Bought this $40 phone with Woolies last month and $15 later with a Bagman-unlock, it was possibly my best ever value phone purchase since my days of the Nokia 5110 (yes I've been using mobile phones since those days!). The phone has been so good, I actually bought another online last week (Christmas gift for a friend), sadly for about $110 delivered, because I didn't think Woolies would do another of these half price (plus they'd run out of stock even at $80).

Windows 8.1 does have a limited app range, but the main ones are there - WhatsAp, FB and Insta. I use this phone for work ie. mainly phone, texts and of course web surfing. I have an iphone 4s for all my other app related stuff. WhatsAp is especially fantastic, because prior to this the iphone advantage was the group SMS flexibility via imessage, but increasingly people are having trouble verifying their imessage to work properly on their iphone (I know of two people), so WhatsAp has completely done away with platform incompatibility.

The 530's resolution is defo not crash hot (I believe it's only like 240 ppi compared to even the old iphone 4s's 328 ppi or something), but really it hasn't been that bad - my Gmail comes over fine, and web pages are OK if you don't have to spend too long on it (I have a 7" tablet for that). The point is you get a smartphone that is quite fast operationally (Windows Phone I believe is a very effective low resource intensive OS), at a price that you'd pay for accessories for your S6's and I6's ….

So yeah horses for courses … but in the case of this Nokia 530, it's a backyard pony priced bolter for a mid-field finish at the Melbourne Cup! Bargain if you ask me! I'm getting a few more for gifts …

      Great appraisal.

    • I wish ANZ would release a windows phone app. :-)

  • Another thing … the Here+ Maps GPS on the Nokia's are brilliant … very intuitive, and best of all, you get to download the maps onto the phone. So you could practically be travelling in ANY country around the world and not need mobile data access in that country (you miss out on traffic reports, but not always important). Yes I believe the Here+ maps are being rolled out onto some Androids too, but hey for $40 why wait?

    • +1

They want $50 for Here+ maps on my HTC8X. Go figure!
It's just annoying that even though I "own" it on my 530, I cannot get it on my HTC8X without paying a crapload of money just to have decent voice navigation. 530 is a backup phone of sorts.

      • Did you download the here beta then try to get maps. Its free for me.

        • Mate I will try this now. Thanks for the tip. My GPS navigator went on the blink so I'm thinking of buying a universal mount and using one of my phones as a replacement GPS unit(on the condition that it has fully functional voice navigation).

        • The one I was referring to was Here+Drive. You still need to buy a standalone companion app to get turn by turn voice directions with Here Maps. It is only useful for mapping and routing.

        • @wolfenator87:

Did you find it her is the link.

  • Don't woolies only sell Optus and Vodafone stuff, or did that change? I thought Coles was the one selling Telstra phones and what not.

So this one is definitely telstra branded then

  • Is this deal available across Australia or only in select areas. As when I do a search on the Woolworth web site for my area this catalog is not listed.

  • As above - I'd hate to get to Wednesday then trawl across all the Woolies in North Sydney and find nothing :(

  • Same here, couldn't find it in Catalogue. Put in different postcodes across the country - East to West, none came up with Nokia.

  • The catalogue should be online in an hr

  • Do you think this SD card deal is good to go with the Lumia 530?

  • Just need an advice, I'm thinking of buying the Nokia to use as a mp3/flac music player to replace my aging 4gb Sony mp3 player.

can anyone comment on sound quality campared to stand alone mp3/iPod music players.

    many thanks

    • I'm sure someone will comment but try maybe listening to a review on youtube, it should give you an idea

      • @TRENT86, thank you for that suggestion.

    • Nominal. Just as good as any I guess. The encoding quality of the files and output hardware has the greatest bearing on sound quality.

    • It is probably similar to the 520 if not better…

      Lumia 520 audio quality

  • Managed to load up Woolies on-line and searched for Nokia. Came up with message available from 25th at $39. Did a few other things, came back, never shown up again! Anyone else has any luck seeing the offer lately?

    • It's in the online catalogue for nsw. Not sure about other states

    • The paper catalogue showed up in my letter box yesterday, showing this deal, so it is valid in SA, at least

  • Checked in store neutral bay and none in stock today (at full price).
Wonder if they'll get a delivery when it goes on sale or if I should just hunt elsewhere….

  • So are the phones in the regular electronics section, on the shelves like everything else? Can't recall ever seeing phones at the supermarket!

I picked up another Lumia 530 this morning (bought one last time they were half price).
This one is made in Vietnam (other one was China) and it didn't come with a 4GB SDcard.

Unfortunately I still have the same problem with saving Apps on the SDCard. Once I reboot none of the APPS (on the SDcard) will run. Apps stored on the internal storage are fine. Other data on the SDcard remain okay such as music, maps, photos etc just APPS get corrupted after you reboot. You can't even remove and install them back to the SDCARD as it just does not work.

I've tried 3 different SD cards (8GB class 10, 4GB class 6 and 1GB class 4) all didn't make any difference. I've even reformatted on my PC.

I have to come to the conclusion this is a WP OS bug. As there are other users on different forums complaining about this same issue. I hope Microsoft release a firmware update that fixes it.

What I can't understand is why more users haven't noticed this serious bug (or perhaps they do but arn't concerned about it). The problem with the 530 as it has such low internal storage the save to SDcard would have been a great feature freeing up as much as 800mb+ from internal storage whilst being able to install more applications!

It's still a great deal though especially for the GPS/Mapping software!

    • Sad. Got another viet one. Still feel ripped off although I know it's worth like $2.50

    • Saving apps to the internal memory and then moving them manually to the SD card also poses the same problem. I've also reformatted and used different cards. Everything else runs fine off the card except the apps.

It's not an issue for me, but for someone else who downloads large games and multiple apps, it just might be.

      • Try debranding the phone, then updating the software using Preview For Developers.

I don't have any issues with apps on the SD on my country variant firmware 530s.

        • Did you have sd card issue before you did software update?
I have done the debranding but not the other.

        • @pufffdragon:

Don't know. Didn't get that far setting it up. Installing Preview for Developers was part of my setup routine (I owned a 520 previously, did the same thing on that).

But all I know is that on the latest software, no problems with running games (e.g., Asphalt 8, Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja) and other large apps.

It's not that hard to register as a developer (look up App Studio).

        • @happychappy1:
I've done both the de-branding and using Preview For Developers and updated to the latest updates for WP8.1 Update 1 and the problem is still there.

        • @pufffdragon:
Does it make a difference if you have an active SIM in the phone?
I don't but I really doubt it. Perhaps it's a problem with the firmware for Australia?

        • @happychappy1: Just checked and I did go through all the steps. And confirmed, I still have the issue.

        • @backer: An active sim didn't make any change but it was worth a try.

Another issue now is I can't seem to get any apps to install on the sd card. It just say's pending everytime. But install to internal memory and its fine.

I've just tried 4 different cards and rebooted each time. Still can't install. Ha ha,my problems have escalated

        • @pufffdragon: If it helps, I'm using a 32GB Sandisk Ultra (30MB/s, Class 10), which I bought about 18 months ago.

No problems with this card. Perhaps, it's the speed of the card that is the issue (like, it can't read it fast enough).

Smaller capacity cards are generally slower, even if they do say Class 10 or "up to 30MB/s" (especially in relation to write speeds).

Go with the best card you can find (e.g., 32GB+, Sandisk Extreme or Samsung Pro). If those have issues, then just redownload the original firmware, flash it, then take it back to the store for a refund.

NAND flash tends to wear out, so older cards with less capacity would be more susceptible to this.

Another thing you might want to try is a factory reset, then start fresh (don't restore).

        • @happychappy1: Thanks mate. Mines definitely not a class ten. Got a couple of class two and a four. Will try to get one next week. Will let you know how it goes. Cheers

        • @pufffdragon:
yes this is what happens to mine. The only way it works again to to do a factory reset with the SDcard installed.
Then it will work again (until you reboot the phone). Then it won't allow any apps to move or download to SD card and the apps that were installed before just don't load anymore.

        • hapychappy
Are you using RM-1018 version of the phone with either Telstra or non branding firmware?

        • @backer:no brand, I.e. country variant.

          I flashed the firmware myself.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/2339216

Note, I have tried both made in Vietnam and made in China and both are fine.

Didn't do much on the original Telstra firmware.

I regularly power off to change SIM cards and it's been fine, both with and without a SIM.

        • @backer: So if we are all flashing using the same product code, then this must be a hardware issue.

        • @pufffdragon: Im using Sandisk 4GB Class 4 and no issue, I didn't see much ppl in Ozbargain complaining this issue, so probably veryy few of phones got this problem.

Just return it to Woolworths and Get another one

        • @ccwwayne: It's been a month since I've had it. Doubt woolies will take it back. Probably have to send to nokia

        • @pufffdragon:
The problem is I have two phones made in different countries with the same problem. I have concerns that if I returned warranty the replacement would be the same.

What I've discovered if I unmount the sdcard and hold the power button down long enough so the phone resets all is fine. The only time it corrupts is when I slide down to power off.

I wonder if users here who recently bought this phone installed an sdcard then installed an app then shutdown phone only to reboot and check the apps that were on the sdcard?

Perhaps it's a bug with a driver. On some phones perhaps there are minor hardware differences.

I understand there's are at least two users who don't have this problem and two that do. Reading posts from around the world there are others users who also have it.

Are there any other users with this fault ?

        • @backer:

Got in touch with Nokia and they sent me a link to a Nokia software recovery tool to determine if it's a software or hardware issue.

All it did was reflash the phone to it's original state, with Telstra branding. The apps are still pending when loading them onto the SD Card, so no change. Waiting to hear what they will say next.

I don't know if removing the branding and changing the software voids the warranty on this phone, but if you did change it like me and need to send your phone back, here's the link to the tool that will revert your phone back to it's original state.

          http://download.fds-ncom.nokia.com/supportFiles/phones/files…

        • @pufffdragon:
Thanks the information I forgot to mention I had already tried the recovery tool and it also made no difference.

Could I be unlucky with two bad phones or the problem bigger it's just some users haven't discovered it yet?

    • No Issue For Me… Got 40 apps in SD and 10 apps in mains storage… All Working Fine

      • Have you "slide down to power off" then rebooted?

        • Yep… No issues after turn off and on

        • @ccwwayne:
Are the apps actually running off sdcard after reboot?
Also when you reboot are you sliding the screen down so it says goodbye or just holding power button till it goes off?

        • @backer: reboot by sliding the screen down so it says goodbye

all the apps running perfectly off sdcard after reboot

        • It does seem to be a random issue with these phones.
I wonder if this is Happening on both the Chinese and Vietnam made versions. It sounds silly but what the hey, I'll throw it out there. Mine is the Vietnamese version and I have the SD card issue.

        • @pufffdragon:
I have both China and Vietnam and it happens on both

        • @ccwwayne:
What brand/size/speed sdcard are you using?

        • @pufffdragon:
I've tried a Class 10 (Ultra1) 8GB card and it made no difference. Also a 4GB class 6 and a 1GB class 4 no difference still fails after reboot. It looks like a DRM problem as the Phone/card has to lock down the APPS to your card/phone. Something is corrupting/missing after the phone is rebooted.

But I noticed if you shutdown the phone without going through the slide to shutdown screen, it might still work. So it might be getting corrupted during the actual phone's normal shutdown procedure.

        • @backer: Sandisk 4GB Class 4

For those interested the 530 comes with a black cover and an orange one as well.

    • If they have the white version, which comes in a green box, you'll get a green back included.

  • Thanks, got 2 Lumia 530's from WW today, both don't come with SD card though.
    Now for unlocking…

  • Bought 2 Vietcong phones at Parraghetto today. Now for unlocking…

  • Thanks bagman……………..now unlocked.
Good stuff….prompt service…good to go with.

    • Hi waggy1

      what is bagman's email address?

I don't seem to get a response from him.

  • As previously said it does not work with the Aldi Mobile sim, also Lycamobile does not work. Is it working on Boost, or only Telstra directly?

  • emailed bag_man this morning. No response, may be too many customers?

    • +1

If you pay him he responds quicker ;)

  • Thanks OP, Just got the last one from my local Woolworths as a backup phone to my Sony Xperia Z Ultra plus a Telstra Cruise for my grandmother for Christmas.

  • -1

A coordinated action would be better, so we come up with a list and then email him in one go. After that each will send payment to Bagman via PayPal. If each of a hundred people email him then very likely he's too busy sorting out email, putting updates and answer inquiries.

  • QUESTIONS

    1. Just bought one and there's no usb cable in mine?? Am I the only one got missing usb cable??

    2. Anyone know if the Skype Subscriptions can stack?? So if I buy 2 phones and redeem both codes, do I get 6 months??…. 3 phones and redeem 3 codes, do I get 9 months??

    • There's no USB cable, just a charger. Now I have to go and buy one as I've never own this type of USB before. I still haven't used the phone much because of this and looking for an SD card.

      1. There is no cable included.

      2. No, if you do that, you'll only get 3 months. Best bet would be to use one code then activate another code at the latest date it is valid (31 Jan). They apply simultaneously.

      • So, can you use any old USB/Micro USB cable say, from another smart phones, to charge it from a computer or car USB outlet?

        • +1

Generally, yes, if it charges similar devices.

  • Picked one up yesterday. I have found the performance is good. The screen quality is poor and reflective. The black colours are washed out. The phone is heavier and thicker then in is normal for its screen size. For the price its fine as a mps or Audible book player.

  • I bought a second one for my partner, but she does not like it. So I'm happy to pass on to a fellow Ozbargainer for cost price. I'm in Melbourne.

  • "This one is made in Vietnam (other one was China) and it didn't come with a 4GB SDcard"

Just bought 2 from different shops, will be returning one. So don't want to open them yet….any way of telling which might have the sd included?(ie China made?)Nothing on the outside box.

BTW, Wollies Ashgrove and Brookside has stock.

Aggh picked wrong. No $2.50 sd card; devastated.

      OK I'm over it now.

  • Hi
I'm new here. How can I contact Bagman to get 530 unlocked

  • Thanks Leekatdel

  • No worries, just got my code half an hour ago. Two days delivery as promised. Good price compared to other websites. Thanks Bagman.

  • Put in $15 to [email protected] and included the IMEI and my email address early yesterday morning. Bagman replied later in the morning and got me my codes just a while ago today. Great turn around time, even 2-3 working days is good for the money. All worked without a glitch, great work Bagman! One more Christmas present in the bag!

  • Hi Forest Rivers, How did you pay Bag_man for his service? Bank account or ……

    • Ah yes, can't believe I forgot that bit! Paid via PayPal to his email address so no hesitations paying with all the recommendations on here and the reassurance of PayPal.

Got my codes for 3 units of Lumia 530 after 2 working days….All working, good service….Thanks again [email protected]

    Reliable as always!

  • Thanks for unlocking my phones bag_man. You're a bloody legend :)

  • +1 for [email protected] I am now happily using my Optus (ex. WW Mobile) sim.

This is the first Windows Phone I've used and can I say WOW. So fast and smooth and this coming from a Samsung Galaxy s3 (died last night, RIP).

The only thing that lets this phone down is the screen. It is the worst I've seen on a smartphone. It is usable and I do use my tablet to watch videos/ surf the web mostly. My phone is mostly used for email, messenger, music and light browsing, so it will do. The navigation app looks good too.

I suspect that over the next few weeks I might miss a couple apps, but we'll see.

For $52.53 (after 5% cashback and $15 unlock fee) I am very pleased.

    • Oh and 10 minutes later… I found an app can't get and I miss - Citibank!

Also, on the screen it is worth while noting the touch is perfect - typing is easy and responsive. It is just it doesn't look nice. Hope that makes sense.

    • Enable high contrast to make the screen easier to read and it will look like the font is popping out at you.
Perfect timing on the death of your SG3 - my deepest condolences.
      Welcome to WP8.

      • Thanks for the tip

  • So I got one of these thursday night, and Bagman unlocked it for me, big +1 to him!

I'm actually very, very impressed with WP 8.1. Super fast movement, touch response is amazing, and I LOVE the setup of the gui. As someone whom has been an avid Android user for 6 years now, I think I may have moved on.

  • Another happy customer of the bag_man. Thanks for the prompt service!
