  • I own the 65in version and this is an excellent tv with great sounding speakers. View 4k Netflix on this TV if your broadband is fast enough.

Local dimming LED - better black and contrast than the cheaper lower 55X8500B model. See first review below comparing its black level to Panasonic ZT Plasma.

Comes with 5 free 4k movies via redemption from Sony. These are real 4k version not the remastered version.

If you are good with negotiating, get it from Good Guys (currently $2989), you can get 10 bonus free blurays (purchase by 8 Dec) in addition to the 5 free 4k movies.

    • Spent $4000 on August and no 4K HDD

      • Ya.

From past experience, the best time to buy Sony TV is during November (Sony promotion) - December (Christmas sales) period.

And if you can wait, the price will be even lower in April when new models are announced.

        • I cannot wait any longer at that time. It is a 65X9000B.

Owners shou Get the subwoofer it is good

        • @kawara888:

I see. $4000 for 65X9000B which is good price in August

The above deal is for 55X9000B.

I already have a SVS subwoofer. I don't think my wife will allow me to have 2 subwoofers in the living room. Though the Sony subwoofer is quite sexy.

        • @trump3: a bit if sweet talk and you can get over the line perhaps?

        • @skinny:

Haha. Even if I can sweet talk her, I don't think the white colour Sony subwoofer will match the rest of my AV components.

I will wait till the black one is available and I will sweet talk her then.

        • @trump3: try this one at Amazon.co.uk about A$300 delivered (I also checked Selby last week, they are selling sub210 from shop for $340)

        • @skinny:

That is still the white version though. I am actually looking for the black version.

If you are interested to buy this white subwoofer, perhaps you can wait for Sony Australia to sell it at 50% discount again.

    • I'm pretty certain the Good Guys free blurays deal is done now (it was limited to the first 5000 customers sadly…)

    • I think that is the 65X85000B model.

  • EXTRA 5% Off For Instant Deals Members

5% off voucher will be sent to your email & can be used in store on any deals above Or in store stock, Even 20% off blu-rays and Dvd's so 25% off them

    • So $2418 when in comparison the 55X8500 was $1495 the other day from TGG.

      • If budget is not a problem, 55X9000B is a better option (ie picture and audio). Or even go for the 65in version.

At least you can save $ from needing to buy a soundbar.

        • Definitely better, not disagreeing with you there, but $1k better? Individuals would have to do a cost benefit analysis on that one. I can get vouchers through my salary packaging company at 6% off which would bring it into $2273 which is making it a little more inviting.

        • @bxpressiv:

Ya. It is more a personal thing.

For me, I prefer to get the best possible TV which I can afford, rather than the best possible amplifier or speakers. I am more a visual person. So $1000 to be is not a big issue.

Also, since I already own the 65in version, I believe the picture and sound of X9000B is worth that extra $1000 for the 55in models.

Some people will buy the 8500B because it is cheaper and they don't really mind not having the best possible quality (like my wife or parents).

Having said that, $2600 can also buy the 65inX8500B model. That is a bit more tricky decision because the extra 10in is very tempting and could even be better than having better picture and sound.

        • Yeah, I start with what I want then work my way back to what is realistic. :)

If you had to pick between the two though, and space wasn't a consideration, which would you go:
          55X9000B vs 65X8500

        • @bxpressiv:

          That is abit tricky.

I actually have both the 55X9000A (2013 model) and 65X9000B. I would say I love the 65in screen because it is bigger.

So if you don't plan to buy a new soundbar and already have a 5.1 system and don't want to spend more than $3000, I would go for 65X8500B.

        • I was looking at the 70W850B so I think the X8500 could be a good up-sell.

        • @bxpressiv:

Between 70W850B and 65X8500B, I will go for the 4k model without question.

IMO, movies just look better on the 4k TV models.

        • Now I need to work out how to get a deposit on one as I'm actually overseas right now…

  • Even though it's only an impossibly minor thing, it's a bummer this doesn't do full chroma at 4k, it's stuck at 4:2:0. Still my favourite of the 4k TVs though, those speakers are tremendous.

The newest Panasonics have the bandwidth for full 4:4:4 but aren't compatible with Netflix 4k, and in some ways better quality picture (and worse in others). Bloody nuisance!

Panels are all in a funk at the moment. I want a 1440/1600p, IPS g-sync 120hz pc monitor and a 4k TV that doesn't comprimise, dammit!

    • +1

I don't even want to know what one of those would cost… hahahaha

I'd be happy with a 4K 65" 200Hz TV and a 27" 1440p 144hz G-sync monitor. They both exist already but the funds do not.

      • +1

If only my funds matched my ambition!

    • +1

None compare to CRT in picture quality. At the end of the day, it's still a crappy LCD, no matter what the resolution.

    • Even though no one is reading this anymore, just wanted to add that Panasonic fixed their Netflix problem, and their range of 4k have had a firmware update to now support 4k Netflix. Hurray!

      • Acknowledged. :)

  • +1

Still an edge-lit model though. I think they only released the full-array model in the US (X9500?). I could never recommend buying a TV this expensive that still used edge-lit LED lighting and all the picture uniformity issues this throws up.

My hope is that the 2015 models stop cheaping out on the lighting, (or offer up a couple of OLEDs).

  • Geez… this monstrosity is 20kg heavier and 25cm wider than my Samsung UA55H6400AW 55" Full HD Smart 3D LED-LCD TV.
I know I'm comparing apples and oranges, but TVs are supposed to be getting lighter and (relatively) smaller.

I think I'll stick to my setup of separate TV and AV Receiver/Speakers for the foreseeable future.

    • +2

      One word: Speakers.

  • This seems to have gone back to $2996. Deal is over?
