Nintendo 2DS - $109 (Was $148), Harvey Norman Clearance Mascot NSW

250

So walked in to the clearance centre and asked the guy what price he could do Nintendo 2DS for and he said $109. They had white and red, and black and blue models. I'm finding it as good as the 3DS without '3D' effect and more comfortable to handle and hold. My 2 cents.

Price may be available at other stores.

EDIT: Slightly off topic, but if you get the red one like i did, why not make it Retro with these NES stickers/Decal! - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-2DS-decal-sticker-cover-ski…

  • I remember when a Gameboy was $99.95 back in the late 90s and included either a Mario or Donkey Kong game for that price. Prices have gone up quite a bit since then.

    • I remember the Game Boy Color launched at $130 RRP in late 1998 which is just over $200 now. A single non-backlit screen, still don't know how we managed to see the display even with a worm light..

The point I'm trying to make is this - almost everything (well, electronics specifically) is cheaper today than it was in the late 90s. Why has the Gameboy then gone up so much?

I remember redwood trees, bumper cars and wolverines.

        • Because monopoly, copyright agreements, more materials used, consumers willing to spend up to certain points and R&D etc etc.

Price is not determined solely on cost, especially when the competition is monopolistic in nature. So I doubt anyone can answer you your question fully and in detail without assuming stuff.

But given that consoles usually try to recoup their cost by having cheap consoles and expensive accessories and games, I assume that it's the costs attached to it that's driving the price of the consoles.

          @altomic: I remember the GameGear

        • @AznMitch:
Copyrights like patents are also a form of monopoly, but I think patents is the bigger one in the case of game consoles.

You need an army of lawyers and a massive cache of ammunition (patents) to fight the patent war. If you don't have patents of your own to leverage against competitors, you have no way to threaten countersuit.

        • @Kanasuke: When I said copyrights, I meant patents and copyrights.

That's why most companies tend to do cross-licensing agreements, this is why people were worried about Nokia Mobiel Phone sector getting absorbed into MS. Since Nokia, network sector, doesn't produce cellphones anymore, they don't need to do cross-licensing agreements. Then again, it's Nintendo we are talking about, they probably have a lot of patents up their sleeves.

      • I remember the grey game brick has a single monochrome non backlit screen and the brighter the sun gets the easier it was to play super Mario land.

I think its in a box somewhere with the front screen plate missing, and a copy of Pokemon red still in it. I'm pretty sure it still works.

      • I still remember playing The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX :D It was gewd.

But, back then $99.95 was not as cheap as $99.95 today because of inflation.

      • Paid $99 for mine during Good Guys clearance. It's a great unit. No idea why anyone would want, let alone pay extra for 3D.

        • This does not fit into you pocket but a 3ds can

        • false, the 2DS (which this deal is about) has an awkward shape for pockets as it doesn't fold.

        • I said no idea why anyone would pay extra for 3D. If you need pocket-ability, then yes that's a fair enough reason.

        • @PainToad: I'm kinda with you. For me I'll never carry it in my pocket anyway, it will live in my bag. Also I still find the hinging of the 3ds to be a weak point and a little sloppy. Be great if the 3DS hinged like a MacBook or like the old Game&Watch.

        • @PainToad: Ah cool! mine lives in an OzBargain Belkin iPad Mini Case i got from DSE for $2!

"I remember when I was 10, you could get a packet of sweets from the shop for 50 cents! It'd have 9 red gummy snakes, 5 chocolate lollies, and 2 packets of cigarettes in it!"

Prices go up coz the world moves forward, technology especially.

    • Inflation!

with the New 3DS out, this unit isn't very desirable.
the New 3DS has extra buttons and a faster processor. Though they basically do the same thing, there is a chance new games won't support the original 3DS/2DS and only support the New 3DS. (1 has already been announced)

I think someone from that post said that most of the games will be supporting both new and the old hardware. Even then, as a fan of Monster Hunter, I am compelled to like the new 3DS XL as I've heard from people that MH4 is optimised for the newer hardware.

Probably why it went on sales. :P

    • True, but I went for cost Vs experience here. New 3DS is nice but about twice as much. I'll prob get the next 3DS model when it comes out.

      • I think the 'New' 3DS is the last portable in this gen of the 3DS line. The next one to be revealed for next gen will most likely be the 'Fusion DS'.

  • Although a good price for the standalone, those $148 2DS bundles with Pokemon essentially put the 2DS at ~$100

    • Yes if you are after Pokemon. EB Games have a good Mario Kart digital download/3DS XL bundle for $199 if you are into bundles. https://ebgames.com.au/3ds-158355-Nintendo-3DS-XL-Red--Mario…

    • +1

Does JB have the 2DS Pokemon XY bundles? I want to price match + 20% off voucher to bring it down to ~$130. If not, I could still match the standalone unit for $89 after voucher.

  • Same price as TGG had it during the eBay sunday (+del)

There were several 2DS at Harvey Norman highpoint for $74 last week.
Didn't advertise after previously getting abused for pushing old tech.

    • +1

I have never owned a 2ds/3ds but I'm liking it, loving revisiting retroNES so be proud of old tech :)
