Thanks in advance.
