Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite $29 at Coles [Limited Stock and Selected Stores]

1930

Coles is currently clearing out the Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite for $29 each.

This is a much better tablet than the one DSE was selling recently - it's cheaper, has a better screen (higher resolution and IPS - better viewing angles) more RAM and it has Bluetooth. The only downside is that stock will be limited and you'll have to go out to hopefully get one.

Details from the box:

  • Android 4.0+
  • 7" IPS WSVGA (1024x600)
  • Capacitive Touch Panel
  • Cortex-A8 CPU
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 4100 mAh battery
  • Model: S7-931w
  • Colour: White

A few more details not listed on the box:

  • Single Core 1.2 GHz CPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB Internal Flash
  • MicroSD slot for up to 32GB card
  • 5V 2A USB Power Supply and USB A to Micro USB cable included
  • Front and Rear Cameras
  • 802.11 b/g/n Wifi
  • Built in GPS receiver
  • No Phone/3G capability

Although it's only a single core CPU, it's actually not that bad to use - certainly can't complain about the performance at this price!

My wife has had one of these for about 18 months and it has been pretty good bar a few minor glitches. I picked up the last one at Coles Marsden (QLD) for the kids to use for watching videos in the car.

Edit: A few people have asked if it has GPS and it does. Some have also asked if it has 3G data capability - the units that we have don't have 3G, but some people are reporting that theirs does - maybe they got really lucky and got a different model.

Update: Multiple reports now say that price has gone up to $49

          @happychappy1:
It's not either/or, you can do all that (and have a bit of cheap fun with this tablet). Best start in life has nothing to do with expensive devices, but most often is found free.

        • @happychappy1:

You do realise that at 1024 by 600 this thing has higher resolution than standard definition TV? Using a higher res screen will give zero benefit over this device for watching SD content.

Screen res is a lot better than most digital photo frames - have you looked at them? Yes, they do use power, but it's not a huge amount. A very rough (pessimistic) estimate would be about $15 for 365 days - this thing uses less power than a low wattage light bulb…

My kids have heaps of books already - as Bruce says, it's not an either/or situation. When they're older and capable of using more features, I'll get them tablets that are better and/or cheaper than what is currently available.

For what we want the tablet for, this thing is perfect considering the price.

        • @OnTheMark: Yes, and pretty much all FTA TV in Australia is 576i.

Doesn't change the fact that it's low quality stuff.

And, regarding the photo frame use, I reckon it would be better if you spent some money framing large prints or using photo albums for smaller prints. Digital stuff doesn't last that long for memories, and can get buried among other digital crap much more easily than physical photo albums (which can be put on a shelf).

And having a smallish digital photo frame doesn't do much justice to treasured family photos. It doesn't work better than, say, a 24" desktop monitor for actually looking at the photos (from cloud storage, for instance).

I'm just saying the tablet isn't very good at all… a mediocre solution, despite the price. You could do much better, albeit not at this price, and it would be more satisfying.

Offline GPS with google maps or nearmaps to use in rough conditions that you wouldn't risk your normal device in.

      • -2

I hope you aren't relying on this as an actual navigation device for those rough conditions, as this isn't a ruggedised device. Plus, the battery life is pretty bad, so it wouldn't last all that long in those conditions as a GPS anyway.

What you should be getting instead is a Rugged GPS device, or a Rugged Phone that is IP/Mil-Spec rated.

I would advise people to get the right tool for the job, rather than get crap just because it's cheap.

        • +2

Thats the thing, I'm not relying on it so I can get away with something cheap.

        • -2

@chipstss: Then what's the point of using it in the first place?

        • +1

          @happychappy1:
I'm not reliant on it but its something that I don't have now, and not willing to splash cash for something so novelty.

        • @chipstss: what do you consider 'rough conditions'?

Anyway a GPS can be really useful for avoiding traffic. If it's the bush, it might even be a life saver if you get stranded (hence the need for good battery life).

        • @happychappy1:
Salt water, just using it on a kayak to see reef structure with satellite maps, also I didn't downvote you I'm not that immature about words on the internet.

        • -1

@chipstss: As long as what you're doing is not important, I guess it would be fine for that purpose (provided that running the thing at max brightness to counter the sun, and with the GPS on won't drain its battery too quickly).

I would put it in a couple of ziplock bags though, as it's not waterproof.

One thing you could've done, if you already had a device capable of the task, would be put it in a waterproof case that is usable and floats (or get something attached to it, which would make it float).

Make sure the solution is waterproof (at home) before taking it into the field.

  • Anyone find stores in Melbourne North having it? Not at roxburgh park nor Greensboro :(

  • No luck at either hurstville store.
They did have the 7" pendo pad for $39, 8" pendo pad for $49.

Not sure how they compare. The 8" one seemed to be dual core with 1gb ram and 8gb rom

  • I have one of this tablet installed on my car, pretty cool. play music, check map, etc. a bit slow, but think about the price….

    • That is the scanned price or the shelf price?

  • +3

I bought 3 of these back in April, when they were $59. For my 4, 5 and 7 year olds. They work well, for low demanding games, playing music. Still going strong, but one USB charger has packed-in, and one of them has a poor charger connection, so I have to wiggle it a little for it to work. Probably down to the kids more than anything else.

    Great screen (for it's price).

  • 4 at Lilydale. Not marked as on sale but scan correct. They also have the clearance pen do pads (7 and 8 inch)

Just got three from Chipping Norton NSW thanks OP (great xmas gift for cousins & nieces)
Confirmed has 3G (able to make & receive phone calls), bluetooth (to use for in car connection+audio etc.), way more great value than buying chepo pre-paid phone, due to this $29 price factor.
Coles cashier told he also bought this tablet few years ago for $129 (using employee discount) and still going strong till now.
      Review:
      http://youtu.be/PGUBUhX8faQ

    • the one I got doesn't have 3g..

    • Only I report of "Confirmed has 3G". Think we would have heard from others if this device came with 3G.

Six cartons I checked showed Model S7-931w Colour: White Notes: 4GB WiFi

If timhobart would like to post photo of label on box to show different model/ Notes, that would settle the matter.

Also a similar model number but not the same has cyanogenmod support http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2045808 I wonder how hard it would be to port that ROM to this or if there is already an existing ROM that I couldn't find.

  • None at Coles Daylesford……

I rang a store and asked if they had any 7 inch tablets in stock. The lady said I probably want the Vet next door.

None at Elsternwick and Caulfield Plaza.

    • +2

oh my goodness, some of the people attending the phones are hopeless lol. half the time had 0 idea what i was talking about and the line just went dead after waiting for like 5min. Some of them are really helpful though so not all too bad.

I'm fairly certain I saw one yesterday on the customer service desk at Doncaster. Was slightly distracted by my 4.5yr old twins,2.5 year old and newborn and the fact that I was in Coles picking up the groceries I forgot to take after paying in the morning.

That's my life story. So try Doncaster.

    • Don't worry, you'll grow out of it.

  • +3

    Anyone recommend cases for these?

At $29 it can be dropped and it's no great loss, but another $29 replacement won't be around if that happens!

    • +1

You're probably better off buying a second one as a spare!

  • +1

Southland Vic said they just sold the last one
Bentleigh only has the pendo pad

  • +1

Just went to Coles Burwood One (VIC), and been told that they might have new stock coming tomorrow, gonna check again tomorrow morning.

    • +1

I dont think so, it's a clearance item which they probably wont re-stock it anymore…

the staff is probably just being nice as they don't have any stocks left

  • +1

    Anyone in WA got it?

    • +1

I got the last 2 at Flinders Square (Dogswamp). I phoned about 10 stores before I got lucky.

      • +1

        Lucky you :-)

    • +2

Got one in Kalamunda at about 1600 yesterday. They still had some left. Great value for $29. I'm going to use it for an in-vehicle GPS.

      • Called few stores South of the River, WA. No Stock. They only sell Pendopad :-(
        Anyone from SOR, WA please?

        • I just picked up one from Gateways. They had the Pendo's too. Not sure if any left of these ones tho.

        • @El Taco:

I called same store around 11AM and they said out of stock (?) :-(
          Very disappointing.

i regretted buying DGTEC ones from DSE deal, but i didnt regret buying HUAWEI from Coles. Much better tablet in terms of build quality, screen and stability! top find OP!

Got one from Coles Pyrmont NSW 2009 and i believe it is the last one too.

Nephews and nieces gifts are now sorted! the naughty ones will get DGTEC while the good one gets the HUAWEI :)

    Brisbane South East stock report…
COORPAROO 3 (white WiFi only, 2 others on hold & staff interested after I demonstrated mine)
None at Carindale, Upper Mt Gravatt (Garden City), Cannon Hill, both Capalaba stores.

Compared with the DS DgTech (known as DodgieTech to repairers, whereas I have had no problems with quite a few Huawei mobile devices)..
Nicer looking, better screen, better build, slightly heavier, charger has USB socket rather than attached lead, charges via micro-USB rather than odd plug, Bluetooth, GPS, … much better :-)

Had voucher for triple points & paid by ING for 5% rebate.

    • I tried Coles at Indooroopilly, Corinda, Sunnybank, Sunnybank South/Pinelands, Sunnybank Hills, Browns Plains, and none had the Huawei for $29 or Pendo Pad 8".

However, Indooroopilly and Corinda still had a few of the 7" Pendopads for $39.

  • Coles@ Corinda Q. Have Pendopad 10 inch, 8dual core, and 7 one,

So sorry the photos failed in my old Samsung, partly unactivated boost live,

the tablets are 2 X jellybean, one ice cream. Cost 2 X $39 and the other $49.

Help ? Are these worth using - read many kindle books, game play for my elderly downs syndrome sister (severely handicapped ). Use in car audio books.

Then with choice, the 8“ was $119? seems an opportunity.

  • Just grabbed 2 :)

  • +2

Picked up the last one at Castle Plaza, SA :) now to figure out how sell/return the DGTec

    • I'm in the same boat haha. Sounds like a lot of the DGTEC ones have been DOA…. or could just use both :P

In the not too distant future, bookshelves will be known as tabletshelves.

  • just bought one from coles knox
pretty sure i grabbed the last one
most likely returning it if i could. I got it for the kids. Just tried to run minion rush and it was slow. Thats not the bad thing what bad is once the game starts there is no way to exit out that i could find. Maybe im just clueless but ive double tapped the bottom of the tablet which before the game fully loaded it would allow you to go back to the main screen but once the game was fully running that stopped working. Just worried this is going to be the issue on alot of apps and all you are doing is forcing it to shut down and re-opening constantly

    • +1

Try this… Swipe up from bottom to show status bar. This unit covers it to give more screen real estate when using full screen in app. When first using tablet, a pop-up suggest that. Worked with the pre-installed Angry Birds.

      • +1

thanks bruce worked that out as well hahaha
going to keep it now…its fairly decent for $29 tablet

    • ok dont mind me :)
if you slide your finger from bottom of the screen up it will bring up the back and home button

    • On takeing back the "tablets" The lovely person who showed me and priced the tablets they had said - policy was these items , if opened could not be returned.

Where's my fine knife, but do not have much luck with the clear cicular hardish seel !

Anyone know of this policy? Thanks

      • +1

As it is highly unlikely any staff would remember what the original clear security seals looked like (now there is probably no stock left), you could remove them carefully & replace with similar ones. I often have a few just in case (but never had the need to try) ;-)

  • +7

Went to Coles burwood (melb) last night and ask the sales representative at the mobile phone section if they sell any tablets. He points me to isle 3 where all the panadoles are.

Needless to say there were none in stock.

  • -3

I just wonder, would you waste $29 on a garbage like this which will most likely be either given away or sit in your drawer or possibly in garage. Instead take your partner or someone in the family out for lunch/dinner and make it a worthwhile.

    • +5

I'm happy with it. I also love going out for meals - on way to restaurant lunch now. But $29 is a very cheapo meal out - wouldn't impress me! That's just a big feed at Maccas :-(
It is possible to enjoy both. But tomorrow the meal is just a fading memory & a shit.

  • Coles burnt bridge has more stocks.

  • Coles Rhodes just stocked up, my mate told me they had around 10 left.

    • Just check at rhodes coles nsw. No huawei at there bro..

Coles Rouse Hill had 30 and sold out in hours yesterday, girl there said what is it with all these enquiries the stocks was here for 2 years! Explained OzBargain to her :)

  • so does it actually has 3G or not?
