VPN.sh £1 Per Year Offer

940

Just got an email from VPN.sh. They are offering £1/year packages for the next 11 hours, before upping the price to £2/year. It includes 150GB of bandwidth per year and they have 27 locations including Australia, USA and UK.

From the email:

At VPN.sh we're once again offering our £1/year packages. As before, this works on a basis of "the quicker you order, the less you pay", so if you wish to add further services, it's best to get in early!

As per usual, you get access to all of our 27 locations, and this allows 150GB of bandwidth per year. This expires on 23rd May 2014.

The offer post itself can be found here.

Please feel free to share this link with friends, family, deal communities and voucher websites if you wish to.

Thanks, and we hope you continue to enjoy the service!

Please note that it will only be £1/year for the next 11 hours until 9AM tomorrow. After that it goes up to £2.

I've been using their service with the Australian IP for a month from this previous deal, and no problems so far.

I can use this to by pass the Australian block on http://thepiratebay.se ?

    • +6

      ??

Is not blocked, well not at my end.

    • +1

      It's blocked?

    • +3

As far as I'm aware, none of our locations have blocked access to ThePirateBay.se

If you wish to bypass the block to the website, that's fine, but we'd appreciate you switching the VPN back off once the torrent starts downloading. This will also help to prevent you using all of your bandwidth allowance with us!

    • +2

Its unlikely you will ever need a VPN.

There are like 500 mirrors for TPB. They won't block them all.

      • +1

That, or a simple DNS change to do the trick.

I'm 99.99999% confident that even when it's blocked, that no paid service (VPN) will be needed to access TPB.

Still useful to have a VPN if the govt starts prosecuting people for downloading.

        • -1

Its not access to the torrent file that would get you prosecuted, it's the acutal running of a torrent client that does the sharing, and if 150 gig will do you for a year then you are doing it wrong! Until i get a warning or the like I wont be using any vpn, and if I do, it will be 200gb per month.

  • Damn, the country I want is not in the package.

    Good price though.

    • Which country are you needing? We may be able to add it at some stage during the offer. Any future locations that we add will be available to all current clients, meaning if you purchased this offer and then we add the country that you want, you'll still be able to access it.

      • -2

Russia isnt on the list :/

        • +4

We could probably get Russia added at some point during this offer. Cannot 100% guarantee it, but it's fairly likely I can piece something together.

      • Hi Liam, Could you add China or/and Hongkong? Thank you!

  • You got in just before me.

Works OK for me, but wasn't really fast enough for iPlayer when I tried.

    • Unfortunately the further you are from a location, the lower your speed will be, and obviously the UK is some distance from AU! Feel free to open a support ticket, and I'll provide some details for you to test other UK locations that we could potentially add to see if streaming would be any better for you.

      • +1

At the moment it's not an issue - iplayer was just a good way of testing if it worked and what the bandwidth might practically look like (DNS approaches work at the moment and make more sense). It's more of a backstop against future stupid geoblocking.

Mind, from your perspective a sensible geounblocking DNS service targeted at TV/movie services would make sense (lower bandwidth demands).

        • +3

Fair enough. Yeah, that's something I've been considering looking into and offering at some stage. I'll do some more research over the next few days and then if it looks fairly viable, then I'll get something set up. Obviously something in Australia or New Zealand would be ideal, but I'll see what I can piece together.

Is this something you'd be willing to pay for? Others reading this, would you pay for a higher speed service located in Australia or nearby, but that geounblocks services such as iPlayer, Netflix etc.? It wouldn't be a full VPN service, as it'd use DNS - so you wouldn't get the benefits of encryption and compatibility across operating systems.

        • +1

Potentially, although the free Hola/Mediahint services mean the cost front has to be limited.

Issue usually is you want to use something like Roku, WDTV, etc. to plug into a TV and seamlessly provide UK or US TV catchup/movie services, whilst everything else stays the same. Most services are techie, and focus on changing the DNS for all connections (which is a pain).

Ideal would be able to buy something like the NowTV box from the UK and hook it in in Australia with minimal hassle. Lots of call for such solutions, since Aus TV is so appallingly bad…

        • Sure, we'd make sure the cost isn't anything crazy or unaffordable. Being affordable is something I really like to push. I'll throw some ideas around to see what the best possible implementation would be for a situation such as this, and then attempt to gain some feedback.

I didn't realise Aus TV had a reputation for being poor (apologies, I'm in the UK), so I'll look into options similar to a NowTV box that could be used with our VPN services, and potentially gain some presence for a solution that "works out of the box" for accessing location-locked content in Australia.

        • +1

I'm definitely interested in paying for a dns service like this as long as youre competitive/cheaper than similar services.

        • I think you;d find a lot of demand in the Australian market for anything that enabled viewing of location locked "catchup" services or netflix/hulu etc..

        • Thanks for this. I'll be looking into this thoroughly over the next few days. Do you think something similar to a Roku/NowTV or other hardware device would be preferable over a software solution?

Just trying to gauge where the most interest would come: Either from a HDMI enabled device to go straight into the TV - or a software solution to use on a computer.

        • +1

          Quick runthrough of the issues:

          • devices like chromecast have their own inbuilt DNS address, making them difficult to get to work at all (since you can't set them up at all and they go off to 8.8.8.8)

          • devices like Roku allow you to setup DNS, but tie your account to the DNS/location. Usually don't allow proxy.

          • smart TVs are similar, and sometimes only have the apps associated with the region they were sold in (making iplayer difficult).

          • PCs can use proxy pac files, which makes it much easier, but most other devices can't - and nobody wants to watch TV on their PC.

Easiest way to see the issues is to see the setup instructions on the other VPN/DNS provider sites.

What's almost needed is a hard, transparent, proxy that intercepts DNS requests, redirects to different service when needed (eg THAT device gets THIS DNS) that provides addresses taking into account the desire to tunnel some requests to other regions. This could be a physical device, or a software one, but has the problem that the router, via dynamic IP allocation, etc. usually sets the DNS on the device - hence the need to intercept somehow.

I've looked for a software solution, but with no success so far. Although it makes sense, and I'm sure should be possible, it doesn't seem to be easy to find.

          It's a pain.

what after 150GB? will it be stopped working?
I dont think 150GB will last longer than 2 months considering if anyone is heavy user of Netflix/Hulu.

    • I too would like to know what happens when one reaches the cap

    • +1

I use hulu and netflix constantly daily. I'd use 100gb within the month

    • +2

      You can grab 500GB for £5.50/year: https://www.vpn.sh/clients/cart.php?a=add&pid=28

If you'd need more, feel free to drop me an email on [email protected] and we can sort something out.

      • Ah damn, I noticed this after buying the £1/year plan.

        • +5

Feel free to open a support ticket (https://www.vpn.sh/clients) and I'll be able to invoice you the 500GB account for £4.50 and just remove the initial £1/year order for you :).

        • +1

Well, it looks like it is cheaper to pay for 4 £1/year plans and get 600GB, rather than to to pay £5 for 500GB :)

        • +1

This is true, however generally speaking we limit users to 2 accounts if ordering in one go. Plus you'd have to keep on top of the data limit for each account before switching over at the end of the limit. Keeps things a little tidier on our side if everything is in one account too.

        • -2

or you could just do better pricing

  • +2

Is that true Hulu start blocking VPN? What's about your VPN?

    • +3

As far as I'm aware, the vast majority of our USA locations are still unblocked by Hulu, and I don't think that's changing anytime soon. Hulu do have plans to attempt to block VPN providers IP addresses, however they are mainly targeting the larger VPN providers, and smaller companies such as VPN.sh aren't so much of an issue and we're much further down Hulu's "pecking order" as it were.

Please rest assured that if on the rare chance we end up being completely unable to get access to Hulu on our USA locations, we'll simply add more and/or come up with an alternate solution to gain access.

  • i've been using tunnelbear to buy and download media content from the us playstation store. unblock.us/getflix is not enough to be able to purchase/download movies from the us psn.
will this work the same as tunnelbear?
i just turn on a proxy + tunnelbear on my pc, then set my pc as the proxy in my playstation and it works
    cheers,
    Ben

    • +1

I'm not familiar with accessing content from the Playstation store, however feel free to order an account and if you can't gain access, just open a support ticket referencing this post and I'll provide a refund.

      • Hi Rep,
I cant seem to order, when it created me an account, then emptied my cart
I've logged in again, then clicked on the promo link
the item is in my car, i got to checkout then it says login details incorrect

        • Please try resetting your password here: https://www.vpn.sh/clients/pwreset.php

It may be that the account never got to the stage of creation, so you may have to enter your details again. Feel free to drop me an email on [email protected] if any other issues pop up regarding your order.

        • +1

thanks resetting the password has fixed it up, i can checkout/pay invoices now

  • Can I buy more than 1 year at 1£/year ?

    • +3

Sure, just open a support ticket after making the first order and we'll send over an invoice. Tickets can be opened here: https://www.vpn.sh/clients/

      • +1

Thanks rep, going to do the same.

  • +1

Ha accidentally order the 500gb for 5.5 and the 150 for 1 (had them both in cart). Not a big VPN user but it is good for the occasional netflix / hulu / game purchase. Figure this will be easier and quicker than the free VPN's I normally use.

  • Hmm…no hong kong…means no TVB dramas….not for me.

    • +5

We can have Hong Kong added within the next week or so.

      • Any servers will be added from China?

        • It's unlikely we'll add China at any time soon, as unfortunately there isn't anything we can add there that will be up to the network speeds that our customers come to expect from our service. If an option becomes available for us, we'll be sure to add it though.

        • +1

Thank you! Hong Kong is fine for now. I have tried to open a support ticket for 3 years subscription. How long it will take to be resolved?

        • +2

Please add Hong Kong as well as that would be extremely useful!

        • +1

Please add Hong Kong as well as that would be extremely useful! x2!!

    • What site do you use for these, can you get them direct from tvb.com? My wife would love to know.

  • Can I share my account to different people? I mean I'd like to share the vpn account to my cousin. He's in different house with different IP address.

    • +1

Unfortunately this isn't something we encourage. The main reason being that having multiple people accessing the same account can get pretty messy if we have to cancel the account for any reason. You're more than welcome to share the link with your cousin though :)

      • +1

But is the account locked to one single IP? I want to use it on my phone as well.

        • +1

No, you can access the account from anywhere.

  • Where can I find a list of locations?

  • do you only offer paypal as payment? if so does anyone know if paypal charge fees to pay in pounds (currency fee from AUD$)? if so howmuch

    • We also accept Bitcoin. As far as I'm aware, PayPal do not charge any fees to convert from AUD to GBP. I've just checked PayPal's rates and it should come out at around $1.87 AUD at their current conversion.

    • +1

PayPal doesn't charge a fee for the buyer, but they have bad currency conversion rates. It's not too bad, and should come to about $1.87AUD after their conversion.

    • +2

      I just bought 1 year. 1£ = 1.88 AUD

      • Thanks for the clarification on conversion rate.

  • Can you choose when to use the VPN data? Can I still access Australian sites without using the VPN so as to not use up the 150gb data on things I can already do?

    • +1

When you want to use vpn, just login using openvpn client.
If you don't want to use vpn, you just disconnect from openvpn.

    • As superuser mentioned, simply disconnect from the VPN when accessing local content to keep your usage down :).

  • +3

Do you log connections etc that would allow us to be traced?
E.g. how hma vpn helped govt?

    • Logs are not kept. Having said that, we do block some torrenting services etc. from being accessed from our servers. At the end of the day, our bandwidth limits are there for a reason anyway, and illegally downloading material isn't really worth doing on our plans. Our TOS is under revision, so please take the section mentioning warez/torrents with a pinch of salt.

      • You mean all torrents in ? Some places like Humble offer torrents as an option to download purchased drm free games

        • Unfortunately there's no way for us to determine what's legal versus what's illegal with torrents. As far as I'm aware, the Humble Bundle isn't locked to specific locations though, so a home connection should suffice so long as you're comfortable with putting the download straight through your normal connection.

  • Which USA sever would you recommend when watching Hulu & Netflix

    • +3

i've found in the past that west coast servers are faster

  • I've got issues setting up and redeeming things like Ultra Violet from the US and the UK, so if this gets around the problem, could be worthwhile. Stopping Amazon insist I buy through AUS would be handy as well.

  • It's normally only 2 pound anyway, it's a dirt cheap service which caught me out in the past with a 1GBP deal. Useless service which doesn't work more often than not.

    • Actually 150GB is even less than the 2GBP offer which gives you 240Gb a year (assuming the service was reliable enough to use that much).

      • Our service is normally £22 per year (or £2/month). We sometimes run other offers, but our official website pricing starts at £2 per month, or £22 when paid yearly. You referenced a previous offer of ours - sometimes a supermarket may have some chocolate on 30% off. Sometimes they may have it on 50% off. You cannot expect every offer to be exactly the same.

        • -1

OK 22GBP/yr not 2GBP/yr my mistake, un-negged, but still a useless service for any price.

        • +1

its 1pound now chum. and how is it useless? perhaps you internet is the issue. If the vpn don't work im guessing we would heard about it by now?!?!

        • +1

Thanks for un-negging. If you've had issues with the service, please drop me an email on [email protected] and we can figure out what the problem was and make things right.

  • +2

    Thanks OP. Bought one :)

  • You can easily set up VPN software on a VPS if anybody is interested in that method. VPS services like Ramnode offer some services for ~$24 a year (down to ~$16) with 31% lifetime discount coupon. You basically get 500gb bandwidth a month + server space if you need to store files. Of course it'd only cover America, but still great for services like Hulu or Netflix.

    • +1

Indeed, if any of you have experience with Linux servers, and are likely to use a lot of bandwidth, getting a VPS can be a good option. Generally speaking though, you'll be paying more for something like that than you would with us, and only get access to one location, as well as having to set everything up yourself, and maintain it if any issues arose.

However, as mentioned by verapa, Ramnode over a great service and I can personally vouch that Nick runs a tight ship over there with a fantastic network.

      • +1

Not trying to undersell your service, I did sign up with this deal! Although for people that do need more bandwidth, Linux knowledge isn't mandatory - the tutorials tell you step by step what to type into the terminal.

  • Great deal, just signed up, now how do you use this ?? lol

    • +1

Please follow the instructions in your activation email to get setup. If you have any issues, please open a support ticket.

      • The installer doesn't work for openvpn on Windows 8. I shall open a support ticket.

        • +1

I had no problem installing it under Windows 8.1

  • Getting errors trying to pay, says no payment gateway available and empties my cart.

    • I have 2 invoices now, both say "cancelled"

      • Tried again and the order went through. Odd.

        • Not sure what happened here. Seems as though the issue is now resolved though.

        • Yes all sorted and provisioned. It was well worth the effort, I'm really happy with the service and the setup guides were very appreciated!

  • +1

Got tempted by the offer description and then grabbed the deal without hesitation after reading Liam's responses here - I don't need anything more at the moment but feel confident that I'd get great service when I did. :)

    • Glad to hear you're confident in our service, I'm sure it'll live up to your expectations!

  • Hey Rep,

I tried downloading openvpn like your email suggests but it just pushes you to Private Tunnel and asks you to purchase again. Is this right?

    Thanks

    • Hi there, check your email for an Activation Email. This should contain our self-hosted download link for OpenVPN. You don't have to purchase anything again, and certainly don't have to download Private Tunnel as it's not related to our product :).

  • +1

Thanks for the deal. Gonna try iplayer out.

  • +3

If you miss this deal and can't afford the 2 pounds I can reassure you that vpngate.net is still up and running where you'll find VPNs for free (the one from Japan is crazy fast for something that's free).

By the way, if you have trouble with some ISPs in Vietnam blocking Facebook (although "officially" it's not blocked) you can try the mobile site (m.facebook.com) or any other sub-domain version you know (lite. etc).

  • +1

I'm heading to China for an 8 months research exchange and I want to get permanent access to all the sites I get in Australia + Facebook/Youtube. Is a VPN the best way to go?
