Cheap but wow 2gb ram with w8?

  • +1

    nuc cpu

2gb is no big deal… theres an empty slot

    • True yes.

      • +1

Also is the mini PCI-e accessible to upgrade the wifi to AC+BT4 (w/ Intel 7260)

        • +12

i'm about to shit on your parade:

the Celeron has only 1 dimm slot

          its only 10/100

the single VLSI chipset doesnt allow cpu upgrades, its all bga

bright side there is hdmi but i dont know how well the 2830 does video

there's no possibility of upgrading the wifi

          excerpt:

          Single antenna support

Support for the following WLAN formats:

          ● Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11bgn 1x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
          ● Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11bgn 1x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
          ● Ralink RT3290LE 802.11bgn 1x1 Wi-Fi + BT 4.0 Combo Adapter
          ● QCA 9565 802.11bgn 1x1 Wi-Fi + BT4.0 Combo Adapter

it only support rubbish n150 adapters

HP encrypt their bios so there's no possibility of breaking the whitelist

it's also 2.2kg (which makes no sense on a 9w cpu chassis)

          Good luck out there!

        • +1

@tonyjzx: the 2830 is the same as all the "media center" NUCs that are floating around, should do 1080p just as well as them.. :)

        • +1

          @tonyjzx:

It's a bit of a crapshoot, but there are WiFi adapters that are not necessarily listed for that specific model that still work. It seems the whitelist depends on the BIOS image, which is somewhat shared between models. I managed to get an Intel 6235AN.HMWWB card on mine - actually, their support chat guy was nice enough to let me know it should work, though I don't know how sure he was of that.

      • Actually appears to be not true.

The spec sheet says the I3/I5 version has 2 slots, the Pentium/Celeron version has only one.

Good price though, trying to talk myself into buying one.

Just can't think of a use for another laptop.

        • +1

Beaten by tonyjzx to the single SODIMM slot comment.

        • +1

Ultimately doesn't really matter does it?
So just one slot to jack out and change over as opposed to just adding more to a second slot but it aint that big a deal/
Really wouldnt be comfortable with less than 4GB in W8 these days.

        • @King Tightarse:

Maybe matters if you want dual channel w/ 2 slots?

        • +1

          @grab_ur_freebies:
Of course that would be better but at this price spec point it's more about achieving enough RAM to pass. Would just swap it out for 4 gigs. Just noticed low volt, so that would be around $45

        • @King Tightarse:

Yeah true. Just pointing that out. CPU, GPU, RAM needs to back each other up or there will be a bottleneck. In other words 'high-end' HW needs to exist with other high-end HW or system won't be as optimised/efficient.

        • It's worse if you bought a nice and cheap new thin/light laptop almost 2 years ago with 2GB ram assuming I could upgrade, found out it is soldered on. Fail. Would have been happy to only have one slot and upgrade to 4GB at least. Learnt my lesson on that one.

  • Are we sure its an N2830? According to google that has a base clock freq of 2.16 and uses DDR3L RAM. Where'd you get ur specs?

    • Just read the PDF specsheet. Uses DDR3L ram.

    • Riczter, good catch.

Processor information seems to be different on different sites.

Processor Intel Celeron N2830 (1.86GHz, 1MB Cache) based on LMC.com.au
      OR
Processor Intel Celeron N2830 (2.16GHz, 2.41GHz Turbo) based on TechBuy

The model number of the product is K1C53PA

I am not 100% which information from the above is correct.
      Can anybody confirm?

  • +1

    When does the code expire?

    • The coupon has been valid since Aug 1.
Then it stopped working few days prior to Aug 31.

They have restarted it now, so I am guessing it would continue until about Sep 25th or so.

If the item is sold out, you could possibly use the code on other items, as it's a side-wide 20% off code (except for Elitebooks, new launches, etc).

  • What does one use these things for?
    Wing Commander 3?

    • people who want the cheapest possible laptop and only do light surfing and email

      • +2

        Exactly.
Or a mate who needs one for work. Cheap as possible Email, office, browsing and some video playback. Should be fine for his requirements.

        • +1

Yep. If you don't need the screen real estate, storage, ODD, full size usb ports & keyboard just get a tablet.

        • +1

Well, people who get this as mentioned above who want a laptop design with big 15" screen, proper keyboard and lot's of ports, for this super cheap price. You could say a really big cheap netbook for basic emails, word/office stuff for people like me who hate squinting at a small screen or constantly pinching and zooming a small touchscreen ( looking at you T100 ).

  • nice

  • +2

Great deal, would be perfect for many people I know who don't NEED anything more than a basic computer.

If Windows 8 isn't to your liking, you can easily make it more like Windows 7 by installing something like Classic Shell (free program, brings back the 'normal' start menu).

  • +4

Bought a few. With SSD, it should be good enough for basic computing.

  • +2

I have one, and it's good enough to run Design Spark Mechanical 3D.

    • +1

What is the screen like Chris? How would you rate it?

      • +1

Perfectly adequate for everything that I do.

        • Just checked, and mine has 4GB RAM.

        • @ChrisLevo:
          Thanks for that Chris.
You must have a slightly different model variant if yours cane with 4GB.
          Two memory slots eh?
Will have to wait and see what I actually receive but it would be great if that's true, then I can just whack another 2GB in and an SSD and it will be good to go.

    • Are you sure you have the K1C53PA model, and not some other one within the range (ex. i3/i5 one)?

  • +6

$312.80 total cost with cheapest 4GB stick of ram ($44 on static ice). suddenly it doesnt sound that great anymore seeing JBhifi had laptops with this CPU or better for $326 on special a few weeks ago from better brands with better specs and 4gb's of ram

    • Good point vid. But still ok price at present if your happy to use as is, or sell 2GB ram on ebay. Not sure about better brand? At the bottom of the range they would all be entry level materials with similar support. Only some brands offer good features such as Asus instant 2 second on and/or usb3 etc.

      • Then again - most of the others have at least one USB3! The HP page says this has one, but the specs above don't. With 2 Gb soldered in, at some stage any buyer is going to need to drop in an SSD and will need USB3 for storage……

On the plus side, HP also rate it for Ubuntu.

        • +1

Do we know the RAM is soldered in?

        • It does have one USB 3.0. I don't know why OP listed as if it has 3 USB 2.0, but on the data sheet, it says it has at least one USB 3.0.

        • @motor89:
When I search for the part number K1C53PA specifications I get 3xUSB2
Here it is at Shopping Express:
          http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/hp-250-dual-core-n2830…

        • @King Tightarse: Yep, and Landmark Computers also list it as 3 x USB2 - and 3 cell battery :-(. What with the ` baytrail' Atom = Celeron rebadging and the I5 now being a dual core it looks like trade descriptions are now Worlds Best Practice [tm]. What with it being Win8.1 with Bing[ one more step to take before it is useful] and HP being one of the biggest sources of Zombie crud you can pay to have removed, this thing has less going for it than most.

        • +1

Anyone can confirm about the soldered on RAM? That would be a deal breaker for many.

        • @King_Tightarse
Fair enough. Other websites say HP 250 G3(K1C53PA) has one USB 3.0, two USB 2.0 though.

          http://www.speedyshipping.com.au/epages/shop.sf/?Locale=en_A…

          http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/?ObjectPath=/Sho…

And on the data sheet from HP website actually states it has one USB 3.0 regardless whether it is Celeron/Pentium or i3/i5

          http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=4AA5-2…

        • @motor89:
Guess we wont know until someone actually receives one.

        • +1

Looking at the data sheet, two slots for i3/i5 and one for the Celeron/Pentium of up to 8GB max. All good there I would say. And one x usb3. And upgradable hhd! Bargain.

  • Can this machine play 1080p videos smoothly?

    • Maybe, but the screen res is 1366x768.

    • yes.. so long as its not a 8gb bluray rip.. 5gb files and under 1080p should be ok

  • +1

I don't get it… I googled Intel® Celeron® Processor N2830 and it's a dual-core 2.16Ghz processor? That would be pretty decent actually for basic tasks (bearing in mind these are ultra low power… no idea about the architecture).

    • To get a good broad idea of cpu performance, just google the passmark score which is really reliable to give you a start. Don't go by the Ghz or number of cores too much, do a benchmark check such as passmark. This cpu is ok for the price, better than a lot of the AMD E series or older Atoms, just don't expect too much from this. Will do basic stuff like emails, internet ( no more than a handfull of tabs open at once ), word, youtube etc. as long as you don't push multitasking too much. As a plus, there is still a DVD drive on the HP, handy for some ( portable DVD player ). For a bit more $ here is an alternative: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-F502CA-XX081H-Slim-Laptop-In…

    • It's not actually Celeron, but Atom processor(Bay Trail).

Performance is pretty weak since they have sacrificed IPC(instructions per clock) for TDW. So no matter how high the cpu is clocked, it is actually slower than Haswell processors.

      • Good points. But Intel calls it a Celeron: http://ark.intel.com/products/81071/Intel-Celeron-Processor-…
No matter what you call it, passmark score is 1020 : http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Celeron+N2830+…
This is on par with the so popular Asus T100 quad core Z3740, which is a good handy unit, but stuck on 2GB ram and slowish eMMC hhd. Put a proper faster SSD ( less than $90 ) in this, get an external hhd usb3 case ( under $10 on ebay ), optional 4GB ram, and you have a decent efficient light ( 2.1 KG ) laptop with a big 15" screen for under $400+- with portable 500GB hhd.

        • +1

Sounds like an idea machine for a uni student for notes, word processing etc :)

        • +2

Their performances are similar? That's actually a disappointing. Z3740 is an Atom processor and designed to consume far less power than N2830. N2830, the Celeron processor supposes to be FASTER than Z3740, the Atom processor.

Intel can claim that they are "Celeron" processors, but in reality, architecture wise, performance wise, N2XXX or N3XXX series are no more than Atom processors.

Don't get me wrong, I got one from this deal. I agree most of your points(probably except that Asus T100 being popular), especially about installing a decent SSD. The laptop should be good enough for 90% of the population. However, don't pretend N2830 is a proper Celeron processor.

        • +1

          @motor89:
          Agree.
This is more like a big netbook with a full sized screen and keyboard, but with an SSD it should be a handy bump-proof machine for Word/general surfing.

  • Any word as to when this deal ends?

  • +1

Browsing around their site looking for bargains. It is so badly organised that it borders on taking the piss.
    This one for example:
    http://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Product.aspx?pdetai…
No info on the processor. Datasheet is missing. Googling shows it might be a Celeron. Hopeless!
But still a touchscreen basic lappy for $439 if that 20% code works
OK found some specs at Shopping Express:
    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/hp-home-notebook-15-r0…

There is this too for $559 but no idea re specs.

Ordered this morning, checked order status, cancelled, phoned in, had to reorder over the phone, credit card problem master card then, technical problem, HP will ring back Monday, not looking good but said they would honour the price. One would think HP would have tech stuff sorted. Suggest you check status from confirmation email if buying.

HP looks like they have just finished the deal. For a better performing cheap laptop running haswell cpu, 4GB ram, usb3 etc. this is a really good deal from Dick Smith for the HP ChromeBook 14" 4GB version now on clearance price of $260 with the GIVEDAD40 $40 discount code if you add a $1 item, and can find one for click and collect in your area, or extra to deliver. As long as your happy with the Peach Coral or White Silver. I have one of these as a bit of fun to wet my toas in Chrome O/S, really happy with build/form factor, very zippy, great stamina and looks great. This is by far the best price I have seen worldwide for this model. I have never listed a deal on Ozbargain yet, but would be happy for someone to post this great deal. Enjoy.

  • I'm currently on the lookout for a new laptop to replace my 8-year old Dell (still running on XP still lol), reading some comments here not sure if I should spend a little more to get a slightly better spec laptop? I have a budget of $350-400, this price looks tempting and appears to suit my needs- normal office processing, web browsing and online streaming, no gaming requirements.

I'm guessing this laptop would be sufficient for such basic usage, hoping it would last me for another 7-8 years (I'm guessing laptops these days are not quite built for durability).

    Any advice is much appreciated!

    • +1

It's a not bad price, but you'll find JB Hifi running sales on occasionally with these sorts of prices.

It'll do web surfing, word processing and video playback fine, but don't expect to have a few windows open as it'll start to lag. I have built a Intel NUC with 120GB SSD and 8GB ram, it runs everything fine but starts to become slow once you open another program.

With regards to age, I find most laptops do last. Just that some owners don't take care of them by throwing them into their bag or car hence faulty HDD, keyboard faulty, etc. But hey If you take care of your stuff, it usually lasts quite a long time.

If your currently laptop is doing just fine, I don't see why you need to upgrade. If you want it to be a tad faster just put in a SSD hard drive and it'll essentially run like a new laptop.

      • Wasn't aware that SSD can be used to replace normal hard drives! Will definitely look into it- laptop is fine apart from lagging speed and two keys have come off the keyboard- annoying but I'll e able to live with it :)

  • Found this, fingers crossed.

    http://www.estore.com.au/hp-250-n2830-15-6-2gb-500gb-w8-164-…
