Just fly. Seriously, unless you need your car, its easier, cheaper overall and more convenient to fly.

I live in Tas and have been on the Spirit a few times, they promote it like you are going on a cruise (and charge like it too!), but the ships are in desperate need of a refurbishment, and there is little to do, especially with children.

With the price above, factor in the extra $90 or so each way for your car + food (and like every other food outlet with a captive market, its not cheap to eat on there)

Couldn't agree more. If you really need to take the Spirit because you have a car then be sure to pay extra and get yourself a cabin. I've done both and having your own cabin makes the several hour trip at least bearable. Also better to travel at night IMO as there's nothing else to do so you may as well just use the opportunity to get some sleep.

Yeah, I should have mentioned, making a day trip with kids is an absolute nightmare - far better at night where you can sleep through the journey

But by the time you pay for a cabin, you are far behind the cost of flying + hiring a car

Completely agree. I went on the a day sailing in December last year and lets just say I don't plan going on there again. The ship is very dated in urgent need of refurbishment and is much more like an over sized ferry than a cruise ship.
Unless you have to take your own car, I honestly think you are better off flying, both in terms of money spent and the overall time.

They should just build a bridge…

    • Or a Bass Strait tunnel. The Bunnel!
