Telstra $30 Prepaid NANO (& MICRO?) SIM with 3GB Data for 50c @ Kmart

2420

Kmart is currently clearing out the Telstra $30 prepaid NANO (and possibly MICRO) SIM cards with 3GB data included. It says for iPad on the packaging but works perfectly fine with any tablet/phone that takes nano/micro SIMs (or normal SIM with an adapter).

Expiry dates on these range from April 2015 to December 2015. Make sure you check the expiry date because a couple I saw were already expired.

I'm usually not the selfish type, but I gave in to my greed on this deal. To save you guys from an empty trip, I have already cleaned out Broadway Kmart, Mt Druitt Kmart and Chatswood Kmart.

Edit It appears I might have been given the MICRO SIM at the clearance price due to a clerical error. It is in fact only the NANO SIM that is on clearance, NOT the MICRO SIM, my mistake. Edited the title/description correctly.

Edit 2: It seems that the MICRO SIM starter pack might actually be on clearance as well. I'll update the title and description again if I can get more confirmations that this is indeed the case.

Edit 3: Updated title/description. So a few people did manage to get the MICRO SIM starter kit at 50c too. If it helps the MICRO SIM starter kits I acquired all had 30 Sep 2015 expiry date on them.

Edit 4: If it helps you folks out, THIS is what the MICRO SIM starter kit I got for 50c looks like. White packaging with teal writing. It is NOT the pink packaging that comes with $30 credit.

      • Telstra would be but Kmart would be taking a loss.

        • As Kmart still paid Telstra $10 for the SIM?

        • +6

"Mobile data" is not a consumable, it's not manufactured, it's not mined out of the ground, it's not used, it's not eaten, it's not lost, it doesn't go bad or expire. It's nothing, and costs Telstra nothing, but it's sold to you at an extremely high markup, with a small data cap, that does expire, and is lost at the end of a billing cycle. Not to mention the ridiculous 'excess' charges - excess is where Telstra make its profits. Excess solely funds exotic Christmas parties and new infrastructure like their 4Gx network … that you want … and are willing to pay for … but really don't need and will hardly use. Who needs 450mbps on a mobile device?

Don't get me wrong 50c is much better than the usual $10/Gb you pay. But in 2014 Telstra took in $27bn $9.5bn of that came from the 15 million SIMs. That works out on average to $52 per month per SIM. Of course OzB's won't pay 1c for excess, but everyone else (the majority) will just fall in line & top up or go on a plan or pay ridiculous amounts of excess for essentially 'nothing'.

I doubt even Kmart paid for these - they would have just been dropped off in a box to sweeten a deal on some reciprocal business. Payback is 2 weeks anyway. & if you don't renew they don't care, as it still cost them nothing!

          </rant>

        • @snoo:

It costs capital, maintenance and an appopriate level of overheads. After theyve paid those costs it's all profit, sure. But it doesn't change that an investment had to be made. You have no idea if you're paying off the initial investment or if youre the marginal user providing profit. And that's forgetting that you're partially funding regional users, which needs to happen to be a key player in the industry. I agree phone co's charge too much, but I wanted to put your comment in perspective - it's a huge claim you made.

        • @snoo: 'rant alright!'
Have you ever bought bottled water in Australia?
I don't know about paying for nothing, it's not material as such, but it is something that allows you to 'do'or 'experience'. Those towers, satellites etc. Cost something. You do realise this, don't you?

        • +3

@RightplaceRontime: at least they didn't pay Josh Thomas to do some weird and irrelevant ads on TV!

        • @shmahoo:
Ha ha ha absolutely! Those ads were the worst.

        • Yup - they invested only half of last years income ($4.6bn) on their 4Gx technology & it's already paid off. Running costs & labor only cost them $1.8bn in 2014, 15% of overall income. The other half of your "excess data fund" went into their Telstra Global business expansion - this is absolutely massive and is starting to put them on the same playing field as ATT / Sprint / Orange / BT

But I think you're missing the point here…

Transmitting 30GB of data over the air costs no more than 1Gb or 3Gb, so why should we pay more? Because we're conditioned to think we should pay more, because all telcos do this (globally), because its hugely profitable, and because we don't know any different. We all think its expensive but 'ok' and just fork over the money. Unless of course we see a OzB post for 50c, and theres a mad scramble to clean out the store.

Telstra are ripping Australians off blind and you sit there & defend them on a hunch that it costs them billions in maintenance. The figures are in their financial report here -> http://bit.ly/1Cd4ZA1 .. The infrastructure is paid off .. The data costs them nothing .. A 50c SIM costs them nothing, instead it earns them (on average) $52 a month.

        • @snoo:

Transmitting 30GB of data over the air costs no more than 1Gb or 3Gb, so why should we pay more?

I think that is so true. All the mobile phone plans with all the inclusions and exclusions cost exactly the same to the telcos. It's not like we have live operators physically connecting each and every call, nor are there taps to turn on and off for data use. It all comes down to how much the customer thinks they're getting a deal they are happy with, and keep doing it every few weeks!

  • Bought the last 2 at Erina Fair but got home and realised one expired Dec 14. Is there any way for Telstra to activate an expired SIM or have I wasted my 50c?

    • +2

Take it to a Telstra store with your receipt and ask them to replace it.

      • Thanks sween64, will give it a shot.

        • +1

Telstra store won't replace it, probably need to return back to Kmart

      • +3

Thanks for the tip, Telstra store swapped it no questions asked.

        • Well done.

    • Once past expiry, Telstra can't do anything. Only can ask for refund from Kmart. I've investigated this before.

      • Even not expired… Brought few close expiry starter kit to Telstra Store before and staff can't do anything

    • Tried to activate an expired one recently, and yes, they die and can't be revived.

      • Maybe call up like samia786 did below

    • I found an starter kit this week

while sorting out old documents. It expired in May 2014. Called telstra and they still activated it. As a bonus it was a cool number as well, like 04xy ab 04xy. Might just keep this. What's the cheapest way to maintain thus number?

      • +1

Few carriers have pay as you go for either very little or nothing. Can't remember which ones, sorry. Aldi is $15 per year.

      • +1

Use vodafones 365 day recharge and port the number.

      • +1

Aldi Starter Pack is $5 for 365 days.

      • +1

        Yatango PAYG?

  • Sylvania Kmart is 24 hours.

Someone might want to try Hurstville Kmart tomorrow morning too.

    • +1

Hurstville has 1 normal size sim , comes up on checkout as $30

There was 1 nano sim for $0.50, but expired dec 2014. The man took the item to the back room.

      • saved me the walk, thanks!

  • Ozbargained!

  • I bought the last 2 Micro-SIMs from Moonee Ponds, VIC.

50c, had the pricetag on the shelf and all.

    • Wait MICRO sims? Are you sure?

      • +1

Yep, $30 MICRO sim starter packs, pricetagged and all, expiry for them is Apr 12 and Nov 17 2015

EDIT: Mine are not the Data (white) ones, I got the normal pink packet ones

        • Pink packet SIMs for 50 cents? Nice work. They can be activated on any pre-paid offer eg Freedom

    • So the MICRO SIMs are actually on clearance as well? Wasn't sure if it was just me that got lucky.

      • Others are saying $30… hmmm the plot thickens.
        Must be expiry date.

  • +1

Bought the last 3 from Figtree, NSW.

  • How about getting other stores to price match like jbhifi?

    • Let us know how you go.

    • +2

How about officeworks? You work there. Will they price match? If they won't then don't expect JB HiFi to price match either.

    • JB won't price match. They wouldn't price match The Good Guys $10 deal.

Officeworks should price match if you can find the same stock available at an OW.

      • +1

OW price match t&c is not to match clearance stock.

  • I used to be able to get 3gb but now only ever 2 GB.

I think if you activate too many on the one telstra account they start restricting u you to 2 GB per new card?

    • +3

Not so. These are old iPad SIM, with 3GB. Current $30 starter pack activate with 2GB.

See the Telstra Starter Pack Wiki under Data

      • Its not about new vs old sim. The Sims I bought all had exp of march or april 2015, so there all old ones and I haven't gotten more than 2gb on my last 5 or so new sim activations

        • +1

Are you using the old discontinued iPad Starter Packs like those in this deal?? Or older versions of the $30 Starter Packs currently being sold? There is a big difference between them.

You read what I wrote in the Wiki regarding changes last year to data plans? The Wiki is compiled from years of experience using Telstra Starter Packs by OzBargainers.

I've activated so many over a few years with no problems using on same account.

There is a big difference between these iPad Starter Pack (data only 3GB SIM with no credit) vs $30 credit Starter Packs (activate on phone plan or buys 2GB data).

Telstra reduced data from 3 to 2GB on all $30 credit Starter Packs last year & stopped selling the iPad Starter Pack, as I stated in Wiki. So 2GB is all you will receive on those.

Recharging these iPad Starter Packs with $30 should maintain your data & buy data at the old 3GB iPad Plan rate. But that's an expensive option against a 50c Starter Pack.

  • +1

No nano SIMs for iPad at Campbelltown NSW.

  • None left in geelong stores..hard luck!

  • has anyone tried the NEW KMart in Reservoir VIC?

    • +1

I doubt they would have OLD stock.

    • Good place to pick up some ice while your car is being graffiti-ed though.

  • No nano SIMs for iPad at Minto NSW. Two micro SIMs for iPad with expiry date Oct 2015 scanned at $30 each.

  • Does anyone know the keycode for the Micro iPad kit?

Just rang Kmart regarding stock of Nano or Micro in Queensland…

Nano-sim: only showing at Robina & Gladstone (report above from aussie28 bought 8 from Gladstone last night - so forget it)

    Micro-sim: none available.

As Telstra discontinued iPad Starter Packs mid last year, it's not surprising there is little stock.

Of course stock reports may be out of date or inaccurate anyway.

Hope that saved Queelanders calling Kmart.

    • +2

Nano-sim: only showing at Robina & Gladstone (report above from aussie28 bought 8 from Gladstone last night - so forget it)
      Micro-sim: none available.

      Entirely wrong statement.
THERE WERE STOCKS in SE QLD this morning.

      • Correction…there was stock in se qld…Kmart just got "ozbargained".

      • Sorry, but that's what Kmart told me at 7:40 am. Kmart were wrong.

      • Definitely the wrong information provided here. I just picked up nano sims from Aspley and Arana Hills this evening.

    • Called into Indro. Today did not see any Telstra. They are clearing out the full range of. Yes opt us $2 starter packs for 50cents. Nano, micro, combined, international and data. But you have to register by sometime in April (16) I believe. You also have to pay for data, service plan, daily, monthly what ever. They lost me before then. My provider is Westnet that uses Yes-Optus, and it OK most of the time for me.

  • Just called the national hotline. Current possible locations for stock in Victoria of the Nano SIM:
    Fountain Gate
    Werribee
    Campbellfield

I'd call the store directly before heading there to check stock.

    • +2

If you call the store and alert the employee's, they will take them

      • Haha true. The lady I called sounded old enough to A) be honest and put some aside for me and B) not as desperate for cheap data, she probably works near free wifi. Hopefully there are still some there when I go later this morning.

      • +2

        Hahah yes.

In Tuggeranong Kmart, they didn't have updated labels on the packs, were still showing the full price.

When they were scanned as 50c at the register, you should have seen the look on the face of the teenager Kmart sales assistant whom I bought the packs from.

        • +2

you should have seen the look on the face of the teenager Kmart sales assistant

          Telstra $30 Sim … 50c
Look on the face of the teenager … Priceless

Did you walk away and shout TEAM OZBARGAIN

        • they still have in Tuggeranong?

        • @easternculture:
I was so happy I could not think of anything :)

        • @TRAVLER:
There were 4 at the display. I bought them all.

I did not ask if they had some more in the back somewhere.

  • Got the very last nano in Townsville. Micros scanned at $30 and the store rep wouldn't let them go for the 50c…

    • -1

Ah, head office did not indicate any stock outside of Gladstone & Robina, so worth trying stores despite stock reports of no stock.

  • i had to haggle with the tired old cow at logan hyperdome to get the last 2 nanos (white packets). She was as helpful as pockets in undies.

Loath as she was to scan up multiple packets, the coloured micro and nano ones scanned as $30

    • as helpful as pockets in undies.

      That could work.

  • +1

Called in the head office, none in my area, but low stock in Hurstville, Campbelltown, Bass Hill, Bankstown… NSW

    • there is definitely none in Bankstown. I cleared the last 4 yesterday night at 10pm. Probably they haven't updated store stock

      • They said low stock, call store before going, so I guess it takes a while to update the stock.

        • +2

just went again to bankstown and no stock

          Called Bass Hill

Me: Hello, i want to ask if any stock left for …….
CS: All sold out … Hang up

  • -1

not on sale at garden city, queensland. don't know about the other stores in qld tho

    • +2

Nah man… I just bought one from there, as did another lady who was there ahead of me. There was also someone on the phone on hold asking about them, and one of the staff said (to the other staff) that she's had 4 calls about them this morning. They had no idea about it being on clearance, and would only sell one per person. The stack of SIMs had been removed from the display cabinet and was sitting on the bench beside the cashier in that area. There were around 6 available at the time I left the store.

      • Thanks quop. Should have tried there - it's my local, but thought they wouldn't have any stock. Tried without luck down by the Bay - Wynumn, Capalaba, Victoria Point.

        • There were a few left this morning, but I think a few more people have purchased since then so don't know current situation. Also dropped into Sunnybank Hills store in the afternoon - only one micro visible in cabinet, staff said it wasn't on sale and says they never had any of the 50c ones. Thought about asking him to take out the micro and scan it, but didn't.

        • @quop:
          Scanned micro at 2 stores - $30 :-(
Only got 1 nano at Cannon Hill. (Exp Dec 2015) ID & limit of 1. They only had 2.

Wanted 2 for use in more remote locations. Great price, but I don't need more data SIMs. I've still got $10 ones bought in 2013 about to expire.

  • +1

less relevant to this particular deal.
