  • -8

I don't get it. Why so many +s? Is it ever appropriate to call/refer to a woman as a bitch, when its so obviously being used as a derogatory term?

    • +1

never met a woman who was a nasty piece of work? lucky you.
i've referred to other women as bitches, cos simply that's just what they were.

      • -6

        @tdw,

If by bitch, you mean a woman who is strong, assertive, unapologetic, intelligent, fiercely protective, in control; who knows what she wants and goes for it… then I think all women should strive to be a 'bitch' because not being a 'bitch' would suck; not being a 'bitch' would mean not having your voice heard.
And yes, I do a know a few 'bitches'. I even married one. Hopefully, I'm raising one.

On the other hand, if you're talking about a woman who is a " nasty piece of work",I've met few of those too. I prefer to call them "a***holes".It still gets my point across, without being sexist. Plus their look on their face when you call them that is just priceless :)

        • +1

one can be assertive without being a jerk.

bitches, however, don't know where to draw the line and have no objections to stepping on other people's backs to get what they think they're entitled to. they're straight-up bullies and it's little surprise why men who encounter bitches can develop misogynistic views of women as a whole.

        • -2

@tdw: what would you call a man who doesn't "know where to draw the line and have no objections to stepping on other people's backs to get what they think they're entitled to.(who is a) straight-up bullies"?

        • +3

@Jar Jar Binks: a prick. or Lance Armstrong. same thing.

        • @tdw:
          A lance armstrong? :)

If this was a deal for a "fashion necklace" with the words " Trust no prick" , how many ozbargainers do you think would have upvoted it? 52 and counting? o.O

        • @Jar Jar Binks: not aware of the astonishing "achievements" of the Lance? he fits that description perfectly.

not for me to speculate on plus votes for trust no prick…but this post has been up for 20 hours now, so go cry to a mod if it upsets your sensibilities.

        • +1

If by bitch, you mean a woman who is strong, assertive, unapologetic, intelligent, fiercely protective, in control; who knows what she wants and goes for it…

I often call myself a bitch, with a wry or cheeky smile… or playfully, in a semi-fierce way. For those exact reasons :) When I use that term towards myself, that's pretty much what I mean. Strong, bold, assertive, I know what I want and will achieve it despite whatever anyone tells me or whatever obstacles are in my way or however long it takes me to get there, etc. A fighter. Fierce.

With a bit of the other connotations you might not want… like 'don't mess with her or you gon' regret it..' lol. Maybe. I mean, I'm fairly timid in most respects, very warm, very caring, generous… extremely caring actually.. I live for others and love being that way… but, I guess when people hurt me it cuts deep and I do voice it to them so they know it. Shit like that doesn't slide.

Perhaps I have a strange concept in my head of what a bitch is…

(then I have a different definition for 'bitch' when applied to others. I do call guys bitches too.) lol. No logic, really..

        • @Jar Jar Binks:

If this was a deal for a "fashion necklace" with the words " Trust no prick" , how many ozbargainers do you think would have upvoted it? 52 and counting? o.O

Should we post this and see? lol

        • -2

@tdw: anyone who generalises about sexes, races, etc based on bad experiences with a small section of those "groups" needs to do a lot of growing up.

        • -1

@Possumbly: small section? i have dealt with girls/women from school, uni, work, sport and other day-to-day interactions.

sounds like you're generalising about me, too.

        • -1

@tdw: no need to generalise about you, your posts say it all for themselves. You can apparently understand why some men are misogynists. Really? Tarring people with the same brush based on your enormous life experience is, like the trinket in the deal, puerile rubbish. Most men are smarter and more perceptive than you think, as are most women. Pity if your views of either were tainted by bad expereinces but that still wouldn't make them any more accurate.

        • @Possumbly: you can make an effort to understand where people are coming from with their views, regardless of agreement. or you can sit there on your high horse calling everything that's an affront to your moralistic superiority, puerile.

so now you can ask yourself why the mods haven't removed this post yet?
oh wait don't tell me you think they're "puerile" as well? :D

        • @waterlogged turnip: lol… let's not.

        • -1

@tdw: nonsensical argument, much like your gross generalisation about men and women earlier. The mods aren't arbiters of morals or ethics. I'm not even vaguely surprised that this rubbish would appeal to a certain demographic and I'm aware that some voters simply like to thumb their noses at anything - after all it's no big deal right? Depends on the message it sends - in some circumstances it might even be amusing but broadly speaking it has very negative connotations. I can see you're having fun, just don't accept your extrapolations. If I did my wife and two adult daughters would rightly give me hell.

        • @Possumbly: you want to talk about how this is such a grave example of sexism, this is nothing compared to the crap that happens out in the real world. priorities.

besides, how far can us women advance when we're getting knifed by our so-called sisters?

The mods aren't arbiters of morals or ethics.
and yet you've freely taken that role upon yourself..

        • -1

@tdw: no I'm simply providing a different view to you, as well as calling your attitudes out. Yes there are enormous injustices in the "real world" and women bear the brunt of many of them. Does this mean we shouldn't react to certain messages we think are broadly unacceptable from time to time? To be frank your comment to JJB was arguably more objectionable than the necklace and nothing you've said since has improved it. I suggest you read Wicket's comment at the bottom.

        • @Possumbly: i don't feel i need to "improve" anything. after all, i'm also providing a differing viewpoint to yours, and rebutting your rebuttals.

i'll react to the actual unacceptable stuff like rape jokes. this is a mere droplet of piss in the ocean.

finally, being female, i'll decide what i do and don't get offended about

        • @tdw: you can indeed decide what offends you tdw - we all do and it's water off a duck's back generally for many of us - but fortunately you don't get to decide what's acceptable to your sex, or me, in particular circumstances. I've read turnip's comments and they're pretty much on the mark. I think we all agree it's relatively trivial but for some sad folk (men in particular as the stats show) all the little signals add up to justification for their negative attitudes to women. Something to ponder.

Finally, I should and do apologise for my generalisation above - can't edit it, but the first line in particular was very poor.

        • +1

@waterlogged turnip: I wish I knew people as caring as you in real life… :(

    • -5

Couldn't agree more. Puerile sexist rubbish, a poor reflection on the poster as much as the w@nkers who voted for it. Now wait for the excuses - it was tongue in cheek, we're having a lend, it's a joke. Yep, a joke without any wit or humour.

      • +1

Tell it to my Dog.. she's a real Bitch!

    • 7 anonymous negs and only person who has the courage to explain his stance. Hmmm…

@tdw, you're so ballsy, that I'm going to have to assume that you are a woman? :b

      • Not unexpected. Some of them wouldn't be capable of making a rational and adult comment, others don't have the balls to put their names to their views - even their anonymous tags.

      • takes a bitch to know a bitch ;)

(i did mention my gender further up)

        • +2

@Scrooge McDuck: or "woof" as Peterman would say..

        • +1

@waterlogged turnip: lol don't you mean, 'reeeawrr'?

        • +1

@tdw: See, now Elaine - that's an awesome woman. Intelligent. Assertive. Strong. Can hold her own in a 'world' dominated by men. Holds a good job where she clearly deserves/earns more respect than her boss. She's the kinda woman you wanna be.

I wonder what Elaine the character would think of the term 'bitch' used in this context. Would she take it as being derogatory or take it as being tongue in cheek? I wonder myself what the intention of the original phrase was. Does that even matter, though? Or does ones personal interpretation matter more than the original intention?

Am I reading too much into this now?…

It's interesting how polarising this has been. I can certainly understand why, and see it from both sides equally. I guess I have a tendency to take stuff like this (costume jewellery especially) as a pisstake though. It's meant for females to wear.. not men… hence it confirming my gut feeling that it was tongue in cheek, playful, self deprecating humour (which I have no issue with, but then, I'm half Pommy). I can see how others might not find that so 'okay'. But why take such trivial things so seriously when there are bigger issues to worry about out there?

        • @waterlogged turnip: i think Elaine's confident enough to take being called a bitch as a compliment :D

i remember being called a kangaroo bitch by an American once and i thought it was quite funny. the way i see it, you can let little things like that bother you or you can save your energy for fighting the more serious stuff. i mean, is this on par with crap like rape "jokes"?

you're spot on about the self-deprecating humour. we have to laugh at ourselves every now and then or risk becoming prudes.

  • Thanks, would be an excellent gift for pasadala's mum.

    • Better liase with him about colours, I'd hate for her to get two the same.

    • lol someone's out to impress.

  • OP, I've just clicked on the link to see if their was a "trust no prick" version of that necklace and noticed that the price is showing as usd $3.99 and not $1.96

    • +1

well there you go…you snooze, you lose :p
