Double Points on Your Commonwealth Bank Mastercard

1220

Earn double points on your CBA MasterCard if you lock your card using Netbank before Feb 1, 2015.

Note: this allows you to basically earn double Qantas FF points if your MasterCard is in the direct earn program - from a pathetic 0.5 QFF points per dollar spent to a much better 1 point per dollar spend. You'll get 1.25 QFF points per dollar spent if you have a Diamond card.

Simple steps:
1. Logon to Netbank and limit some part of the card - for example limit international transactions.
2. Earn double points
3. Wait a day (just to be safe) and remove the limit if desired. You will still receive double points for the entire promotional period.

Things to know before you Can:
Excludes transactions flagged as recurring (e.g. direct debits) and transactions not sent to us for authorisation. Other Terms & Conditions apply.

To be eligible for double points on MasterCard spend from 30 November 2014 to 1 February 2015 you must have temporarily locked your credit card, blocked international payments or ATM cash advances or limited the spend amount on any CommBank Awards MasterCard at least once before 1 February 2015. The lock, block or limit functionality does not need to be retained until the end of the promotion. American Express and Visa spend are not eligible. Additional points earned during this promotion do not count towards points capping. No cap or limits on how many additional points customers can earn during this period. Points may not be awarded if a transaction is refunded. Additional points will be credited in either your March or April 2015 Statement. Bonus partners are excluded from this double points promotion.

    I still don't understand it :-(

There is a FAQ containing 15 questions and answers. After you read them all, it eventually makes sense.

    • +4

      Log into netbank,
go to the mastercard options and select 'manage my account'
select 'Change my card settings to lock or limit transactions'
decide which options you wish to lock then click save.

    • +4

      cash was so much simpler…

  • Correct me if in wrong so you need to just change one of the setting out of the ones mentioned above for a day and you will earn double points from 30/11-1/2??

  • So how long does the lock, block or limit functionality need to be retained for? Can it be undone immediately?

  • How can I use the card once I lock/block it? very confusing….

    • +3

You can block either or all of
      1. International in store use. (useful if you aren't physically using the card overseas)
      2. International online transactions (not too great if you buy a lot of international stuff online)
      3. ATM cash advances (useful if you never use your credit card to withdraw cash)

      or you can:
      4. Limit amount per transaction. (useful to limit the amount that the card can be used for in one go)

For example, i've locked 1, 3 and limited to maximum of $800 and it doesn't affect the way I use my credit card at all. By locking/limiting things I don't need, it means that if my card were stolen, then impact of what a thief would get away with could be reduced.

You can easily go in and readjust the changes if you want. (eg, if you locked international instore and decided you were going overseas) It really shouldn't be that difficult a concept to grasp for frequent credit card users..

    • You are not "locking" the card completely. The "Lock Block and Limit" function for CBA credit cards applies to in-store international payments, online international payments and ATM cash advances, so you can lock any or all of those three options. You can also put a limit per transaction on each card, but "locking" it doesn't affect normal day-to-day use (unless you have put a transaction limit on the card and try to buy something over that limit!).

ETA: Aneurism beat me to it :)

      • Here's the fine print:

To be eligible for double points on MasterCard spend from 30 November 2014 to 1 February 2015 you must have:
        - temporarily locked your credit card,
        - blocked international payments or ATM cash advances, or
        - limited the spend amount on any CommBank Awards MasterCard

at least once before 1 February 2015. The lock, block or limit functionality does not need to be retained until the end of the promotion.

Does this mean if I lock/limit/block the card and undo them immediately I'd get the double points?

  • why we were not told by the bank of this offer?

    • I only just received the email about 15 minutes ago.

    • I was, I got an email in the last 30 minutes on this..

why we were not told by the bank of this offer?

      Because only OzBargain can.

  • +1

Reminder BPAY payments don't get points

  • +3

Looks like one of the locks is "international, in store".

Unless people are overseas then there is no reason for this to be on, so you can use this lock and not be inconvenienced.

    Looking at the levels:
    - Awards card is most cost effective to use MC rather than AMEX.
    - Gold card - MC + AMEX will get same points.
    - Plat + Diamond - more cost effective to use AMEX where possible.

    • Yep just realized that too. But still, worth doing it just in case there are shops / cafes / restaurants that don't accept amex.

      • As I'm using Gold - that's exactly what I'll do.

As per current usage - keep using Amex mostly, then switch to gold when not available or surcharge.

  • -2

My Plat. CBA Amex already gets 2.5 times the points so there isn't much point in me bothering with this but it is good for those who don't have a platinum MC/AMEX dual card account.

    • +6

Except not all places accept Amex so in those circumstances, you can whip out the MC and still get close to what you'd get with the Amex! =)

  • +1

What if I had already turned on some lock features long time ago? Do I still earn the points?

    • I did so. I think the app prompted after an update.
But I got an email saying that I will get double points because I used the feature.

  • If I block ATM cash advances can I still use the card to withdraw cash from my savings account?

    • Yes you can still withdraw from the Savings account. It's how I have mine setup.

      • thanks mate, i just turned off ATM cash advances for both my MC and AMEX cards.

  • +1

I actually think this is a good idea to build awareness - locking some of these txns is quite useful! (not a rep)

  • I've got the paypass feature set up on my Android. I don't actually carry the card around. I rarely use it because of the shitty points earn, but this will make it attractive!

    • I assume you're using a Samsung S4? Still no support for the S5 :(

      • S4, yes!

  • "To be eligible for double points on MasterCard spend from 30 November 2014 to 1 February 2015"

I'm assuming the double points don't accrue from back on 30 November 2014, and that it only commences once you've down the lock thing.

Shame because I just a had big transaction yesterday that I had to use my mastercard on instead of the amex.

  • Great, thanks, just in time for Christmas spending….

  • damn, why not VISA?

    • +1

Probably because it's an old product you are grandfathered into and they would rather you switch to a Mastercard.

  • so this only works for credit cards or debit cards too?

    • +1

CBA debit cards do not get reward points. So, no.

  • So i just locked instore int transactions and cash advances… Should i be seeing some sort of prompt that i will now start earning double points?

  • Hey OP,

It doesn't look like this promotion applies to QFF points.

From the FAQ at the bottom of your link:

I am registered for Qantas Frequent Flyers program, how are the points calculated?

The Qantas Frequent Flyers programs direct earn conversion rates will remain the same.

    • Awards Points to FF points conversion is the same, yes. But you will earn twice as many awards points.

      • -1

Not for Qantas because of direct earn.

  • Not for Cba Amex I am getting double points from it anyway.

  • Again what if you already have these turned on.

Do we need to turn them off and on again?

    • I turned on one of the features after an app update, not sure when. But I got an email,

Sub :You're earning double points on your CommBank Awards MasterCard

Message:Thank you for using lock, block and limit to add extra security to your CommBank Awards MasterCard credit card.

When you locked your Awards MasterCard you also unlocked double Awards points on your MasterCard spend# between 30 November 2014 and 1 February 2015. It's our way of saying thanks and we hope you enjoy the peace of mind that comes with the extra security your CommBank credit card provides. Look out for your additional points which will be credited by 30 April 2015.

  • How much is the value of this deal?

Double points means nothing to me. I'm not even aware I am earning points.

    • Lol

    • the CommBank Awards MasterCard credit cards earns you points - not the normal student ones. reward points can be used to redeem stuff, gift cards or even cash back - but of course one shouldn't expect to get that much back - 4180 points on your card for $20 aud cashback.

  • Thanks OP…just activated this to coincide with $1,200 car repairs on MasterCard.

  • i've just hit the day when my rewards balance is updated to reflect the past month's amounts and funnily enough whilst I've gained some on the AMEX, I've got 0 balance on the points I've accumulated for MasterCard. Not sure if this is to do with enabling this deal or not but not happy nonetheless. Will be calling the CBA cust service soon but just an FYI to you all to check on your balance history to make sure.

    • Where do you see a breakdown of points accrued on each card?

      • Click on the My Account tab along the top > Transaction History

They break down your point accumulation by month.

        • Thanks I was looking in Netbank rather than the Awards site.

          Mine hasn't clicked over yet.

  • Nice, great for the extra spending over christmas.
