From previous experience with them they will up the price before that.

    • Not sure why they would bother to do so, since I think its eBay who pocket's the difference. So why doesn't DS just enjoy the additional sales volume??

      • +4

i would think they split it in some way or another.

        • TGG once did a eBay discount on a Panasonic camera…

Good price, bur all the documentation that came with it (eg, Tax Invoice & shipping label showed -only- the higher, pre-discounted price.

How can it be right / legal / useful to do that?

(Eg, it likely created a nightmare for their bookkeepers… ATO might get the idea that their revenues (for that deal alone, & other deals were offered with similarly "hidden" discounts) were higher than actual.)

          ???

PS From the shear # of listed items, DSE seems to be aiming for 100% online.

PROBLEM: We can't sort by Brand / Maker in eBay… [Makers love it!]

      • +20

        because more money

      • +9

        Greed, unlimited greed mate ;)

      • +3

I've got no doubt ebay are funding or co-funding this, otherwise how could they offer 'better than their own sale' prices on low margin products like PS4, especially considering feebay will be raking in paypal % as well.

Still, as long as it's a win for the consumer I am happy.

        • +3

It quite possibly is funded by eBay, remember they get 5-10% commission on anything sold

      • +3

Based on how Dell increased prices on certain items by 5% during the 20% off, and based on how eBay offered 15% off everything at another occasion, I strongly suspect that on the 20% off sales eBay funds 15%, and Dick Smith funds 5%.

        • +4

no ebay rakes in about 10-12% fees
So most likely DS is covering the other 10% and raise some prices by 5%
10% is like stock standard discount on all products

Its the minimum margin you should be making on electronics (usually 30% or higher)
i.e. consoles and apple devices are only about 10-12% profit

So this way they wont make a loss since 10% is their standard discount they release every other day (just check ozbargain history) +ebay fees
ebay absorbs the fees to offset their part of the discount

They profit from impulse buys to other sellers + brainwashing you to think of ebay more and more as a "buy it now" online ecommerce store and not just an auction house

And DS profits via volume uplift, moving stock out the door and small profit from the markups

          P.s.
If youre reading this Operations/Sales executive of DS, pm me job offers

        • +1

@furythree: You're forgetting the PayPal cut as well, as I believe all purchases have to be made through it.

        • @ryang:

the 10-12% is inclusive of paypal fees (though its probably closer to 15%

but you get my point though

        • +1

          @furythree:

I'd be surprised if Dick Smith were paying 'regular person' eBay and PayPal fees.
If so, either Dick Smith are incredibly lousy at negotiation, or eBay and PayPal have stopped wooing trusted/big brands.

      • +1

        A Classic Dick Move.

    • +5

From previous experience with them they will up or drop the price before that.

      FTFY.

Don't forget that prices were also dropped. Dick Smith adjusts their pricing 2-3 times a week so no doubt you will find some products at a higher price, but you will also find many others at a lower price.

      • +1

Yup, agreed. The item I had my eye on actually dropped to half price during the sale (before the 20% off). Colour me lucky!

    • +5

Not universally true. In the last eBay 20% off Sunday promo, the PS4 price in their eBay store were actually reduced from $548 to $499, and was thrown in free shipping, so net price for buyer came down to $399.20

    • +9

A good way to catch them out is for all us OzBargainers to start posting their current prices in our comments for things that we are interesting or many might be interested in. When the day comes for the deal, at least we can refer to the prices here to see if they actually have been jacked up or not, and thereby getting a better understanding of whether it is a deal or not. Just a thought. That is all.

    • +3

What's to be noted here is that the promo window is now several days vs previously one day only. I suspect we will see a lot of price and stock movements during the 4 day window.

    • or remove some popular items

    • +2

You called it. The UA55H7000 was $1999, now $2399….

20% off our 20% inflated prices!

      • +1

        Which equates to 4% off!!
        1.2 x 0.8 = 0.96

    • EDIT:
Above post mentioned the same good i wanted to buy.

  • I managed to hold back not buying the PS4 under $400 then. Not sure if I can have the same will power then…

  • +1

    Let's see!! Haha

  • +4

Yep, more like typical 10% off they offer by the time they inflate prices over the next few days.

    No Macbook Air :(

    Exclusions?

    • This is dick Smith…..

      Inclusions?

      • Obviously those downvoting have not tried to buy something on one of their many previous sales only to find it was on their 10 lines of text exclusion list?

        • Fair enough in terms of the actual Dick Smith online store. But this is their eBay store - if it's listed there, then the discount can be applied.

I was looking at this as well. Unfortunately they've just jacked up the price $400. So you'll get it for $1900, which is not as good as the Good Guys current offer of $1997 with $200 VISA (link: http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/content/real_cash)

    • it's $2399 at the moment (15/8)

    • Yep - bumped the 60 7000 from 2499 to 2999. pricks.

Haven't kept myself to speed with the latest prices for the PS4.
Will this be a good opportunity to purchase the ps4 (getting read for Fifa15)

  • +10

Just be aware that I'm still waiting for my PS4 bought on 20/07.

I hope you don't have to deal with their nonexistent online support….the worst support experience I've ever had.

Bought from their ebay store on 20/07, star track last update on 24/07 says "Arrived at StarTrack Location for processing"

Star Track support won't help…DS ebay wont reply to messages, their phone support is useless, same default answer "will get back to you in up to 48h"

It sucks because I don't want to open a paypal dispute as I bought it for 399…It feels like this is what they want..

    • I had decent support from DS ebay actually, when I was worrying over whether mine would arrive or get lost somewhere. I got my issue resolved and finally received it on 29/7. Took longer than I expected, but I'm glad they actually came through in the end. There's definitely something wrong if you haven't received yours yet, you should follow up with them again and check the status.

      • thanks mate. What you mean by I should follow up? maybe you have a different channel.

On ebay, they initially replied saying they would reach out to their startrack contact and get back to me. Since then I'm sending daily messages and getting no replies.

Their 1300 number initially refused to help saying I should contact them via ebay message, I explained I'm getting no answer and demanded them to create a ticket number…I'm calling daily but no help my ticket never gets updated..

Theirs online contact form doesn't work (http://www.dicksmith.com.au/contacts/index/) it gives and error when you try to submit…just try…yo'll get "Unable to submit your request. Please, try again late"

I've also tried to contact them via paypal…no reply…

        • Deleted

        • Well I initially tried the 1300 hotline number and email, but didnt get anywhere. Only when I sent the ebay msg that I actually got a proper response. They said they had to wait for another batch of stock delivery because of the huge number of orders. Then when another issue came up with the tracking number, they checked with Startrack for me and got back to me with an answer.

There's no point hammering them with daily msg, ask them for estimate of issue resolution timeline instead.

Could also try the social media approach? Posts on facebook or twitter is handled by another team I think, and they could help to follow up. You'll get treated nicer this way normally, since the posts are open to public.

        • +1

Tried contacting the head office directly?

          Number is (02) 9642 9100.

Sometimes they put you through to the 1300 number again, but if you explain your problem they should put you through to someone who has an idea.

    • +1

      Spewn!

Got 2 ps4's within the week, Was quite surprised.. Didnt expect stock to be existent after 1100 sales

before someone asks why 2, Because the missus and I cant share…

      • maybe get a PSTV

        • But that still only lets one person play the PS4

    $506.35 with Dual Shocks
    $442.35 console only

I am a little confused - did I do something wrong?

      Why neg my comment?

These should be the after discount prices, including delivery, come Sunday. I just thought it would be a good idea to post them now to check if the DickSmithOnline eBay store raises the prices.

So, possible prices come Sunday are:-
      $522.35 for the bundle
      $506.35 with Dual Shocks

Ignore random negs A3. Due to the hidden (gutless) nature of them it could be anything from someone with big fingers on a phone trying to give you a pos, someone you annoyed last week/month/year, General non-specific d1ckhead. Could be anything. Anyway, don't worry.

I was just concerned that I may have missed something, or that there was an error in my maths.

I am a bit like JV - at least the negs show that I am being noticed.

In my experience, DickSmith online store on eBay has the worst customer service. At the end of financial year, bought 3TB external HDD and DickSmith reminded it was out of stock almost one month later. Sorry, forget it; give me a break.

    • I'm one of the lucky ones. However, that was because I bought an Apple computer which I believed they ordered directly from the store. Nice of them to honour the 15% off sale on the new one I got though!

  • +3

argh just bought a laptop from dick smith and broke seal to charge it. Now I see this post :(

    • anyone tried shoppers protection across an ebay store? the wording on 28 degrees card is

If you buy an item in Australia using
      your 28 Degree MasterCard, and
within six months (180 days) of
purchase the item is reduced in price
by $10 or more, in the same store or
another store of the same name, we
will pay the difference between the
purchase price and the reduced price.

Question is whether the dick smith ebay store is considered the same name.

    • +1

      Hey mono
How bout buying another one. Then return that one as the one you bought before the sale.

      • I broke the seal and it looks like dickies return policy is not as generous as it used to be.

        http://www.dicksmith.com.au/shopping-with-us/our-returns-pol…

        • Spoke to a girl at the store and she said once the sale is on I can bring my receipt to the store and get a refund for the difference. We'll see what happens on monday

          @mobo:

Too bad they come with Touchwiz.

      • What is wrong with touchwiz? I have Nexus 10, Nexus 7 as well as Note 3, don't notice much difference between them.

        • +3

Not as smooth than stock Android.

and whilst it's a matter of taste, I find TouchWiz to be quite ugly.

        • +1

Like Rory said, their UI is a mess, and they're laggier than alternate devices with the same hardware.

        • +1

@rorymeister: My wife has a Galaxy S3 (2GB RAM version) and I have a Nexus 5. When she swipes to unlock her phone its noticeable lag there (and she doesnt have any heavy apps or widgets running). When she hits the power button to wake the display, again it takes up to 2 seconds for the display to show, thanks to TouchWiz. Nexus or nothing IMO.

        • -2

          @Trishool:

They've always had a wake lag. Their fragmenting Android by pumping out inferior phones with old OS'. They've only just started (within the last month) release phone with 4.4.

I'll never buy a Samsung (especially with the iClone Alpha) simply because I find their software to be incredibly bloated.

The Nexus 5 hasn't skipped a beat (other than the power button becoming faulty). Superb phone.

        • My phone takes 2s to wake up #firstworldproblems

        • @evalord: That can be the difference between answering a call and not :P

Just bought a Tab S 8.4 for $403 delivered from eglobal, can't resist any longer after playing with it in JB Hifi.

I am amazed the price difference here.. And always thought tablets were similarly priced.

    • i will definitely grab a 8.4 inch 4G one, amazing screen, shiny
