    • yeah I got the same thing but tried a few mins later and it was fine :)

Thanks OP, been on the sidelines wondering if I should get one. Now I will:)

  • +1

I spent so much here at Ozbargain!
Now I can add this to my Logitech keyboard, Sunbeam espresso and grinder, gift cards and other various consumer crap.

  • +4

A massive $10 discount attracked almost 650 votes and rising….

  • +2

Thanks for all the upvotes! You have made my day :) The chromecast is really an essential device I reckon :)

  • Out of stock! Available for pick up but no discounts :(

  • Expired …

    • Wow, I only just ordered/paid for it 10 minutes ago.

Hope they don't start sending out emails with apologies saying there's insufficient stock to fulfill our orders!

      • They will mate. 9740 clicks right now. If 10% purchased, that's still 1000 chromecasts. Do you think they will get that kind of stock?

Dick's crazy deals weren't made with a site like OZB in mind.

I don't mind getting it canceled though. I only bought it because you guys did. Didn't really need it or tbh know what it does besides stream media and play youtube (which I can already do on my smart TV and a number of other devices).

  • +1

Don't forget to purchase with your 28degrees if you have received the bonus $20 email or your ING to get 5% cashback.

Ok I'm going to remove ozb as my favourites now, I'm broke.

  • +1

    Thank god! Its expired.

  • Big relief now it's expired. I'll wait for the new generation, hopefully coming out end of the year, though.

  • Thanks OP, easily got it price matched at JB Hifi.

  • what firmware is being shipped with the DS ones ?

    • I don't think anyone would have received one yet to know.

  • +1

I purchased one of these online today, and then decided to not wait and got one in store too.
After playing around with it all evening, I don't see what the fuss is about. Streaming is average quality, Netflix is worse on this than via the playstations (3 or 4), the YouTube stream has also been quite choppy. The router is only 3m away and I have no issue streaming the highest quality Netflix over it to a playstation 3 that is 3 times further away with several walls in between.
Screen casting from computer is laggy as hell.

I just tried streaming local content via plex, from and 3.4 GHz i7 computer and it was crappy as hell, froze up more often than not. Same story with Plex via NAS.

Taking this one back to DSE tomorrow for refund and will cancel the one being delivered.

    • +4

Strange, YouTube and other video streaming such as Plex seem to work perfectly for me. Casting my phone screen or chrome tab has also been amazing.

      • I had a few YT clips that went fine, but others sucked.
I tried several different files via plex (MKV, MP4 & basic AVI) and they all sucked.

I tried casting a Note II, nope, wouldn't work. Chrome tab is too laggy for my liking, cool but laggy. I was on r/aww and the images showing on my laptop, took forever to load on the screen, some wound't, gifs were a disaster.

        • A faulty unit maybe?

    • I have used mine for a month with plex, no problems at all.

    • So heres the thing I grabbed one via JB on Friday and had my DS one delivered today - the JB on I setup on the lounge TV, the wifi router is below the TV (like 60cm) and my NAS running PLEX is in my study/shed 40m away - it worked perfectly streaming files. The DS one arrived today and I set it up in my Study on a little 'dumb TV' again I have a (second wifi) router and it is about a meter from the TV but this time performance is tragic stuttery. Both routers are the same generation Airport Base stations (a/b/g/n capable) - the only thing I can think of is interference like neighbours wifi which I see a little stronger here and things like games consoles / mobiles on the wifi or my wireless headphones jamming up the signal. I'll have to fiddel a bit to work this out.

Anyway my point I guess is that it might not be the devices fault (though a version with AC wifi would be most welcome).

      • Mine was shocking tonight, slow and laggy. Sad state of affairs when the YouTube app on my WD TV loads and plays a video quicker than the Chromecast.
I rebooted my router for other reasons, chromecast kept telling me there was no internet connection for ages, I had to unplug it several times to finally work.
It goes back on Thursday night.

  • Works well with my Nexus. Initially the video was laggy as hell and I was disappointed, but when I tried again later it was all good and very smooth, so don't know what happened.

The only thing is battery drain when mirror casting so I can't keep streaming videos from it for too long.

Basically replaces my slow laptop. Fantastic for this price!

Hope Dick Smith have stock this time and we don't receive an email like this:

    "Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your order of the Google Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player. Unfortunately due to stock >constraints we are unable to supply your order.

We will however be able to replace your order with the Sandisk 4 GB Ultra speed memory stick.

All replacement orders will be despatched on Friday 18th July 2014.

    • What time did you order?

    • da fuq? 4GB memory stick doesn't cost $39 bucks!

  • I was expecting to have my order canceled. But just got my shipping confirmation and tracking number. YAY

  • +1

Ordered one yesterday - $39 I wasn't planning on spending :/ Hopefully I can put it to good use

  • +1
    • Ordered yesterday.
Sorry we won't let you pick up from your nearest store at the same price, but we will pay for a courier to deliver it from your next door suburb. :| Dick logic at its best.
  • Been playing with it all night. Now I need a hdmi-vga converter or optical-rca converter. One thing leads to another.

  • Yep the tracking on mine states it was picked up in rockingham to be delivered to me in Thornlie…. make perfect sense, not.
    (this is perth)

  • I spoke to a JB HiFi employee, and he said he would match it in-store.

  • How to get free delivery? it shows $5 for me. so the total copes out to be $44.

    • Did you fail to notice the big red EXPIRED section in the heading.
Freight is now being charged, see new posting - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/152518

      • Not expired, free postage still and $39 Delivered :)

        • +1

Yes still works. Just ordered. Thanks for updating OP

        • You are welcome, enjoy the Chromecast!

  • +1

    Still Works. Thanks OP!

The only selling point would be the screen casting/mirroring function, but it's just too laggy atm. Will pass until the updated CC-FW and apk fixes this. All other functions for me are pretty redundant. So will pass on this. Saved $39 for another day on OzB (which won't be too soon)! :D

  • So is the casting / mirroring really laggy ? That's the main reason I bought it - mainly to show the wife and kids family photos I've taken with my phone soon after taking them. As I have a Linux HTPC setup with MythTV and XBMC (frontends/ clients in 3 rooms) and Plex with PlexPass on both my and my wife's phones, I don't really need it for anything else. So should I just return it unopened once it is delivered ?

    • So is the casting / mirroring really laggy ?

Check these yt vids & you will see how laggy it is. It even drops out frequently. I think its because the there isn't enough bandwidth on the 2.4Ghz spectrum among other variables (EMI, distance etc.) to blame for this lag. Google should have gone with 5Ghz, but that would have knowingly pushed up manufacturing and in turn, unit costs.

main reason I bought it - mainly to show the wife and kids family photos I've taken with my phone soon after taking them

For photos it would be ok as they are static, but the lag atm is mostly for realtime processing tasks like games, videos (depending on birate).

I don't really need it for anything else. So should I just return it unopened once it is delivered ?

Seeing as you currently already have an appropriate setup, my suggestion would be to refurn it & get a refund. Your choice ultimately. OzB. Buy another day!

      • Thanks for the comments and yt links. It looks like it could be ok for photo display, as you say - but perhaps iffy for video. It obviously depends on the quality of your wireless connection. I actually bought 3 (3 tv's) - so I reckon I'll try one and if it is no good I'll return or sell the other 2. Happy to pay the $39 for one just to play around with it. BTW It looks like the screencasting currently only works on certain phone or tablet models and Android releases at the moment. I have a Nexus 5 so should be fine.

        • Got mine yesterday. First of 3 ordered within 10 minutes of each other. Looks like no 2 is being delivered today. Fantastic for my main use case - ie screen mirroring to quickly view photos and videos from phone camera on TV - but all other content seems to work really nicely too (plex, google music etc). Photos take a second or so to resolve from slightly fuzzy to sharp view and there is a slight lag - but both are no big deal. Setup is very easy. Really impressed. Router is upstairs from the TV so would probably be even better if in same room. May take a router with me on family holidays so can use in holiday accommodation for shows and music - although laptop with the content and hdmi cable serves that purpose well enough.

screw you guys (and girls). Just broke my "wont buy from dick smiths" rule

  • Still working. Thanks alot OP

  • I didnt want to buy one but damn this deal made me bite. I was trying to hold out for the second iteration of this device. Oh well, when the new one does come I'll pass this down to my younger bro.

  • +1

coupon code doesn't work anymore? :(

  • Deal Finally expired.. :(
Oh we'll maybe next time :). Or maybe JB will still price match..

  • looks like this is done. tried jb to price match but dse product page doesn't load. fail :(

  • So does anyone know if you can cast Amazon Prime from a computer to chromecast?

  • I stll haven't got my order shipped yet. I placed my order 9:30am 10/07 when this deal was first put up

    • Same here :( …

      • Really when did you order? my one is still processing….according to DSE online

        • 10/07 sometime before lunch.

        • Hmm ok anyone received their orders yet for those who ordered on the 10/07, are you still waiting??

        • @neonlight:

Ordered 8.20am on 11/7 and only still just got the acknowledgement email where it seems others have got there's already :(

        • @mightyhawks23: Oh dear…so its not first come first serve hmmm

        • @neonlight:

Just got shipping details for mine - hopefully yours turns up soon

    • mine just arrived.

  • I ordered at 1:20pm on 11/7 and I just received confirmation this morning that my order was delivered to my parcel locker.

  • Wow good turn around on Delivery, only ordered on Friday morning.

"Your parcel, DS***** from Dick Smith is on board for delivery by close of business today. You can track your delivery at startrack.com.au."

    • Success! Delivery confirmed.

Can't wait to play with it tonight.

      • +4

Make sure you leave enough time for your Chromecast too!!!

  • Deivered

  • Mine arrived this morning - yippee!

  • Plex for iOS on special - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/152725

  • Sadly disappointed with mirror on my phone M7 HTC, it works but is too laggy.

Happy to say chrome cast off Chrome is brilliant :) most happy with that.

Other than that what other uses are there?

    • I miracast many devices through a miracast receiver and you always have lag mirroring.

Mine should arrive tomorrow, they seem to be sending it from a town away, so it should be here tomorrow morning. I had zero faith with dick, but looks like they have come through on this occasion. :)

  • Both of mine arrived today even though I ordered them a few hours apart. I have no clue about these app things. I downloaded something called "videostream", and it appears to be streaming perfectly. I assume that's the best thing to use with videos on my computer?

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videostream-for-go…

  • Who else has their order sitting in Freight Manifest Transmitted (Notified)? Lazy Dick!

  • I've got mine just before. Butthe seal on the box is broken already :-(

    • Whaa no way, that would suck as you know its probably a return.

  • Hooked it up yesterday. Works like a charm, Note 3 screen mirroring works good. Love Netflix and Plex on it. If only I could cast my Android's chrome tabs to the TV. The Nexus 3 isn't supported for Screen Mirror.

  • Ordered mine on the morning of the 11th, arrived this morning, works perfectly so far :)

  • +2

Galaxy S4 supports screen mirroring with the Chromecast, however only with Kitkat Android 4.4.

Australian stock of the Galaxy S4 is still on Jelly Bean Android 4.3 :(

  • I'm using the newest version of the Chromecast app on my Galaxy S4 but the "Cast Screen" option isn't available on the side menu. Anyone else experience this problem or know how to fix?
EDIT: thanks, didnt see your comment earlier

  • Mine's still "Awaiting Fulfillment" :(

    • It's back on the website again, so it shouldn't be long.

    • Same, I ordered pretty much as soon as the deal was posted. Poor form IMO considering others who ordered long after received them on Monday

    • Same here. What does the "reorder" next to it mean?

    • Mate, my one still says "processing", that's worse than yours. At least you know yours is getting fulfil.

I ordered pretty soon 1hr after the deal was posted but all others orders day after got theirs already. I dun get it =/

Sent email they say all processing at warehouse

      • I am in the same boat " Processing"

"Awaiting fulfillment" is the 1st thing when you buy it on DSE. once the payment has been processed it changes to Processing which i am guessing they are still waiting on the stock :P hopefully it changes to Delivery

    • Mine says the same even after ordering within the first hour of the deal posted.
Called DS and was told the order is on its way now. Was given a tracking number too.

      • Mate, the phone hangs up automatically as soon as you dial that number 1300 366 644, enter 1 and 3…

Looks like DSE got ozbargained BIG TIME, understaffed, totally out

        • No, it has been doing that for ages. Choose the option where you have no details and you will get through.
The tracking ones just put you through to Star Track anyway.

        • @snuke:

I'm pretty sure none of it goes through I tried no details option, and have a problem with online order none available

    • Well I just checked the Dick website and apparently my order is "Complete"; tracking info says it's in transit from Brisbane, didn't even notice the emails they sent :)

  • The phone system is in shambles no options work, my order stuck for 7 days not moving can't contact anyone rang local store they gave me yet another number but on voicemail.

Email reply on website is generic reply saying warehouse will process order (a email template)

    No deal dick!

    • try facebook, I got better response there than their phones or emails

      • As in posting on their wall or private msg

        • if you post in their wall they will ask you to pm your order number. I did both and the problem solved within two days

        • I've sent them a message if they don't reply I will just post on their wall, absoluately shocking service no comms nothing at all for 7 days

  • got mine today. Received a few emails yesterday, one for invoice other for shipping notice, so if you haven't received those yet then it might be a coupla days

    • When did you order? I ordered Friday and mine said dispatched on Friday, got my tracking number yet have had no updates.

      • I think I ordered it first day, so probably Friday as well. I was in no hurry, but I am in Melb so may be close to dispatch.

  • +3

anyone who has missed it can message me and pick it up from me as it was impulse buy for me..
can be picked up in Melb CBD.. same price.. cheers

  • -

  • +2

Still processing status, no updates. 9th day coming

  • I'm glad I've got this just from the standpoint that it allows me to cast livestream from my phone. :) Flex plus chromecast is awesome too. :) Its a great device and has pretty much turned my apple tv into a piece of junk.
