Wow…. that's an awesome machine. Outside my budget, but great value for the specs. And for 2kg….

    • +5

It's pretty crazy they can fit so much into a small package. And it still has a spare 2nd mSATA bay AND a 2.5" drive bay to add a 1TB drive to if you wished.

  • +6

I just wish it had a matte screen. I can't stand fingerprint magnet/reflective screens. But hey, some people love them.

Anyway, it's a good deal as are all of Logical Blue's products. My next laptop will be from Logical Blue in a few months when I've saved up a bit ;-)

    • +5

You can get the same laptop at www.affordablelaptops.com.au with a 1080p matte IPS planel for $1399 with free shipping(or spend $89 to get the glossy QHD screen). It's labelled as the Metabox W230SS though. Metabox also have a special at the moment where you can upgrade the SSD to 480GB, have a 1TB 5400rpm drive installed as well, plus extend the warranty for another $169.
You have to get in before 31st of January though as that's when the special runs out.

      • That might be true but consider that ours has the much faster Plextor M6M SSD (much more expensive for us to buy too), 3 Year Warranty and Intel 7260AC wireless.

Also we don't charge any fee for Credit Card or PayPal. A lot of sites charge 1.5 or more.

        • It's really good that you guys don't pass on a surcharge for CC purchases. That in itself is very positive. :)
In regards to the SSD upon looking at specs the 240GB Plextor does not outperform the 250GB Samsung EVO which is a free option on the metabox.
And if the person chooses the $169 upgrade package I mentioned before they get 7260 wireless too. But of course that puts it well above the price we have here.

What you're offering is a still a really good deal though. :)
It's just that if people wanted to tweak what you're offering a little they might be able to find something more to their liking at where I mentioned. :)

          @fatpizza:

Thanks, that is true, but that is a 2.5" drive. Which is an even lower cost. I really wouldn't recommend that on this notebook as that eliminates any mass storage devices being added as a 2nd drive.

Ideally the configuration we have offered is the best for enthusiasts and tinkerers as you can upgrade it yourself later with a 2nd drive but maintain high speed primary.

    • Looks good.

Logical Blue Rep jackkel, is there a way to downgrade to the 1080p matte display? Myself, and quite a few others would prefer not to get the "free upgrade" to gloss.

13.3" 3200x1800 IPS Glossy Display [Free Upgrade]

      • +13

Okay. I have added the option now.

  • +1

Have you guys ever thought about building HTPCs? I would love something with one of those onboard Nvidia graphics.

    • +9

I have thought about it. Combining a small form factor notebook mainboard into a thin aluminium custom designed case. Add in a small watercooling unit to keep it completely silent. It is achievable, there is some BIOS/EC issues to overcome not having a keyboard and fan etc. Would probably need a kickstarter to fund it because there is high tooling costs.

      • +4

I am totally DTF (Down to Fund).

The Gigabyte Brix is probably the closest comparison however they end up at the $1000ish mark which basically makes it near in the range of screenless laptop. Kind of rough.

        • I just had a look at that. It seems a bit rich considering it's got no RAM or HDD, just a barebone. And it only takes an mSATA from what I can see? I would think people that want a HTPC would probably prefer a large spin drive also no? I mean you could go external but then it's not as pretty.

        • @jackkel:

I personally would want a box that had an mSata port and single 2.5" bay. The mSata for a small OS based SSD then the 2.5 for a 1TB+ HD. You could do it in a few combinations though.

Spec wise I would want something like this (with the option of selecting either or):
          - Core i3/i5
          - 4gb/8gb ram
          - mSata Port
          - 2.5" HD Port
          - Onboard Nvidia Graphics (ie GTX860M)
          - Onboard Wifi / +BT

Curiously what does a single CPU/GPU Mobo go for? (If you can share)

        • +2

          @DrStinge:

I agree with your spec. For interests sake you could use the motherboard in something like this which is thin and small. It has 2x mSATA bays and a 2.5" bay. Negating the fact that size isn't exactly an issue you can put in a 3.5" drive if you wanted and convert it to the 2.5" bay. All of this isn't an issue.

Price for the board I can't really say. Plus you need more than that, you will need the power button, wifi, power supply etc.

I can say with some level of certainty though that it could have a retail of around $850 for a barebone with CPU and GTX860m. A lot of the cost of these machines is with the LCD display, memory, SSD etc.

I have a heavy industrial laser cutter in my warehouse which could be used for a prototype knock up.

I think it's worth exploring if there is a market for it.

    • +1

I am not too sure if this is a valid option, but what about a steam machine? The alienware i saw at jbhifi is pretty tiny and has nvidia graphics.

      • Yep, that's what I did. I bought the Alienware Alpha i3 version off Dell via eBay for $680 ($20 off is valid til tonight only).

It also came with a Dell Venue 8 Pro, so I'm hoping to flog that off for $200.

All in all ~$480 for the PC. Add another ~$42 for 4GB ram, add another ~$80 for a 500GB hybrid SSHD and it'll play every game in medium to ultra settings. I'm loving it so far.

Obviously comparing a micro PC like the Alienware to this monster laptop is like comparing apples to oranges.

        • That is an extremely neat solution for a uni student.

        • Will this do XBMC and output DTS-MA and Dolby Digital True HD audio Codecs?

  • What's the config of that 8GB 1600Mhz RAM? The upgrade to 16GB is a bit too steep.
    Pity the glossy screen again.

    • +4

1x 8GB 1600Mhz Crucial. You are welcome to upgrade it yourself for less, it won't void warranty.

  • I'm looking for a 13" Laptop at the moment and this one has some nice specs, but, I'm wary of the 13.3-inch QHD+ (3200x1800)display. A lot of what I've read indicates that such a high resolution either doesn't work properly or is totally unnecessary on a 13" laptop. What to do?

    • +2

scaling solves most problems in windows 8.1, and windows 10 will improve on it further. applying a 2x scaling factor would bring it to same sizing as a 1600x900 display, which is just about right for a 13"

      • -1

I hope Horize stuff will always be Windows 7 compatible. I hate this new MS direction of making the OS work on all kinds of devices and locking people into online accounts and the store and whatnot. Seriously thinking of moving to Apple for the first time. Of course, Apple have their own faults too. The best thing about Windows vs Apple was the ability to control the OS. Not anymore. It's now designed to steer you into MS-world.

        • Windows 10 is amazing and you don't need an account for it.

    • +5

It's funny when we had the W230ST last year with the FHD panel, we had an overwhelming amount of people ask for a higher resolution panel. I think that using this in a Windows 7 environment would be a bad idea. You can scale it up with Windows 8.1 and it works really well. I am sure it will get even better when they have the next Windows. Everything is slowly moving to higher than FHD panels now, so I'd feel more comfortable with a QHD panel than FHD for longevity.

      • +6

You are a great ambassador for your company jackkel, thank-you.

    • +1

It is definitely a compromise, but i like it as an option (in this case, free upgrade). To not get the qhd+ because of scaling No longer is a good enough reason as scaling in windows has improved alot since those complaints.

In saying that, your milage may vary as there are still reports of certain games breaking with windows scaling above 100%.

Compromise of qhd+ vs fhd = battery life, glossy display, maybe accuracy of colour/refresh rate depending on panel (Might not apply in this case as LBO takes care of their customers and tend not to cheap out on quality ever).

  • What's the battery life like?

    • Depends on the application really. But conservatively I'd say 4 hours. You can get longer with screen dimming etc. You won't get 4 hours gaming though!

      • +2

Bummer! That makes it tough to use it as a daily driver instead of it being a pure gaming laptop. Great value for money but battery life is a bit on the lower side.

        • +1

you could just plug it in

      • +1

Youll be lucky to get even two hours gaming. Battery life is whats compromised with the small form factor and powerful hardware.

I doubt 4hours is conservative also.

  • EDIT: Please delete

  • +4

+1 for the "No operating system". Nice to see Linux users not being forced to pay a Microsoft Tax.

  • I find this resolution incredibly annoying with a 13 inch laptop. Currently have an xps 13 with 1080p. Though the specs on this is incredible. If you have a larger laptop with around the same specs and is on sale in the future I'll definately pick it up :).

    • +2

If you scale the screen 2:1 it will be 1600x900 which is a good resolution for 13 inch. And will still get you the high DPI. No problem!

You can have it in 1920x1080 Matte also if you prefer.

  • +16

Due to popular request we have added a matte 1920x1080 display option with a downgrade.

    • Hi, will this change the battery life? Keen on the laptop, just wish it could somehow have a longer battery.

      • +1

With the tiniest bit of Margin it would yes. However it's not noticeable.

This has actually pretty decent battery for a gaming notebook. If you need longer you really should consider just an ultrabook.

  • +14

plus vote for the most helpful and responsive store rep I have seen in a long time

  • Can i change anything to put this down to $1350?

    • If you removed the mSATA SSD and downgraded the wireless you could get it close.

      • What if i want to downgrade to 128gb ssd and i5?

        • Mmmm sorry that won't work. The i5 will drop your price again for sure. But the price difference for us at the moment between 128 and 256gb is not that large.

  • How long will it take to get the machine? (Living in Sydney)
As I'm going overseas early Feb and was thinking I might be able to claim GST.

    Thanks.

EDIT: saw 15 working days :( , thanks anyway

    • +6

If you are going overseas we can ship to your address overseas and it will automatically deduct the GST. No mucking around with the tourist refund scheme, our site will do it for you.

      • then you may be charged with import duty?

        • By that point it'll be used and not subject to it, right?

        • You may be, depending on where it is sent to of course.

  • +12

Note that there is one more totally unique advantage of buying from LBO. Read this part of their warranty:

"We believe it's not Okay for your machine to have any pixel imperfections, or to have your machine at a service centre for months on end. LBO provides a 90 day 100% pixel perfect policy. Meaning if you have any dead, stuck or bright pixels within 90 days we will replace the panel for you".

To my best knowledge this is THE BEST faulty pixel warranty in the industry, which typically considers 4-6 dead pixels to be no fault condition! There are a few which come close (Metabox offers 7 days), but dead/stuck pixels is something hardly ever mentioned by other sellers or manufacturers. You buy a new laptop, you are lucky… or you are not. For that single thing LBO deserves highest respect!

  • what is the brand of the touchpad?

    • +1

      It's a Synaptics touchpad.

  • How does a W230SS-SE2 compare to a W230SS?

    • Hi,

It is the same base model, we have just called it 'SE2' (Special Edition #2) to allow for the upgrades and changes. It makes it easier for us and you to identify.

  • Would this GPU (860M) be able to run Dragon Age: Inquisition comfortably? What kind of frame rates would it pull?

  • Where do we get updated drivers for this laptop once purchased?

    • We have a driver repository on our website. Other than that for things like nVidia drivers they should autoupdate.

  • -8

    Damn that's the price of 3 PS4s -_-

    • +3

Damn that's the price of a rusty old 1974 Torana

  • What's the Gamut percentage of the IPS QHD+ Panel?
also any idea who is the supplier of the panel?

    • As well as for the 1080p panel thanks.

    • +1

Both the panels are around 65% NTSC. For high colour gamut I would recommend something more around the 15.6" size which you can get with 95% NTSC.

  • I thought it was 3x USB 3.0 ?

I have the W230SS bought from LBO last year. Had a problem with nVidia drivers but the guys @LBO directed me to a solution pretty quickly.

The only thing I don't like is the high resolution 3200x1800. It was too small for me.

    • so do you use 1600X900 instead?

      • Yes

        • and any issues with using 1600X900 all the time?

        • @bashar20:

None so far. Mind you I'm not a hardcore gamer.

        • @nekov:
so are you saying that high resolution is mo longer a problem once set to 1600x900? or is it still too small to read text?

        • @nekov:

and what else you don't like?

        • @bashar20:

Battery life is not that good.

The touch pad is a bit big and sensitive and I keep on hitting it when typing.

Apart from that everything else is good.

        • @bashar20:
          No problems for me

  • Is it touchscreen?

    • It is not touch screen.

      • How much is it to make it touchscreen?

        • Hi,

Unfortunately it does not support touch screen capability. We cannot upgrade that.

  • Rep: Do you guys have finance available?

    • Sorry no we do not.

  • +1

$30 and an upgrade to 512GB SSD https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172758 is better than the extra 2 years of warranty. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172758

    • +1

That was a bargain at the time and this is a bargain at the time now too. That was when exchange rate was nearly 10% different to today.

  • how thick is it?

    • noticed the link in the original post to the specifications?

    • It is 31mm thick.

  • How is this laptop when it comes to games like World of Warcraft and Diablo 3? Not really into FPS games or anything too demanding. And also, this order is strictly delivered in 15 business days time or can be expedited?

  • Has anyone had their order status changed away from "Payment accepted" or even received their laptop yet? I ordered mine on the 29th so today is the 16th business day starting from the day after the order was made. I asked them for a status check using the form on their website yesterday and still no reply.

EDIT: Got a reply. It's delayed by a few more days. :\
