  • I just got a black one last week when they were $100.
Cheap vest but the blue is the worst color and its not like you can wear a jumper over it either.

  • Seriously travellers, pay more and get something that looks good in your photos.

MacPac (60% off) & other outdoor stores are clearing their winter stock. Worth checking what better produced products you can get for say $20 more. Cheap gear can be expensive in the long run. I know, I've bought Kathmandu & only regret my decision. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/155195#comment-2151664

Went to MacPac site, frontpage shows "60% off!" in huge letters but its not clickable and won't show me what's on special.
      Fine, manual hunt it is.
Site is very slow to respond, can't sort items by price, everything looks expensive.
      Crappy website.

But better quality product, in my experience. Their equivalent to this deal is the Orbit for $100.

I own one of the down jackets bought for $99 a while back. It's now my favourite travel companion in cold places. Stores usually stock at same price as site, and they have moved sale stock from interstate for me.

I did say sales in stores - I shop in stores rather than online for this type of gear so I can compare quality, price, & what suits my needs. Try getting expert advice from Kathmandu staff - I have neve found it.

        Other stores have sales too.
And Kathmandu site looks much more expensive until you find the clearance stock ;-)

        • I flat out refuse to buy Kathmandu unless its on sale.

One of my friend used to be a manager at one of their stores.. staff discount for kathmandu branded stuff was 70% off rrp… always makes me feel their real cost is low and markup must be crazy

      • won't show me what's on special.

go to clearance on menu bar :)

  • Just come back from a store and got the peyto jacket and vest. Jacket was down to 100 but I just showed the site on my phone and they dropped the price, she said the womens was already 50. Got a couple of other things that were good foe the price, around 30 for a button up shirt and 20 for a nice looking long sleeve tshirt. All for my son (except the jacket he wanted a vest)

I have to say sizes vary greatly, my son is a tall and skinny 16yo and some things were too big in a large, other things were too small in xtra large, one shirt he got was xxl - no way is he that size. So take care in ordering online.

  • Thanks Holly, I am now $150 poorer, but I am now warm :)

  • $299.98 lol. Katmandhu is retail speak for hyperinflatedprices.

  • The spec says it has duck down and feather fill and a minimum 85% duck down filling.

meaningless without fill weight and loft/power :(

    instead consider http://www.macpac.com.au/clearance/mens-jackets/mens-down-ve…

Fill: 600 Loft, white duck down
    Fill weight: 110 g (size M)

    • Well you'll be better off getting that one from Macpac since in any case the one from Kathmandu went up to the same price.

    • That's what you get from a supermarket style outdoor shop - little product detail (without fill weight & loft, you know very little), hard to compare specs with materials listed by Kathmandu's own trademark name, and lack of expert advice. And that for about the same price as a store where the staff know & have used their products.

Have purchased from Mountain Designs since their 1 store was below their old Brisbane factory. I still use one of the first down sleeping bags they designed - a prototype, refilled for free till it reached 25 years old! I have taken back a rare faulty clothing item to MacPac over a year after purchase - immediate refund. Returning frequently faulty merchandise to Kathmandu was a real pain.

But as hollykryten points out, Kathmandu clothes are good enough for everyday wear. But why settle for less at nearly the same price? It may be OzBargain blasphemy, but a bargain is not just about the price.
