This is cheap .. might grab one unless SE rep comes up with a better deal ^_^

Does this use the newer CPU?

    • Intel celeron 2820 is the CPU… not too sure what you mean by newer CPU

      • +5

The newer CPU being the 2830, without the known hardware bugs. They kept the same model number so it is difficult the tell the difference online :(

        • The link to the deal shows intel NUC celeron N2820… so I'd assume its the old CPU

        • @ProjectZero:

Yeah I would assume so. I feel it's still too early to see the new ones around.

For those interested this is how to tell the difference:

the "known hardware bugs" were fixed with firmware some time back. I have one and it has been running flawlessly for a few months.

The reason now that everyone wants the 2830 is because it does some sort of video rendering that the 2820 does not.

Great price, but according to Whirlpool, it may have some issues with High Res media if you plan on using it as an HTPC/Plex server like me.

    • +1

I use mine to play 1080p files streamed from my NAS box/plex server and also to play steam games streamed and have never had an issue with performance.

      • I use mine to play 1080p files…

Goals have shifted, "High Res" is now 4K (encoded using H.265/NGVC).

        • According to some folks on whirlpool, this may have issues with higher bitrate 1080 files as well.

When i said High Res i actually meant 1080p although not all 1080p…

  • Seems pretty cheap, all you need is monitor, keyboard and mouse!

      and a cat?

      • You should change your name… oh wait.

Poor blokes wondering why everyone down votes him

        • +6

          @cdaddy:

I've said many time that I don't care people's down votes since my bank balance never drops because of that, so neggers please neg my comments, any time welcomed :)

How about a deal on the i3 or i5 NUC?

    • +2

I second that, would jump at the i3 or i5 in a heartbeat if it is at a competitive price as this.

Cheap but pretty low end CPU. There might be issues using this as a HTPC/Media server but it should be OK as a basic "office" PC

  • +1

Runs fine for me as a HTPC. I honestly don't think its performance is too bad. Chuck a SSD in there and it should be more than acceptable as an office PC or a HTPC.

I have one of these, and have been using it for quite a while. With an SSD and 4GB of RAM on Windows 8.1, I'd call it 'usable' for a bit of light surfing and MS office. As a plex client, connected to a TV via HDMI it performed ok. The IR remote works well with the cheapie HP media remotes from ebay. Frequent driver and BIOS updates available. Never had a problem.

  • I have the exact same set up as Hammo and I've never had a problem with mine either over the last 6 months.

  • Does it comes with wireless module pre-installed? I checked CPLOnline website, but cannot find any detail about it.

    • Yes, it does.

      • Thanks, but looks like I'm too late, add to cart button is gone, no stock left?

  • Nice price, but any deals for a barebones NUC? or just with ram?
    Don't care for Winblows.

  • Yep, out of stock for me too.

    • +1

Just checked, there still seems to be some stock left… add to cart button is back.

  • I have set up two of these. One for my mum, with an SSD instead of hdd, and windows 8.1. Perfect for her usage (web and email). Crazy fast for what it's doing and the price, and nice and tidy and out of the way on the desk.

the other one I have at home, also with SSD instead of HDD, running OpenElec (stripped down linux that is pretty much only xbmc) as a HTPC. Has had no issues with 1080p mkv h.264 files streaming off my N54L media server (although I pass through digital audio to my amp).

  • $93.76 or something for shipping? Ouch… Thought these things were just small boxes?

  • +1

How much with out the windows?

  • Hey guys, I want a basic machine I can use for playing media but most importantly playing simple platformer metal slug like steam games. Would this do the job?

  • -3

Why would you get this when for the same price (with free shipping) a couple days back you could get a lenovo laptop with the same cpu, ram and bigger hd. It also had a dvd drive. A laptop is far more versatile than this thing.

  • Yea wish it were the i3, would've bought the crap out of it.

  • Is there any deals going on the i5 model???? D54250WYKH

  • does this have wifi?
