    • Me too :)

  • managed to pick up this for $40 and got 2 $30 iTunes card as well, save me some petrol.

  • Looks like the promo codes have stopped working. I tried multiple emails over 6h ago but no code yet.

    • +1

Yeah, really think they have turned it off after they realised people were flogging it silly with this sale

  • Bought 2,both have the $50 SIM packs inside.

  • anyone know if the $50 starter sims have an expiry date?

  • Trent The Telstra Tempo is now showing page not found so i assume they removed it.

  • Have bought codes from mobunlockingmaster, and he keeps stuffing things up. Yesterday first email from him said one could not be found, second email had only half of one of the codes in it. Today a third email with codes for two IMEI's I never requested, and still missing one.

So spent the extra dollar and go with bag_man = no hassles.

    • Quoting previous feedback from another happy customer :

I ordered an unlock code from an eBay seller with good rep, and I had the code back in like 5 mins after ordering!

I used this seller to unlock

      • I got my code in about half an hour so so. They actually provided 4 separate codes and I had to search which one it was - luckily I got it right on the first try.

        • Great news then. Most of these phone unlock code providers will send out 3 or 4 and usually ( every time for me ) the first one works. They usually have instructions on their website or included with the codes.

    • Can't you all get codes from Vodafone for free or it's not?
      https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-serv…

  • Seems this one does not work on Telstra network, any one tried?

    • +2

Y550 can be unlocked for $3+ on ebay. Though I highly recommend bag_man

      • Thanks, I mean the band it soppurts seems not in Telstra arrange, the 850.

        • +1

It seems fine, support 850 well, all good.

  • has anyone had issue with this ascend y550? for example it randomly reset every 3 to 4 days for no reason.

    • I found the GPS was pretty bad in Google Maps when driving. It didn't track location very well at all. Only tried once though.

      • +2

Google maps requires internet and gps to operate.
Best to use offline maps like Here maps (free) or Sygic (pay).
I use those and never had a problem with them on many phones including Huawei.

        • I had 4G mobile data enabled as well as high accuracy mode location services.

Tracking was noticeably poor, with Google Maps reporting "GPS signal lost" a few times.

Will try again with HERE maps next time to see if this occurs.

        • @happychappy1:
We use 2 Huawei G526's for "offline" navigation and both are faultless.
I would assume they use the same gps hardware as the Y550?
If there is a heap of other progs running and reducing resources that may cause things to bjork I imagine?
I would not waste my time trying to use internet and gps at the same time that is why I prefer offline maps like Here / Sygic.

        • +1

@xywolap: just because it has a similar chipset doesn't mean other elements like the software and antenna setup are the same, as these play an important role as well.

I found that google maps simply didn't move the map along as it would normally do (the location dot got stuck in the wrong position). But it could just be a fault with the app itself.

I've switched the default storage to external SD and installed HERE maps with Australian map downloaded to see how it is.

        • @happychappy1:
          Valid points.
I can tell you that even PC board component placement can even come into play.
The antenna shape and length can have a large effect too.

        • @happychappy1:
To give the device the best chance to perform turn off any unused features and apps… after all it is just a phone trying to be a sat nav LOL.
I will be able to give feedback on the Y550 vs G526 gps performance soon as I relented and got one of these Y550's… damn hard to pass up at this price :-)

        • +2

@xywolap: Here's an update with regards to GPS.

I tried HERE maps and it worked somewhat OK in terms of overall tracking.

I had some difficulty with Google Maps thinking I was facing the wrong direction every time I stopped (compass issues I think), but after I moved it went back to tracking in the right direction.

Didn't have any issues with GPS losing signal in the open, but I had high accuracy mode enabled for location services.

    Thanks

  • Has anyone who bought it from click n collect received an email to pick it up yet?

    • +1

Yes received pick up email within a few hours, same morning (day of post) x 1 phone. Haven't picked it up yet as working through Easter. Am in Melbourne.

      • ohhh… Odd.

Still received nothing. I did order it the same day quite early too. :(

  • Yay, I finally ordered me a droid. You've now idea how long I've been holding off. It's not exactly what
I want but for $40 who can complain. Is there any dual SIM adapter for this (that costs less than the phone)?

Hope HN comes through with the phone + delivery

Both codes used or not working 9am 5/4

  • how to use above codes?

    • Enter code at checkout before paying.

  • Nice! Thanks for the post, got the Y550, been using for about an hour, great handset for the price, has a better screen than I expected, now need to bagman. Side note, I don't need the starter pack, if anyones interested you can grab it off me.

    • +1

You should keep the starter pack - it's a $50 cap that includes unlimited data over the weekends for the life of the recharge (28 days) until May 10. That's pretty much unbeatable value.

As for unlocking - go for these guys: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Unlock-Code-Huawei-Ascend-P6-G535…

I got my code in very short time and it only cost $2.99 (less than what Bagman is charging, and he's usually slower too).

      • Bagman replied to me in just over 10 minutes of sending payment. I think it's just luck of the draw if either of them happen to be at their PC/Workplace/Whatever, ready to get your unlock code.

      • -1

Thanks for that, I'll definitely have look at that. I was considering keeping the starter pack, however I barely ever use my already existing service, I'm not a heavy caller/texter, I just have a phone for entertainment and emergency reasons.

  • +1

I used this service, which works out to about $AU2.60..
    http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Unlock-Code-Huawei-Ascend-Y550-4G-Hua…?
Got code in under an hour, all working.
(I first tried on the Vodafone website … they wanted to charge me $75 to unlock, and that was after a $25 "discount"!).

  • Is there suppose to be a plastic film on the phone's screen to peel off? Mine don't have it so maybe it's a refurbished one.

    • No, not on these ones.

      • I've seen unboxing videos and it does have a plastic film on the screen.

        • Different country. As long as the anti-tamper sticker is sealing the box, it'll be fine.\

        • Mine had plastic film on it. I'm blown away by how good this phone is for the price point. It's unbelievable how good these budget phone are getting.

        • @Ronnnie: it's probably heavily subsidised by Vodafone.

  • Y550 purchased. free delivery too. $40 delivered with $5 coupon off. Don't need the phone, but could be good to muck around with/have spare.

  • I signed up in the morning and got a confirmation email a few hours later but no code? Anyone willing to help a brother out? Please PM me :)

    • As noted earlier, account sign up does not provide the code. Newsletter sign up gets the code.
Sure you signed up for emails?

      • Thanks mate, was under the impression I had but went back and did it again and got one, cheers

  • Starting using the phone, it is great, but the picture taken by the camera seems lack of colour, more close to black and white, is it a faulty camera? or it is common?

    • Check out the review, http://www.cnet.com/au/products/huawei-ascend-y550/

      Excerpt from the review

THE BAD Its screen has a very low resolution, Huawei's custom Android skin is clunky and awkward to use, the camera is poor, the HDR mode simply doesn't work, it only has 4GB of built-in storage and the underpowered processor sometimes results in sluggish navigation.

At the end of the day, you get what you paid for!

      • Thanks, Cloudie.
Not expect the camera to be very good, but hope there is some settings or apps to improve it.

      • +2

That review should be taken with a grain of salt, very biased review…

This phone is incredible for its price point. I've managed to get over 5 hour onscreen time from first charge. The performance is quite good too, it can even play games like GTA: SA. Actually the SoC used is slightly better than what you typically find in phones 5 times its price.

    • +2

Check camera settings… allow it to focus before taking shot. If that does not work then may be faulty.
Our 2 Huawei 5mp phone cameras take great pics.

  • If you have spare code please pm me one as I tried few emails but no luck. TIA!

    • Did you sign up to receive their ad emails? That's what you get the $5 for.

      • Yeah I did.

  • do anyone know how to ROOT this
