Let's just say that CFL is far far worse for the environment than incandescent and LED globes. If you don't give a toss about what could happen in your house or what will happen to the environment after disposal, they're ok, except for cold weather performance.
I just find that more toxins leaking into the soil can only be bad for our future. Oh, and don't eat them - as Snoop says.

And wouldn't CFL be better for the environment than incandescent if they reduce the amount of coal burnt to supply electricity?

Thin-film PV cells contain a number of more toxic materials than those used in traditional silicon photovoltaic cells, including gallium arsenide, copper-indium-gallium-diselenide, and cadmium-telluride. If not handled and disposed of properly, these materials could pose serious environmental or public health threats.
And that's only the panels, don't forget the inverter produces radiation as does a smart meter, microwave etc…
Time to start investing in a tin foil hat.
Are these dimmable?
It is extremely difficult to dim CFL lights due to the mechanics of how they work. The light we see is generated via a chemical reaction within the globe from a combination of gases. Essentially the light we see is gas within the globe, and this is why it is difficult to then manipulate the light the gas gives off. Some people may claim to have dimmable CFL's however i would take that with a grain of salt. No these globes are not dimmable.

Would these be ok for outdoor use? Undercover, in an alfresco?
In an Alfreso area that would be ok. Note the fitting is made from die cast aluminium so it isn't going to last in harsh outdoor conditions, however in the area you describe you will be fine for many years. When your plan is ready give us a call, if you have any lefy we would be happy to move them to you at a bargain price.
I've got something similar under a semi enclosed front porch, but because of humidity/dew/fog in the air, you may get some surface rust starting to appear after a while though!

Can you replace the bulb with led or halogen in future if need be?
Yes of course. The fitting is GU10 and the globe slips in and out as you please. All you would need to do is buy a GU10 globe and make the swap. No electrician needed for that part of it either.
I just bought 38 of them in warm white… this is very similar to the one i have purchased from beacon lighting couple years back and the ones from Beacon costed me $20 per pack and that was half price too.
I am not sure about these one but beacon ones can change to LEDS.
You can swap over to LED on these as well very easily. Just take the globe out and plug in a GU10 LED. No sparky required.
These would be worth it for the holder only to put gu10 leds in . Cfl gu10s are horrible.
I would think it'd work out at a similar price. I used to buy the white ones (with 50w halogens) in 4 packs for $30.
2 years ago i put LED gu10s in and it look a lot worse than CFL after warmed up.
LED Technology must have improved in the last 2 years.
yes they have.. well not so much LED technology (has been improvement over 2 yrs but not huge) but the application of them, and affordability has really surged forward
LED's are perfect for down lighting as the light source(s) are small and "flat" meaning you can put a simple lense in front of them and create whatever beam pattern/angle you want, with minimal loss. CFL's are not. you're trying to squeeze a spiral of glass tube which emits its light in all direcitons inside a small space (i.e inside the GU10 housing), then reflect as much of its light back out the end of it.. This drives efficiency right down, and a lot of light output is wasted just being absorbed inside the housing.
Shame they're not 90mm diameter.
I just bought 28 of these, do they need housing when installed in the roof near insulation, or is the kit fine as it is?
No heat can is needed for CFL so you will be fine as long as they are installed by a licensed electrician.
