    • They open at 8am tomorrow. I'm sure the first person to walk in tomorrow will clear them out.

Ugh, I can't wake up that early :(

  • yeah…that's cheap as.

  • Great price but must be a store special?

    • +2

Yeah, possibly. I have no need for drives like this but now I feel I should've just bought them all then & there to sell on to OzBargainers… for $49 of course :) Didn't think they'd be this popular!

      • +3

Or maybe just 1 so that we could get a copy of your receipt.

  • +2

Might be store specific. Just called Chadstone and they scanned at $99

    • edited out

    • +1

      They open at this time?

      EDIT: nevermind….they are!! GIYF

  • +1

Would I be able to price match at another store using the picture?

    • Surely they'd have to honour it. If not, see if JB sells the same model

  • What's a reliable brand of hard drives?

    • -2

      WD and HGST.

      • -7

        WD and HGST.

        Lol.

        • -3
        • @AdrianW: The only answer that everyone uses as the 'definitive' source, my god.

HGST for sure, WD are no better than Seagate.

        • @Porthos:

I guess it does depend on who you ask - but the only drive I've ever lost was a Seagate.

Previously I would have said Samsung (I still have about 10 Samsung F4 drives running - eight in a NAS). But now they're owned by Seagate.

And HGST are now owned by WD.

        • @AdrianW:

And HGST are now owned by WD.

While that's true, WD has nothing to do with the manufacturing of their 3.5" drives, they're all made by Toshiba (hence why I've found Toshiba to just just as good as HGST, but for a much better price).

Oh I remember the old Samsung drives, recently had my last 1TB 3.5" start to die the other week so it had to be replaced. Sucks they're no longer around.

        • @Porthos:

Where did you get that BS from?

ONLY reason Toshiba have 3.5" drives in their inventory is because WD was forced to sell off part of the 3.5" business they bought from Hitachi. This was to meet certain anticompetitive regulations for them to be allowed to buy the Hitachi hard drive business in the first place.

As for quality of Toshiba drives, here I'm referring to the 2.5" drives they have had for years, they are the worst shite around, they are so bad that Toshiba service centres put HGST in as replacement for failed 2.5 Toshiba drives.

I would never buy a Toshiba branded drive.

      • +3

Am I missing something here or what's with all the negs? All prices being equal I'd definitely go HGST myself.

    • +5

The answer depends on who you ask.

      • +4

Best line ever, sums up the hard drive wars perfectly. Could never quite put it into words.

    • +12

Id go with sorny or panaphonic

      • +6

Good picks! They're compatible with the Samsing Golaxy S7

      • +5

Don't use consumer products? That's really terrible advice lol.

      • "un-cooled, not-shock-protected and easily-bumped" LOL WTF is un-cooled?

        • +1

It appears he is suggesting internal drives in a pc or server.

        • @bargainhunter: oh.. un-cooled, I see, is he referring to 3.5" internal drives? using 12v? Looks like these are 5v 2.5" drives.

      • +2

here's a pen and a piece of paper. write your own dots.

      • I think he's right, I've dropped one of these seagates about 10cm and it hit something at an angle, I then caught it and congratulated myself on my ninja reflexes. However, the platters got all messed up and there went 1gb worth of shit. So as cheap as these are, I wouldn't be keen to get them again as a portable hdd. I'd prefer to pay a bit more for something that can survive some kind of minimal bouncing.

    • I would recommend this, especially if you take it around a lot (real portability) -
      Transcend Military Drop Tested
      http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Military-Tested-External-TS1…

Toshiba seems to be the worst in my experience!

  • +2

    WOW That's cheap

  • +2

Can anyone upload a receipt for price matching in other stores ?

  • +4

Why do you guys in Queensland get all the bargain prices and find the stock to go with it too?

    • +7

We also get short winters, lots of sun, lots of beaches and three of the biggest theme parks.

      • +5

And the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.

        • +7

          And cyclone Nathan twice

        • And very poor Public Transport!

        • +14

          @SteveAndBelle:
To be fair, every state has terrible public transport.

        • +2

          @TightBottom:
Don't worry everyone else in Australia will pay a levy to pay for it though.

      • +1

Short winters? Australia doesn't even have winters does it?

As a Queenslander, any day with a max below 28 is a blizzard hell storm.

Hi. Please post your receipt if possible for price match. Been waiting for a good price on portable. Thanks OP

  • +1

I feel like I must buy one but I can't think of why I'd need it at the moment. We stream most content these days, and anything else I use USB drives for since they have so much capacity these days (and are so cheap). But so hard to resist, especially since I'll be driving past that store first thing tomorrow morning…

    • +1

Well you would be a pretty piss-poor bargainer if you wasted money on something you absolutely know you don't need.
      My 2c.

      • +2

Pff, ozbargain has nothing to do with need :) but mainly I'm just stumped that I don't feel like I need this item which I've historically always had a need for upgrading…

        • +6

          Yeah, just teasing you.
          I always notice people here thinking its funny to say "I didn't need it so I bought three immediately" which to me is the absolute inverse of bargaining, I.E. saving money. My old Aunty said to me the truest truism ever;
"Its not a bargain unless you wanted it in the first place" I have always remembered that one.
          thats 4c now :)

  • +3

Ugh. The perils of living within arms reach of the Milton store, but knowing someone will buy them out for sure at 8.01am. And the M5 is a nightmare in the mornings.

  • +6

I will sleep saddened that 49 dollar 1.5 GB expansion drives are not in my state.

  • +1

I wonder if office works will price ma…
    Oh. Damn. :(

  • Oh man, why not in Melbourne. This is a really cheap hdd. Could have bought a few to store all my @*$!. lol

Nonetheless, thanks to OP. Lucky QLDers!

  • cheap way for those who buy the 12gb PS3.Just break it out of it's shell.

  • so no love for Melbourne :(

  • has someone called up to ask if the online store can price match + postage?

  • i called up (NSW) and no they cant do it…they said it's clearance item at Milton but their store has heaps so wouldn't be able to sell it for that price! :(

  • This is a real bargain !

  • Called up Trinity Gardens SA and they said they only price match competitors, which is a complete joke & would not do the price even with the photo.

    • +7

The purpose of price matching is having your business rather than leave it to someone else. So at their point of view, price matching its own store is just give away free money.

  • Alright, just called Milton store, they completely sold out last night.

    • +10

      Broden's been into the store

    • +1

      NOPE !!!!!
I went in @ 8.05 this am and they still had stock (not sure how many) - Got a couple….Try calling again

Anybody know if these can be cracked open for use in laptop????

      • +2

Been there 8:20, they had 8 left and introduced a 2 per customer rule just as I was picking my 3rd one :)

    • That's odd, they had stock this morning. Picked up 2 and there were more left

I just managed to get a price match at OW Brisbane City (Adelaide St).
The reception staff was bit hesitant but I requested to speak with a manager and the manager (or senior staff) agreed to match the price. I guess I was lucky because the staff mentioned few people tried before but they got declined.

I will try to upload the receipt ASAP.

Update - Here is the receipt
    Good Luck!

    • Just checked with the store in Hornsby. They don't price match receipts.

  • +4

I know this deal is marked as expired, but for those in NSW still interested, I believe Officeworks in Chatswood will be selling this for $59 (a wee bit dearer) on the 21st of March (this Saturday) as part of their opening specials.

    • +1

      Make a new deal.

      • Unfortunately I don't have physical evidence of the deal so I can't link it or anything like that (you'd just have to go on faith) so I'm hesitant to make one. I'm pretty sure it's legit though as I am friends with one of the employees who will be working there on opening day.

        • +1

If you're honest like you have been its still worth posting. People close to Chatswood would swing by to check and someone can make a phone call when the store opens. More people will see the deal that way.

  • +1

Sorry we do not price match other stores of the same company even having reciept, those who do it will get the sack.

    • Well a manager at Adelaide St, Brisbane did it so i guess managers are allowed to?. Look at a few posts up by Bappy.

    • +2

I don't think so, as I rang and confirmed it can be done also check this at your website http://www.officeworks.com.au/information/policies/lowest-pr…

What items does the 5% reduction apply to?
All identical products and services with identical terms and conditions that are stocked at Officeworks and in stock at our competitor.

      • It means that the product must be some thing that's the identical model that Officeworks sells and stocks that's also in stock at one of their competitors. That's not saying that Officeworks will match the managers sale price of another Officeworks store.

        • +3

but still that does not saying officeworks WON'T match the manager sale price as well :) haha Just a chance of luck as far as I know ~

      • in stock with our competitor

        • well you should read the whole last sentence haha
"…that are stocked at Officeworks and in stock at our competitor."

        • @jwing0001:

Quite simple and you're misreading it. I believe it means that the item must be both stocked at the Officeworks store and also in stock at the competitor. Meaning that Officeworks won't price match if they Officeworks themselves don't have it in stock.

    • +2

      Challenge accepted.

  • Pretty cheap. Is probably sold out by now.

  • +11

If nothing else it was fun watching frustrated OzBargainers go up and down the drive aisle at the Southport OW :-D

  • +2

Can confirm, all gone at Officeworks Milton.

  • I have called their sales department (1300 633 423), placed an order and requested the HD to be delivered to my local store for pick up. The lady on the phone was giving me the same reasons as some of the posts mentioned above, i.e Officeworks only price match with external competitors; it is a local store special, Milton Store is out of stock, sale is for a superseded model and etc…whatever reasons they have came up with before. My arguments are:

    1) On their lowest price guarantee page, there is no mention on price match on their own stores. Furthermore how can they offer price match with external competitors and not with their own stores, it just doesn’t make sense.

    2) It should not be considered as a price match, Officeworks is a national chain, and prices should be all consistent across the nation, what’s there to price match? Do we see Apple store has price variation from store to store?

I tried to order more than 1 unit and I was put on hold; when the lady came back, I was told I can only order 1 as special sales item, 1 per customer, so that they have enough stock for other customers. Fair enough, end of the day we don't want to see hoarders ordering 100 units and end up on ebay.

    • Are you in Qld too?
Wondering if the argument will hold for other states.

  • I am in Victoria; 1300 633 423 is a national number and the lady on the phone ordered the HD for me as an online purchase, so i don't see why there will be a state restriction.

    • I rang up, no dice. Seems they have had plenty of time to formulate their arguments now.

  • no luck with the national number, they dont price match their own stores.

  • +1

went into Adelaide st shop in bris cbd. showed phone with receipt and guy put it through without drama. will it work with Mac?

    • It may not out of the box but can always be reformatted.

  • Got the receipt and also the store picture :) I will try to price match with dick smith later lol
