EC's on fire today! Thanks again.

    • +6

lol .. Just wanted to post a deal on the chromecast for Chthonic

      • +16

To the doofus that negged my thank you… you must be a very sad & lonely person.

  • +8

About 50% of my orders from Dick Smith get cancelled so I've stopped ordering from them! Nice work!

    • +14

yeah, Dick suffers from premature cancellation sometimes

  • Breathe, EC, breathe.

  • Can I ask why people want one of these?

Without netflix and Hulu and with unbranded android sticks being so cheap; whats the advantage?

    • I would like to know to!

I thought the main use was to play all your shows through the tv. But I found that certain shows wont play due to restrictions. So you could purchase an entire series from Google Play and it wont work on your TV.

What can you use Chromecast for ?

      • +1

I have plex installed on my PC (free). I then have multiple HD's with movies/tv shows connected to PC. Using a chromecast I can then stream all my movies/shows to any dumb tv and control it all via my tablet or phone.

        • I tried the same setup, also tried videostream, BubblePnp.

I just can't get it to stream trouble free, the main problem with my setup I think is it needs to transcode the video file formats. But even native formats mp4, still lag.

          Either I have a $hity modem/router (its a cheapo, but has wireless N).
Or Chromecast just sucks at transcoding, (can't really blame my PC, cause I looked at the CPU usage when it was supposedly transcoding before sending it to chromecast, it only uses 10% average with 25% peak.)

I've just given up, cox its not worth any more time trying to figure it out.

I'm looking at a Android TV/media box now as an alternative, on paper it looks promising.
But at ~$200 ea. I'm doing more research first.

Can't really blame chromecast, since what I wanted to do isn't even on its capability list.
Its just what people on the net got it to do.

        • @crazym0nkey:
          Roku 3 is pretty awesome.

        • Hmm I've never had an issue with transcoding - I do have the latest ASUS AC router though and also does your PC grunt matter?

        • @crazym0nkey: Or ~$100 for a Samsung Bluray player with Smart features (including a Plex app) and an ethernet port so you can ignore the wireless network troubles

        • @Abaddon: Only problem you might have is that bluray player features that crappy security feature that blocks some content with watermarked audio. If you were watching something which was less than legal…

But out of interest, the Plex app on Samsung TV's ignores those copy protection measures

        • -1

Sounds like a poor replacement for a raspberrypi honestly.

        • @Abaddon:
Can't use ethernet, otherwise my ps3 with server on PC would be fine (it can't handle high res stuff, guessing its because of wireless G.

        • @crazym0nkey: The Bluray player also supports wireless, I just use Ethernet for speed.

        • @crazym0nkey: Dude it's probably your wireless. I run two Chromecasts and a WDTV Live, with Plex (admittedly on dedicated machine). The Chromecasts are just as reliable and trouble free as the WDTV Live. I do use mainly 1080p MKV's though, but MP4's shouldnt be an issue.

      • I wondered a similar thing. I've tried Chromecast for streaming straight from my laptop, wasn't effective in my tests.

However, if you use Plex and want to get your content to a TV in the house that doesn't already have a media player, it's a great solution. For me, this is the kitchen TV. Chromecast is so small that it doesn't add any extra weight to that area, and the shows stream great. It takes a little getting used to, but it saves me a lot of time now.

        • I use it for tv portal (not on play store no more) but can get on their facebook site

also, got foxtel go, and heard u can cast screens from selected devices (nexus, some Samsung etc)so considering getting one of those

casting youtube when bored onto the telly

u can also cast chrome webpages onto the telly from a comp

      • I have the Chromecast plugged into the back of my tv, my old phone as a permanent remote control and I use it regularly (with the help of a $3 a month smart vpn) for Plex, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Crackle, Vudu, Google Movies, Google Music, Youtube and hopefully in the near future ABC iView (I'm not holding my breathe for the other local channels). I'm finding that I have the tv on the Chromecast more often than the free to air stations or Foxtel now.

        • hey pete, can you tell me more about the 3 dollar subscription vpn please, what company? is netflix a paid service?

        • +2

@striker5950: I'd assume he is talking about Getflix. It isn't exactly a VPN but it allows you to access content such as Netflix, Hulu and so on.

Netflix is a paid service that costs around $10 a month for a HD package.

        • @padfoot07: cool, so we are restricted access to something that we are happy to pay for in normal circumstances lol, it they bring netflix here with same pricing foxtel will need to pack up their things and go elsewhere

        • @striker5950: I doubt Netflix will be any good even if it does come to Australia officially.

On Getflix you can change your settings to access Netflix from many different countries including the US, UK and so on. When you compare the US and UK versions for example you immediately notice the difference in content.

Personally I always use the US Netflix, while also accessing the BBC iPlayer for UK content, and various other American websites such as ABC to watch TV shows for free a week after they air.

    • I wanna find it out too, thus I am going to order one

    • -3

      Because sheep.

    • +2

The Chromecast supports Netflix and Hulu. Certain editions of the chromecast firmware can be rooted to allow users to change the DNS which makes it a bit easier.

      Otherwise there's PLEX and iview!

      • +1

use a router with ddwrt/tomato/merlin etc firmware. use iptables to redirect dns to your getflix/unodns etc dns server

        • +1

You don't even need that. If you define a static route that causes traffic to Google's DNS servers to fail then the CC falls back to using whatever you have assigned via DHCP. Most domestic routers out there can do this although admittedly this prevent Google DNS being used anywhere on your network, instead of just rerouting traffic from the CC if you use iptables.

    • +3

PLEX all the way… plus the tidal wave of local streaming services coming our way in the not too distant future.

    • +3

You can play Netflix and Hulu through a service such as Getflix or UnblockUs.

      I followed the guide here:
      http://ausdroid.net/howto/chromecast-coming-heres-can-get-ne…

There are other amazing apps with Chromecast support such as Popcorn Time (Streams torrents), Showbox (Streams movies + shows for free - Android only) and Crackle (Seinfeld!!).

Chromecast is the bomb, it has made my whole media center at home so much better. For $40, you'd be crazy not to get one.

      • Just be mindful that if you have Optus or Telstra cable, they lock down the firmware of their modem routers so you cannot change the DNS settings for Getflix or Unblock-US. Can always get a second router and create a bridge to your modem to get it working but a lot of hassle.

        • Yea exactly what I had to do. Bridged my Optus cable modem and then bought a Netgear wireless router which allowed me to add custom DNS' and drop the Google ones.

      • Do you use all of these with an Android phone? At the moment I only have iPhones and iPads in the house and the Chromecast isn't as smooth as I thought it would be.

    • +1

I use Chromecast to stream my PLEX media library to the TV. Pretty convenient because I can use my phone as a remote control.

    • Not too hard to get Unblock-US or GetFlix up and running on your router and installing Netflix on an Android device is trivial. Get one of these and you can watch shows on your TV directly from Netflix/Hulu without needing a PC.

  • kool thanks..

  • ( *Or are you just sick and tired of Dick ) :) that's what she said

On another note dick smith north Sydney had these for $40 pick up in store

    • Was this some time ago, or are they currently still available at that price? Thanks.

  • +2

For the sake of only $9 difference to AUS stock do people really want this with a US plug (instead of Aus plug)?

    • wait what? lool

    • +1

you have a better chance of claiming the 2 months free hulu plus with a US model if that makes sense

    • +15

For the sake of only $9

You do realise this is OzB, right? $9 here is like a fistful of gold :)

    • +2

Wherever there is HDMI there is normally USB anyway.

    • +2

power it using the usb port on your tv

      • Yes, but anybody could always do with an extra USB charger. Or is it not a typical USB charger?

    • +2

Agree with you all. but again guys.. for $9… your prepared to wait for 1 - 2 weeks on delivery? when you could go into a DSE or even somewhere else like JB to put it up there then.. not to mention warranty etc

As for the USB plug.. not all TV models have one.. eg the TV in my lounge room does but it won't power it for some reason but then other TV in the bedroom works it fine.

    • I agree as main issue is that yes you can power it via USB BUT if you do it will not turn your tv on automatically.

i.e. Everything is off - I go to my tablet, pick a show via plex, pick a device I want to stream it to (e.g. master bedroom tv) then that tv will turn on automatically and start playing the show. This only works if chromecast is connected via powerpoint.

    • but you can redeem 2 months Hulu plus instead of 1 month of Presto

There is so much fun with Hulu, Presto content is too less..

  • Yep use usb power on tv

  • bbc iplayer is also an excellent chromecast enabled app (requires dns workaround though)

  • Has anybody tried getting a discount from JB Hifi on the chromecast? Will they take a few bucks off? If so, then the difference between Amazon and Australia may be only $5 or so. I'm guessing that isn't worth it for most people.

  • Can I use Google music to play music the cast to my TV using chromecast, as my TV is connected to Sonos, so eventually the music will be played from Sonos?

I also wonder if I should wait for the Nexus Player, as it is more powerful then the chromecast.

    • +1

Yeah you can. The nexus player should be way better if you are prepared to pay the price.

    • I think I read somewhere that the Nexus player is pretty much meant as proof of concept to get the tech out there and Google are hoping it is picked up by third-parties and/or integrated into TV as the new 'default' smart TV tech. That isn't to say its not worth getting though if you want the experience now.

      • +1

I'd rather they keep the Nexus player separated from the TV, so that it costs much less when we can upgrade the 2 separately. Manufactures should keep TV as simple as just a screen.

  • +2

A new Chromecast is on the way according to Google, but no details on the specs yet.

    http://9to5google.com/2014/10/22/google-confirms-that-a-seco…

    • +1

Fingers crossed for an ethernet connection! Its wireless is brilliant, don't get me wrong, but as the old saying goes… "if it ain't copper it ain't proper" An audio output would be a nice touch too as it would allow the device to be used as a pure audio streamer a'la SONOS (but still not as flexible as a SONOS of course)

    • I thought the Nexus player is the next version of chromcast…

      • From what I've read they will have both devices available probably to give punters options ie. Chromecast for $40-$50 for the basics and Nexus Player at $100+ for the more advanced functions including gaming. Looks as though the Nexus Player is Wifi only anyway :(

    • I hope it supports the AC standard

  • Doesn't Dick Smith do the Chromecast for about $40 from time to time?.

    • Yes they advertise it as such. Try actually getting one though.

  • i just sold my unused (well, used once) chromecast on gumtree for $20. i thought they were regularly at 40 and below locally. should've asked for more.

    • :o Im shocked

  • is there any other apps to mirror your tablet or phone other than plex?

    • certain devices with the new kit kat update can do screen mirroring
      mainly the nexus devices

  • Good deal. Amazon posts relatively quickly as well.

Do note that for maximum performance you DO need to plug in the power source. In this case you can just use a microusb to power adapter that are so common these days and recycle the US plug adapter that comes with the unit.

  • Finally picked one up. Cheers, EC!

  • +1

One correction EC it is not the cheapest it has been though. $34 was the cheapest from DS

  • Does anyone know how soon do we get the cancel order confirmation?
Thinking to cancel my order here, and buy it from dicksmith

  • any one want to buy mine send me a PM

  • -2

  • +1

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/166559?page=1

    • argh missed it again :S

  • Mine was only $28 including shipping? Some random $10 promotional code applied itself? Anyone else get this?

  • Can i use Plex to stream youttube videos from my computer to my Samsung Smart Tv & Samsung Blue Ray player without having to use Chromecast/Roku etc?

  • can Chromecast use a 2A charger like my tablet has?
