  • IMO, for another $100 ($80 after 20% discount), http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-250-Laptop-PC-15-6-LED-Intel-i… is better

    • Only improvement is in the processor though. Otherwise still the same chassis, and same amount of RAM and storage.

windows 7/8 pro is worth it

        • They both have pro if im not mistaken?

        • @ferrarifreak:
Nope, just standard 8.1 64 bit on the i3.
It should be this model: J8K61PA

3230 is a huge improvement though. We've actually got both of these models for my wife and her colleague.
And yes, the Pro is definitely worth it… especially if you're a Win8 hater like me!!!

        • Is the more powerful processor worth an extra $80 in terms of performance?

        • +2

          @ferrarifreak:
Funny that you should even ask that considering your user name!

Short answer from me, is yes; long answer is, if you didn't have anything better you wouldn't know you're missing out. But to have both of these things side by side, or doing stuff one after another, on occasions can get a little frustrating waiting… (what should be fractions of a second but seems to be more like 2-10 seconds or more depending what I'm doing on them!

And like I said, throwing in Pro for good measure helps!

        • @Snoop:

If this model has the i5 3230M ( there is no 3230U ) which is the powerful 35W model, the battery in this is probably a 6 cell unit the same as on the model listed below by puffinfresh with the Pentium, and hence 250 Grams heavier. That makes a difference if carrying this a lot. It should be a lot faster with similar graphics performance thanks to the i5 Turbo Boost.

        • @ozhunter68:
Yes it is 'M', I never said 'U'! And checking specs says that it's 4cell 41WHr.

I remember looking at this and one with the 4210U.
It was almost down to the flip of a coin between the 2!
3230 is older, weighs more, uses more power, has older HD4000 graphics, but was quicker and more powerful across the board!
I think it really came down to the 3230 being on special at the time for $450ish!

edit: I see why you mentioned 3230U now… It's listed as that on that eBay page!

        • @Snoop:

Was refering to the listing regarding the U/M CPU difference. The listing calls it an i5 3230U, no such thing LOL. As you know, this makes a huge difference. I agree with you on the performance comparison, as I also have had an i3 2350M 2rd gen as well as a i3 3227U and i5 3317U ( both 3rd gen ). Although the benchmarks results are close and higher for i5, real world use still shows the older full Voltage CPU is considerably quicker.

Regarding the battery, I was going on the specs listed and did not state nor the weight, then going of the Pentium. So can you confirm that this is a 4 or 6 cell batter, and also the weight difference.

Either way, this is a great buy as well as many of the other models depending on your needs and budget.

        • @ozhunter68:
Can confirm: Model is J8A91PA; Battery is 14.8v 41Wh 2620mAh; Weight is exactly 2.3Kg as is with battery measured on kitchen scales!

Not a bad price if you just want a half decent cheapie though!

Thumbs up from me. i3 will shirt all over the N2830's you see these day.
Solid i3 lappy under $400. May not see that again for a while with teh AU$ as it is.

  • I went with this one for my mum: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331013200196?_trksid=p2060353.m14…

    $306 after discount

Great pick up for the price. Your probably getting the best value here out of the three laptops mentioned here, all similar chassis but this on a tad heavier, but on the up side you get a 6 cell battery.
Not a lot slower than the i3 4005U, but graphics a little weaker as you don't get the full performance from the Intel HD Graphics 4000 as it is missing some features. Unless your into games or editing photos you won't see the difference. Also not as energy efficient as the i3 4005U, but bigger battery should level that out. Good bargain there.

      • Thanks for the reassurance! You read into it more than I did :)
I originally went for a Toshiba from DSE that was about $90 more, but had similar specs other than a larger HDD. Then I spotted this one, so I cancelled the DSE order. I haven't had the best experience with HPs in the past, but I didn't think it was worth 30% more to go for a Toshiba. To be fair, her current HP is running fine after a few years and a replaced fan; but now the keyboard is starting to die.

        • To be fair, most entry level laptops are built to a price and have weaknesses and shortcomings. At this level, looking at stats of breakdowns between Acer, Toshiba, Asus and HP, there is not that much between them. Some have better batteries, keyboards, screen etc, but rarely all in one package. For that you need to go up in the range and usually pay a lot more.

I had a cheapish HP G6 and was very happy with it for the price. Not one key broken after 2 years, but then again all my laptops from different brands also don't have any faulty keys. Maybe it depends how you treat it too.
