Have been watching this for a bit since the previous deal as I've been wanting to purchase a windows 8 tablet. With the waterpik deal that came on recently i combined both to save on shipping :)
79$USD + POSTAGE 10$USD+
makes it nearly 20$US cheaper than the last deal posted by ec.

Enjoy :)

    Mmm, black licorice.

  • As I understand it, the signature edition available directly from Microsoft comes sans bloatware. Does anybody know how intrusive it is on the normal version and/or how difficult to remove?

    • Considering the 32GB of storage, it's probably not going to be a huge amount. I'd hazard a guess that there'd be some flavour of antivirus trial, the Office installer\trial stub which you can use to activate the Office license it comes with, and by the look of the HP website and the Anandtech review, HP COnnected Music, HP Connected Photo and some HP utilities for registration and dealing with system settings.

Normal version is fine. Only a small number of HP apps. Not a big deal.

  • Recommend this if your ordering the tablet :)

  • Anyone using a keyboard case with this? Is there an official one?

    • Got my eye on the Wedge keyboard

But then the KB + cover is basically almost the price of the tablet itself, lol.

      • I just missed out on ordering that one for $1 after cashback :(

How can 1GB of RAM possibly be enough to run a full OS well? There are android phones with 3GB.

    • +7

Its all about optimization for specific hardware. You can read reviews and see that it does perfectly fine with 1gb.

I think you've asked a genuine question, and I think the answer is yes, it all depends on optimisation. Not saying that Android is not optimised poorly, Windows 8.1 I think is optimised (Performance wise, if we go into UI, I hated it until I got used to it) really well.

      • +2

Truth; Windows is the most funded OS in the world.

    • Swap file. The end.

I have this tablet, picked up for $99 2 weeks ago! Amazing!!Does everything you need, just like a laptop, but fits in your pocket! 1 gig ram is definitely not an issue. I use as a plex server linked to a NAS drive, media player, email, web surfing etc.
even had Skyrim running on it just because you can!
Get one!! its $80 for goodness sake. windows tablets are a good thing.

bought one, thanks for sharing this.

  • For this spec, what you suppose to do on it? Handy though

z-wave home automation controller is what came to mind for me. Could replace the old hard wired front door bell/camera console.

Also, could mount it on the bathroom wall as a permanent spotify controller for my Beep.

Point is, just about anything 'frivolous' at this price.

Also keep in mind that this tablet comes with a 1 year subscription of Office 365 Personal which would normally cost $70USD / $89AUD http://products.office.com/en-us/office-365-personal. You are basically getting this tablet for $19USD

  • Is this full windows or rt?

    • Windows 8.1 with Bing, which is basically just 8.1 with Bing as the default search engine within Internet Explorer (which you can change anyways).

      http://www.howtogeek.com/195934/what-exactly-is-windows-8.1-…

      • So can i take the serial key from this and use it on a PC or whatever Or is device locked etc

        • I think it is device locked, but I don't know, to be honest.

        • Don't think that will work. It is Windows 8.1 Bing Edition, unless you have the ISO for that particular edition.

        • @netsurfer:

So not possible to reformat and put a normal copy of Windows 8.1 on it?

        • +1

@viggenn: Should be possible. People have been trying to install Windows 10 Tech Preview on it.

normal copy of Windows 8.1 on it?

It IS a normal edition of Windows.

The ONLY difference is the search engine is set to Bing, and there's a few system Bing apps installed.

You can change it to Google if you wanted to and the Bing crap can be uninstalled. You can also install Chrome / Firefox and use it instead of IE.

There is functionally, no restriction on what you can use. It's not the same deal as it was with the Windows 7 Starter editions that were popular with low end devices back in 09.

The reason why Bing editions of Windows exist is to encourage hardware manufacturers to switch from using Google's operating systems (mainly Chrome OS and Android) and to make more Windows devices, by making the license free. The limitation however is that the manufacturers are not allowed to customize it with any Google software and it has to be shipped with Bing software on it to the end consumer.

The end user however doesn't have the same restriction, you can basically ignore the bing stuff and use Google as your search engine if you prefer.

The key is baked to the BIOS, once you have logged on and connected to the internet, it will activate and be tied to that computer forevermore.

To be honest, even if you didn't activate it I don't even know if it would work in another PC because it is baked into the BIOS and any attempts at activating it on a non-HP machine would probably result in the activation being rejected because it's not on a HP.

  • The biggest advantage of this tablet is it has Adobe Flash support (you get both touch screen version of I.E.) and desktop version of I.E. Speed is not an issue. You can install windows apps (intel Atom processor - kinda like a netbook), so no problem.

However, as much as I like Phone 8, the desktop apps are not that easy to use with a touch screen (hard to select a menu item for example).

Hardware wise, there is the headphones noise issue. It is actually quite bad when you use a good pair of headphones (noise cancelling headphones make the situation worse) - quite annoying, but dirt cheap headphones are not as heavily affected (because they don't really playback the details). An alternative is Bluetooth headphones.

  • Is there any cheaper option than the following for hooking up external USB keyboards/monitors/etc and charging the device at the same time???

  • Can I screencast to Chromecast, if I install Chrome browser on it?

  • i hear that win 10 will only be available for tablets 8 inches and up that have win 8.1

    • New tablets of 7" won't get the desktop…

      http://www.techradar.com/au/news/mobile-computing/tablets/sa…

Though users of new Windows 10 devices requiring legacy app compatibility may be forced to an 8-inch or larger device, current 7-inch slates won't be required to make that change if you're looking to upgrade an existing tablet to Windows 10.

"Folks asking about updating 7" existing devices to Win10 — you keep your desktop, you get continuum. Go try it yourself now," Belfiore wrote on Twitter.

Owners of devices like the HP Stream 7, 7-inch Toshiba Encore Mini, and Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 can rest assured that when they upgrade to Windows 10, they'll be able to keep the classic desktop and the ability to run legacy Win32 programs.

      • By the sounds of it win 10 will go over to 7 inch tablets but the UI will change and they can only install apps from the app store….. pretry harsh restrictions if you ask me.

  • Can this play movies in 720p no problems?

    • Yeah..in a canter

    • Looks like a good deal too but it doesn't ship to Aus. So by the time you add on mail forward, it's not such a bargain.

  • So tempted to purchase but my tab 3 8 inch is back to samsung for a repair.

  • Bought one thanks

  • Is the 8inch also a good price at $150? 7inch may be just a little small.

  • Was tempted in getting one until I found out it doesn't support MHL.
Would love to project it to a TV other than Miracast which I don't like.

  • how can the battery last 8hrs running windows 8?

    • using a technology called Microsoft Magic ;)

  • did the price go up to $89.99?

    • Appears so! Looks like it got Ozbargained ;) I got in last night and it's already shipped. I am continually impressed by Amazon.

      • damn prices just went up again to 94.99

I admit that this tablet comes with a better screen compared with Pendo pad but I would prefer the HDMI port which I can easily plug the tablet to a TV. However, the pando one gets terrible screen.

    • +1

The Pendo screen isn't too bad.
My HDMI port doesn't work so I need to call Pendo Support and hoepfully get them to repair/replace it. :-(

      • Mine WIFI module is quite problematic. Sometimes it gets disconnected and sometimes gets only 1 or 2 bars of signal strength. I have really no idea about it….

        It's still usable anyway.

    • +1

If you have a Push2TV you can just Miracast the Stream 7 to your TV - works like a dream no need for HDMI at all.

      • But you still need additional device which gives you additional lags (I am not so sure but it is happened in Airplay) and potential risk of connection problems.

        Anyway, it's better than nothing.

  • Price have creeped up. Expired offer.

  • Is there much difference between the stream 7 and stream 8. Maybe the stream 8 is worth getting considering people are saying it will be getting the new os?

    • An extra inch larger screen being an 8" tablet. That is one difference. Official Specs for the HP Stream 8 says it comes with Windows 8.1 with Bing 32 which is exactly the same operating system which the HP Stream 7 comes with. I don't think there's a massive difference there when it comes to software. So there is no new operating system that comes with the HP Stream 8. So those people don't know what they are talking about.

      • The new OS is Windows 10 support on the 8" that will not be available on the 7".

  • +1

It is back at USD $79. TechRadar says this about the Windows 10 8-inch screen issue
"If you appreciate the ability to run full Win32 apps on a tablet form factor smaller than 8 inches, you should pick up any one of the existing 7-inch tablet models before Windows 10 officially launches. According to Microsoft Operating Systems Group corporate vice president Joe Belfiore, new Windows 10 hardware with displays smaller than 8 inches will not ship with the classic desktop environment and cannot run legacy apps."

  • hmm, anyone else's delivery gotten delayed?

    • Yeah, my order is showing up with 'Airline Delay' :(

      • haha at least your order status is more specific. Mine is just showing as "Sorry, your package is delayed because an issue with the carrier."

        • +1

My Amazon says that too, I'm using the i-Parcel tracking info for more 'detailed' info lol

        • @viggenn: Received mine today but i did purchase it earlier than you guys.

This one has some backlight yellow bleeding at the bottom of the screen which is normal for this tablet and i guess a bit excusable for a 80$US tablet. Apart from that my initial play with it seems it to be a pretty solid tablet.

  • Got mine today. Wholy crap this thing is a brick! haha. Can't complain for $100 but compared to nexus 7 2012, the nexus 7 felt heaps lighter, and is slimmer

  • I just received mine (it took about one week from Amazon US) and I love it, it's an amazing gadget. Thanks tds.
