Most work fine. I've got a 1TB Toshiba Canvio portable that doesn't work well with my computer because it keeps disconnecting but with the Wii U it works fine. I had been looking out to get a good Wii U HDD and decided that using my old Toshiba for the Wii U would work well and bought the 1.5TB HDD Western Digital from Harvey Norman for $93 + $5.95 shipping to replace it.

If you use a portable HDD you need a USB 3.0 (or 2.0 if your HDD uses a 2.0 connector) Y Cable, which gives the drive more power from the console using two of the USB ports on the console. The only problem I've had was while playing Pikmin 3 the game, which is disc-based the game suddenly froze a couple of days after first connecting it. I don't think it was directly related to the hard drive but it just seemed coincidental. If you use a desktop HDD you need a spare power point on your power board. Also the Wii U can recognise up to 2TB so don't buy anything with a greater capacity than that.

    • +2

      Thanks for clearing that up.

      Basic deal is still good.

Premium is no longer attractive, unless I've misread.

As all copies of Mario Kart 8 come with 1 or 10 digital games download (if registered before end of July i think it is) if you're keen on the Mario & Luigi game you are better off getting this bundle from Big W giving you New Super Mario Bros U & Luigi, buy Mario Kart 8 individually and claim whichever game you want from the other 9 available for digital download.

Big W Premium Console (New Super Mario Bros U + New Super Luigi U) + Mario Kart 8 + 1 Downloadable Game
      $378 + 68 = $446

$17 extra to swap out Nintendo Land and get both the Mario and Luigi games.

      • Thanks for doing the math for us, kinda sucks that the EBGames premium deal wasn't as good as I first thought it was.

Now I might just hold off on the Wii U until another time, I dunno - on the fence again lol

    • @Rep Hasquari,

Is the basic bundle being offered:

Wii-U Basic + SL Starter pack + MK8 (all separately retail boxed)?

      or

Wii-U Basic SL bundle + Nintendoland + MK8 (all packed in one box)?

      or

Any of the above options depending on stock in each store?

      • They are separate, so this deal does not come with Nintendo Land.

        • Unboxed mine from EB yesterday - Nintendo land is in there. Wii U basic + skylanders + nintendo land in box. MK8 copy is part of deal, not inside the wii u box. Strangely EB don't mention it in their promo but it's 100% in the box - it's probably the same box set target has for their promo

        • Store Rep wrong. Nintendo Land comes with the Basic bundle. Same as Target deal.

    • Actually you dont need a external HDD, you can just use a old SD card and a USB SD card adapter.. You can literally upgrade your basic to a premium for 15bucks on ebay

      • Are you sure? Have you tried this? The FAQ States Sd cards can't be used for storing downloaded games

        • +4

If you plug in via USB like nephilim said then the WiiU doesn't register it as a SD card.

  • Sounds great, although it's a shame about MK8's battle mode being on normal tracks rather than the usual awesome battle maps.

    • Lol wth, it's like they ran out of time and that idea was just chucked in at the end.

  • Wait. This console is region locked?

    • Yes it is, but you can play Euro/UK games, however you will need a euro Nintendo account if you want to get the DLC for those games i believe.

  • +1

If anyone is going to attempt to pricematch this deal I'd be interested to hear about the outcome.

  • +3

This is insane. A wii-u with 3 games for $280, plus Monster Hunter 3 U for $36, Nintendoland is usually $20 bucks preowned, you've just spent $336 and you have 5 games for a fantastic console.

You don't need to ask Charlie Sheen to know this is winning.

  • Something to keep in mind…. The white analog movement rotation thingys will turn a shade of yellow after a while. That's what made me pick a black one.

    • It's a Wii-U. The prerequisites for buying one is that you don't care about looks.

      Gameplay all the waaaaay!

      • it's actually pretty damn sexy.

        • Nah , it's not.

My analogue sticks haven't yellowed though, had it 6 months.

        • Mine either. Stop eating doritos while playing Mario.

        • +3

He can't say no to CC's…nod nod

    • +1

You must have pretty gross hands If it does, my original wii nunchuks are still white.

  • Has anyone tried to use the wiiu controller to play like a portable DS console? Like you go into a maccas plug the wiiu console into a wall socket without a tv and use the controller screen alone to play games?

    • It works, but it can only reach to a maximum of around 12 feet away from the console.

I honestly don't think that a wii-u in a restaurant is a grand idea though.

Not every game supports the ability to play only on the tablet, but 5 of my 7 games do.

  • Is there a black wii u?

    • Premium. That's the $430 deal.

  • Pre-ordered in full this morning. I was hoping I might be able to take home the console today, but no luck. Great deal!

  • Is this for a new or pre-owned console?

    • new console

  • Warwick store in WA refused to go near this deal, said it was for pre-owned consoles only, and they don't have any :/

    • They got it wrong. It's available for pre-order in their system. It's a new console, only available for 31/5 pickup.

      • -1

I cant seems to find the preorder link for the basic console online. Can you share the link please?

        Thanks

        • it's not listed on the site yet

  • I picked up this console today from Majura Park eb. I received the Skylanders wii console and therefore also got Nintendo land. Pretty happy with this deal.

    • +3

I'm sorry but I read Majura Park as Majora Mask

    • You missed out on two games!

  • I paid in full but they wouldn't let me take the console. One guy was about to let me then the other guy said no. He literally bought it out and scanned it on front of me and told me it would sit out the back with my name on it. It wass the Skylanders bundle with Nintendoland, and I recommend ringing round to find someone who stocks it.

    • 7 and a half days isn't too long to wait.

      • Yeah, I don't particularly care. I thought it was a case of they wouldn't sell floor stock as they wanted to keep it to sell over the next week. But they've reserved the floorstock so I'm not sure why they couldn't just hand over the console. No street dates or anything so to speak.

  • I just pre ordered this deal, its a store wide promo not a store only one. Also they are discontinuing this model from what eb told me.

Also can someone please clarify for me this being an 8gb harddrive and it takes SD cards, can you save and load games off the SD card?

I dont need it for anything apart from saving games as I game on pc.

    • Apparently you can put an SD card into a USB reader and plug that in. I would definitely recommend an actual HDD though for stability and price.

      • Guys, how much space does the average game take up?

        • +2

Depends, it can vary from 2gb to 10+

        • Definitely more cost effective to get a HDD.
Edit: If the Wii U discs have a capacity of 25GB then directly translate that to the potential for a digital download.

        • So you can in the game save it onto the HDD or SD card without having to do any transfers on and off the machine to the HDD?

        • The console reads and write directly from/to the HDD. You can transfer content on and off the HDD as you want to though.

        • cheers

        • +4

Just found this on the Nintendo site for reference:

Eligible games and their approximate file sizes:
          Nintendo Land (3576 MB)
New Super Mario Bros. U (2304 MB)
          Game & Wario (4036 MB)
          Pikmin 3 (4547 MB)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (2467 MB)
Sonic Lost World (Wii U version) (8474 MB)
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (9748 MB)
          Wii Party U (6571 MB)
          The Wonderful 101 (12.9 GB) (PEGI 12)*
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U version) (7021 MB) (PEGI 12)*

        • +2

Wonderful 101 is so big to be able to fit all the epic in there.

    • "Also they are discontinuing this model from what eb told me."

Discontinuing which model? Are you saying EB plans to discontinue Wii U Basic and only sell the Premium?

      • Nintendo's discontinuing the basic model

        • +2

Here's to hoping the premium ver. (console only) will drop to $250. Will never be as good as the one off DSE deal for $214.

        • Got it for $254 because they were willing to ship one from the other side of the state to my local store which never stocked Nintendo products in the first place.

  • Updated the main post to include a comparison between the 2 deals and made it a bit easier to read (hopefully).
If there is anything else I should add that will help people decide which to buy let me know.

  • tempting..

    • -1

Same here, but it seems expensive for a console just to play Mario kart, Zelda and smash bros

      • +2

        Then get other games ?

        • Here is the thing. Most new consoles come out with higher price tags and not many good games. Then consumers will think not worth it now and wait for more titles and hopefully price drop on the consoles at the same time. For what zelda707 thinks only those 3 games are worth buying now.

        • there's a lack of third party games, watch dogs is delayed, no far cry 4, destiny etc.

what i meant was that its expensive for just first party games. I only used my wii for nintendo games. Everything else was on PS3

        • +4

games are also more expensive on nintendo devices even after many years. It still costs heaps for first party nintendo games. Whereas you can get Uncharted 3 for $10 if you wanted.

        • +2

yep mario kart wii from 2008 is still $50

        • there's a lack of third party games

So it's end up like last gen, not enough/no 3rd party dev support.

BigN are once again going to have to rely on 1st party games to hold up the game until next gen (which is still 5-6yrs away) & I think they know that as they keep churning out mario games, but the 2 big sellers would be MK8 & SSB-U.

        • i agree, but i've gotta say nintendo does a great job with their games. Making be buy a wii u alongside a PS/Xbox :(

        • Don't forget all the Wii games you can play

  • Went to an EB Games this morning to pre-order and the lady wouldn't let me. She said only the Premium package could be pre-ordered and you needed to come in on the 31st to buy the Basic Package outright.
    What the?

    • Call EB customer service on Monday and explain the situation. They'll call the store and correct them. You can preorder.

  • In the end I decided against purchasing though it was damn tempting.

For those interested the Adelaide store was going to allow me take the console + Skylanders and just pick up Mario Kart 8 on the 31st.

The trade-in value of Skylanders was $18.00 but it may go down by the end of May.

The staff in store weren't willing to guarantee the free game download with MK8 was actually available for Australia.

    • If it is an Australian copy of the game, which it should be, you can download it using an Australian Club Nintendo account. Nintendo Aus has confirmed the promotion is available here www.gamesites.nintendo.com.au/mk8_bonus

      • Good to know :) I thought as much, but figured I'd report back anyway.

        • which adelaide store? also was nintendo included in that bundle?

        • DOesn't sound like it.

        • Nintendo Land was not included. Basic console pack with Skylanders and Mario Kart 8 as separate items.

EB Games - Rundle Mall, Adelaide.

        • The offer from EB doesn't incl. Nintendoland, but some stores have been using the SL bundled stock to fulfil the orders so it's a YMMV situation. If you got NL with it consider yourself lucky.

  • Just grabbed this deal here in Toowoomba. I got the basic pack with the Skylanders console. I also grabbed Rayman Legends ($23) and Monster Hunter 3 ultimate.

So all in all, a Wii U plus 6 games (Nintendoland included with the Skylanders console) for $338!

Edit: They let me take the console home.

    • Great find! Hope you enjoy MH3U

  • Anyone tried to pricematch this yet elsewhere?

  • I notice that the Premium Bundle comes with a charge cradle and sensor bar… Are these necessary? Can I just use the sensor bar from my old Wii console? How does the GamePad charge if you get the Basic bundle?

    • +1

I notice that the Premium Bundle comes with a charge cradle and sensor bar… Are these necessary?

Nope. Cradle is a display stand/charger. Sensor bar for Wii, some Wii-U games.

Can I just use the sensor bar from my old Wii console?

      Yes.

How does the GamePad charge if you get the Basic bundle?

      Cable plugs straight into gamepad.

  • given this Wii U not selling well comparing others, EBGAMES should let us take home the console! So they don't have 2nd thoughts not to get them or sth.

    • I tried asking again today they said they arent allowed to because game cant be given out yet, I asked without the game they said if I pay for the current price come back on Saturday to get the difference reimbursed, so ill just wait lol.

    • Mine was the opposite, because the deal isn't in the system, the 2 are countered as separate. You could take the WiiU home and mario kart is just added as a $10 game.

    • Looks like each EB store is different. The ones I have tried all won't let me take the console home. I thought maybe they wanted to keep stock for people who just wanted the console and not the deal (ya know, crazy people) but it's the same price bundle or not. So yeah, try a different store and you may get lucky. Some people are reporting that they nabbed the Skylanders console bundle and had the MK8 as a pre-order on their receipt.

I still have hope that Nintendo have way too much Skylanders Bundle stock and these will be sent to stores for this deal. One can dream :D

      • I'm hoping for the Skylander Bundle as well. I have just checked my preorder receipt and it states "WU SKY/SF CONS" so hopefully this will mean that I get the console, otherwise I may throw a funky chicken Saturday morning.

        • This is the same as my receipt "WU SKY/SF CONS" for $199 and then "Mario Kart 8" for $80.

I would think this means they have to supply a Skylanders bundle, because that's the product stated on the receipt.

  • +1

For anyone on the fence about this, I got the following deal which I think is great:

Wii-U Premium with New Super Mario Bros + Luigi Bundle - $378 (BIGW)

Now, couple this with a $58 Mario Kart 8 deal this Saturday (BIGW) and you also get to download an extra game free (I'm taking Wind Waker HD).

That means, for $436, you get a Wii-U Premium and 4 games.

Now, I looked up the value of the games (the cheapest price I could find for a PAL version game, delivered) at www.comparegames.com.au

    Prices are:
New Super Mario Bros - $58.00
    New Super Luigi U - $45.16
Zelda: Wind Waker HD - $59.90
    Mario Kart 8 - $58.00

The above games are worth $221.06 if you ordered them seperately, so effectively making the premium console itself worth $438-221.06 = $216.94.

Which is pretty close to what DSE were selling them for last year in their clearout sale ($214).

    Hope my maths makes sense!

    • I called Big W now they advised me for the wii u smash bros pack click and collect delivery eta is 11-15 business days and home delivery 10 business days.

I was advised stock should be okay but was unable to get a %100 that if i placed the order i would get it although the deal is very tempting not sure if i'd be entering another unwanted saga lol.

    • +1

Not as good as EB basic bundle for $279:

      Mario Kart 8 - $58.00
      Skylanders Swap Force - $49.00
Zelda: Wind Waker HD (Download) - $59.90

Above games = $166.90 (minus $279) means you get the basic console for $112.10.

Many people won't want Skylander's, but if you do, this bundle is better value.

Furthermore, EB is providing many people with the Skylander's console bundle, meaning you get Nintendo land as well.

      • +2

Agreed. For about $160 more you're getting:
        32Gb instead of 8Gb
        Black console instead of white
        Sensor Bar (worth $5-$10)
        Charge Cradle (not essential)
        Console Stand (not essential)
Network Premium (could save you money on future purchases)
        New Super Luigi U ($45.16)
        No Skylanders
No chance of getting Nintendoland included.

To me it's a no brainer but the cost benefit will be different for each of us.

        • +1

Premium's only available for purchases for another 7 months.

        • What do you mean by this, are they discontinuing the premiums?

        • +1

When they announced the premium program (not model) it had an end date of 31/12/2014 for purchasing content to get the money back, this hasn't changed yet. So in 7 months you will be unable to claim the benefits of the premium program. You can still claim the points you've earned for another year though.

  • As much as i hate saying it i took the yolo attitude, cancelled my basic preorder from eb games and bought the premium deal from Big W, i'll be getting more for the buck and a black console which i'd prefer so yeah.

    • Smash bros pack? I didn't know they had a bundle for that :S

I'm guessing you're referring to the Mario Bros bundle for $378. Perhaps you could go to your nearest JB HiFi and get a price match! (make sure you access the mobile version of the site from your phone, as it doesn't mention the "online exclusive offer" ;)

Then maybe you can cancel your BigW order if it allows you to?

      • Yes that pack, i was unable edit that lol.

When i usually try get JB to price match they usually don't price match bundles or discontinued stock, also my nearest BigW stores dont have stock at the moment they are ordering in once orders are made online.

Ill just see how this goes lol

        • Buuuuuuuuuuut, on the topic on a Smash Bros pack, when Smash comes out, it's going to be JUST as impressive. I still have a wager that Nintendo will reveal an exclusive Megaman headed up by Platinum Games at E3.

Likelihood of this actually happening? About 008.02%

  • +2

Still waiting confirmation from EB but I tried my luck with a different store. They had 1 Skylanders console bundle left. They checked with the manager and not only did I get to take it home today I also got the bundle with Nintendo Land :)
Grabbed Monster Hunter as well and cancelled my pre-order at the other store.
Really does seem to be a store by store basis. Will keep this deal updated as we go.

  • Does anyone know if the Big W bundle is the same as the EB bundle. I don't have any gaming console and looking to get in to one. This looks like it is $30 cheaper than the EB deal for the premium pack.

Wii U Console Mario Kart 8 Black Premium Pack

    https://www.bigw.com.au/entertainment/video-games-consoles/w…

    • +1

Don't forget the 10% off flyer.
Edit: I think the only incentive for EB's premium model is Nintendoland. Save $70 by going Big W. You can get Nintendoland pretty cheap in some places, one of those being from EB preowned.
