Telstra $30 Prepaid Starter Kits for $10 Online + Free Delivery

1101
xmas

Telstra's given a Xmas/New Year's present bringing the $10 Starter Kit back till 31st December. This time though you have to go to their web site and give your credit card details, you'll have to decide if it's worth it. Also I'm not 100% sure that the type of starter kit is as versatile as the ones on offer 6 or so months ago but I hope they are.

BTW my email notification about this deal included the disclaimer "offer not available to all customers. Offer ends 31 December 2014 or until stock lasts". I did check today 27/12 and the coupon code worked.

OY (Oh Yeah): It's only one per order (they don't want to make it too easy).

    Only one per order.

    • I've done two orders. It just takes time. No saved information, no chrome auto-fill.

  • +1

$9 too dear after the $1 one here.

It's still available until 31st. Got marked expired early for some reason.

      • It's expired because you had to make the $30 qualifying spend by 24th. You have until 31st to claim the $1 starter pack though.

        • Wow, how the heck did people figure that out?

        • Got my mum to try and grab one on the 23rd and when she asked the cashier they said they sold out of the $1 ones ages ago. =( might be marked as expired because of no stock?

        • @Agret:

Woolworths usually raincheck sales items. Go to the service desk and ask.

        • @dazweeja:
No raincheck necessary, as other conditions apply to this deal.

This is not a usual sale item (where a raincheck applies), but a special promotion.

Its a deal associated with your registered EDR card, redeemable until 31/12. Some have reported getting raincheck, but store may not accept it, as condition on deal is must be redeemed by 31st.

    • Still can't understand why people are paying 10 times the price Woolies charge for the same item, and think that's a bargain? Picked up one last night for $1.

      • To be able to buy those SIMs you need to spend >$30 if im not mistaken.

Personally, I dont spend much money at Woolworths, therefore I cannot purchase any of those $1 sims.

        • Both deals are over now. Bought several in last few days without any purchase as I described in that deal.

Almost all of us need to spend some money on groceries. So why not $30 at Woolies, if it's convenient (I was about 6000km from nearest Woolies when the $1 deal started!), to get this same product for $9 less.

Considering the reports of problems getting this $10 deal (only 1 per order, being home to produce ID for order, orders being cancelled), buying a few groceries from Woolies would not be great hardship for most.

I haven't paid this much for a Telstra Starter Pack since 2013 & still have 3 $10 Packs (expiring in April & September).

Between $9 Vodafone 3GB data SIM/ USB modem deals, $10 for $40 BOOST unlimited SIMs (combined 2 deals), and Woolies $1 Telstra Starter Pack deals, and old $10 Telstra deals, I am set for over 2 years with 20 packs, after just activating 2 old Telstra Packs. (Lucky my orders for HN $8 old Telstra Packs never went through!) So was surprised this deal was so popular after those

It's the OzBargainer way to get the best deal & stock up ;-)

  • Also I'm not 100% sure that the type of starter kit is as versatile as the ones on offer 6 or so months ago but I hope they are

What do you mean by this ?
This contains all three sizes in one SIM and you can activate any mobile/broadband plan.

    • It's just that there were all those colours before, green, magenta and orange. This one is slightly different from that earlier series. I only need to be able to transfer the credit, it it allows that I'm happy, and I'm pretty sure it does.

      • +1

It's the same product as before. They have just gone for an integrated packing which includes all three SIM sizes

    • +10

I have found Telstra's support actually very good…

As for joining multiple starter packs, that's clearly not the idea of a STARTER pack, and you had no right to expect telstra to do that for you… they did you a favour by allowing it.

  • +3

Just to confirm, can you use this for google play credit and also $30s of credit for a month? Cheers.

  • So this sim includes $250 call/text credit AND 800MB data?

    • +2

if you activate it on Freedom… yes

      • What about the Data only plan (2GB) ? I don't see it on the sim page

        • +1

I activated one of these kits last week using an iPad an ended up on the Mobile Broadband plan, with 2gb data. It seems to be the only plan I could get, since the ipad plan is no longer available (eg the 3gb one).

Possible to price match at office works?

  • +1

Seems to work for me and I did not get a targeted offer. Good to see I can stock up , eve if it means ordering a few times with one per order.

  • Now I just need a big android handset for all of the apps I have been buying using the Telstra credit :)

  • Do I need to activate it within certain no of days?

    • +1

My guess expiry of the SIM will be 2016.

      • +1

I just got mine and the expiry date is 24 Oct 2016.

Gonna order another since the expiry is so long :)

        Good for road trips/holidays.

  • Looking to buy TomTom but it is more than the $20 limit.
Is there a way to do it?

    • +1

      go buy JohnJohn

      • Isn't Here drive+ on iOS and Android now? That's way better.

        • I didnt like the Here+

    • -1

You cant buy hardware. Only digital media.

      • +3

ofcause i meant the TomTom app whcih is currently on sale for $37 odd.

        • <dreaming> would be nice if you could mix payment types, just like at coles/woolies self-service </dreaming>

        • @spillmill: You can mix payment types at my local Coles. I usually split payments into multiples of under $99 so I can use ING paypass, and the occasional gift card.

        • Oh. My mistake.

        • @sween64: np :)

  • Is this deal expired?

Link comes up as the normal $30 for me.

    • +3

You enter the voucher code at checkout.

  • Understand from earlier posts that Telstra only targeting specific customers by email (and providing voucher code). I wonder how you get on to the Telstra 'mailing list'. FYI I am Telstra home phone/broadband customer but with Optus prepaid mobile. Enquiries with Telstra online chat rep have proved fruitless !!! Any ideas ???

  • +1

There's no stock at Woolies for the one dollar deal. Besides you need to pay $31 including groceries. So if you are not buying groceries this is the better deal besides the other one already expired

    • it's expired anyways.

      • not exactly, see dajweeja's comment above

    • Still stock some stores. Got 1 for $1 without $30 purchase. Some stores are still supplying at $1, according to comment at end of that deal.

  • Expired or not working for me…

"We do not recognise the special offer code you entered. Please try again."

  • Worked for me. Thanks franeK.

  • How many GBs of data for a tablet?

  • just got SMS from Telstra, the order is cancelled.

    • woops !
Did they give any reason ?

      • No reason.
"Your Telstra mobile order has been stopped. Please call us on 1800 096 566 for more information."

        • I have had that before probably a failed ID check.

  • Worked for me too just now. Note you need to be home to show the same ID for 2day metro delivery, if that matters.

  • Worked fine for me !
I am on Telstra pre-paid for my mobile
    Thanks OP

  • How do you port your current number over to a new SIM like this?

    • +1

afaik, you have to be on a different carrier to port your number over,
Just call them over the phone or do a Live Chat and they will activate and port it for you !

      • +1

yep, except you can't be with Boost and do the porting yourself, not sure about other Telstra resellers (I think they are fine - maybe)

    • +1

I've outlined how to port from Telstra to Telstra in the Wiki.

Ported to Vodafone (had a free $2 SIM) & back to Telstra on Christmas eve in just 3 hours, to keep my phone number.

    • +1

I got this in the confirmation email after I bought.

      Activating your Telstra Pre-Paid

You can activate your Telstra Pre-Paid service online at telstra.com/activate. You'll need your existing service number, or the service number on your Telstra Pre-Paid SIM kit. If you're keeping your number from another carrier you'll need your mobile number and your customer account number(if this is a Post-Paid service).

  • From memory iF you need to port over theres an option online when you activate your Sim which asks you to call their support #

  • debit card is ok to pay. thanks OP. ordered two.

  • Hi guys, is this a multi fit sim or micro

    • +1

      @neonlight

All three main sizes Nano/Micro/Full ie: multi punch

  • This does not have any credit :0

I wanted it for my ipad min that's already activated and the prepaid just ran out today. So now that I've spent $10 on it, can I use it in the ipad?

    • @ Anna10

You can't use as a recharge but if you activate this sim you can get 2GB data.

      Read Bruces Wiki
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/telstra_pre-paid_starter_p…

      • Hi Snappy,

So I take it you cannot use a Starter Pack as a Recharge Voucher.

Meaning if you were to take advantage of $1 Starter Pack as per recently Woolies deal or $15 for $30 at 7-11, you cannot use the starter pack to recharge existing prepaid number?

        Is that correct?

        • +1

Can't be used as a normal recharge. Wiki contains ideas of what to use credit on.

eg as outlined as my Budget suggestion in Wiki: I have a Starter Pack set up on Longlife plan (6 month access), then changed to Simplicity (15c/min / 12c SMS). So that gives 200 minutes of calls / 250 SMS on $30 included credit over 6 months. (Also scheme in Wiki for cheap plan & CreditMe2u transfer for higher call use.)

Every 6 months to keep my phone number, I port out to another Telco & back to new Starter Pack. I just ported to Vodafone (had a free $2 SIM) & back to Telstra on Christmas eve, then changed from Longlife to Simplicity all within just 3 hours! You could port number temporarily to Yatango FREE to get 1GB, 600 min calls, 600 SMS (if still available).

That same method can keep your number on all plans like a recharge, but cannot rollover credit etc!

It's all in the Wiki. If it's not there - add to it ;-)

        • @brucefromaustralia: AFAIK yatango free trial has ended

        • +1

          @Food:
Thanks. Have been out of the country. Updated Wiki. Tips for cheap calls

You can still order a FREE sim from Lyca Mobile to temporarily port your number to, without the perks Yatango once offered.

        • That's what I was hoping. I put the $1 on my ipad yesterday for 30 days.

I can't use my $10 for my phone, so it seems to be useless to me now. Is there anything / anyone I can use it for?

        • @brucefromaustralia:

          Thanks. I saw the post.

It's very full on I can see that…

  • thanks snappy, have tried to read that a few times but as I am a dolt I am none the wiser. Would it be a mistake to just go into TLS and ask them?

Ok and now for the noobest q, what's the diff between 2G and 3G?

I also go the $1 starter w' $30 credit via Woolies a few days ago to use for later, hoping to just combine these 2 stater packs to get 30 plus 30 days for total of $11.

  • Didn't work for me. Asked their help desk and they said that it is only available for telstra staff.

  • My order got cancelled (by Telstra). Got an SMS saying it is cancelled.

  • my order was cancelled too((

  • Are Telstra cancelling orders based on incorrect ID details (as they have on past offers) or has it been ozbargained?

    • After going to an actual store, it turns out Telstra cannot spell my name properly. Not exactly sure what happened as I was a postpaid customer and I used to have broadband with them (and the bills had the correct name). The oddest thing is I purchased prepaid SIM online from Telstra before and everything went through fine previously.

The store staff was helpful. People having issues should just go to a store, the phone staff cannot do much to fix the issue.

  • Why are people getting theirs cancelled? you got more than 5 SIMs active?

  • Anyone know can i use it on a xiami redmi note?

  • If you don't have a Telstra postpaid account, there is a chance that the Telstra Control Group will request you to show the ID physically to a Telstra shop person. That person will photocopy the ID document. Not impressed as I used to be a Telstra postpaid customer and Telstra obviously had the details already. I am a prepaid customer and the customer rep knows it, yet that's insufficient.

Also, if you chose to not provide the ID, you will still need to call Telstra Prepaid on 1258880 to cancel the order. Telstra won't refund any pending approval order.

  • +1

Tel$tra…. After asking me to go to a physical store and show my ID to the staff there, Telstra then cancelled the order. I have no issue of Telstra cancelling my order, but if Telstra is planning to do that, why ask me to go to a store to show a staff my ID?

    • Okay, here is some info I found.

      • When the control group does not approve the order, the order will be automatically cancelled by the online order team.
      • However, if you called the control group, they (for some reason) will tell you need to show the ID to the physical store staff.
      • Problem is, there is very little time for you to go to a store, show them the ID, have the ID faxed to control group, have the staff contact the control group, and then the control group inform the online ordering team to re-activate the order. In my case, roughly 12 hours.

What the control group should have told you is the order will be cancelled (rather than going to a store). Also, every time you talk to a different Telstra team, you get to know a bit more about what's going on. Those teams don't seem to talk to each other.

  • xmas code not working for me.

  • Expiry All to use in Australia within 28 days

did this used to be 30 days?

    • Yes, but now it depends on the plan.

    • Mine says 24 Oct 2016 on the back.

  • Looks like the code only good for 1 starter kit per ID. I tried to use the code 3 times to get 3 SIM, after a while 2 of them got canceled, I had already received 1 SIM.

  • Mine arrived y'day and I had to show Startrack delivery guy my drivers license. I can't use it unless I can find a way to use it in my ipad?

  • I've got to the credit card entry section, and is says "Amount to be charged to credit card: $30.00", and the button says "place order". There is no coupon entry code field that I can see, so maybe this deal is expired? I'm unwilling to click "place order" without the total showing as $10 :-)

    • Same for me. Not ordering… lol

  • I got the code xmas in, so maybe expired.

  • Just got a refund for mine.. must be cancelling orders..

    • Wish I'd got a refund as I bought by mistake.

      • If they haven't dispatched the order, call 1300 13 1113 (online order team) to arrange a cancellation.

        • They've delivered it unfortunately.

    • +1

It is the control group screwing people over. They are very inconsistent and they don't know anything about the order. They just don't like the ID you provided (or they want you to show the IDs to a staff in person, have that staff faxed the documents to the team, and call them in time to have the order resurrected). Honestly, that defeats purchasing it online.

Possible reasons for them to do that are: (1) You are no longer a Telstra customer, but they have your inactive account in their system (2) You are only a prepaid customer now (3) You are a customer, but you have an inactive account which for some reason the system link your details to that account to the online order (4) System glitches where they mistyped your surname in some places.

I talked to 3 different groups in Telstra to get as much info as possible. No one group has the complete picture, and they don't take responsibilities (keep blaming other teams). I had to remind them that they are still part of Telstra.

  • Update: just used this to get another 30 days on my ipad put in at the local TLS shop. I said I got it for Christmas when they asked in such a way that I knew I had to be careful with the answer. It's working just fine.
