AMEX Platinum Edge CC. $0 Annual Fee (First Year). Free Return Flight & 5000 Bonus Points

720

Hello OzB faithful.

This seems like a good deal, I'm in Adelaide and can fly as far as Brisbane return, which would pay for the $195 annual fee each year in itself. I couldn't find anywhere in their T&C that says if you take your free flights in the first year that you can't cancel the card afterwards, though someone might have better eyes than me.

The only thing I can't find, is if "Bank Issued AMEX" customers are eligible. If anyone can find out, I will update the post.

Apply by 31 January 2015 28 February 2015, and be approved to pay no annual fee for the first year1 ($195 thereafter). Take advantage today. New Card Members only.

Take off with a complimentary Virgin Australia domestic return flight to one of our selected destinations (seat plus bag), available to you now and each membership year.3 And we mean complimentary – there are no hidden fees or surprise charges. Anyone had success having the fees waived in following years?

    • -1

Best you can do for a 'Platinum' card unless you're on some kind of home loan with the bank that issued it is to refund rewards points to cover the fee.

      • I think ozbargainers should not be paying any fees for mortgage loans.

        • +4

I think ozbargainers should not be paying any fees.

    • I have used the free Qantas lounge passes on some cards to sell on ebay to offset the card cost - that is quite effective. i suppose that is the problem with these Free Flights cards…

    • A few years ago I had this, and they offered me a discount, but not a full waiving. From memory, I think they offered be from the then $150 annual fee down to $100 ($50 discount).

Now, the question is, if I haven't had the card for a few years, does that make me eligible to apply as a 'new' card holder?

      • I would think yes.."This offer excludes existing or previous Card Members who have held any American Express Card in the last 12 months."

  • How many ff points do you get on conversion?

    • +2

Amex points are generally 1:1 conversion. You have to pay extra to transfer to QFF with this card..

      • -1

I thought it's normally 1 reward point equal 0.5 frequent flyer points?

        • +3

          Not with Amex issued cards.

        • @blandest:

How many points is it for a typical domestic flight with reward points?

        • +1

@strikerzebra: Generally around 34,000 points PER-SYD return. Depends on the carrier but it's in that region. Best value free flight (included with card) is PER-SYD/MEL Return…

          http://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Redeem/Airlines…

        • @blandest:

Cheers, I definitely need a new direct Amex card, I had a direct amex a few months ago and cancelled and was going to wait a year to signup again but this offer seems too good. I might even get the bonus points again as my friend cancelled and signed up a few months after and got the bonus points for an amex direct card.

        • @strikerzebra: Know that each year the point/flight goes up like inflation too

        • @strikerzebra: This offer excludes existing or previous Card Members who have held any American Express Card in the last 12 months.

        • @Marlboro Man:

Yeh I read that, sometimes they still honour it though

  • +1

The only thing I can't find, is if "Bank Issued AMEX" customers are eligible. If anyone can find out, I will update the post.

This is a new card application so whether you have a Bank Issued Amex or not is irrelevant (except for Amex's credit check). The benefits you mentioned like the free flight & bonus points are only for this card.

It's a pretty good card if you spend a bit as supermarkets & petrol stations. No annual fee makes it far better value when you factor in the free return flight. But if you're wedded to Qantas Points then this card isn't for you.

    • What can you get if you're not going for flights? I'll never spend enough for flight and my citibank is currently worth about 0.75% in points.

      • Pointless if you're not IMO.
Had this card for a few years and use it for the flights. Didn't use my flight last year and just went to Noosa last week with the mrs. (Used last years and this years free flights)

      • Its only worth 0.74% when you redeem points at David Jones or for Gift Cards.
Worth 1% if you redeem at Webjet (but then you're stuck with their fees).

      • +1

Free flight for one person every year, you don't need points to redeem the free flight.

    • So bank issued AMEX are considered separate, because this is a "new application"? Keen to know too.

  • +1

Applied for this card last week. Didn't notice this promo then but hope it was on. Will be calling them for sure if not.

    • Hi Herbo, please let me know how you go. I'm in the same boat.

      • Ok so I applied last week, got the approval email on Saturday just gone. Phoned them just now to check on this offer and they said they cannot apply this offer as I applied prior. Pissed off, missed it by a couple of days.

If anyone else is in this boat suggest you call them anyway and take your chance. Post here how you go with that.

      • +3

I just called Amex. They were able to reverse the $195 fee. The guy was nice enough to also give me an extra 500 reward points for the inconvenience.

FYI my card was activated about 2 weeks ago.

        • Thanks for posting that. Looks like I'll be back on the phone to them this arvo. I haven't received my card so it's not even activated yet.

        • Called them again. Told them I knew of others that had just missed this promo and had been awarded first year free but they still wouldn't waive the annual fee. Told me some story that under another promotion I am eligible for 10,000 points so they gave me that. Worth the extra call I guess. Thems the breaks

    • I applied for this card last Tuesday and I'm sure I did see the same promo as well. I also got the card on Friday as I expected it to arrive this week.

  • The T&C are a bit confusing:

"Card Members who wish to convert their existing American Express account to Platinum Edge will not be eligible for the offer. There is no annual fee for up to 4 Additional Cards. This offer excludes existing or previous Card Members who have held any American Express Card in the last 12 months."

At first it looks like you can get it if you hold a Amex but just don't convert it, confusing so I rang up. Was told I would have the fee waived. Asked him to put a note that he told me that in case they charge the fee…

  • Has anyone with the ANZ Black FF successfully applied for this card?
Id be interested to know if we can being the fact we have a bank issued AMEX already..

    • I have had 2 different AMEX cards concurrently before, AMEX mentioned the maximum was 2 AMEX cards so you should be ok

  • +1

So this free flight…is it per calendar year or is it 365 days from signup?

I.e. I'm assuming I could fly to perth on 30th Dec, return on 31st Dec. Then go off on another trip 1st Jan?

    • +3

It's 365 days from signup, so you have to remember when you signed up because if you don't use it it won't roll over.

      • +3

Actually, you have a 2 week grace period after the 365 days. This means that if you wait til this point, you can stack it to get two tickets, one for yourself and for partner/friend/whoever.

        • +1

I just rolled over my year and had a 2 week grace period. I was also offered another extension of 2 weeks, but I was ready to book by then. So you can extend to a total of 4 weeks I think.

        • +1

Yep, they are pretty flexible if you just call them an ask.

  • So Two BAnk Axex cards and applying for this is fine as above comment?

  • +1

Just a word of warning, if you choose to earn QFF points you do not get the free flight!

    • Where is that stated?

      • I can't find it explicitly stated but a number of friends have been caught out when they rang Amex to redeem the flight, they were told because they transfer points to QFF they were no longer entitled to the free Virgin flight.

        • I am surprised at this - I had this card when it first came out and I had QFF points and redeemed the free flight too, maybe they have changed it since then

      • It's stated in the docs I received. No virgin flight for qff. If at application you chose qff, it wouldn't be too late to call and go on accent and get flight

    • +1

I can confirm this. Was only told over the phone when signing up for the card, otherwise I didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

  • +1

It'll only let you fly Perth to eastern cities and back, not vice versa. AFF confirmed!

    • +1

You can look up the route for yourself here:

      http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/platinum_…

    • crap serious? I just applied based on flying from Melb then using it for return leg…. Argh.

    • +2

I can confirm a few things for everyone as my wife and I have had one each for a few years now:
      - Easy to book the free flight if you plan ahead (wife needs to book separately but not a big issue really)
      - Very handy for Xmas flights or peak periods where flight cost are high
      - Checked luggage included
      - Can't link QFF so we don't use this card for points, just the free flight (you can of course link Virgin)
      - Perth route only available to WA residents
      - Once free flight is booked, you can amend the booking but you pay around $80 fee for the privilege

      • +2

Just called today, was told amendment costs are now $107.

        • +2

Cool, they've increased it. One other interesting thing that I forgot to mention, the passenger does not have to be the cardholder, allowing you to book the free flight for your partner, a family member or friend

    • although this is true, for those travelling often this has little bearing, because you just pay for the flight to Perth, and then use this return flight for return to eastern states and the flight back to Perth for next trip :)

they don't place restrictions on your usage, just that if you want to go anywhere near Perth, the flight originates from there

  • +1

I would still get this card with the annual fee at $149 via a professional association.

You get 35,000 points for signing up and a discounted annual fee of $149, plus lower min income $45,000.00 v $50,000.00. Less hassle in terms of credit checks. At 1 cent per point valuation that is $350 worth of benefits right there.

    • Which professional association?

      • There was one with ACS. Not sure if it is offered anymore.

Then doctors and accountants can apply thru their professional org.

        There's also bmw (I think)

Edit: there's also engineers Australia. example: http://www.partnersamericanexpress.com.au/ea/

        • Cheers I'll take a look

        • Also Law Society (solicitors)

  • Its a good card, mind you it's been around for a long time and they keep changing the bonuses. Mine came with 20k bonus points and has a $149 fee, I got it maybe 4 years ago. Otherwise, its all the same.

  • +1

    Applied! Thanks OP!

Probably will cancel ANZ Qantas now, I have no use for the points unfortunately (never fly Qantas).

  • +2

Be very careful when using the travel insurance attached with this card, had a shocking experience with them take out other insurance when travelling they will do everything not to pay out your claim, the free flight is good but you only get 1 way to perth from melb, card doesn't come with free extended warranty on electricals, no best price guarantee scheme, no 90day purchase security insurance, Interest rate is high & plenty of outlets still sting customer 3% for using AMEX, Even though I have this card id avoid it, personally think the ANZ platinum rewards is better value you also get first year annual fee free

    • +1

Australian Business Traveller named it as having the worst included travel insurance back in 2010.

      http://www.ausbt.com.au/avoid-american-express-platinum-edge…

    • Love the card. Best customer service. Lots of goodwill waivers. All the ozbargain statement credits. Free flight each year to surrounding capital cities. 3 points per dollar at woolies.

  • I've had this card for a few years and only just used a free flight, ADL-SYD return.
Straight forward booking through AMEX. Flight availability each year from your anniversary month.
The flight's available to use/book was better then using (separate) points to redeem through Virgin. (I was co-ordinating the free flight through the card for me and via points for my kids)
No status or miles points earn on the Amex flight though.

This card is an AMEX only offer, not through banks.

  • Hmm I just got new cc maybe 2-3 weeks ago, would it be bad/instantly rejected if I apply for this one?

    • Yeah, possibly there is a thread on Whirlpool and AFF of people getting rejected simply because they are applying for multiple cc s.

    • +1

Not necessarily. I did some switching with my credit cards in the last 4 months (2x new cards opened, one with ANZ and one with CBA) and was instantly approved by AMEX this morning on this offer.

  • Pretty poor flight options from Sydney. What can these 5000 points be used for? How much is it in dollars? Thanks.

    • 5000 points roughly $50

      • +1

a Melbourne Sydney flight is typically around $160 and costs 8000 points so I think that it is worth a bit more IMHO

        • sorry, this comment was in reference to a virgin domestic flight

sometimes amex also has a 15% transfer bonus for virgin points which i try and wait for. There haven't been any for a good 6-12 months though so might not come around anymore

I have worked out that if you purchase on ebay during the 4 points/$ promotion and use this amex getting a total of 5 points the redemption rate can be extremely good for the spend

ie working @ 8000 points for a $160 virgin flight, it works out you spend around $1600, a return of 10% if you actually use it for this purpose only. if you take any seats or upgrades etc then this can drop quite quickly but i am still able to achieve 5-6% returns quite consistently.

    • Not sure if you're aware, but the 5000 points are not used to get the flights. You get a free flight a year just for having the card, and it is not related to the points you have/earn.

    • From Sydney, flight options are Melb, Adel, Port Macquarie, Hervey Bay, Sunshine coast, Coffs Harbour and Brisbane. 5000 points is short of a $50 gift card.

  • Does this card have lounge access passes ? Couldn't see anywhere

  • +2

this is the card CA's get - subsidised @ $99. well worth it

    • Not anymore, the CA offer has annual fee of $149 (but they do get more points).

  • Great deal/card. Have been thinking of getting this for a while and I guess this is now even more incentive to get it.

  • Amex increased the fee for this card from $149 to $195.
For current holders if you ring them you will be able to get renewals at the old $149.

  • Queries for ozbargainers,

is it just or same as everyone else ?
Input all details and uploaded all documents for what they require, but not a single email confirmation or application
progress sent to email provided, except for a app ID which i didn't save at the end of application.

But from i recall it did say takes around 5-10 days???/

    • I applied online and got an sms later that day saying it was approved (this was on a sunday). Didn't submit any supporting documentation.

  • They will send by post.

My application was rejected, quite annoyed to be honest.

  • +1

I am so applying for this right now. Thanks for the find!

  • +1

Just in case you missed my post yesterday, the American Express Referral scheme (which has been out of operation for over 6 months) was reactivated by AMEX with basically no fanfare. For the Platinum Edge, you can get a greater bonus if you sign up through a referral link (10k points vs 5k points) and the referrer gets a bonus for referring you (10k points).

If anyone is looking to sign up for the Platinum Edge I'd be grateful if you could use my referral link (see the AMEX Referral Link Wiki at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals ).

    Thanks
