      The sausages aren't :(
I have never tasted anything so foul, but providing them for my wife means more BBQs!

    • Society has come a long way

  • +6

Yep, great deal. Shame that it's not all vegan though. I picked the stuff that was up last night.

  • +4

    they rarely go on special
would be good if they have had sausages and roast in special as well

  • Anyone had this product before ?

Does it have a long list of chemicals in it ?

    • I have…I didn't mind them…Don't believe these were laden with chemicals in them either.

Well based on the ingredients list you are foolish if you are buying this as a "health" food but all power to you if you just want a vegetarian meal.

        • +1

Burgers as health food - I wish

      • -2

        gluten! AVOID!

        • +32

There are two types of people who buy and eat gluten free food — a group that is intolerant of gluten and cannot digest it and another group who wore Powerbands in 2010.

        • +4

          @scrimshaw:
I only ever have gluten free soy milk on my wheat biscuits.

        • @scrimshaw:

I wish I could give this more upvotes

        • @scrimshaw: you missed the joke

        • +1

@scrimshaw: those powerbands are still for sale. i see shops in asian countries LOL. i once had an argument with a kid about them…who cited tiger woods…zzz

I would probably prefer the lentil patties, myself:

Cooked Brown Lentils (47%), Vegetables (12%) (Carrot, Onion, Potato, Garlic), Vegetable Protein (9%) (Wheat Gluten, Soy Protein), Rolled Oats (9%), Vegetable Oils (Sunola, Canola), Water, Sunflower Seeds, Tapioca Starch, Sugar, Salt, Wheat Fibre, Yeast Extract, Spices, Vegetable Gums (Carrageenan), Acidity Regulator (Citric Acid), Minerals (Zinc, Iron), Vitamin B12.

        • yea, if you're that lazy. lentil burgers are pretty easy to make yourself..just fry lentils in a crapload of oil

  • +3

Yes! I always check the 'gluten free' section of my local Coles as the vego/vegan stuff seems to be on special every other week. This one is a particularly good deal though. I've only tried the chickpea falafels so far, and they were delicious

    • +2

Just tried the mushroom burger - also delicious!

      • Which one is the mushroom burger?

        • +1

Oops, it's Bean Supreme brand. It was also on special, but not half-price (I think it was $1.20 off). It's in the refrigerated section with tofu etc.

        • Thanks!

  • +5

I'm buying ALL of these. Sorry, Adelaide! MWAHAHA.

I'm not a fan of faux meats. That flavour enhancer (635) is always used in combination with unbound glutamic acid. It does not work much on it's own without some msg. It magnifies the msg flavours. The generic described "flavours" plus the yeast, yeast extract and probably the the generic items in "spices" will (in my experience) all be really high in unbound glutamic acid. It means they can say "No added MSG" but MSG is unbound glutamic acid + salt (mono-sodium glutamate). They can add all the components of msg into food, but as long as it was not pure msg when they added that single item, they don't have to disclose it. The reason it is soooo yummy is all the science lab flavours - just like flavoured chips.

Bananas are always great. The packaging is compostable too.

    • +6

What's wrong with MSG? (apart from some people being allergic)

        • +2

Haha you link to the American Chemical Association's video - they are funded by people who make the stuff. Hardly likely they would say anything bad about a product they are paid to say is good…

      • The difference is that the glumatic acid in natural foods (non processed) and that our bodies produce is bound glutamate. It's when we unbound the glutamate in the lab that changes happen. Every one is entitled to their own opinion on MSG I'll stick with neuro-scientists opinion.

That dude is anti-vaccination & anti-water fluoridation, so I don't know if I trust him as a source.

          http://skepdic.com/blaylock.html

        • +2

@Jayphen: You don't have to agree. All I'm saying is the burgers contain MSG. They don't disclose MSG in the ingredients but it's in there. I was not intending to start a MSG good vs bad / fluoridation / vaccination / alien abduction / moon landing hoax type discussion.

The product contains MSG so be informed and eat it if you want. I'm not saying don't eat it. Be informed and choose for yourself.

        • +2

@Jayphen: communist tryng to infiltrate our precious bodily fluids!

        • @clarky:
Forget the chemical properties of MSG for a moment, as it's been embraced as a member of the fifth taste "umami". It's considered harmless in and of itself.

The potential harm with flavour enhancers like MSG is their addictive properties. MSG has been termed "nicotine for food" and in some cases it's an unnecessary addition simply to get people to consume more.

          Cha-ching!

        • @mcmonte: I use MSG at home. No wonder I love cooking so much…

        • +2

@Jayphen: I send text MSG all the time…

        • -2

          @Jayphen:
wait what? compulsory fluoridation of the entire water supply is now considered by the public to be morally acceptable? If fluoride is good for you then people will add it into their water themselves. You don't need to force it on the millions. And it is unethical because you need permission from a patient before they are to be treated with a medicine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informed_consent

Water is used as input for a million different products. Are there studies showing that fluoridated water is also good for my pet budgies?
If everyone knew that the government still is and have been forcing fluoride into their drinking water since the 70s, there would be outrage.

    • +5

While a popular belief holds that large doses of MSG can cause headaches and other feelings of discomfort, in controlled studies scientists have been unable to consistently trigger reactions.

      http://www.fda.gov/food/ingredientspackaginglabeling/foodadd…

Just to be clear the studies show that if you don't know MSG is in food there are no effects caused by it.

      • -2

I disagree. I can tell. I have eaten foods that I have had before but then suddenly I get the MSG headache, only to read the label to discover they have changed the recipe and it now includes MSG. I have had several occurrences where I thought the food was msg free, felt a reaction and then read the label to discover it. Never felt it and check and found no msg.

        • +8

          ah. good old anecdotal evidence

        • +4

You will find a lot of people complain about "headaches from wifi routers" and when a device is placed in the room with them that is just a router case with an LED inside and nothing else they will still experience the headache until the device is removed. The brain is great at re-enforcing your self beliefs.

        • +1

It sounds like you're allergic to MSG then. Some people are - you'll be hard pressed to find something that doesn't trigger an allergy in certain people - and nobody disputes that. Logical people simply argue that based on studies done on a general population, MSG doesn't trigger problems for the average person, and as such, it's no more dangerous than peanuts are dangerous for people who aren't allergic to them.

        • @Agret:

Does the Router get hot enough to "cook" the burgers ?…kill 2 birds etc etc…

    • +1

I thought if it was sold in Australia it had to be listed as having MSG if that's the case? If they're dodging it I'd really like more evidence of this as someone who has had MSG related asthma attacks in the past. Gonna use the Google to see what I can find. Thanks for the heads up tho.

    If only they paid tax

    • +2

      agreed
dont support these tax avoiding freeloaders (sanitarium)

      • +2

Agreed. If only people gave more money to the federal government, we'd all be better off. The federal government would spend it wisely, giving us more Ab-Study and Iraq wars.

      • +1

I dislike religion as much as the next person, but this is one of the most widely available vegetarian brands, so I'll buy it if it's on special.

Plus, if you're (rightly) upset about the tax free status of religion, then surely the seventh day adventists are the biggest culprits here.

      • +2

so, no Ikea products in your place then? No Apple products? Certinally you woldn't use Google? cause you now they all pay their fair share of tax… http://www.smh.com.au/business/ikeas-unfair-advantage-201411…

Meat Chef on a Vegetarian Deal? No surprises on that comment

  • +9

Thanks OP. I am vegetarian and always looking for some special on these generally expensive items.

  • I can't remember the brand but whenever I try vegan/vegetarian style burgers they tend to be really salty. Keen to give these a try but will avoid if it's very salty..

    • I think the mushroom burgers are kinda salty. Then again, that may be all the salt I added. I love salt.

  • +6

yum. love these. my wife and I are vegetarians, which is amusing as her dad is a beef farmer.

    • +1

Perhaps she has seen some of the awful pain the animals go through?

  • +4

The Thai Chilli & Limes cakes are my favourite and only $2.95 at my local Coles.
Don't eat them all the time but they're good for a quick and lazy meal - with salad on the side and you're done.

    • Thanks, I was curious about those ones!

    • +1

I never tried them till last night. Found them so good I went back and bought 8 packs today. Even if you're not generally a fan of sanitarium (I'm not) you may be surprised.

  • -5

I'll take a real burger any day. If you want to lose weight, go hard or go home.

    • +2

I wish that sentence made sense.

    Thanks, love those.

  • Last day folks - time to stock up… or get a rain check.
