6610

A free Intel Galileo board from Microsoft. Don't abuse it, happy creating.

Valued over $100 ?

The next big thing is small
From the website:
"We’re bringing Windows to a whole new class of small devices. Build a smart coffee mug, build a talking bear, build a robot, or build something else entirely. All this using a platform and tools you already know and love."

After you enter your email address you will receive a confirmation email , which will contain a link. Open the link and enter your information, you should then get an email saying "Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.". You do not need to prove your a software programmer/engineer to get the Intel Galileo board

Edit: some are having more success going to the website https://www.windowsondevices.com/ without clicking via OzBargain website.

I got mine from a gmail account

Some users are reporting emails are not being received to free email addresses. If you don't receive email confirmation within a few hours, try an alternative address (preferably an ISP or work email address).

*** twitter posts and photos are indicating there is hardware not just whitepaper**

"The Intel Galileo included with the Windows Developer Program for IoT kit will run a special version of Windows for the Intel Galileo"

  • Worked with gmail but not hotmail.

  • So if you get the 2nd email are you guaranteed a board? I want one for the Raspbmc Galileo version.

  • Saw this deal early morning. Do not expect many people know what this is.
It seems like part for rocket science. Now nearly 300 +.
Great to know so many computer hardware experts in ozbargain.

  • Keen to try something out with this. Thanks!

  • Tried again with an old Uni account, got an email straight away. Makes me think it is a targeted offer, perhaps tied to this.

  • +1

I'm going to spill some booze on mine to create electric dreams

  • This offer looks legit (in that it comes from Microsoft). But I am doubtful that Microsoft will be sending out the actual boards to everyone.

Yes, the confirmation email mentioned "hardware development kit", but it could just mean development kit targeted at certain hardware. In other words, they might just send you a DVD with the development software, and you provide your own hardware.

Still, I've signed up just in case I am wrong. :)

  • Got my confirmation email with gmail account. It seems instantaneous as well

  • +1 for copy pasting the URL.

Tried last night from clicking the URL here and no dice (uni work + gmail address)

Copy pasted the link and did it in IE and email came through instantly (used student uni address).

Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

    Thank you,

    Microsoft IoT Team

    Fingers crossed it comes.

  • -1

4 times from 4 different email addies, no return email.

  • Got my confirmation email too, thanks. Can't wait, a bit excited :)

    • what email host did you use? I mean gmail / hotmail or something else?

  • -1

Well over 3 hours since signed up no confirmation email. :(

    • +2

Gotit! Doesn't work with gmail. worked with company email. :)

      • +1

Thanks, company email worked straight away.

Also switched to IE to sign up but not sure if that helps.

        • WOW i've signed up now with Gmail, personal domain email, AND uts.edu.au, all not working. then i tried your suggestion and used IE on Windows 7. Worked perfectly right away email arrives, infact i used my same personal domain email.

  • +1

    Woop woop. :)

    Name,

Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

    Thank you,

    Microsoft IoT Team

  • Awww yeah!

Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

    Thank you,

    Microsoft IoT Team

  • Used my University email and it worked

    • I can second this… came almost instantly.

      • +18

        came almost instantly.

You must be really excited to get this device.

  • +1

I got the second email but it ends with "thank you we will contact you shortly"
Nothing about the sending out a kit. I didn't include and company or website or twitter info.
    EDIT:
"We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped." comes as another email.
My mate Ben Dover is pleased.

  • What the hell does this board allow you to do?

    • +3

If you don't know, don't get one :)

      • I won't; are you able to answer the question?

        • You can program it with C# to do unlimited things, turn lights on, make mechanical parts move, switch things, etc. Arduino is the best example

        • It's essentially a small, low-powered, low-specced computer; it's nowhere near powerful enough to be used as a PC. Similar products (Arduino and Raspberry Pi) have mostly been used as hardware controllers for robots, sensors, and the like.

        • @Orte: Doesn't seem too different from the circuit board with a chip that I made in school to be honest…I could do all the things Stinge stated by adapting the thing I have in my attic, provided I can find the scuzi port!

        • I do agree with Dr Stinge
if you're unable to 'google' this, or utilise the tools availble to you on the internet to determine its functionality, don't get one

          Raspberry Pi,
          Arduino

          are two key words here,
if those get you a bit excited, this thing's FOR you

if you go 'eh?', walk away, find another bargain

        • +1

          @bleugh:

Never intended on getting it. I wanted to know what it does.

And every single link on the entire front page of google was filled with jargon and buzzwords I didn't understand. That even includes the Wiki page.

It's not really relevant to Google something technical that you don't understand as all information you find on it pre-supposes knowledge, in this case knowledge I don't have.

I could tell you to Google "the Piezoresistive effect," as an example, but you'd not understand any of it without a reasonable knowledge of electro-physics.

Thanks though, your comment was really helpful. Those people who actually answered the question days ago didn't know that I just wanted to be sermon-ed by some Internet Hero who sweeps in with 'JFGI'.

    • Whatever you want!

    • You can use it to create various programmable projects similar to raspberry pi or arduino. It's basically electronics board which gives you range of input and output with which you can create working models e.g. Robots or you cars which can avoid obstacles etc. possibilities are endless. Jut YouTube arduino project and you will see nerds loving it.

    • +1

      It's Girlfriend 2.0

      • And you type your application using Girlfriend 1.0

  • Excellent! Doesn't work with Gmail (as I've been waiting since last night). Used Tpg and my work email(s) to get 3.

Not "brodening", I intend to use this to aid my research in some lightweight network protocols and I need a few end-points.

  • $100 board for free! Hell yeah!

  • +3

Our first SDK release in the spring of 2014 will give you a chance to look at our new software, including an incomplete prerelease of our software and API surface. We’ll provide samples and documentation and we’ll show you how to create your own fun projects such as the life-size piano we demonstrated at Build 2014. And we’ll continue to release software updates throughout 2014 including a more complete API surface and integrated cloud services.

Sounds to me like the "kit" they are sending out is just the "Software Development Kit".

Did anyone check out the terms and licence agreement link?
It only talks about pre-release software. No mention of a free board anywhere so I would be surprised to see one included.

    MICROSOFT PRE-RELEASE SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS

    • Good detective work Kamoi. I really doubt a Galileo will be included.

    • I agree, I am doubtful that the board will be included, but what kind of SDK needs to be sent out in the post though? Would it not be easier for MS just to provide some sort of download link to the software and documentation?

      • but what kind of SDK needs to be sent out in the post though?

        Software with hardware

    • See at near the one minute mark on the video here http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/do-it-yourself/gettin…
"Many have received a getting started with Galileo kit"

    • This is part of the email you receive after signing up and they confirm your mailing address.

"We would like to share our SDK and a hardware development kit with you."

Ben Dover, Al Lickertwat, Hal Apeno.
Surely someones trying to Broden this!

My favorite is getting the receptionist to page "Mike Hunt"
"Mr Johnson, please come and see Mike Hunt at reception"
      etc.

  • Used the same email but without going through ozbargain. This time got the acknowledgement email immediately. Entered my address. hopefully will get it.

  • Register with Hotmail addresses =No response.
Register with Gmail address =instant response.
    Please explain.

    • I used Hotmail.com (no au ect) instant response….nothing on yahoo email :)

      • bizarre. I got no response to my gmail, but instant response to yahoo.

    • I used hotmail.com.au address and got confirmation instantly.
It may help that it is the address linked to my Windows account and previously used for a technet account

edit: i re-registered and i immediately received an email

  • Instant response with my Hotmail account.
    Thanks for the freebie lukeloop

  • Thanks OP

  • If I actually get this, I'll give it to a nerdy programmy mate in my circle of friends, who always selflessly fixes our computers/ consoles/ appliances etc. (he loves this kinda stuff). Unfortunately I can't contact him at the moment, and I need help with Question 7 in the email they send.

The email back from them asks for:

    1. My company - I work for a medical research institute (that's the email I usesd to to get an instant response; got nothing from prior attempt via gmail) so I'll put that there.

    2. My website - Again, I'll just supply the homepage for the institute.

    3. "Your projects are best described as:" with three options. - I don't reckon it matters which of these I specify.

    4. "Your experience in programming Windows:" - Of the available options I checked Win-32.

    5. "What languages do you have experience with?" - I put C++ here.

    6. "Which dev boards have you used in projects?" - I put Arduino.

    7. "Which IDE have you used?" - So… erm… what's an IDE? What should I put here? Should I put "Arduino Processing", given my response to Question 6?

    8. What projects do you plan to build with the boards? - I can think of a few medico-related things to put here, this one should be no problem. I just want to make sure I put something sensible for Question 7.

Any advice from anyone who knows what an IDE is would be appreciated!

    • Yea that should be fine. Remember most of the fields are not mandatory. :) So you don't need to fill everything up.

    • -1

None of the answers that are not marked as * matter.
In regards to what an IDE is…try searching the internet..I've heard this thing has lots of information

      • +1

What's an "internet" Mr Smiles? ;-P
Seriously though, there's no need for patronism … most peeps would've understood that I wanted some quick advice from someone that knew about IDEs, so that I could fire back a reply to the email; not that I wanted the acronym IDE defined.
Try reading between the lines; I've heard you can glean a lot of information from there ;-P

        • +3

          Hey GK,
An IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment. Basically it is a self contained framework that contains a large number of built in tools to compile, execute and debug code all in one place. The user interface has other features that allows you to "visualise" the components of the code in dev, link to "collaborative workspaces" (so many can work on a project) as well as simple (yet handy tricks) like code completion and stuff.

Typically IDEs are specific to the language/framework being used. XCODE is used for OS X/iOS (AFAIK), Visual Studio for Win32, C# and .net.

Disclaimer: there may be technical inaccuracies in my post as I'm not a dev (more at home using Immunity/IDA). :)

    • +10

I suggest you put "I am more of a SATA guy". ;)

      • Thanks for the advice nets, and it is true to an extent (in that I am into rapid data transfer), but … I don't think SATA is much longer for this earth!

    • Do you have to reply to this via email, or did they link you to the site with these questions? I got the latter, and if you had ticked Arduino, it gives Arduino Processing as an option to tick.

      • You need to reply to their email.

        • Are they really going to read 20,000 emails?

        • I got sent to another form on the website so I could enter shipping details. Nowhere did it ask to reply to the confirmation emails. They must have changed the process after I signed up.

  • Receive email from [email protected] within 1/2 hour

    Used @hotmail.com to register.

  • Received email within seconds of registering at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Specifically says "We would like to share our SDK and a hardware development kit with you".

  • Used GMail - No email back.
Used Optusnet email address and received an email straight away.
Filled in the form then within 15 mins received a simple email back:

"Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

    Thank you,

    Microsoft IoT Team"

  • Hotmail - No email
    iPrimus - No email
Work - Email within 1 minute

  • Tried signing up with my Uni email last night and no luck, tried today with my Gmail one and got an email instantly. Signed up, looking forward to having a play around with it (hopefully) and seeing if I can make anything!

  • signed up, looking to use either arduino or pi for project so this should be good

  • @live.com got an email within 5 minutes - thanks OP!
Gonna attempt making an ambilight clone

  • Thanks for the heads up OP.

Took ages for email to arrive…and that was with a Hotmail address.

    Hope the board arrives :)

  • +9

Keep your eyes out for Galileo and Tap King package deals on ebay.

  • Tried my gmail, iinet (ISP) and my Uni email and nothing.

  • +1

Three separate emails - no response.

Are we calling this BS yet?

    • +1

I've tried several email addresses starting from shortly after the deal was posted here. Even tried on several different browsers.

I get nothing at my ISP's email addy (at Adam internet) or using my gmail.com/msn.com/outlook.com/live.com/hotmail.com addresses either.

Doesn't seem to work for me :(

    • Tried navigating there without clicking the ozbargain link? They could be checking the referral URL and blocking people from Ozbargain. What about an .edu.au email?

      • Also, are you saying you have used some of the languages and devices presented?

        • Yeah, I made sure to clear my cache and cookies, and even used IE (urrrgh) and typed in the URL manually so it wouldn't know I came from OzBargain. It's possible it's detecting my IP, but I rebooted several times to get a different one just in case.

And, with the languages, yeah… all of them except Python (which is true… maybe I should lie?), and yes to Raspberry Pi and Arduino.

    • Why would we call it BS - I've received two confirmation emails with the second saying : "We would like to share our SDK and a hardware development kit with you."

      • It's not a deal that everyone can access.

        What's your secret?

  • I suspect that they've halted the flow of these. I was able to get the appropriate emails a few hours ago through a Gmail address, but my friend has tried three different email addresses and he hasn't been able to get the confirmation or verification emails.

    • I tried my own domain email within the first 100 clicks from here, nothing.

  • +1

Wow, 5 different accounts. gmail, ISP, student and two business email addresses. Finally worked on the last business email address I tried. A bit random I think.

  • tried yesterday when it was first posted.. got nothing.. tried again a few hours ago with the same email address and got the email in about 2min.

  • The final eMail reply advises that you'll get an eMail telling when you can expect your kit to be sent / arrive.

  • No luck with my iPrimus or Gmail address.

  • tried bigpond and gmail addresses at different times using different browsers… no dice :(

  • i dont understand anything in this tread

    • My tyres have no tread, but it didn't stop me from applying.

  • I wonder with so many people on Ozbargain (over 20,000 clicks) signing up… how many of them are just signing up for the sake of free stuff? LOL!

Wonder how many are actually gonna use it.

    • +1

yeah … they should have put some minimum price - even if it is to just cover shipping, that would take '100% free' out of the equation.

      • That's what I was thinking too.

      • +3

I'm willing to bet that 99.9% of people on this thread don't have the skill/knowledge to do anything with this kit.

        • Id even go 99.95% !

        • +1

          I'm in the 0.05% then and it's a shame.

        • maybe a random quiz in the area would of been good to weed out those people.
