Today we’re happy to share that we’re adding even more to the free edition. We’re removing all feature restrictions from OneNote 2013. Starting today you’ll be able to access the full power of OneNote on your PC, including these features previously reserved for paid editions:

  • Password protected sections: Add a password to protect sensitive information.
  • Page history: Easily see or go back to prior versions of a page.
  • Audio & video recording: Take notes while recording & easily jump to relevant sections later.
  • Audio search: Search for a word in a voice or video recording.
  • Embedded files: Insert Office documents or other files directly in your notebook.

Click here for 32-bit download. See here for 64-bit (thanks aznain for the tip).

yeh that's kinda what i meant… dont know if it belongs in forums coz it's always free… but its an ozb gray area i suppose. i actually downloaded this 2 days ago

        • Clarification from Mod: It's a software package with significant interest, that was not free previously but has now been made free, i.e. it's not from an unknown publisher nor a non-free turned freemium. It's not "always free" as it was not free previously. In this case, the deal can be posted once and once-only.

        • -7

but has now been made free

          As per caveat,

"The free edition of OneNote stores your notes on OneDrive for easy access across all your devices and works whether you’re online or offline."

I don't think it can be considered truly free if you cannot store files where you want.

Thinking aloud here - is being neg'ed for stating a fact means that the act of stating a fact is unappreciated or that the fact itself is unfavourable? Or, maybe it doesn't meany anything at all.

@AlexF: You stated a fact followed by an opinion. It's the opinion people are negging your for.

        • +1

@AlexF: Hey that's the way some people here think. I voted the deal up, I saw this was becoming an issue of where it was posted and I reported it to clarify it with the mods. The mods did this but my post still gets voted down. I have no idea why? Maybe some don't read what is posted clearly. They just see "report" and think I was against the post? Its Ozbargain many vote down for many reasons including not understanding.

        • You stated a fact followed by an opinion

I think it's generally accepted that if an app limits functionality and that functionality is restored if it is bought, then the former is is not free but freemium.

So unless it allows you store your files on every single cloud service, you wouldn't consider it free?

Funny, I would actually consider cloud storage a premium feature! It's so handy - I can take notes on my laptop or tablet and by the time I get to my desktop, everything's synced. When I go home, my home desktop is also synced.

I can also then whip out my phone and everything will be synced as well.

If OneNote only supported local storage, I wouldn't find it anywhere near as useful. It'll be like going back to the days of paper notepads where you only have one physical copy and can't back it up.

        • @ozhunter: Now you are going too far the other way.

          every

          They never said that.

You sound like a journalist. :)

The pollie never said they wouldn't challenge, ergo they are challenging.

Their point whether I or you agree is that the paid version gives you more than just Msoft's cloud service. So the manufacturer thinks they can get money for this extra feature so they expect a demand for it.

So the definition is correct regardless of whether you or I will use this "extra" feature

But the point is mute anyway as the mods (The biggest Mod of all - Scotty) has ruled this is ok

Thanks for posting, otherwise many of us wouldn't know about this!

  • Any news on Office 2013/4 Mac Edition?

  • Thanks TA, glad they've done this! Will come in handy.

      Another insightful/helpful/beneficial post by Jv….

  • Nice!

    Use it daily.

  • Is it as good as ever note?

    • +6

I was using EverNote in the past, but then I found OneNote a lot more smooth and better at recording notes in a variety of ways. Just imagine EverNote with Microsoft Word features.

Also, I particularly like the phone app for OneNote, it was similar to EverNote but again, it just felt smoother to use, pull up notes, sync, etc.

      • +2

The android version of one note doesn't bombard me with reminders, "where have you been" and "welcome back" messages like evernote does. Hence I use one note. My only issue is that sometimes it can be a bit slow to sync.

      • Thanks I'll give it a go.

      • Just imagine EverNote with Microsoft Word features.

Except neither OneNote nor Evernote has stylesheets - one of Word's most important features.

      • Plus the UI is much smoother. Evernote Desktop client is a turd.

      • omg are you serious? I love evernote. If this is better I need to start using it.

  • Wow this is great! This was such a useful tool back in high school to take notes with - glad it's free now.

  • OneNote is awesome!

  • Too bad I am already wrapped up with Evernote. Does OneNote do anything particularly better? Or are the Apps better than the ones available for iOS and Android? Or are they junk like a lot of other MS apps?

For notetaking Onenote is reportedly better since it has a better UI for note management.

I use both but still gravitate towards Onenote because it's simply more polished, (less information overload). EverNote has a different stance on how information is presented - more database style than scrapbook style.

I totally agree. I went through a phase of evernote-onenote usage and ended up just going with OneNote. It looks and feels way more polished, and supports native inking within notes. You can even drag and drop files as attachments and position them anywhere on the page, then annotate around it.

The Android app recently started supporting inking as well, which finally made my Galaxy Note Pro useful.

does OneNote do anything particularly better?

Yes, in OneNote, just like on paper, you can write anywhere - it's not left-to-right top-to-bottom as all other note making apps.

    • there's a program to transfer your Evernote notebooks to Onenote

    • As a heavy former Evernote user, I am glad I moved to Onenote.

  • it is good for me to choose.

For 64 bit version: On the download page at the bottom you'll see a link called "other download options" which contains a download link for the 64bit version of OneNote.

    • Thanks for that tip-I was struggling with this.

      • No worries! Just saw your message now. Much appreciated for your kindness to mention me.

    • Thanks aznain. Have added the link to the main post.

      • No problem.

  • It's taking me longer to suggest you post a link to the software than it will be for me to go and google it myself…

  • can't seem to record audio directly to a one note on iOS?? Shame…

  • Didn't have it. Even though I'm not a fan of a lot of Microsoft stuff I decided to try it. Love it.

  • Have one note 2010 installed already. Is it worth upgrading? Will it mess up the other Office 2010 programs?

  • Confirmed to have worked on Macs too? It doesn't say anywhere on their blog. Also, are iOS/Droid versions are the same? And can I sync to them all?

Seriously, this is a bloody dream come true if the above is true.

  • Judging by comments on the OneNote website, you can't open or save locally - it's all on the cloud. Is this right?

"I keep waiting for local/offline notebook support to be announced for all versions of OneNote, but for reasons I don’t understand, MS seems intent on not allowing this"

    http://blogs.office.com/2015/02/13/onenote-now-even-free/

    • Id like to have this clarified as well?

  • tHANKS, TA now to see if I can use it on Linux Mint?

  • Need to be aware that this is only a 32 bit version, as I already have some Office 2013 64 bit version this will not install, That is if any office 64 bit programs are installed forget it. For me this is not a deal but for others probably a great deal

    • +1

Microsoft recommends 32-bit Office for everyone as the 64-bit version only benefits very specific scenarios and workloads. e.g. MS Project files over 2GB and extremely large spreadsheets.

      https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681792.aspx

As more and more personal computers run 64-bit versions of Windows, it’s tempting to deploy the 64-bit version of Office 2013 to match. One benefit is that 64-bit Office allows users to work with larger sets of Excel and Project data. But, there are compatibility drawbacks for those users because Office add-ins and solutions might not work. That’s why 32-bit Office 2013 is recommended for most users.

      this is only a 32 bit version…

Read here for 64 bit version.

  • yes - I also got the message on 64-bit office and it took a little looking around to find the 64 bit version to install. Working fine so far - great package so thanks TA

  • Thanks OP, never tried this software but will now.

Will download now, just hope there will be no issue when I reinstall windows on my laptop & PC in the near future as I'm having issues with them.

But this sounds like it will be free for at least for a while, so guessing no problems doing that.

  • Anything free from these guys is always welcomed. Bad or good, here, free is free.
